Many people have decent tractors with a rough running Kohler engine. The problem is there is no direct replacement BUT Briggs & Stratto makes this 31R907-0007-G1 500cc 17.5 Gross HP Engine with 1-Inch by 3-5/32-Inch Length Crankshaft Tapped 7-16-20-Inch that works perfectly on my STX 38 that had a Kohler Command engine as long as you don't mind not running a hood. There is another version of this Briggs & Stratton motor that has the proper exhaust but it is more expensive.
For the wiring, it is very simple. Red wire on the JD goes to the red wire on the voltage regulator on the B&S. The white wire on the JD goes to the black wire on the B&S. There was a yello wire on my STX that was hot in on and crank and I connected that to the gray feul solenoid wire on the B&S. Started right up.
I did have to clearance the fuel tank plastic ribbing a bit which you will see in the video. Other than that it was pretty straightforward.
Oh and you do need a 7/16 fine thread bolt 4" long. The original is a 3/8 fine thread on the Kohler.
