As for AR10 which is a totally different platform (whole new gun) it performs better than 308 in everything but energy on target and comes close to 6.5 CM on everything but energy. If you want a lighter weight long range AR15 that can hit at incredible range Valkyrie does it.

Something looks off. A 123gr 6.5 Grendel projectile out of an 18 inch barrel should still be supersonic past 1,000 yards. And a 168gr projectile in a 308Win is NOT supersonic at 1,000 yards. A 175gr will be, but not the 168.

Hornady plays games using different barrel lengths and bullets then comparing. The 22arc is a prime example. When you look at the reloading data, the 224 valk. Is equal/better than 22 arc. The 6.8spc is tested with a 16" barrel while most other rounds are tested with a 24" barrel. 8 inches of barrel (200 fps) makes a difference.

I shoot both the 6.5 Grendel and the 6MM ARC. Both of them are awesome rounds. I chambered the 6.5 Grendel in an 18 inch barrel and the 6 MM ARC out of a 20’ inch barrel. Using them both for different purposes. 6.5 Grendel for camping and the 6 ARC for competition shooting. These rounds were very hard to find during the Plandemic and I ended up finding a plug at the gunshows and he would sell both ballistics in bulk. It was expensive but worth it at the time. Now I can find 6MM ARC easily but the Grendel is still pretty illusive as it isn’t found in as many places as the 6 MM ARC.

Honestly the Grendell was originally conceived for Army special forces to be able to target longer distance targets with the shorter rifle chanbered in 14" most of the time and have more penetrating power even than the .223 round they carry now. 6mm is awesome however.

Not knocking your new 6mm I thinks it’s interesting... but your Grendel velocity seems a bit low as does your 308, almost sounds like the adds for the 350 legend the just as good as... or better than argument under skewed data commercials haha... also a neat round but please don’t pick the lows from the competition and the high from the round you are showcasing... I too have much “real world” chronograph data and while 6arc does have an advantage it is not near the advantage that your “real world” data shows. At least as compared to my chronograph data. Thank you for producing entertaining videos and supporting our great 2nd amendment!

Looks like a cool cartridge if I could get parts for it to try it. I'm just annoyed that now all the 6.5 Grendel parts (bolts, cases etc) are being taken up by the people frothing over 6mm ARC. I liked it better when people were freaking out over 6.5 CM and leaving us 6.5 Grendel guys alone. IMO if SIG's new case tech works out and becomes commercially available, the 6.5 Grendel would get even better (as would ALL calibers FWIW) and let me put a 123gr pill put of the barrel at 5.56 speeds. I love the Grendel. Ive taken an elk and several deer and it never let's me down hunting the mountains of Idaho.

Diff between a 6mm ARC and a .243 is the barrel twist. The standard 6mm ARC vs .243 standard at same barrel length. 6mm can handle the higher BC 108s better than the 1 in 9.5 twist .243 hence it catches and passes it in bullet drop and foot lbs out past 500 yds

The 6 looks good, but still uses the Grendel case. With people still having pressure issues breaking bolts, is this going to now transfer to the ARC? I’m pretty well invested in the 6.8 as it is, and the problem I see with all of these -15 cartridges is they are unable to get the kinetic energy to justify their use at ranges past 4-600yds for anything other than pinching paper. It just seems to be the limitation of the casing. I wish the development of the arc utilized a casing a little more forgiving in an AR-15 platform. I’ll keep up to date with the progress, but will likely stick with the 6.8 that is highly effective at practical ranges for the platform and utilizing a case less prone to parts breakages. Thanks for the vid

the grendel bolts issue was on people's lips 10 years ago. Now a days people make bolts even thinner than for the Grendel, like the POF revolution: a 308 bolt for an AR15 sized carrier (some bolt diameter as .223 but with a .308 case head cut out, very thin side walls). The Grendel bolt issue wasn't a problem with the grendel. It was a metallurgy issue.

The advantage for 6.5 grendel to me is rifle weight. The .308 iis a much heavier platform. The 6.5 allows a slightly bigger bullet in the 123 over the arcs 108 . It's a 108gr vs a 123gr both having the same muzzle energy and there's not a huge disparity in weight there so why would Grendel be the "terminal ballistics winner"?
@dakotatactical4852
@dakotatactical4852 2 жыл бұрын
The Grendel fps seems low to me. I load the 123 gr at about 2450 fps out of my 20" barrel and according to my brass I could go higher. My 130 gr Bergers are about the same velocity and it is an amazing bullet in the Grendel. Wind drift is much better on Berger also. Let's face it neither the 6mm or the 6.5 the absolute maximum yards I would attempt on either would be 400 yards. Yes you might hit the deer but it very well may not kill humanely. Those are really the only numbers that mean anything. Any time a bullet gets below 2200 fps the wound cavity will shrink substantially, and make a hole the diameter of the bullet. Paper punching, well that's another story and there are better calibers that are better for long range shooting. The smaller the bullet diameter and weight the poorer long range potential IMO. Look at a 30 caliber 200 gr high bc bullet. The only other factor is speed. The faster you launch it the better it performs.

Fun discussion and a great opportunity to geek out! Realistically, vast majority of people leaving comments about 1000 yards have never even seen what a target looks like at that distance, let alone shoot at it. 6.5 Grendel is a fantastic round, specially for hunting. I'm going 6mm because I want to reach out to varmints with my 15 platforms, since I refuse to build myself an LR308. The 6mm bullets buck the wind better that other calibers, that's why I put a .243win up against any long range target round. Really looking forward to seeing what you build around that ARC.

Agree with everything you say. However an important point not discussed in your and most other similar videos is what the 6.5 Grendel was designed to do. Basically the 6.5 Grendel was not designed for target or hunting (where expanding rounds are permitted) shooting. It was specifically designed for the military in so far as it was designed to have the hitting power of an AK47 whilst keeping the accuracy of the 5.56 NATO round.

Great video as always! Outstanding numbers for the 6mm Arc as compared to the 6.5 Grendel. The more I learn about the 6mm Arc, the more I'm thinking about building another upper. But haven't decided if I want a 16, 18, or 20 inch barrel. Cmmg has 16 and 20 inch barrel only for this caliber. After watching your range testing video I'm leaning more towards the 16 inch barrel. been looking for the brass also and reloading components. This caliber is pointless if you are already into another caliber like 6.5 grendel or 6.8. It's nice in theory but not practical to get a new setup if you are already invested in one of those calibers. Also 6.5 has the added benefit of cheap steel cased for plinking.

Only issue is the BC for the AEC round will be better than that of the Grendel for the same bullet weight. I would be more concerned about which round would have the better hunting bullets. Grendel has a reputation for not opening /mushrooming properly on game animals. The AEC might have better hunting bullets available and increased bullet speed would help it open properly.

Rule of thumb for hunting . You want 800 - 1000 ft for deer.. You want 1000 -1250 For Hoggs.. You want 1300 and up for elk.. Moose 1800 and up.. Bullet selection is King when it comes to taking game. Me personally I only use Nosler Partition or Accubond. My personal Hunting rig is 18" Wilson Combat Tactical Hunter 308 Win with 1-8× Optic. I only use Nosler or Federal Premium 165g Partition. I've taken elk out to 300 yards and they dropped with 10 yards. Normal hunting distances are 350 yards and in for 90% of all hunting. Even though the 6 ARC can achieve those energy requirements for elk . I personally would NOT use it . Elk are very very tough . You want something heavy and hard rocking that elk . Obviously placement is key. I'm a firm believer in having 1 rifle for all your hunting needs. For me it's the 308 . It's perfect for deer , Hogs , and elk . It can be used for moose just keep it within 200 yards and use 180g Accubond or Partition ..

To me he’s comparing the 6mm and 6.5 Grendel, which are kinda in their own class, to the 308 which is a whole ‘nother step up in calibers. It’s like comparing the 6.5 Creedmoor to an 300 win mag. Yes trajectories may be similar but energy is entirely different. Bottom line is ballistic apps are really cool though. Who would have thought you could spend a couple bucks on a good app and take all that tech with you shooting.

Sectional density, bullet expansion and penetration are what needs to be looked at for hunting something like elk. I've seen elk taken at 400 yards with the grendel. With 130 grain bullets. Personally (which is really what it comes down to) as much as I love my grendel. I'll take my 270 9 times out of 10 for something as big as elk. I am not sold on the 6mm ARC, or the 6.5 PRC, CM or any of those. If you want to bang steel, put holes in paper, that's one thing. Hunting ain't any of that. If you're hunting small to medium sized game fine but not large game. How far away do you need to get from an animal to satisfy your need for long distance sniping. You guy's don't talk about sectional density, the bullets ability to drive through it's target. your standard response is something like, "first of all you have to hit your target". While there is something to that argument, you still have to reach through to the vitals. If you hit a bone on the way through with a light bullet, you have a wounded animal. Most of us are not good enough to reach out as far as you "snipers". Wound channel is also something you guy's don't talk about. You snipers! A .308 caliber or even a .270 caliber with a larger frontal diameter will have a larger wound channel and give everyone a better chance at recovering that game. Three to four hundred yards for 99% of us is about as far as a responsible hunter should shoot. I know, you "snipers" think you can do it. Every time I see this attitude of "snipers", it just makes me want to be sick. I bet most of you leave wounded game out there.

Sir, I believe this is a viable option in the AR platform. I have looked at the data and believe in the reasoning for this. Some will look at this strictly as a 'wildcat'. However, as for Department of Defense and military, it will be as to what remains/becomes the standardized cartridge. For the average rifleman it is still 5.56mm.When the 6.8mm came out DOD did not adopt that (as a whole) for their cartridge. The popularity of this cartridge will be left to what ammunition logisticians influence decision makers to stockpile for the next 50 years or so. Nice video.

@Nick Rodriguez Maybe it will penetrate LV4 armor @ 400 yards maybe it won't either way what difference does that make to me? Like they're going to let us have AP ammo for it shit they won't even let us have 7N6 and they tried their damndest to ban M855 in 2015 they're not letting any of us have AP for this so dream on. It's the equivalent ballistics to 270 WIN which won't penetrate LV4 with commercially available ammo either. Also it's more than a speculation that the barrel life will be poor it's physics. Hell SAAMI spec for max pressure on 7mmRM is only 61,000 PSI on a 0.284 bore diameter and the new 6.8 is a 0.270 bore at 80,000 PSI. The thing is going to chew through barrels because again physics and the military isn't looking at this as a replacement for the 556 M16/M4 rifles it's being looked at for the DMR role.

The 6mm ARC was clearly more accurate all throughout the ranges tested to the point I felt bad for the guy who bought a separate rifle instead of an upper. He was shooting 90grn SMKs in th 224 Valkyrie which I know had problems, but I think all of this had been fixed by the time this video was produced.

Wonder kids of the moment seldom last long. The 6mm ARC will be the same, here today, gone tomorrow.

The 6ARC is prob the option if your choosing a competition round. If on the other hand your wanting an AR 15 cartridge that hits a ton harder than the 223/5.56, is available in affordable steel case to use for predators/whitetail deer/self defense... GRENDEL ALL DAY LONG IF you're competing in an "Unknown Sniper" comp...might want to choose the 6ARC

I have the 308,6.5 they are great calibers,they shot heavier bullet for big game that's all great stuff,but do they fit in a AR platform ? The 6arc does fit in a AR platform, and does it very good it's legal to hunt deer with,it has little recoil being able to stay on target,something you can't do with larger calibers,to me the 6arc made the AR platform perfect,the way it was designed for,make no mistake,after 600 yards it catches the 308 in performance,and step out with the 6.5 at long range,did I mention how little the recoil is?My long range follow up shots are fast,it's shoots harder,and further then the .223.I now would like one in a pistol platform I think it would be better then a full size barrel in the .223,but lighter,and more concealable.I would suggest that everyone have one,it would also make a good counter sniper setup,I think taking all aspects of shooting into consideration,it's a winner that's for sure.
