I don't think you get it. People can be sent to solitary for simple things that you & I know aren't worth it. Reporting staff, filing grievances, protecting yourself from gang violence, writing letters to expose criminal activity within the prison - can get you sent to solitary!! Keep in mind this country falsely sentences many people on a daily basis!! You don't sound like someone who knows anything about our prison system.

solitary confinement does NOTHING. I don't understand the point of locking someone up for 23 hours is gonna help them? Especially since 80 per cent who were in solitary end up back on the streets eventually. Long term solitary like 5, 10, 15 etc years will do more damage than anything. Treat someone like an animal, they will end up like an animal. You wouldn't even treat a dog like this.

Solitary can't be mimicked, it can't be experienced virtually to gain an understanding of what it is to be confined to solitary imprisonment. It can't let you experience the isolation after days inside. You can't know the damn near freezing temperature CO's set it to with no way to stay warm. The noises from the inmates screaming, crying, slamming in the cells around the pod. The harassment from the guards who find pleasure in tormenting inmates by making sleep impossible. Until you end up in the hole you just can't understand what it's like.

really sorry to hear that. i've been doing a lot of research on policy surrounding imprisonment especially wrt solitary confinement, and it's completely outrageous that people are forced to withstand this shit. i guess you can "make an argument" that there is some practical organizational logic informing SHUs, SMUs or CCRs when you consider them in the context of super-max prisons (not to mention regular prisons). regardless though, from a psychological and ethical standpoint, it's an abhorrent, evil practice. idk if you want to answer, but why were you put in solitary? how long were you there?
@Quagigitymire
@Quagigitymire 8 жыл бұрын
jumpyourbone First off I must say that I live in Maricopa county, home of the bigot megalomaniac self proclaimed toughest sheriff in the world, Joe "I'm a media whore piece of trash" Arpaio. I will leave my feelings on him and his nearly sadistic ways for a different discussion to avoid the 100,000 word youtube comment. In county, Arpaio's personal dungeon, an inmate can wind up in the "hole" for the most trivial of things. Once you are in the hole they strip you down to nothing but your pink boxers and you are locked in a small cell that often smells like shit, literally. You are given a suicide blanket and a mat that is as good as plywood to sleep on. The guards seem to get off on tormenting the inmates in the SHU. They will often beat on the doors to make sleeping as difficult as possible, they crank down the A/C to what feels like -10 when you have nothing but boxers and a blanket the size of a normal towel, they keep the bright ass lights on all day and night. State prison is quite a different thing than county. In state the guards know the inmates truly run the prison and respect is given or it will be taken. The SHU is far less punishing and you have to do something actually deserving of it to be placed there, or you are there by choice or need protection. Yes, you are alone, but the cells are larger than county, you still get your clothes, your radio, your tv if you have one. You only get 1 hour to 4 hours a day rec out of your cell and even worse is the once per 4 days shower. As to why I ended up in either isn't something I am all that interested in speaking of. I do hope you understand, being such a public forum and all. If you would like any questions answered that I am able to I am happy to do so.

When I was in city jail for almost 24 hours (in the U.S., by the way), there were no other inmates with me. I had three cells to myself. A couple magazines, playing cards, and a table. Mind you, I'm an extremely non-social person (anti-social is the wrong term, yet is used all too often), but I even felt some anxiety from being in that environment. The whole prison system is all fucked up (again, at least from the U.S.'s point-of-view), and the fact that we don't do enough to prevent people going into these institutions in the first place is a shame. Let the rich maintain their Epicurean illusions and push trickle-down economics on the working class as crumbs brushed to the dogs under a dinner table.
@tappiera

+IIllytch321 actually, i read that they make big money off prisons so makes sense to imprison more people to get richer. Tbh personally I think if you really want to convert a person to be an asset to society, prison is definitely not in that path :/
@IIllytch321nonadinfinitum

Enrico Aquilina Sadly, you're right. However, there is a place for separating certain individuals from society, but: 1. It should not be done for every little instance of social deviance, and 2. More steps should be taken while the person is incarcerated to better themselves to be, as you said, an asset to their society. Also, having compassion for these people and actually trying to understand where they're coming from and why they do what the do in the first place is the first step in helping them (as best as we can, some people may be beyond it) and, preferably, preventing such situations in the future. Educational and economic reform are necessary in the U.S.. Bernie Sanders planted a seed, and hopefully that seed will gain momentum and begin to find fertile human soil to grow. Peace.

Faith in humanity has been lost, even before we implemented laws for human rights. We would be no better if we be putting murderers, rapist, abusers to death by various methods. Even though most of or not all the above deserve the death punishment. Life sentence is just as pointless because the convicted of that sentence can't be rehabilitated. I love the USA and our prison system isn't the best, but most of them monsters deserve where they need to be.

But I do believe instead of just locking them up in SC and allowing this anger to build up inside of them the prisons could find ways to teach them they're loved and can be forgiven. Because the only way for one to move on from the past mistakes and look forward to a new future, a better future is to start with breaking the past and forgiving themselves and others forgiving them. They could find ways to break the pattern. BUT WITH THIS THEIR IS LINES THAT CAN BE CROSSED! They have to earn those privileges.

I spent years in a hospital behind a locked door… able to go for smoke breaks but sometimes they would take away your passes for many days for this and that. It was torturous… getting through it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, on many occasions… if you didn’t stay calm and keep it together it drives you crazy…

Why don't they give these guys a PS4 and let them play Grand Theft Auto or something? At least for the guys who are never getting out, being able to explore a realistic city, drive cars, fly planes etc could actually reduce stress and violence in these guys, and even being able to drive over pedestrians and shoot them in the game would also be a release for them and in turn reduce REAL life violence.

I think you kind of miss the point. Solitary confinement is for people who have done the worst a human can do according to the laws, or who have shown to be a danger to other inmates. There are people sitting in solitary confinement, like El Chapo for example, who have a high amount of kills to their name and who have done terrible things to the world. Not sure if you know this, but terrorists from the middle east who have been capture and imprisoned who out right say that people from their group would rather die then get caught and sent to an American prison. Solitary is for the worst of folks. You want to know about a different kind of solitary? Look up sensory deprivation or white room torture. There no blood spilt, no choking, no stabbing. Just a white room with white clothes, nothing but white. Anyone who has legit been in solitary knows you have to keep yourself busy. Play a counting game, throw a small object in the room with your eyes closed and try to find it, try to memorize any reading material you are given, work out, make the most of your one hour outside, invent scripts to movies in your head, meditate. Solitary is not impossible to live in if you can think for yourself. Many people lose it in there because they can't figure out how to cope.

There is a way bigger picture here and I’d say 99% of the people in the comments don’t see it mostly due to their lack of knowledge and not caring enough, but the funny thing is the government they love so much has made them who they are today and everyone else. Control the environment people live in and you can mold a lot of them into whatever it is you want. So what I am saying is our government has hugely been the whole reason why people do what people do. The really sad part of it all is the fact you can drag a horse to a river but to get the damn thing to drink you will find to be very difficult and it will die of thirst that it never knew it needed.
