Ah yes, good ol' Yammie straight up ignoring that there are markets outside the US where anything over 250cc suffers massive tax penalties, or where things like A1 and A2 licenses exist. Or that 20hp and 70+ MPG are actually desirable in a commuter bike that has to do nothing but get you from one side of town to the other during rush hour. The GSXR250R however, yes that thing isn't worth it at all. The CBR-250RR-R and ZX-250R however are freaking amazing, but those are not beginner bikes with their tiny 4 cyl screamers.
@dariuszzukowski52449 сағат бұрын
@fermitupoupon1754 Buying RE with 20 hp at 191 kg as a commuter city bike is nonsensical, when you can get a solid scooter, like Honda PCX: way nimbler, way cheaper, way more fuel-efficient, waaay lighter, with automatic gearbox and better brakes, and for which in EU you don't even need A1, if you have B. This RE is for no-one and serves no purpose. The only advantage I can imagine is a slightly better performance on holey roads, but then there are better and cheaper alternatives for that, too.

Like you said, the RE 350s are really neat in other countries. Definitely not fit for high speed cruising if you live in the US, the thumper just does not output enough power (plus at least here they're electronically limited to 120kph/75mph) but in the places where RE cares about making sales - such as India, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Bangladesh, Thailand or Nepal - the price is impossible to beat due to the CKD plants, the performance is (borderline) enough for the roads, and both maintenance and insurance are cheap as hell. For comparison, in Argentina, where an average salary is about 400-500 US dollars a month, a Classic 350 is around $5,400 US dollars, while something like a Duke 390 is $11,000, a Honda CB300 Twister is just shy of $8,000 or a Yamaha R3 is nearly $12,000.
@hippolyta363814 сағат бұрын
As an aside, the XR250 ($8,000) and the new 300 are *all the rage* here despite being expensive, to the point they are also by far the most stolen motorcycle in the country. Most insurance companies will refuse to cover XRs against theft or destruction because how common it is for them to get stolen or ridden by maniacs.

I would love to see a special just to talk about how the bike community is different in other parts of the world. For example, here in chile a 400cc it is not a beginner ride, a 125 up to 200/250 it is considered a beginner ride,
@kushagraN13 сағат бұрын
Yup. Same here in India. Here the 350 RE's are a midsize bike. Not entry level. Literally everyone starts on 100-125cc scooters/bikes. Most people use them as commuters & the only consideration is comfort & fuel efficiency. Bajaj literally sells a bike with a CNG tank that is rated for 100km/kg of fuel.
@Mrbuchnev110 сағат бұрын
Interesting. Here in Latvia a 600cc bike is considered a beginner bike. A 750-800cc is a middle-weight and anything above or including 1000cc - a "proper" bike. There's very little demand for anything below 500-600cc. But that's mainly because you're riding a 600cc bike on the exam and you're already used to this kind of power. So when you get your driving license, you don't really see the point to settle for anything smaller than 600cc.
@ASutt236 сағат бұрын

Test rode one in a Demo Day setup. It was quick to go and stop. Just that I'm too old to put up with that much weight on my hands/wrists for long. I was gripping the tank with my legs as often as I could remember to do so, and that helped keep it off my hands. I just prefer a more upright stance like a naked bike. But if you want a beginner sport bike, the CFMOTO 450SS is quite good, at least in my test ride. No clue on the long-term reliability.

You seem to still think we’re back in the 2010s when bikes were purely recreational! With inflation, stagnant wages, and the average new car costing over 40 grand people are going to have to start buying bikes to replace their second car. To save money using a bike requires some brutal compromises. The bike has to get great mileage (my car gets 42 mpg, a commuter bike should get 70-80), be cheap to insure, be easy to maintain (meaning do-it-yourself because dealers are $$$$) and thus simple (anyone can handle air cooled, one cylinder, two valve chain drive bike) with a very low cost of entry. In a harsh economy a recreational bike is a luxury most won’t be able to afford. Unless current trends change, of course.

Everyone is talking about how easy air-cooled bikes are to work on. The thing is, lots of entry-level water cooled bikes are also easy to work on. Most are the equivalent of cars from the 70s and 80s at best. As for electrical, is an electrical system with like 6-8 fuses that intimidating to you?

@edouardl22 сағат бұрын
I do own an XR 150 and it is to be used properly, this is a farm bike with a large tank and decent comfort. It can go into some limited offroad and tops roughly at 100 KPH. This is a perfect bike to learn driving if you use it for what it is designed ie not high speed and not single trail. Big advantage over trail bikes is better saddle and high autonomy but still very light weight. Furthermore, repairs are cheap which is a plus for a new rider which will fall more than once. Now, it is clear it is an entry level bike with primitive instruments and equipment but it is a very good bike if you live in the countryside or in a city but don't travel on fast highways. I wouldn't dismiss it for a first bike as long as you use it as per the way it was designed. For the Versys 300, i absolutely enjoyed it, it had decent power (40 HP), confidence inspiring drive and able to go on light trails too. Power is good enough to go on any highway without problems, weight is manageable and engine is bullet proof. True it doesn't have sophisticated tools like TC but this is not needed for that power. You don't need to be an IT engineer to drive it which makes it in my view a very good first bike, Now, i have KTM 790 ADV but I still miss the Versys which was easy to drive anywhere thanks to the weight. XR may be questionable as first bike unless proper environment but I wouldn't dismiss Versys at all whatever the place.

The 401 Himalayan was only meant to stay in the domestic market, wouldn’t call that a fail. In Latin America, the Honda XR 150L is a very desirable bike, it’s almost $3200 here, I agree, too expensive for 0 updates in almost 3 decades just cause it says Honda. Down here small displacement bikes are the norm, a tool and a common means of transportation, unlike in the US which is 9/10 a toy. My commute is 7 miles in northwest CT so great backroads, but also looking for something I can cruise on for hours on end. My top three I am looking at are the Royal Enfield shotgun 650, Honda Shadow Phantom 750, and Honda Rebel 1100. Midlife crisis buy yes... looking to break the sound barrier no, just want a good all around bike I wont get tired of that can be comfortable if I decide to hop on the highway and travel a few hundred miles. Its good to know what NOT to look into. Thanks :)
@amerigo889 сағат бұрын
You better be fairly short legged to ride a Shadow Phantom. I test rode the Rebel 1100 and it is a screamer - which I loved. Afraid I cannot recommend it for a noob as carrying too much speed into a corner is a cinch on the Rebel that shares the Honda Africa Twin engine. That's what gets most new riders killed - too fast and deep into a curve, then instinctively clamping the front brake lever and losing control of the bike. FYI, started riding at age 55 and am only three years in, riding my third and fourth bikes these days - KLR 650 and Harley Dyna Street Bob. I threw a leg over a Shotgun 650 and it felt and looked great. Good luck with the Royal Enfield reliability. Ridershare platform for P2P renting motorcycles reports having the most reliability problems (renters complaining of problems that can interrupt a rental period) with Royal Enfields. FWIW. YMMV

Therefore a lot of the mentioned bikes are great choices. I think a lot of people missed the message of the F9 Versys 300 video if they think it was an endorsement. He points out its comically high revving engine, even at low speeds, and after comparing it to a more typical dual sport, says the Versys 300 is pointless (though well made). If you want a dual sport, he says, get a dual sport. I'll admit, he did make the bike look sexy, but once I got the real message, I turned to other bikes. As a beginner, I shopped this segment quite thoroughly a couple of years ago, and Yam, I think your comments and criticisms are overall quite accurate. I ended up getting a Royal Enfield Scram 411 a low power, heavy bike, with a low top speed, but it'll take me anywhere. If I was buying this year, there are better options, including a few you mention, but for me at that time it was my best choice. I'm super happy with my decision and have 7,600 miles on the bike.

If it was first registered years ago it is fine, but all NEW bikes MUST have ABS by law. But is quite possibly the most popular farm bike in the country, (they can be registered to be on the road a certain short distance from the property it's registered to, but that's it.) The RE Himalayan is outselling the CFMoto 450MT here too. I'm not sure why, I don't like the aesthetics of either, but the CFMoto does seem a little better. although RE of any type are extreeeeemely common in Auckland. I guess as long as they look good and can do the 100km/h speed limit, people will ride them! the little versys... I sat on one, and I got off and sat on its closest competition (the Suzuki V-strom 250SX) and I've now sat (and stood) on that for 14000km BMW 310... look people, I'm allowed to spend my DADS money, Haha you have to buy your own bike! Honda CBR... if it aint broke, don't fix it... not suited to me for 187 reasons (and cm) but If Honda realise that people don't want "designed to fail tech" and keep going back to the older models for the reliability, then why make a new model?

I would not recommend anyone buying a new motorcycle as their first. There are to many used bikes out there that will save them a lot of money, and I personally would never recommend a single cylinder motorcycle of any kind if they are going to ride it on the road. I made that mistake back in ‘67. Using a Ducati 250 Monza as my first bike. It was used and was the worst motorcycle I’ve ever owned. Took bad advice. I should have bought a 305 twin Honda. That single left me stranded more times than not. Oh and did I tell you it vibrated. I’ve owned nothing but Hondas ever since and their reliability has been awesome.

How dare you impugn the Versys 300. I've owned a LOT of bikes in my time, from big displacement fours to big V twins and 125 scooters. The X is one of my favorites. No torque? No problem. It revs to the moon. You compare it to a KTM (bankrupt and unreliable) and a CRF300 Rally (even less than no balls, terrible on-road, not even the same kind of mission) and a new Kaw that you can't buy yet. Whya? The Versys has am excellent fine handling and ride balance, is very lightweight, and very reliable, and offers ABS- an absolute requirement. I can throw it on a hitch carrier on the Jeep in about a minute. With a Corbin seat, tall windshield and a few teeth off the rear sprocket the thing eats miles, loves curves, and is comfortable for hours. I don't think you can find more used motorcycle for the buck. Kawasaki should put the old Ninja 400 motor on it - I'd buy a new one in a minute. Have you ever actually ridden one, or just spouting off here?

A Vstar 250 is a good beginner bike, 320 lbs wet 20hp low seat height. Not great on the highway but a breeze everywhere else. Low tech commuter bikes are great.

my new Haojiang hj150-7a 's msrp is like 926usd ...it has 9.2kw or 12ps of aircooled power., 11nm of torque. and features fuel injection from american brand Delphi, no old cab. top speed 100kph, 2.4L/100km or 98Miles per Gallon...beginners' ride of choice that costs literally a fraction of any bike YaamieNoob mentions...

I was actually going to buy an XR150 when I heard it was coming to the US, until I found they deleted the kickstarter from the US version.

The RE 350s are actually very cool and characterful - as a 2nd or 3rd bike in your stable, not as your only bike. Also an A1 compliant Gixxer 125 is actually faster.

I'm an RE girl, but I have to agree about the 350 models, at least for the US and Aus markets... if it can't do highway speed with a little oomph left to overtake, it's just not suited to our driving conditions. If you love the look of the 350s, find the extra cash for a 650 and you won't be disappointed.
@jjk99994 сағат бұрын
The RE classic 350 seemed a perfect first bike until I learned that taxes were an added 1/3rd the price. For $4k they seemed pretty good and stylish, but for $6k (after taxes) it's total crap compared to used bikes you can get for under $6k. The 650cc super meteor and the new 650 classic might be better for the price I don't know.

11:43 Actually, have never seen the XR150 in India. They are pretty common in SE Asia, especially in Vietnam where I've seen plenty of these bikes in rentals. Most likely, a lot have been tuned with parts that are not Honda certified, some are even considered "Chinese Hondas" or Fake Hondas there. The one I rode had a shit chassis, it is probably the most barebones bike I rode in my life. But damn driving on twisties with that bike was fun!

Best beginner bike is Honda CB500F/NC700 due to it's fairly fat tyres, given it's engine power. 120/160mm tyres have much larger contact patch than all 300ccm bikes mentioned in video, since they are usually equipped with 110/140 tyres or something similar.
@mociczyczki13 сағат бұрын
its not that simple …. thiner tores dont necessery mean smaller contact path it depend on tires construction its profile and deflection charactersitics + how big force /weight push them to the tarmac the biger obviously the biger conatact path is create due to tire deflect compresss more 👌🏻 some tire give biger CP only at very specified angle than some other tires feg i have pirelli doablo rosso 3 which have biger contact path in big angle in corner than pirelli sport demon but on straight when bike was upright it have smaller conatact path and obviously both tires have diffrent compund so another part to story ….👌🏻beside 300-400 cc bikes are lighter so they push less stresss on tires …. beside even assuming you have more CP it can be easy compensate be stockier tire compund assuming you have less stickier 😉👌🏻 what really gives biger tires is they better amortization bumps and holes on road what they cant do as well as thiner tires is they required more force from driver leverage for force bike to lean and they required biger lean angle for defeat the same corner on the same line with the same speed cos offset from vertical tire axis is biger asssuming similar tire profile offcorse anyways thers plenty + and - for having woder and thiner tires also wider tires usually last longer as they have more compound 👌🏻 feg moto 3 bikes with super thin tires can go the same fast in corner if not faster than moto gp with big fat tire check telemtry data + wider tire mean you have biger unspring weight mass however tires compresion deflection itself probably co apensate this factor with suply as i mentioned erarlier on boger tires bike defeat bad wuality road more stable and more comfortable 😉👌🏻…..

Yes I think you are wrong about old school tech. Reliable, easy to work on and great fun for the purpose. I have an Indian Hero Eco 150 trail. I'm 72 and do lots of offroading. Similar engine to XR 150. 14 HP and top end 120. Price about US $1200... Fun at low price with 100 000km or 5 year warranty. More fun than any duel sport I've owned

Yeah ~ a lot of this is extremely subjective. I agree with the concept, but then I spent 40 odd years riding ever bigger & faster & more powerful bikes. The world has changed in radical ways since I was a 17 year old (or something) looking to buy my first bike. And the whole concept is highly debatable. One example ~ for much of my riding life, the market has been well supplied with 250cc "Cruisers" that look like little Harleys. They tended to make something like 15 or 20 hp and not be able to keep up in group rides, partly because the beginner rider, and partly because the thing was tapped out. Handling and chassis and grip and dynamics, were no better than the power to weight ~ terrible. But if I call out the Mighty 250 Virago as a play-thing, a boat anchor, then half the riders out there are going to jump on me because that's where they started. I have a fairly small opinion of the modern Royal Enfields, but [shrug] value for money I guess. I did get to ride a Rickman Enfield in about '85, (made in the early '60s I think, like me) and the thing horrified me. It was awful! And that one was (probably still is) held to be a 'classic'. The one genuine 650 Trumpie Bonneville I rode, that was a much nicer bike, but still objectively nothing like as good as a mid '80s UJM of about the same capacity. What am I trying to say? It all gets very complicated. It all depends very much on the individual and their circumstances, and ... lots of things. Small 'learner-friendly' bikes tend to be bargain basement, and that's not exactly a surprise. So~ don't expect MotoGP levels of power or handling and braking or ~ Should we bag them for that? [sniff] Well I'm still not going to complement or recommend a 250 Virago ~ no matter how many people defend them. But that's me. What I think is "better" or "worse" or terrible, that might not line up with what the new rider thinks.

I own a 2022 RE Classic 350 and a 2025 RE Himi 450. The classic 350 makes a lot of sense where I live, Bogota, Colombia. BUt I can see how in the USA that might not be the case.

Talks down on the versys x300, but has nothing to say about an R3. Nearly the same power output and similarly priced on the used market. I will say all of your picks are dead right when buying new, but if buying used a lot of them are perfect due to low prices and low demand. The Honda, Royal Enfield 350s, and the BMW are all pretty much trash though.

Can You Feature Low CC Bikes that are "Actually Good"?
@brendanshroyer76966 сағат бұрын
That would be a very short video (at least, based on Yammie's preferences). Pretty much all the bikes in the video are good low cc bikes. Yammie just dislikes anything under 400cc except the Grom (because he sees it as a toy). I personally have a Royal Enfield Hunter 350 and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a nice relaxed city bike with enough power to be fun and ride on the highway, but now enough that I have to worry about getting into too much trouble.
