I sometimes accidentally roll the ball off of my fingertips when trying to set/overhead pass. How can I stop doing this?
@betteratbeachvolleyball4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking!!! Try this, it might be an easy visual. Make a diamond with your hands by touching your pointer fingers together and your thumbs. Now make all your finger tips touch and then push your hands out so that only your pointers and thumbs are together. This should kind of simulate your hand and wrist motions for sets except that diamond should spread and the ball should fall in that space between your hands/fingers. If the ball falls in that diamond space and you eject it using the diamond spreading motion from before, you should start getting better contacts.

They kind of brushed over some things. First in playing volleyball you need good footwork. When you are setting you need to get your entire body to the ball and the ball should be at your forehead slightly in front of you. If the ball is to your right, left, to far forward or back it will be a bad set. Like they mentioned you need to have you hands open, thumbs down but they are not together, you are making contact on the edges of the ball, if your hands are too close together it will be a bad set. Finally, if you are anything like me old and slow, unless you are in great position to set the ball correctly just do yourself a favor and bump set😊

Does number four also apply to indoor volleyball? I always thought I had to use my fingerprints to set a ball but I rather should slightly touch the ball with my index fingers?
@betteratbeachvolleyball4 жыл бұрын
DEFINITELY still use your finger pads for both sports. Using the finger PRINTS as you say is very necessary but in beach because we can slow the ball down a little bit more so the ball sits deeper in the hands. ONE key that CAN help is allowing it to just brush the second segment of your index finger WITH the fingerprints still on the ball. I hope that helps

Can leaning back still be good though? Like faking a back set but you’re actually setting forward?
@betteratbeachvolleyball4 жыл бұрын
There isn't as much trickery right now on the beach but it's moving that way. Deception comes more from looking the same way every time and having the ability to do all things from the same position. Best to master the basics than focus on "trick" plays. That's our vote. But play your game and find what works for you!!

I keep doing the lean back when I set. Watching you set I'm starting to think it's because I was taught to try and receive the ball at my forehead, whereas watching you if you don't catch it you'd receive it at your jaw, but more importantly in front of you. I'm keen to try and reposition to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't, any suggestions?

How much rotation is allowed after the ball is released?
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
Rotation actually does not matter! A double is based on whether the ball was contacted with both hands simultaneously, or one hand first and then the other. There is nothing about spin in the rule book - you have to actually see one hand contact the ball before the other hand to call it.

But a more serious question with how ur hands finish, u spoke to not do the rabbit hands and some other limp wrist hands when u set... u mentioned to finish same and similar to how u receive with hamburger hands. Now I started with indoor and being coached by females, so it was all about the Hershey kiss receive and the superman finish (wrists extended out, like superman).... does a person just need to work on wrist strength/mobility and practice to get that strength without extending into the superman hands?
@florianw.5604 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! One question: Do those rules also apply indoor, or is it a different kind of setting?
@betteratbeachvolleyball4 жыл бұрын
The answer to that question might be a little diverse. The current state of indoor calls for very fast releases so that the defense is always playing catch up.The hand pocket for the ball should not be so deep in indoor and the "catch" position should be higher on hardcourt or 6's. Crab Hands, Slapping, Balloon Catcher, Dainty Lady, Rockaway all apply... The peekaboo (very fast contact) has its place in indoor but you still wouldnt pull them out fast... Lastly hands in indoor CAN be a little bit more stone like but the wrist flex still needs to be available for quality setters

@@riancarl5239 here's a great trip that coaches will love you for if you can a0ly it. Usually we have a comfort zone and when we make changes to skills we push the needle just a tiny but but it still stays within our minds representation of how the skill should be. If our coach is changing us, they clearly SEE we aren't doing it. So when you are making a change or a coach tells you to try something different. Go as far as you can to the end of the spectrum that he or she is talking about. Make a HUGE change. It stops the coach from having to repeat the same thing over and over and it'll push you outside the zone that you are in. When making changes. MAKE HUGE CHANGES and then see if someone tells you you've gone to far.

@betteratbeachvolleyball4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Jamie! While every catch and release is slightly different, in our opinion there is room for slight modifications based on where you need to set, how far and how fast. So you might see the fingers falling forward or slightly out, but the main point of #1 is not promoting a motion of ONLY FLEXION AND EXTENSION of the wrist. If you make an L with your thumb and index finger, imagine flexing your rest into the "corner" of the L. The finish of that motion is barely half an inch of difference but the direction of the wrist flex will play a huge role in your success.

I'd once heard that you should pretend like you're going for a soccer header. As in you should line yourself up such that the ball would land on your forehead if you didn't touch it with your hands.
