When growing up in the 80s and early 90s we couldn't get enough of new digital functions from our Casios. Funny how - now that everything is digital - the mechanical wristwatch remains a stronghold of purely analogue technology and Casios seem to evoke nostalgia at least for a part of GenX and early GenY folks.
Casio has the right amount of digital functions. Enough to be useful and precise, but not to saturate your attention with silly features you'll never use.

Personally I think one of the best watches ever made is casio a158. It is easy to read, super lightweight, have the most needed functions and a comfortable bracelet. It is very reliable, they even write you cant break this module in any way. I heard that a railroad worker, who by the way later became a master watchmaker, had some casio watch running extremely precise, at several seconds a year, without any thermocompensation. Even the railway station itself checked time by his watch

I myself wasn't much of a Casio fan until i started watching your videos, but after some time i started to see the beauty and fun in these simple but righly rugged Casio watches. My collection right now have more Casios than any other. Watches like these are indeed very cheap and very basic but sometimes you just cant put price on the great memories they make... Last year i think i gifted one of my oldest friends, who's definitely not a watch guy, with a very simple but highly practic Casio F91-W for christmas on one of our last skateboard sessions before the holidays, and the way his eyes gleamed as he said "it was just the thing I needed, man!" was just priceless. Indeed, he was after a watch as a practical alternative to always having to get his phone for the time and I came just at the right time with the right piece. As always, thank you so much TGV for excellent videos like these, that shows that fun and passion are a fundamental part of this amazing hobby as searching for rarities and grails. The grail are the friends we make along the way, after all =P Happy Hollidays, TGV! Cheers!

Welcome back Hugo! I see he found a friend!! I was worried he had been captured during one of his escapades and turned into [gasp] luggage. The DW-290 is as close as you get to a G-Shock without being one, a much lower price; well worthy of being on your list. Its predecessor, the W-740-1VS, is an interesting piece, smaller and not quite a square, but not very round either, with a 1970's TV style look to them housing the same module. Just snagged one with the newer 3231 module, apparently quite uncommon. Very glad to see you included the AE-1200WH World Time. It is one of the most feature packed with an outstanding display layout and intuitive operation among their sub-$20 squares. The A158WA came as a surprise with its abysmal backlight. It's the F-91W in chrome plated livery with a folded link stainless steel bracelet. The very slightly larger (but not by much) A168WA would have been a better choice with its EL backlight, a quantum leap over A158WA backlight for a dollar or two more. The Duro is an interesting analog diver. It has a Miyota 2115 inside using a 377 1.55V Silver Oxide cell. That was a surprise upon opening the back. It is, in effect, a Citizen in Casio clothing, highly unusual for a company that makes its own countless movement modules by the many millions annually. If you open one to change the battery, which will happen more often with a 377 cell, you'll see a white plastic nylon (??) movement cover and spacer that provides shock protection. There are sapphire crystal mods, and from what I've seen popping the mineral one out and pressing in a sapphire replacement is a relatively simple process if you have a proper inexpensive press for it, although I'd want to research the water resistance a bit more to ensure that can be maintained. The DW-5600 became the overwhelming watch of choice for soldiers and marines, enlisted ones in particular, when it was released in 1987. Its price combined with being very nearly indestructible was invincible. It was the watch that went to Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and has remained the watch of choice since then. There were many videos on KZbin with soldiers and marines deployed to the Middle East severely abusing them in all manner ways during their down time, as a challenge to see how much one could withstand. Walter White's geekness with his Pontiac Aztek missing a hub cap and his science teacher attire down to his shoes, was punctuated by the CA-53W databank. Ask a Singapore man who has served their National Service since the early 1990's what their watch of choice is, and the nearly universal response is the F-91W. It is to the Singapore armed forces what the DW-5600 is to US soldiers and marines. If Kikuo Ibe is credited with creating the G-Shock, Ryusuke Moriai, the F-91W designer, should be credited with making them iconic as the primary G-Shock graphic designer. My two favorite Casio digital remain the 6-band radio sync solar GWM-5610 and GW-6900, both above the $50 threshold here, but directly related to the DW-5600, and a long discontinued J-50 Jogger (aka Running Man) bought new in 1982 with its extremely easy to use stopwatch and timer. While well outside the price ceiling here, my other favorite Casio is the analog Edifice EQS500DB which you've mentioned in at least one video a couple years ago (mine is on steel). It rivals a much more expensive Seiko Coutura solar world time chronograph I have. A review on the Edifice would be very good; it is an amazing value for all its features. An excellent discussion about all seven with superb information about their histories. Well done!

I used to use the F-91W as my sleeping watch so I could see the time easily when I wake up during the night. However, even though it has the green led backlight, it's still a struggle to see the time so I upgraded to the F-105. In recent years I've started to get some of the re-editions of the originals. Now as before they are still good honest reliable pieces, I even graduated to the G-SHOCK sub brand but the originals still hold a fond place in my memory when I was young when they were my single point of getting the time, reliably. The A-168 appeared in 1996, and its distinguishing feature from the A-158 is the EL electroluminescent panel. Timex launched EL in 1992, Casio had their "Illuminator" in 1994. These are two watches that stood the test of time, out of a sea of similar but different Casios. There was an A-150, A-151, A-152... A-160, A-161, A-163... The A line dates back to around 1980. That's what Casio does, they keep iterating on an idea, and if a watch resonates with people, they keep making it - in 10 different colors. Casio's been making dive watches since the mid 80's. They used ETA movements on some in fact. There were a bunch of resin watches, but also a handful of full steel options. Some were shrouded ala the Seiko Tuna, look at the MD-703 and MQD-3000W. The men's MD and ladies LD line began in the 80s, some were titanium, some were 300M of W.R. - of only a handful of 300M watches Casio has ever produced. Starting in the 90s, the MTD/LTD lines appeared, and the MDV line appeared in 2005. There are literally hundreds of watches among these lines. The Casio calculator lineup precedes the Databank, starting with the C-80 in 1980. They sold nearly 50 different calculator watches in the early 80s. Their distinguishing feature was that you could use them without a stylus. They had a feature called "FTS" or "Finger Touch System". If you press two buttons at the same time, the upper one is the one that registers. One of these calculators was the first Data Bank, the CD-40 / CD-401, released in 1984. What makes a data bank a data bank is the ability to store information, like phone numbers and scheduled events/appointments. That was an amazing feature through the 80s and into the 90s, replaced eventually by the PDA and the ubiquitous cell phone. Casio lumps the CA-53W together with databanks on their web page today for simplicity, but it's not really a Data Bank. Marty wears the CA-50 in BTTF, the CA-53W hadn't been released yet. The DW-5600E-1V is the full model name for the standard black model from 1996. "1V" is the color code, and it's safe to drop it if you're talking about all the watches as a whole.

i recently got the g-shock GW-M6510-1ER for work, and i love it. Not only because it can stand punishment to the end of time, but because it also looks cool too!

Actually the A158 and A168 are different watches. The latter is slightly larger and thicker and also has a better backlight. It also comes in the "regular" color, not just the gold. That is the A168 depicted at 8:20.

I can not get enough Casio videos. My favorite is the A158WEA-9CF. Silver with the gold face. It’s the perfect do it all watch on a budget in my opinion.

I own 5 Casios and my favourite and go to is the F91W. It was my first ever watch as a kid. My dad had one and got one for me, I never took it off. I own one now as an adult and it's my daily beater watch when I go to work.

I NATO'd my CA-53W and it's been my favorite beater/work watch for months now. The 20mm lugs are also a bonus for picking new straps.

Greetings from west yorkshire, just wanted to say i'm a newbie to watch collecting and this channel, but i have to say i am massive Casio fan, its what brought me here, i have everywatch in this video apart from the newer W-218H which i'm now going to have to buy because as a 34yr old man with large wrists i think its a must, the f91 has always seemed small on me but i loved it too much to not where it. i have a few actually in different colours. Anyway i'm so glad i found your channel, looking forward to watching the rest of your videos! stay safe.

Every watch channel has its ups and downs, but this kind of enthusiastic budget review from a guy who has owned some heavy hitters is why TGV was the first channel I subscribed to years ago and one of the reasons I keep watching.

Thank you Taylor, I have to admit, the more affordable watches are always those closer to my heart and tend to be more fun. I am honored by your support, thank you Taylor, it means a great deal, even after all these year. Onwards, upwards and stay safe! Best regards, TGV

I own the Casio World Time, Casio CA53W (both old and new versions) and the F-91W is being delivered tomorrow. I love the simplicity of these watches and love wearing them all the time. Might sound strange but they bring me more joy when wearing them than my Omega Seamaster.

Now, as a man who has a very young daughter (2) I don't have a huge amount of cash for my collection to be adding things like royal oaks or sea dwellers, so, for that very reason this show is the best on KZbin for those with a passion for time pieces but perhaps not the budget for the high end stuff. Tgv your passion for ALL watches not just the pateks and aps of this world is addictive and long may it reign. Regards, Glen

I love Casios. I have the blue Duro (a stunner on a bond NATO), the F-91W (reminds me of the 90's when I wore one daily), the DW 5600 (wear it often) and have a Casio Royale on the way. Looking forward to adding it to my Casio collection.

The Casio Royal on a steel bracelet is what I wear the most. Comfortable in the summer heat of Florida and great for travel. 10 year battery life. I work on both coasts and have family in the Midwest as well as Berlin. Great to keep up with everyone.
