Maybe this is unwanted input, but was there no other therapist available to set this up with? It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth (& probably other people's mouth, too) how unprofessional she acted in the Jake Paul-"documentary" series of the uber-problematic Shane Dawson. She called the symptoms of Anti-Social Personality Disorder "gross" & wanted to "take a shower" after reading the list of symptoms in the DSM-5. She didn't disclose her "assesment" of Jake Paul to him or his team - in front of the camera at least. And she never discouraged the "diagnosis" of a personality disorder or mental illness on a person she hasn't tested let alone met yet. It was highly unethical. And it did lasting damage to the already stigmatized people with this illness. And her association with Shane Dawson makes me even more wary of her. Especially right now. Anyways, you can invite who you want & feel bring the most to the table. I just wanted to give some food for thought.

Sounds great and looking forward to the workshop. Please don't direct us to invest in these horrible companies. The reviews on Aspiration are all negative *dating back three years. Everyone who isn't paid to give a review has given a negative one. I already lost a good chunk of change following one sponsor. THANK YOU FOR #7. I'm almost 35 and spent the vast majority of my adulthood in a relationship- one of those serial monagomists. Been single for 2.5yrs straight at this moment and I'm loving it, can't imagine being in a relationship now, especially during this pandemic. I have lots of personal growth I want to do, and I don't want children so there's no pressure to find a partner ASAP. I'm not saying I'll always be single but if it turns out I'm happier that way then that's fine too. I think/hope our culture will shift to supporting this and more living communities of people who are childless and not in romantic partnership.

I’m much older than the average viewer - but if I could just give perspective on #7: I got married in my early 30s because my closest friends were in serious relationships and I started feeling left out. I loved my husband, but probably didn’t choose wisely. I’m now divorced and people are now trying to pressure me to get into a new relationship! Re #2, I think we often forget that the sheer acting of buying this, especially new things when we don't actually need them, can be incredible wasteful. Not buying anything is better than buying the new beautifully "unpackaged" thing. So often times, even without intention, people who spend less money in general, whether by choice or circumstance, are actually living much more sustainably than your favorite eco-glam influencer. There's a special type of class shame that goes along with the environmental aesthetic which is particularly misplaced (not that any class shaming is well-placed) because pooper people are likely living much more sustainably even if it doesn't look the "right" way.

completely agree, i live in Argentina where inflation rates are over the roofs so I have to weight down almost everything i'm going to buy, so if I don't need it I won't buy it, and it's like that for the majority of people here. when I watch entertainment from USA it blows my mind the amount of waste they produce because they're almost addicted to buy things, even if they don't need it at all. it's crazy but i know that even if we live in a "poor" country we as individuals are doing much better for the environment than people who can afford to to buy eco friendly thing that they don't need.

Ignore those recommendations and find a personal banker to talk to you instead. If they are good, they will be able to look at where you are at and where you want to be realistically and help you see how to get there. I felt terrible comparing myself to the generic numbers for my age - until I met with a banker and left feeling so great about what I have accomplished and that I am exactly on track. Your savings and retirement are bespoke to your unique life and no website can get to every nuance of your own life and your goals. #7 is SO important, I'm so happy you included it. Personally I do think our society is set up to financially benefit people in relationships over those that remain single (just look at how impossible it is to get an affordable 1bd as a single person), to a point where I think people staying in bad (or even just not great) situations because they can't afford an alternative is more prevalent than we think. omg the amount of importance placed on jobs and the way we talk about jobs is SO TOXIC! ive felt the initial like very overtly measuring up whenever i meet someone only to get asked the obvious question like oh what do you do and im like well i graduated law school and then its like OH! as if my humanity is conditioned on your approval of my profession. im just like wow wtf what if i wasnt?! it's particularly evident when the first information given is of my parent's background, which is of latin american heritage, so the subsequent surprise and "approval" is even more obvious... ESPECIALLY bc as we are very well aware that having latin american heritage comes with a lot of assumptions that are just not true. im just so glad that i already have a strong foundation of family and friends that i dont need to care at all and this only happens at like friends' bday get togethers or something similar. on the flip side i COMPLETELY agree that there is also so much pressure for people to have a partner and married by a certain age and ive experienced both in different ways. ive been with my high school sweetheart for over a decade and ill admit idk what to say to some single ppl when they say omg ill never find anybody bc i know they are beautiful people on their own but i also know they do want to have a partner. so im not going to sit here and be like oh its ok to be single when its not what they want but also i feel like its a bit condescending. lolll and i know the dating pool as an adult is abysmal and ive been incredibly lucky. AT THE SAME DAMN TIME we are not married yet. marriage has never been a priority for either one of us. we're not against it but it was never urgent, never a rush, we just genuinely enjoyed being together and now living together.... APPARENTLY going against society and blowing away peoples minds bc ppl have strong feelings about our situation and we're both here like why do you care. ppl ASSUME that as the woman im here like begging for a ring and that he made me wait forever when that wasnt the case at all. and people cannot fathom being happy for a couple just for existing but the relationship is only valid once there is a legal document. so when we did get engaged it was more of a sigh of relief for everybody else as opposed to an actual celebration of us so yes TLDR ppl and their judgmental selves can go away. lmao so thank you again for making another important video to spread the radical idea that we can live the lives we want!

Number 5 is so true. I’ve lived in Chicago for four years, and while I enjoy the city, it’s definitely not the magical city everyone considers. My rent is expensive, I don’t get to own a car because of how expensive parking is, food is pricey and people are generally less friendly compared to a smaller midwestern city (Minneapolis, Indy, Omaha etc). I’m thankful I live here but I know there’s plenty of opportunities out there in smaller communities.

When I was a high school student in the 1980s, I had easy access to a school guidance counselor who literally helped to guide me on a path to college. I could literally drop in to the office at any time between classes and talk to the counselor, even in my very large school. I received advice on college programs, funding, and even about what types of grades and test scores were needed to attend the colleges I was interested in. I now work in higher education and from what I've heard, most schools have cut funding for counselors, and they don't have anywhere near the level of staffing needed to provide the kind of help I received to make the transition from high school to college and all the decisions involved in that process. Most young people don't even have much choice as to where they receive their college education. The college that is accessible to one might not have a high-quality program in one's chosen field, or even have that program at all. So it's very likely that one would attend college and not end up in the career that they envisioned at 18. (And all this before we even mention the job market!) P.S. This doesn't mean that you won't end up in a job that you love. It just might not be what you expected when you started out.

Regarding #2, I feel like yes, there are only so many things we can do as an individual to help the planet, but it can also be an excuse to do nothing at all. Sure, you might not have access to great public transit or can't afford a Prius, but I'm sure there are ways to make changes in your life such as eating as many plant based meals as possible or shopping second hand before buying something new for example.
@kiterafrey
@kiterafrey 4 жыл бұрын
And many people do those things, but still get shamed. I grew up reusing things like margarine tubs as Tupperware & only shopping second hand. But, people still shamed me for not having the money to buy organic, not having the ability to bike everywhere because of how far from the city I lived, or how my mom “wasted” plastic because she was diabetic and had to take insulin and the products for needles and kits are single use. People are shit, and the vast majority, especially online nowadays, just want to pick on people for not being “perfect.” People who live in food deserts don’t have access to much unpacked food People who are low income can’t always afford things that are better for the planet And #fact people online throw a fit about them. Chelsea is addressing those people being shamed who are doing their best & telling those doing the shaming to knock it the fuck off. She even said we should do our best. It is just that everyone’s best is different and we have to accept that.

I think one of the most important things you have to learn to be really grown up is to say No to things you don’t really want. Of course, for other people it’s very useful if you feel guilty about rejecting their demands on your time or money and they’ll try to make you feel bad when you do. But in the long run, you‘ll have a better life if you learn to say yes to yourself, even if that sometimes means saying no to others, be it friends, your boss, your family or your partner, and not feel guilty about it.

Just a little FYI on the fossil fuel contribution topic; it’s actually Factory Farms that are the biggest contributors to the damaging fossil fuels that lead to the depletion of the ozone layer in our atmosphere. So long story short; the best way to reduce your personal carbon footprint is to: A - have as no or as few kids as possible and B - go vegetarian/ vegan. Trust me, it will do 10x times what not driving for week or cutting down on showering would do. 💁🏽‍♀️

Plus is you do a non-fancy-meat-replacement vegan diet is so much more fiscally sound. Vit B12 pills aren’t that costly. And when I make things in my instant pot like Vegan lentil curries with coconut milk it is so much cheaper than meat. It can also be great for people who have gut issues. Going vegan got rid of 90% of my IBS C symptoms & about 1/4 of the symptoms of PCOS. But, the medical one is unique and I worked with my doctors to draft my diet.

The “dream job” for me was important. Its not about money as much as doing what I love. I don’t plan on having children but doing graphic design and photography is important to me. So important when I lost my good paying job and the freelance field was over saturated that I took a small part time job in photography for a studio. I get paid more in tips(tip your photographers most live on tips) than hourly and I’m making less than before Covid. I had to be doing something though due to my depression. I have not judged people who don’t want to work right now because of Covid or people who work more for money than doing what they love. I’m still looking for better pay but that’s hard to find right now especially in Texas.

@liz t While I wholeheartedly agree the onus shouldn't solely be on the consumer and legislation does need to play a significant role in creating a more sustainable and ethical world, you can get in a slippery slope of 'well, why bother, my $$ don't matter anyways.' And without touching on social media and influencers, I know my personal friends and family have a huge impact on the things I buy and I know vice versa. Being a part of a ripple effect on choosing to purchase certain companies and boycotting others is what motivates me to give a damn where my $$ goes.

I definitely am coming to terms with that point about prioritizing personal life versus a dream job. I'm one of those unfortunate people who in childhood were considered very intelligent and likely to go very far, and yet always under-performed due to 'lack of ambition.' I've been in the same job for 5 years and I'm not making as much as I know I can be, if I only went after more high paying and high demand jobs. But I'm fine with that. I like the work culture at my job. My manager is actually someone I feel comfortable coming to and confiding in. And I have so much free time. My job never expects me to answer emails outside of work hours. I'm almost never told to render overtime, in fact we are actively discouraged to do that, and high encouraged to use up all paid vacation leaves. I'm sleeping 8 hours per day, I can pursue my own hobbies, and I think I'm very okay with that. It's just that sometimes I clash my life that I'm actually happy now, with the life I think I could have/should have had if I went after a master's degree and applied to jobs overseas (my degree is in art history, my work is not even 3% related to it) like a lot of my university friends/classmates did (and most of them who did worse in university than I did, at least academically). I look at my other peers (I originally majored in political science) and a lot of them became lawyers or work in international relations/government, and they have such 'busy' lives, while I'm here just casually living? Like, I work. I make money (less than them, but whatever). But I have so much free time. And even saying that, I know that's the dream. People work themselves to the bone, to get to the point where they have more free time. And I'm there (albeit minus the huge nest egg), and sometimes I complain. But it's quite hard to get away from the scripts we've been fed about being busy adults living fast-paced lifestyles.

Somehow I am just so in love with TFD. It’s not easy to find people in the modern world who are so sympathetic towards unconventional life choices, which many people and I feel uncomfortable and even ashamed to talk about. I am 22 and just graduated from college. I know what I want for future, but I am shy and embarrassed to attend social events because I hate it when people keep talking about careers and your job title is the representation of who you are and your value. One time I was so so stressed at a party. After that, I know I have social anxiety disorder. And now I only feel comfortable around people who never ask too much about my career.

There are many varying reasons why a person could have feelings of guilt. And these feelings could be due to an event, situation or person. Some people, for example, have “survivor guilt.” This is when a person who survived an event feels guilty about his/her survival when others did not. For example, let’s say you were in a road accident where friends or family did not survive, but you survived. So you start to feel guilty that you survived, but the others you were with did not.

Amen to this. I live in a suburb of southern Denver. No, it's not the trendy downtown area many young people crave. But I found great friends, a lovely place to live, and we drive 30 minutes into downtown if we really want to go out.

I didn’t jump to watch this one because well, I don’t feel much shame about anything. It’s really a testament to the company that even when I feel like I don’t “need” a TFD topic I get a LOT of value of it. I really appreciate the substance, there’s a lot of “fluff” out there.

Just tangentially related to No. 5, we need to talk about the judgment associated with moving to the liberal and expensive “enclaves” of cities. The wealth gap is very extreme, and the politics are far from perfect, but I’ve never felt happier than being in a city that actually has other minorities. I grew up in a town that was almost all white, and it is not someplace I would ever want to move again. Of course, demographics don’t change without some people moving places that make them feel uncomfortable at first, but there are reasons why people flock to cities, whether that perception is fair or not. I just think it’s important to consider that while other places in the country are more financially easy to live in, they are not always the easiest for non-white people to live in socially, at least at first. I wish I had a solution to this (why should only white people live in suburbs with backyards, after all?), but I thought it was worth bringing up.

I like your advice, but the "dream job" advice leaves out a whole other expectrum out. I work in a warehouse, and about 1/4 of those jobs are weekend mandatory, meaning they must choose a shift of working either Saturday or Sunday. During the holidays they make the whole weekend mandatory and one week day off. If you work hard, you have the choice to change to a department not with a better job, but with a shift from Monday to Saturday. And even then it doesn't pay for decent living conditions, many have to work 2 jobs in order to do so. I was talking with another co-worker that for us a "drea job" doesn't mean to even have a cubicle, but just to have a decent life where we don't have to worry about making ends meet and have the ability to actually be able to enjoy our time off in a meaningful way with our meaningful relationships.

it's kinda hard for me to even picture what I 'should' have saved until I'm 30. I'm in a very different, meaning european situation, and going to law school. If I were to start working next to my studies, I would likely finish university later in life. I don't know what the better option would be. Graduating earlier (and that will be... when I'm freaking 27 or 28) or not.

Number 6 I don’t feel guilty about. When I first started my career in my early 20s I would see guys save up almost every penny for retirement. They would not go on vacations or enjoy life. These people would retire at 65-67. One year later they would die. Or get cancer and have to burn through their savings. My coworker had 1M saved up and he built a dream home his last year with his job. He had a heart attack in the driveway the last month the house was being finished. My wife and I will have minimal retirement. But our house will be paid off.

I think the point about cities is a little out of touch. Often times living in a city is necessary based on your income because of the resources and social services that are accessible aren't readily available outside of the city. Things like government offices, cheaper grocery stores, grocery stores that are stocked with fresh produce, childcare, and the list goes on. I understand she's speaking from a "you want to live in this city because a preconsieved ideal of how your life looks" mentality, I just thought it was a relevant point as well if you've grown up in a city it's hard to realize what you may have a harder time accessing if you leave.

Individual choice can have a huge impact on enviroment: reducing to half or a quarter animal consumption and animal products would make insane difference in deforestation use of water use of food, etc. AND for most people it would be *far cheaper* thus, for most people this is not a choice of privelege, but even economical convenience. Not mentioning this was an oversight.

Okay that 70% of emissions come from 100 companies thing is pretty misleading. For example, some of the companies listed are exon and chevron. They are extracting the gas, but we are burning it, myself included. Are they responsible for having lobbied against public transit, alternative energy etc? Of c! But we cant wash our hands of it either. I otherwise agree, we need systemic change- just the way that stat is touted is a pet peeve.

I agree partially with #2, what bothers me a bit is that even though there is so much evidence and research we're still not at the point where the first thing that comes to mind is reducing meat and dairy consumption. It is by far the most impactful thing everyone does with the least effort, most of us eat 3 times a day, if you choose walking instead of driving a car you're not really doing anything net positive, if you're eating a hamburger to replace the calories you burned in walking. Sadly humans are not at all an efficient engine at all🤷‍♀️

Hi Chelsea. I wonder about your use of "dumb" when applied to 18-year-olds. Is it that they are dumb, or that they are making their way in the world and maybe don't have enough experience to make excellent choices? To me, the use of "dumb" is pretty judgement when applied to people who haven't even lived through two decades yet.
