Glad this popped up as a suggested video. I've been looking at kayaks online and there are so many on the market these days that it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the specifications and options. I'm 6'1"/265 and my balance isn't what it used to be, so I need a kayak like one of these.

Great video to help direct bigger guys/gals to different options that they might not be aware of. I’m 6’2” 395 and have a 2019 Jackson BigRig (not the hd/fd) that I absolutely love. I know they quit making these, but they can be found used sometimes and are a super stable and shallow drafting kayak. 😉

My personal favourite is the Ocean Kayak Prowler 4.7(New Zealand model) Ocean Kayak Trident 15(US model). Did a number of capsize drill in open water and found the kayak to be the easiest to turn it upright and climb onboard. My main priority in buying a kayak.

The Native Titan makes great kayaks. The 13.5 , I think has 550 weight limit.. But you are way under that. He didn't do the Titan justice. It has additional foam inserted into the hull to ensure it doesn't sink..The turn radius on the Titan is remarkable!! Native customer service is "HORRIBLE"

Ive been looking at Kayaks lately. I really like the Hobie Pro Angler. The price is higher but the benefits are pretty amazing. Watching Kristine Fischher stand on ghe bow is pretty reassuring. Recently i lost over 100 lbs due to an illness and since i like being lighter im staying at 230 or less. I dont know why anyone would walk awayb from thhe Mirage 180 drive when it can be replaced by any other pedal drive or the Mirage 360 which to me, is simply amazing! Im no Spring chicken so having the choice of drives is implortant. Can you talk about electric motors as well? Thanks for this video, it was very helpful!

The Nucanoe Unlimited is 41" wide and rated at 650 lbs. Stable and can be fully customized to each anglers needs. Something to consider when looking at a kayak is the true weight capacity. If The dry weight of the kayak is 100 lbs. and the weight capacity is 450 lbs. you then deduct the weight of the kayak (100 lbs.) from the 450 lb. capacity. Then the true weight capacity of this kayak is then 350 lbs. This 350 lbs. would include the individual and all the gear loaded on the kayak.
@BeardedDadFishing
@BeardedDadFishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Ken. I’ll be including the Nucanoe on the updated video next year for sure. And thanks for mentioning the weight capacity. Something I totally forgot to mention and does go overlooked.

You may not be aware of this, but I’ve confirmed with NuCanoe that the 650 lb. weight capacity of the Unlimited is for persons and gear. The weight of the kayak is NOT part of that for NuCanoe. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I have a Hobie Revolution 13 and I have kitted it out with rails etc for fishing. It is pretty stable and I like that Hobie provides wheels for moving it from from the truck to the water. I'm also looking at the Hobie Outback for another option. It would be nice to stand up on a kayak. The Outback has a wider deck. I like having a fish finder so the Pro Angler would be nice (Expensive)

I'm 6'2" / 235 running the Jackson Big Rig FD. I got it just as they discontinued it to make the Knarr. Spent a 3 day weekend camping and fishing on Norris Lake in TN. It was awesome, and I was not tired at all using my pedal drive to cover some serious miles. It's a bit much to run in a lake, which I did and had trouble traversing the shallows where everyone had to get out and drag, but that 140lb beast ain't no joke. So I bought the pod to change it into a pedal only yak by removing the drive and mount hole, which will also open up the deck some and remove some weight (haven't tried it out yet). I love it, but wish I had waited a couple more months for that Knarr to come out. Problem is I have heard that the Knarr is not as stable for big men.

I'm 240 lbs and have a big fish 120 upgraded to a pod mount bixpy, plus I use outriggers from either yakgadget or yakgear but the outriggers increased the stability by at least 30% and added a bit more boincey and I absolutely love it, I have a buddy that has a hobie pa 12 and he took my big fish out for a spin and said that it was alot more stable than his pa 12 with the outriggers deployed but about the same without the outriggers deployed, but either way you cant really go wrong with a big fish 120, its weight capacity is 400lbs, but just from my experience if a person was over 250 lbs then I would go with one of the bigger/ more weight capacity kayaks, but if a person is 245 or so you would be fine

I purchased the Hobie PA14 360 back in July. This was be best decision for me. One item that needs to be talked about is the seat and how adjustable it is. Its hight from the deck, Adjustable seat by turning the handle on the arm rest, adjusting the back also by adjusting the handle on the opposite side arm rest, it also has a knob on the back to for lumbar support. The space below the seat I can fit 6 3700 plano tackle boxes, But I use that space for all my plastics. Bow mount a trolling motor (motor guide xi3 36" shaft) power pole in the back... The only issue I have with it is that the guardian transducer mount is made for Lowrance transducers. I installed hummingbird with side scan - so some mods had to happen. Would love to see Hobie offer options for the electronics WE the customer are installing. if I had to do it all over again, Hobie it is. This thing is the most stable thing I've been on. The secondary stability is second to none.

@@fullnelson3028 Hello, I am 5' 10" 260. My thoughts. First what kind of waters do you fish? The PA 12 is 12' per specs, the PA 14 is 13' 8". PA 12 capacity 500 lb, PA 14 600 lb with just 1'8" extra length. The extra 100 lb helps if you want to rig it out with a trolling motor. The reason I have the 14 is the width is 38" not 36" like the 12. Big boys need big boats. lol I did it for stability. Just 2" in beam translates into stability. Also the PA 12 has 4 rod holders molded into the bow and the 14 has 6. With rod socks you can store 12. it helps big in low areas and you need to reduce your hight. If you have any other questions please reach out.

@@fullnelson3028 I have no issues. I am 57 I have Boondox landing gear and also trailer. I have no issues, I pulled this up boat ramps fully loaded with the landing gear. Its a journey, just enjoy it. a 12 or 14 you will be happy. I landed on the 360 drive. Best for my type of fishing. Beats using a paddle to adjust in tight areas.

I'm looking to get my first kayak and I'm having a really hard time with deciding what to get. I definitely like to be out for hours and not sure if I should get a pedal kayak or build one up with a trolling motor. I liked the more open decks without peddles bc I like to stand however the pile of accessories to get one that don't come with one can get expensive. Any suggestions? I have nearly an 1800-2000$ budget

A really good review, Bearded Dad. I wanted to add that the weight capacities of most kayaks are really arbitrary, almost made up numbers. I doubt many are lab/field tested. How one can know? You'll often find two kayaks with the same general width and length stats . . . and they'll claim considerably different stated max capacities. I should add that width (length too for the total footprint) is a big deal for large guys where even a few inches of width can alter a kayak from feeling very tippy to rock solid.
@BeardedDadFishing
@BeardedDadFishing Жыл бұрын
Great feedback! I sure hope they do some field testing, but it would be great to find out. I have been surprised at similarly sized kayaks with different capacity, but also know that the hull design itself (double u, trimaran, v) has an impact on stability and speed. Thanks again for the food for thought!
@thurstonhowell9782
@thurstonhowell9782 Жыл бұрын
On the cheaper ones this is probably more true. I used to have a Lifetime Tamarack 10 ft that I got for $199. Weight capacity was 275 pounds but I was about 270 myself. Loaded it down many times with myself, a full cooler with about 20 drinks for the wife and I, fishing gear, lunch, and a cast net. Probably an extra 50 pounds of gear at least in total. Took it across the intracoastal on a windy day and didn’t have any concerns about it. On the other hand I’ve been in an Ascend FS10 with less gear and it was way less stable.
@bradreid6057
@bradreid6057 Жыл бұрын
@@thurstonhowell9782 Right. But, stability is a totally different issue. Weight capacity is simply how much water is displaced by a kayak as it is "pressed" into the water by its load. This is why one can still find large concrete barges around that float really well. Things float when they weigh less than the water they displace. * Back to stability for a last comment and an abstraction: you could have a 12 inch wide kayak that is 40 feet long and it'd have quite a lot of "capacity" and really, really, lousy stability. Shape matters.

I've been planning a Native Watercraft purchase for this year. Haven't quite decided what model because I'm not 100% sure how I plan to transport right now. But the amount of serious weather I've seen guys fishing out of them makes me crazy happy with the stability that Native claims. I've seen enough "our kayaks are the most stable" claims only to catch people on youtube dumping them in light chop to dissuade me from believing manufacturers. But Native certainly has some serious game in the crazy stable category.

I'd toss in the Crescent Crew (600lbs) and the Vibe SeaGhost 130 (550lbs); Crew capacity is 600 lbs less the weight, ~80 lbs, gives you roughly 520 lbs theoretical capacity. 75% of 520 is 390 lbs working capacity. So with the Crew in single seat mode you'd have around 390 lbs of person & gear and the yak should handle well and stay dry with open scuppers. The Ghost would give you 550-92 (fully loaded) * .75 = 343 lbs for gear and paddler. This is the way. I see some shoutouts for NuCanoe... I'd like to try one.

You needed to add one more kayak to your group! The Hobie “Outback, “! It is a great kayak, 85 lbs without drive and seat! It has octagonal bar which you can put 3 fishing poles horizontally! Per side! But one of the 12’ 9” kayak best features is kick up fins, you can hit a the rock or log, and the fins disengage until you are over the object, once over the rock you pedal normally and the pedals engage again! The other kayaks don’t do this as well! These same fins can go in very shallow water by feathering the pedals or short stroking the pedal up very near the hull! All the kayaks you listed are very good, but my first choice would be hobie!

One thing you didn't mention regarding the weight capacity (at least with Hobie and I'm sure the others) is that the kayak has an overall weight capacity and the chair has a lower capacity. For instance, the Hobie Pro Angler 14 360 (which is what I have) has an overall weight capacity of 600 lbs but the seat maximum is 350 lbs. Other Hobies like the Outback have a 275 lb limit for the seat.

I have a PA14 with the 180 drive and mainly fish inshore - brackish creek, salt water impoundments, etc. I really don't need the 360 features and actually very rarely use the reverse. The PA14 with the 180 drive will save you $1,000 off the price of the 360. But that said, I started in paddle kayaks and once you start pedaling, you will never paddle again. Hobie are the best for a reason. They stand behind their product, the workmanship and quality is excellent and they hold their value. I have been kayak fishing for 17 years and have not capsized (unintentionally) yet. Knock on wood. The PA14 is stable enough to stand and fish easily. I'm not 260#, only 210 - but I'm 66 years old, balance ain't what it used to be.... If you are a big guy and want to fish, skip the research and go buy the PA-14. You will not regret it.
