Welding open root practice plates is a good way to prepare for a 5g pipe test.
As long as thickness, bevel angle, root opening, and land are the same, the same settings and techniques that work on plate will work on pipe.
With pipe, you will still need to practice body positioning and transitions to different rod angles but other than that, the techniques used on practice plates will work on pipe.
hope this helps...

The best welding channel on the internet. Thank you for everything Jody. Goggins inspired me to go back to college, got my degree in welding with a 4.0 GPA, and this channel has helped me tremendously along the way.

One of the most difficult things I've ever done was my 6g pipe welding test. I was brand new to welding, I spent hours and hours staying after work to practice. It felt so good when I passed. I put my heart and soul into the pipe fitter apprenticeship. Then one year in, the company shut down the apprenticeship.

Pipe welding is hard! especially when your 57 year old eyes don't focus as well as they used to and your not anywhere near as flexible as you were when you were 25 : ) I sure enjoy your videos Jody, especially the Tig welding. I suck at Tig welding, but thanks to your tutelage over the years I am much better at it. Cheers

Just started college with pipe welding and this has really given me helpful information with how I should be running 6010 electrodes. Was having issues with the root and think the plate gap and how I was running the rod was the issue but watching this has given me a better understanding
@MikeP350
@MikeP350 3 жыл бұрын
6010 roots take some practice before you really get the feel for it. Shove that rod in the gap and drag. Alot of people teach the whip and pause on roots. Alot of times it's not necessary IMO and it's easy to lose control of your heat and blow up the keyhole. My pipe instructor had 30 years pipe welding experience and taught me to do roots the same way Andrew is here. Was a game changer for me. Warm up the rod for a sec, shove it in that gap and drag the root in. Uphill or down.
@edfrancis7584
@edfrancis7584 3 жыл бұрын
I was told and taught to pause and whip on the root and found exactley as your describing. Keyhole getting too big and loosing control. Going to just jam it in there and I'll let you know after my next evening course 😂
@MikeP350
@MikeP350 3 жыл бұрын
@@edfrancis7584 It works great for me. I didnt know you could drag a 6010 like that until my instructor showed me. This is the first 6010 youtube vid I've seen showing this technique as well. The key is keeping pressure on the rod and the proper travel speed. Having the arc jammed in there chokes the voltage and keeps the heat down. I don't understand why more people don't teach this method. Good luck to ya, let me know how it works out for you.

The greatest blessing in all my life was to buy my first box of 6010 rods for welding bore casing. I started out with 7014's because that's what my dad liked and they do make a nice pretty flat weld but very difficult if not impossible on any kind of vertical welding or overhead situation.

That 6010 might work on frames to for a root. This is crack repairs on heavy equipment, loaders, shovels. Then fill with 7018. Most of the time I fit a backer plate/ 1/8" strap then do the root with 3/32 7018 all uphill welds. This has worked well for me. The 6010 would save time for sure. I don't like using wire to much because its easy to over heat the work piece if your not watching the temp. Before temp guns I always did the spit test.

I work a lot in refined petroleum product pipeline in the northeast. I haven't seen HYP on a weld procedure in 15 years. Also, most of the welding procedures detail same diameter rod for root AND hot pass. I mainly work on 16" and under. The only time I see 3/16 is maybe in a fill pass or cap. Guys also try and manage your fill so you end up flush or maybe just a hair low on the last pass before the cap. Keep this fill the same all around. No short striping. The inspectors are gonna be watching for that. Take care.

In the video you talk about 7010 hyp rod, which is designed for vertical downhill(according to the Lincoln information), but the video description says 6010. Can you clarify which is correct for the video? Based on what I have seen of the video, it welds like 6010... but I have never seen 7010 run... either way I never realized that 7010 electrodes existed until I saw this video. Just wondering if I discovered a rod that would work for Field repairs outside of pipe.. Might be a new tool for the mental toolbox... or on the work truck Thinking about plans that call for 70XX Electrode... not needing a rod oven by using cellulose coated electrodes instead, could be beneficial in some scenarios.

They're cellulose rods mate, so the slag freezes very quickly, they are designed for this sort of application. You wouldn't necessarily be able to do this with basic or rutile rods, although some are designed to be used for downhill. The manufacturer's literature will advise on what rod is suitable for the application you require 👍
