Here in Texas as far as TIG is concerned we have always done a sharp or feathered edge. Myself I like a 1/32 landing on all my pipe, however in production pipe shops the overwhelming majority of pipe welders gripe if there is a landing. My students and I watch both of you guys.

In the shop I work(Petrochemicals, exotic alloys, xray UT MT etc..) all of the Welders prefer feathered edge fitups for MIG/TIG roots, FCAW and SAW fill/cap. Field welds often will have lands for SMAW welding.

Great video! I am also a lefty like Bob. I use a feathered edge like Halmar but walk it like Bob. out in the field, the fitter doesn't always pay attention to how you like it and you get what you get. Welding is always about improvising and improving your technique. always keep learning. thanks guys

At the end of the day it’s the result that counts. Welding is always personal preference, the key is getting comfortable and being consistent with the weld. Some people can’t change hands and get twisted up and the weld isn’t so great. Practise, practise, practise. It’s been said 1000 hrs doing anything results in quality. There’s your answer. Amps changes from left to right handed because of the arc angle and length. Some people don’t believe that but it’s gospel. I’ve taught right and left handed guys and they always find the same result. Both of these guys know what they’re doing, but it’s just personal preference. It’s the result that counts.

I prefer to have a land on the bevel, too. Most of the stuff I do has to be preheated, so it’s not very comfy to rest the fingers on the pipe. On big inch pipe I find it also way more comfortable to rest the cup. But this is all personal preference like you said. If I have to tie in below 3 o‘clock I switch to a torch angle about 90 degrees and use a thinner wire. Then I create a keyhole and push wire in there . It’s a bit like the dipping technique with pushing wire. That gives me enough reenforcement but I don‘t leave cold wire in there.

On a business side of it, it all about minimizing time, and maximizing productivity and as long as you make a good quality weld and accepted by the inspector. Great video and great for the welders community. and you noticed! young gun used a jumbo gas lens & jumbo cup, the old timer used a regular set up. :) its all good !!

Re: Looking to become a pipe welder A lot shop fab is mig welded, like meter skids, seperators parts of vessels. If you want to travel and weld you need to find a helper job somewhere you want to go and learn the downhill stick side or get into chemical and water plants where everything is tig welded or try em all out. Getting a helper job for a year or 2 is going to be more useful than most schooling plus you'll take home 1500$ a week for the right company. Save, learn, practice in your spare time. When your comfortable go find a test

@WeldTube - What kind of gloves do you use to TIG with? My gloves are the thin Tillman TIG gloves and to rest my finders on that pipe, my fingers would be toast in about 5 minutes resting them on pipe running 110 amps.

The reasoning for the heat actually being lower for the face is travel speed. Bob has to run just a bit slower do to their being an edge. If he ran hotter, he would have to run faster and less likely to break down both walls. The knife edge, needs more heat to help up the travel speed. The wall breaks down faster, so you need to be moving faster. If you’re to cold, that wall make not break down good, or make you sit in one spot to long and allow extra heat build up.

I've been trying out the no land prep, and been really liking the results with that. However bob does make a good point, unfortunately a lot of outside parts that are pre-prepped (flanges, T's, elbows) almost always come with a land on them. So in those cases, you either gotta weld with the land or take the time to grind the land down

I worked at a fab shop and we got 90's T's and all kinds of schd 40, 80, and 160 fittings and they had the laborers take a tiger paw and knock off the landing then take them to the blast cabinet before going to the pipe shop to get rocked out

Carlos Alvarez tig weld almost the same except one is an electrode with shielding gas and the other is a gas torch, you can weld with a torch and braze weld too.

Hey bro. Can you make a vid showing how you push the filler wire with your thumb using left and right hand. I heard bob says that he is rolling the filler wire when supplying the filler wire. Im interested with your technique because im having a hard time supplying the filler wire when doing the root. I cant get the proper root penetration because it is only flush and didnt push more filler wire there.

Darwin Espiritu you want to be flush. Its ok to have little reinforcement but flush is always better. Less turbulence in the pipe when product flows. That is why people who leave large nuggets fail.

Its highly likely it's a 3/16. That's what we use down here in the south and on the gulf coast. Alot of companies down here require a backfed root for there test.

I’m a 15 year automotive window film installer. I bought a home with my wife in the country. Tinting is slow out here compared to the city. I have been watching these videos a bunch. I am 34. Do you have any advice for me I am thinking about going to welding school. My grandpa is a welder. Idk? Something is saying do it. I love tinting cars! Do you LOVE welding? Do you get excited waking up for work? Or is it just another job? You guys hanging out welding seems fun and all. But I saw a guy welding in the cold outside. It’s cold in Colorado. I’m not sure if I wana be out in the cold all the time? Pros? Cons? Opinion? Is it to late for me to learn? I suck at math. lol

Too late for weld school in honest opinion. At 34 I think it would be best to try to get a job as a helper and learn on the job. That way you are also making money. Hopefully you have already made a move on learning a trade because the truth is… no one wants to be a 40 year old labor

I had a question, when tacking ur fit up "4 tacks at each quadrant" Do you penetrate your tacks then feather ends and then tie in to them? Or do you completely grind them out and reweld them?

Depends on the tack. If it is a penetrated tack - feather the end you tie in to. I it is a bridge tack - cut out. I started on pipeline this week and ran into 8" pipe for the first time in my life( before it was boiler work with 2" pipe) and the first two days a had a hard time with the standart placement of the tacks - 12, 6, 9, and 3. I would weld the bottom first ( from 6 to 9 and from 6 to 3) and after that would go for the top. But it would close on me insanely- from a lose 5/32 to 0.080" and I couldn't do anything about that. Then I've found a video with Bob explaining fitup stuff and there he would mention his preference on tack placement - 12, 10 and 2 o'clock. Works perfectly, no shrinking at all.
