Personally, whenever I'm digging for treasure, I do something similar to what you did with the pillars, except I just dig a hole at the four corners, and then connect them until I have a general outline.

I've definitely used that strategy too. Both work. I usually do the dig method if it's just me. If I'm playing with friends, I'll use the pillars that way they can see the border area too.

Easiest way I discovered was zoom in on the icon on the map and mark it with an x. Then go to location and walk until the x on the compass disappears. At that point dig down 3 blocks and then dig all surrounding dirt away as far as you can reach without moving. If done right you will always find the chest in that area. No need to buy the treasure hunter perk. Good luck

Yeah I tried explaining this frame method to the people on the server I played on but people didn't want to listen. Was funny listening to some of the players complain about how long it took them to find the chests. I personally think it's a waste of points to buy the perk to reduce the indicator range until such a time as you have basically purchased everything else, but that is just my take on it. When I last played it would take me about 2min to set up my 4 pillars + clear any tree/cars and then 30s-60s to clear down and loot the chest. Of course weaker tools or lower level tools/skills will add a little time.

Sometimes you just have to beat some sense into people, with a shovel. lol. I don't personally waste points in that perk anymore either. I did once, but realized it didn't really save much time and shorted me points I could put into not starving or getting dehydrated so fast. lol

My first found treasure chest was in the middle of a lake. AND you had to dig it out as well. And somehow I actually did it, after about an ingame day of diving down, digging a few blocks away, and coming back up. It had 200 dollars in it. Never bothered with another treasure chest until a (real) year later, when I found out they can contain actually good stuff.

lol. I had the same kind of experience. My first one was under a river. Nearly drowned trying to get it and it was worthless. I spent a lot of time on the forums in early versions pushing for better treasures and loot crates. All that work for something that I wouldn't even take the time to break down. Now they are useful :)

The chests will never be more than 3 blocks deep. Also, now, apparently if it spawns on water, it will be visible on the floor of the body of water.

im sure it was a glitch and idk even know if you will see this since you know your reply was 1 year ago but i had a chest that was actually embeded into bedrock. it went all the way down and was inside the bedrock so it took for ever to get to it but i was very determined. over 50 steel picaxes later i ended up excavating and entire area from top to bedrock just to find the chest and i finally found it. 25 paper and a level 5 pistol barrel, worth it.

Another strategy in finding the treasure is to position yourself so that the center of your player marker on the map is dead center with the treasure marker on the map then dig straight down about 3-4 cells. Afterwards, place a frame above you and upgrade it once if you have a mining helmet or other light source, otherwise leave it as the frame so light gets in. You want to do this to prevent wandering zombies and hordes from catching a visual of you while you are busy digging though they will definitely hear that depending on how close they are. So after doing those steps, once you have dug down 3-4 cells centered on the treasure marker, just dig at your maximum reach in a 360° radius until you find it but leave the top layer to serve as a roof of sorts to shield you from visual detection. There have been many times I have gone diggin' only to be surprised by a wandering horde who I dont notice until they are right behind me (it's even worse with the War of the Walkers mod). Ive found this to be a great way to prevent surprise spawns and ninja zombies from creeping up on you and also efficiently find those buried chests without ranks in Treasure Hunter.

Once I went treasure hunting, brought a lot of gas in a drum and blow up the whole place where the map says where the treasure is, didn't find it. Wonder if I accidentally destroy the treasure or I really have to dig?

yeah ahah you can destroy it. Ive done that once by digging around the area and making a huge cliff under the treasure somehow. Soon after, the entire cliff collapsed (almost on me) and it said mission failed and the treasure was gone

Is it possible that treasure is burried under a building? also do they despawn after a certain time. I got to the area and it was flashing red and then the icon dissappeared altogether.

I can't say it's impossible, but I've never seen it happen. I've seen them spawn under water and under roads (both are a pain to mine). As far as despawning, I haven't seen that happen unless we actually open it and it completes the challenge. Might be worth posting about it on the official forums, in case it is a bug.

If a treasure does spawn under a building, I wouldn't bother with it as It seems to always get destroyed by spawning inside the floor of the building

Mitcholio only way it disappears is if you accidentally destroyed it while digging. (i.e. By breaking it with tools, or accidentally removing the ground beneath it causing it to fall and break) the latter happens fairly easy. They're ALWAYS three blocks down. But you only need to remove two blocks above it to see it. So don't go any deeper than 3.

Spread them apart. Don't put them near your base. Make yourself a little shack on the hill a ways away from your base and let them run all the time over there away from your base.

Should also note that when you loot the chest that it will disappear when you exit it.. so be sure to loot it all, as well as be sure you loot the chest when you have the quest. If a friend who didn't have the quest loots it will tell you that you failed it

It's nice to have a video like this but you're making it messier and more tedious than it needs to be. *TL;DR:* The following is a cross section. Green represents digging effort, red represents blocks exposed. i.imgur.com/oCMNfaR.png Because of the way terrain works in this game, air pockets and chests below *AND* to the left or right of your trench will be exposed, and not just those below *OR* directly to the left or right. So if your chest is there, you will see it. *Long-post:* Every area is a square with corners pointing NE, NW, SE, and SW respectively. Pick a cardinal direction to dig a trench along, (into the pointy end of the terrain hole) and start on the second row from the edge row. Dig two blocks down along this trench and stop when you reach the area's edge. Exit your trench, and start a new one with a gap of two un-dug blocks between it and your last one. Repeat until treasure is exposed. It's usually been my experience that the chest is more often three blocks down than two, and almost never on center. I usually expose it in under three minutes of real-time digging, and sometimes in seconds. Don't waste your time clearing the surface. This pattern should avoid some of the trees that are actually hazardous if they fall on you. Tools to bring: iron shovel (soft blocks, faster and less stamina usage), steel shovel (hard blocks), steel pickaxe, minibike plus spare gas, extra tokens for the inevitable merchant visit.

Do you know any way around the TD5 error terrain rewrite issue? Where after game crash portions or all of the terrain reverts back to day 1 erasing most or all of you created stuff and chests? Just ran into this issue and I guess it's been going on for a while? Makes game unplayable now any idea?

treasure hunter perk is pointless, by the time you get enough maps and points to get the perk you should by that time not really need the treasure or you have an auger and it takes u about a minute to find it anyway, i never use the perk

One time I got a treasure chest under a road. I dug all around that thing, even dug down to making a mine in a circle...still couldn't find it, I finally just frustration quit cuz it was a big waste of time and it probably wasn't worth the effort anyway...mostly the same stuff you get in an A-Drop. lol

I've had that happen before too. Anytime that does happen, easiest way to get there is just to start digging on the ground around the road. go down a couple blocks, and then when you start tunneling under the road, it will cause it all to collapse and make it easier to get through.
