Calle Cava Baja is a fantastic street for a tapas crawl in Madrid. It’s got about 50 tapas bars in just one street, and is in the heart of the famous La Latina neighbourhood. But with so many tapas bars, how can you pick the good from the bad? That’s where this video comes in? Yoly and I decided to hit 7 of our favourites.

1. Taberna La Concha: I love this spot for a pre-lunch vermouth. They make their own vermouth, and serve it with a few extra ingredients to give it extra kick. They always pair it with a delicious tapa. And their cooked tapas and wine list are also excellent. A great start!
2. Diaz y Larrouy: The wine bar has been around since 1992 and so is one of the grandfather’ of this street. They have 30-40 wines per glass, and serve delicious tostas. An excellent option for cava by the glass.
3. La Posada de la Villa: There has been a posada (or inn) here since 1642, and I adore hitting the bar in this old tavern. It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is a great place to grab a glass and even just enjoy the free tapa. It’s just full of history!
4. La Posada del Dragón: These guys do more modern tapas, and I love their tomato salad. But beyond the food, this place is extra special as beneath the glass floor you can see the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded Madrid.
Honourable mention: La Perejila - great little tapas bar that just didn’t make the final cut.
5. Casa Lucas: Famous on Calle Cava Baja. This place is always packed, but does delicious modern tapas and tostas, and they have an excellent wine list. Don’t worry if you can’t get a table - just squeeze on up at the bar!
6. Taberna Tempranillo: Another classic wine bar that’s been around for a number of years. These guys do an eclectic selection of modern dishes, as well as tostas. And of course great wine by the glass. Also - the wine rack against the back wall is spectacular!
7. Los Huevos de Lucio: Opposite is a famous restaurant called Casa Lucio. And in that restaurant they’re famous for their huevos estrellados (aka. Huevos rotos or broken eggs). Opposite Los Huevos de Lucio is their tavern, and you can get the same dish there. It’s simple, but it’s delicious!

Mi abuelo transportaba, con un carro y mulas, las uvas a Madrid. Tras vender las uvas en el mercado, los animales y él reponían fuerzas en alguna posada de la Cava Baja, antes de regresar al pueblo al día siguiente. Y eso mismo hacían muchos otros campesinos y ganaderos que llevaban sus mercancías a Madrid (fruta, carne, vestidos, etc). Una posada era un hotel tanto para personas como animales. En la posada, los viajeros encontraban comida y cama, y los animales encontraban agua, comida y reposo. La Cava Baja forma parte de la zona más antigua de Madrid. Enhorabuena por tu vídeo.

We followed your instructions today! I was with my 15 yo daughter but we loved the Rabo de toro at Casa Lucas! Also stopped for a wine at Posada del Dragon to take pictures of the historic wall! Went to Taberna La Concha and tried the Vermouth because of this Video. Honestly James described it spot on - "tastes like hope" my new favorite beverage. We stayed at a hotel on this street, Posada del Leon de Oro, and only then realized we'd seen it in this video, so we watched it again. On the Tuesday night we there, in the time of Covid, only the last of the recommended places was open, the Taberna de Lucio. Unlike the scene in this video we were the only diners and had complete attention from the staff. It was an astonishingly good meal, served with grace and humor, capped by our Tarte de Santiango dessert with sweet vermouth (Lustau San Emilio) sprinkled over it. We will come back to the hotel and reserve more time to sample these other bars and restaurants. A terrific experience !

We not only stayed on Cava Baja on our recent trip, our AirBnB is one of the flats where you saw the "hidden" medieval wall! We had NO idea! (But we did wonder why there was a tour group looking at it one morning...) We stumbled into Casa Lucas just before closing one night. No crowds! Amazing tostas. Wish you'd done this video before our trip because we missed a few places. Next time!

La Posada del Dragón was delicious and the tomato salad was the best! The waiter also told us, in addition to the ancient walls underneath, that this place used to make soap as well and they have a great dessert as a tribute to it (like a little soap bar made of white chocolate). Also, in the restroom is one of the original granite/marble tubs used way-back-when.

You are in for a treat. The tapas you get for free with your beer or wine in Almuñécar (and all of the Granada province) are the most generous in Spain. If possible, dont miss going to Granada capital city, its les than a two hour drive.

Once again...y’all have me drooling! Love Yoly’s eyes right after she takes a bite, you know if she likes it by the expression of her eyes first. Love those tomatoes. Here in the EEUU they’re called Heirloom Tomatoes and we pay a pretty penny for them compared to standard tomatoes, and ES uses them for everything. Love it!
