When I first got married we had terrible can opener problems. My wife worked in a kitchen so some of the recipes we made used the giant #10 cans, and they took their toll on even the "nice" can openers from the local target/walmart/etc. I broke down and bought the Fissler featured as #2 here, I made a video the day I got it, and another one last year about the thing, we've been using it going on near 5 years now and it still works as good as the day I got it. For manual can openers i prefer the soft-edge type because i find it easier to get the lid off the can. However, the can opener i usually use is an automatic one (normal type, not soft edge) with a built in magnet that causes the lid to stay behind when the can is removed. Another benefit of the soft-edge type is that the lid can be placed back on top of the can after it has been removed, which makes it ideal if you don't want to use the contents of the can all at once.

I have my smooth edge can opener from the dollar store (it was 2 bucks). I use it for about ten years now and it still works amazing. It's interesting that there are people out there that dislike smooth edge can openers over the regular ones. Like why would you want a sharp metal edge with cutting hazard and metal splints in your food if you could also decide to have a clean opened can? I don't understand.

Starfrit smoothe edge can opener I’ve been using it for 15+ years! Still works as if new. Easy too, though piercing the can is a bit hard but no problem.🙏🏻

Good thing you didn't get automatic can openers, because they have a nasty habit of leaving a razer sharp edge on the top.

mercsan117 Yes, but an electrical can opener requires energy during BOTH production and usage while the hand-crank ones do not.

Having lost the use of his right hand due to cancer, anything one handed is a great gift for my dad...especially after hearing it can be used left handed. That sucker is an instant buy for me.

FYI: you can take virtually ANY manual can opener and make them "edgeless" by turning them on their side so that the cutting blade is under the rim. No expensive fancy opener needed!

I just bought a Good Cooks brand can opener from Wal-Mart. I was so impressed with the performance that I bought one for a friend. It was $12.00, all metal construction, cuts smooth as butter, MADE IN THE USA! Great can opener for the $$$.

I have a black no-name brand smooth edge can opener I got for like $2 at Big Lots! They sell an equivalent version at BBnB for like $18! It's a bit finicky and takes some hand strength but works fine for me and doesn't need batteries or an outlet!

Thank you very much for demonstrating the can openers. What I'm really looking for is something that can fit on the keychain. Something that you can put in your pocket that's very small portable and that can open up cans. When you're in an emergency crunch.

before watching past the intro, the problem i have with can openers is that after some wear and tear they fail to wind, as in, the cogs wear down and the handle ends up spinning without and progression along the cutting edge. having said that, the best can opener i have ever had is a solid piece of metal that looks like a hook with a square on top of it. You pierce the lid with the hook piece and use the square piece to gain leverage on the hook and it cuts the lid from underneath, repeat. never fails, requires a small amount of movement over the winding type but is reliable and useful.

This is a very helpful video, I've found it hard to find a decent non-electric can opener recently. As a kid (in the early 2000's) I remember my mom got a swing-a-way(made in usa model) at a thrift store for $1 the thing lasted until recently, when I tried replacing it with a newer version of the same model, it was flimsy, and disintegrated within weeks of use.

Love Kitchenaid and OXO, personally. Have been disabled for 10 years, particularly my hands. FYI, What does the Dali Lama, Oprah, former President Obama and Einstein have in common? ALL LEFTIES! Look it up. As for what to do with the left overs? Cook, dingbat! 😎🤣 Cook what? Tuna casserole, of course! Add some onions, freshly ground pepper, cilantro, Oregano, Dill, a few bakers - just pop it in the oven... Mexican Style, silly! 🤗 👍🤣😎❤🤗✔
