Hey Bruce, I've fixed up 5 of the STX38's for resale. Great machines if you know their quirks. The Kohlers like 10w30 oil. The float and needle is prone to allowing fuel to leak by if you don't have a manual valve. And if you get one that the throttle is acting all weird, check to see that the lever on the top of the carb is actually tight on the throttle rod and the butterfly is actually moving properly. Another great video, my fellow Canadian!

I have the same fuel in my oil and might be why it was hard to start being hydro locked. I went to adjust the valves to see if that was why it was not turnover properly when I would try and start it so pulled the valve cover and about an ounce of fuel came out. So I took off the oil fill cap and could smell the gas was obviously on the oil. So got a new carb for now tO put on which came with a shut off valve which my Ariens 42 inch lawman tractor did not have for the 18.5 hp Briggs. I hope since I’ve had this hard to turnover to start most the time I’ve had it. I hear the Niki carbs that came on these which is what is on mine are junk. I bought a RIPP brand carb which had great reviews but read best carb is a Walbro that wakes these Briggs right up. So he,Ed to figure out what one it needs if this ne RIPP carb doesn’t work so well. Just sucks having an real nice lawn mower that every time I would go out to use it the thing wouldn’t turn over. So I would turn it by hand on the top of the engine to where it’s past compression then hit the starter but then that stopped working after buying two new batteries and burning out the original starter. Either way the Briggs has this compression release that breaks all the time I hear which is unexceptable. If I knew this I wouldn’t have bought a mower with a Briggs.

To get the old carb to function properly you have to replace the seat. I had the same problem several times. The only way to get the replaceable seat is to by a complete master rebuild kit. The part number is 12-521-03-s for the gravity fed model. The electric fuel pump model is 12-521-04-s.

Hi Bruce, love your channel and have learned much from you. I do have a question for you or the troops. I have a John Deere STX38 yellow deck. When my fuel shutoff is turned off, I have no leaking of fuel beneath the carburetor. When I open the fuel shutoff valve, I get dripping beneath the carburetor. Gas doesn’t appear to be leaking into my crankcase. I tested the fuel solenoid or anti run on solenoid and it operates properly by drawing down with 12 volts or springing up without voltage. I noticed that plunger has a rubber tip. Could that rubber plug cause a leak if it were bad or does it ultimately have to be the needle and seat in the carb? Thank you in advance. And thanks again for educating us.
@BrucesShop3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure. I would suspect a needle and seat. I only say that as just how the numbers go that is the most common.

How's she goin'? You have done a lot of work on this mower over the years and I think you don't want it to die, so you work extra hard to keep it running. Good fix here. I have a '97 Honda ATV that was leaking fuel like this mower. It turned out to be the pin on the float was worn so bad the float couldn't raise the needle far enough to shut off the fuel. A new carb was the answer there too!!! Great video Take care!!

@jeffreykreft54423 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, just started watching your videos. Just so you know you didn’t have to replace the carburetor, you can tell by looking at the float level that it was way too low, infamous with the Waldron carbs. All you need to do is replace the needle and seat and I would also replace the float just because they are only a few bucks. Anyway when you press in the new brass seat you have to be careful not to go too far down, check the float height, you want it just above level to insure it seals, then bench test it again like you did in the beginning and it should be good to go. This repair should only cost you about $15 and you won’t have to bother with aftermarket carbs, most of them are junk and almost always require readjusting. This saves you the headache of having to do all that bs. Hope this helps, love the videos, just started going through them all.

Donyboy warns against the Chinese inline shutoff valves. They always leak eventually. He uses the Briggs & Stratton version, which looks absolutely identical but holds up. A few bucks more. If the crankcase fills with fuel, there are obviously two problems -- the carb and the inline valve (assuming the valve was kept in the 'off' position).

Yes it is a crapshoot. With Honda's and these the imported carbs are ok. Many however need work when they come in. For example yu have to mdify the throttle shaft t the old one.
