There are several, including classic-era Phantasy Star. But if I had to pick one forgotten gem that I still fondly remember my play experience with, one that comes to mind is Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side on Sega CD. Some may be familiar with the original game on the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive. Now take that same game, tack on some additional characters, give it a better kick-ass soundtrack, and REALLY up the violence. How creative this game got with its fatality cinematics would have made Genesis-era Mortal Kombat swoon.

Honestly, I feel like my late 20's is when I really started to be able to play games well... I've played them since I was a toddler but for a long time I would just play the first half and then give up in most of them lol

I had that terrible Dinosaurs GBA game that was a movie tie-in and had that exact thought a LOT. But I found out a few years ago that no, it’s just a terrible game with awful controls and is pretty broken and buggy. Lmao.

And at some point it turned into "maybe I'm too old to play this game"… ;-)

There's no golden age, either you feel to young because of a perceived lack of intelligence/understanding or you feel too old because your eyesight and reflexes are starting to dip. As well there's not a between zone, because it's a sliding scale for both that's unique to everyone. Puzzles in action games are probably a nightmare for designers due to this.

The perceived complexity of tasks dissipates as you get older ie more experienced, more intelligent, more jaded. I remember thinking DK64 was really big and complex, today I see it’s actually pretty simple. I used to think Legendary difficulty on Halo was near-impossible, but as a patient, thoughtful, coordinated adult, it’s a relatively easy challenge, as far as Halo goes.

I was thinking the whole time about the jontron episode where he played that same game. Dressed up and suddenly Ken wants to do something else, the whole time that 1 hour never comes and barbie is just eternally talking to nobody on the phone preparing for a date that will never come, repressing the memory of how he died in a car crash on the way to pick her up and now she drives herself instead. Or she killed him and took his car. Painted it in nail polish and what's left of him is inside her fridge that I don't think you ever see open. Google that.

I played the emulator last year and it crashed everytime the screen did the warp and black n white screen, when you lose you powers/ get caught. So glad it's on steam!

Nothing wrong with that. Some of the fondest memories I have regarding video games involve playing with my brother. I'm sure a major part of the fondness was because of it. Especially figuring things out or making decisions together (shout out : Kings Quest, Space Quest, Pools of Radiance, NES Zelda). I even bought a copy of the old Kings Quest games and my brother and I sat with his son and played it with him. :)

My sister and I used to play free to play games online but they were always in Japanese so we'd sit there and try everything and take notes together as we'd try and figure out how the games worked and this could go on for weeks of trial and error until we could actually play the game properly

Back when we were kids, we were playing Ice Cream Mountain and my dad was so tired of us playing video games all day that summer, he just said, "Screw it, you guys wanna go play actual mini golf? We can get ice cream after." Rugrats was the real MVP, man.

I remember playing a lot this game called "Lego Island 2". It was basically the story of this Lego guy who lived on an island and worked at his parents' pizzeria. One day, some bad guy came and destroyed all the houses on the island, and spread all the bricks across different dimensions, and unleashed random robots. He also kidnapped the pizza guy's parents because,... why not? So the pizza guy has to go in these dimensions with dinosaurs and deserts and stuff to find the bricks. The final stage was on the planet Ogel, where there was the bad guy's lair and the parents were held prisoners. You defeated him, and then everything gets back to normal. Saying it out loud sound even crazier that it was, but I remember it being a lot of fun. It had a good gameplay, some very entertaining sidequests (except the one where you had to fish at an oasis, that one was extremely tedious), and a lot of satisfying little details: for example, your could throw infinite pizzas at people and change some elements of the background just by pressing a button. The only big downside was that the loading times took absolutely AGES. But it was worth it.

I think one of my favorites was the I Spy Treasure Hunt on Dos. It was pretty chill, you’d explore this town with pirate history, find hidden objects to earn map pieces to lead you to treasure. It was a lot harder than more recent hidden object games, not only were some objects tiny, but there were absolutely no hints. Still loved it anyway and I recently managed to snap it up, lovely nostalgia trip

Cousin had this and I'd play every time I visited him. It was one of the final games released for the PS1 which was the reason it fared so poorly. Allowing the user to strengthen their abilities by nailing timing of their ults was a new concept to me, and I never completed it but we did make it to the final disc.

Quackshot was definitely a large part of my childhood! Another Megadrive favourite was ‘Haunting’ where you play as a poltergeist trying to scare a family out of several houses by possessing various objects in the rooms and there were entertaining animations when the family members encountered the haunted areas. But the two mid-90s games I never hear mentioned, yet long to be remade, are Little Big Adventure 1&2.

Dino Crisis! That game was great, PS1 era puzzle solver, 3D models and fixed camera, Dinosaurs, very limited ammo, and they could chase you from room to room, smashing through furniture and breaking windows! Those events were conditionally scripted, of course, but it was mind blowing for the time. Fights were expensive on your precious ammo, so you tried to find clever ways to improvise, avoiding fights, crawling through ducts, making poison and sleep darts out of medical supplies. It also had modable weapons with multiple ammo types. You also didn't have a health bar, (I guess it was hidden) but if you were hurt your aim and running were affected and you could bleed, and if you couldn't find actual healing items you could use painkillers to temporarily cover up the wound effects. A think a lot of it was cloned from Resident Evil, but I didn't have RE, I had Dino Crisis, and it was great. It got a GreyStation sequel that was much more of a run and gun horde game, with a lot less puzzle solving. It was ok, but very different from what made the first game great. It had another sequel on PS2 which unfortunately was terrible and killed the franchise.

Disney's Tarzan on PS1, that was stupendous. I was just a wee little lad, and it was my 1st ever game on PS1. I always forget about it, but 2 levels seared into my brain - when you play as Terk and Level on the boat.

For me it's "No One Lives Forever". It was a humorous take on British spy films complete with all the wacky spy gadgets and over the top villains. Also when you would sneak up on enemy henchmen, they'd be having random conversations like how they joined H.A.R.M. because it had the best dental plan.

I've been saying it for years, NOLF and NOLF 2 have *the* best NPC dialogue, like winding up a co-worker by telling him the Superspy is a 14 year old in a bath-towel because he missed the morning briefing, the problems of hanging art on orange painted walls or why someone likes Edith Piaf, to the problems of making artificial lava either look realistic or cool, why a very minor criminal organisation gets so much press because they have a Sci-fi gothic castle as a lair or the difficulties of promotion when you've been turned into a cube by your boss. Plus the music was totally on point, the humour was great _and_ a strong female protagonist. Kate Archer deserves to be as well known as Lara Croft, but alas, 'tis not the case. Plus we never did find out what H.A.R. M. stood for...

The Saboteur. I used to adore that game. It was essentially a GTA-style open world game, only it was set in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War 2. Your goal was to help liberate the city from them. It had a beautifully atmospheric style to it, where the Nazi controlled parts of town were all in black and white, except for the harsh, bright red of the Nazi symbols. It felt moody and oppressive, and felt like you were in an old film-noir movie. You had to disrupt the Nazis hold on each district by destroying their outposts, tanks and fortifications etc dotted all across town. When you had done enough in that district to free it, all the colour would return to that part of the city, and it became a vibrant place again. As you progressed through the game, more and more of the city would become colour, where the still-oppressed areas would be in black and white. It was really cool and gave the city a really interesting vibe. I still remember passing through a Nazi checkpoint with fake papers to enter a Nazi-controlled area and it all suddenly going dark and bleak and smokey. Very atmospheric! There were loads of other cool touches too like all the old cars and tanks you could collect and the period-correct music they played, old school circuit racing, free-running and climbing mechanics so you could take to the rooftops, hell, you could actually climb the Eiffel Tower and, if you were brave enough, you could jump off the top into a tiny lake below that would break your fall. You even got to drive to a small part of Germany (and possibly Holland too I think?) Also, the edges of the map were "No Mans Land", where the 'actual' war was happening, so if you went too far outside the boundaries of the map you'd get mowed down by Spitfires or landmines. It was a cool way of not having invisible walls. Sadly I think this game was rushed out the door as the developer behind it was going out of business, and in some ways, it showed. It seemed like they were going to put a lot more stuff in it, and probably DLCs too, but they couldn't as the company went under. It was still an awesome game though, but sadly, one we might never see a sequel to.

It was made by Pandemic, and they didn’t go under, EA bought them and shut them down. Yet another reason to despise EA. But yes, a very fun game with not nearly enough recognition.

Peter Badger The Saboteur was a ton of fun! It was like GTA, but it cut out all the extra fluff in favor of bombastic action, beautiful environments, solid missions, etc. If you Liked The Saboteur, you should try Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. It was made by the same company was like a predecessor The Saboteur. It takes place in North Korea and you play as one of three Mercenaries that are tasked with taking down the dictator’s war machine or “deck of 52”, which are 52 bounties starting from the bottom and working your way all the way up to the Ace of Spades himself. There’s a plethora of weapons to choose from, vehicles like humvees, tanks, helicopters, but the best part of the whole game is ordering up an air strike from the Russian black market and raining artillery down on your enemies. The game plays similar to the Saboteur and you get more money by taking in bounties alive and it’s backwards compatible on Xbox One and PS3 and probably dirt cheap these days, so check it out. I played it last summer and it’s still a crazy fun time! The Sequel really expands on the first game, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve played it and I can’t tell you if it holds up today, but when I played it back in 2008, I thought it was the coolest game. There was DLC where you can play as Barack Obama and Sarah Palin.

There's one game I never see mentioned anywhere - not on lists or 'games you've never heard of' or retro reviews or anything and that's Jet Force Gemini. It was an amazing sci-fi shooter. You had the option of playing between 3 characters (one of which was a dog in a tank that could also fly) and you had to save these aliens (who looked like Ewoks if Ewoks were koala bears) from this army of bug-aliens. You could replay different levels because different characters could access different things due to each one having a unique ability (like the dog being able to fly), and there were multiple missions, and the boss fights really slapped. Plus it had a killer theme song. And I'm pretty sure it was made by Rare. Yet no one I ever speak to has ever heard of it or played it and if it wasn't for the fact that I still own the cartridge in it's the original box I'd start to think I imagined the whole thing -_-

Hoooly carp, I had *completely* forgotten about Creatures, but my youngest two brothers and I used to play it together when we were kids! We had so much trouble with the Grendels. We tried to put them on the higher levels to keep them out of the way of our Norns, but they would just jump down again. Then we would start shouting "Death from above!" whenever that happened.

This game is a game that I recently discovered, but it's old and good. Sam and Max Hit The Road. It's a point and click adventure game in the style of Secret of Monkey Island. It was really zany like the show, but it was very slightly more mature. For example: There's a pool of blood in the streets. My favorite quotes from the game are: "Look at the cute kitty, Sam! Let's skin it and turn it into a tennis racket!" and "I'm going inside to see if anyone wants to off themselves for the greater good!". Also, they even referenced The Secret Of Monkey Island! There was a part where a guy corners you and one of the dialogue options was "Look behind you, a three headed monkey!".

One that a not a lot of people know about is Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle). They had building towns and building up of weapons long before it became popular in other games. Dark Cloud 2 is my Favorite game of all time.

The funniest part of Dark Cloud was the people telling you where to put their buildings. Like, "I guess if you're going to magically rebuild my business, just don't put it somewhere noisy." Their entire village was wiped off the map, and now that a hero's shown up to help recover it, all they care about is not being rebuilt next to annoying neighbors.

[Caution: VERY LONG] MySims Agents for the wii. Does anyone remember the MySims series? They were a subseries of the sims, except for kids, and not at all the sims. Every game had a different focus. MySims Racing (another good one(at least the wii version was great)) was a racing game, there was a planes one, there was a whole bunch of them. And every game has the same characters, which I liked for some reason. But anyways, MySims AGENTS. This one was about secret agents and detectives and stuff, which I LOVE. You got a whole bunch of gadgets and stuff to solve puzzles, there were little puzzle mini games that I didn’t like as much but were fun all the same, it was great. And you could decorate your secret agent headquarters with different wallpapers and different characters that would hang around on the different floors, and adding little things to interact with, unlocking the characters and items the more you played. You could also customize your character, although I mainly just made a character at the beginning and stuck with it the whole time I played anytime I started a new run. And there was an actually good story to it as well, like if I look back on it now it still holds up. As far as graphics go, it was early to late 2000s, so they weren’t the best, but since they were for kids they made the graphics blocky and cartoony on purpose, making that not as obviously bad. If you watch game grumps, I had a relationship with this game like Dan Avidan did with the Sierra games when he was a kid. It fucking ruled, and I think I still have my copy, so I’m gonna see if I am get that up and going, since talking about it made me want to. If I can’t, I will be sad and shall blame OXtra.

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen is one for me. It's a superb and unique strategy game on the snes where you command an army that's separated into a bunch of individual jrpg-like parties. It got a sequel on the n64 but after that they turned the franchise into yet another tile based strategy game and no one ever remembers Ogre Battle!

How about Jade Empire - the Bioware game that time forgot. Aside from being an epic story driven rpg in what is essentially ancient china with magic and a martial arts combat system. This is a game which had John Cleese in digital form (and made it work (sorry Fable 3)). It also allowed you to have same sex relationships AND a three-way before they made Dragon Age. And, best of all, it's on the backwards compatible list so you can all go and remember it now!

Honestly, Project Eden sounds really fun! I love older games, and especially dystopian ones. Like Under a Steel Sky (I think that’s the name of the original one, not the new one?), HL1, and System Shock (GOD IT’S A FUN GAME, even if the original came out before FPS controls were sort of standardized, and as a result you have to really mess with the settings to get it right).

I remember both of those, and agree on Lost in Time being really hard in places, getting bashed around by Marvin the Martian, or into car chases with the off brand prohibition era gangsters. Some of the animation was really good, though; watching bugs skate across ice was how I worked out how to. The medieval level with the magic tiles you can spring off, and the sort of pirate level that somehow centre on compass points, spring to mind as being good too. I enjoyed Time Busters too; I think that was probably the better of the two, though the co-op angle was really cool and new to me. My older brother was always Taz.

I remember one of the best games of the Nintendo 64 that nobody remembers: Silicon Valley. In this game, you are the chip of a robot that got wrecked in the intro movie and now you have to possess the bodies of robotic animals in a scientist planet that was overrun by said robotic animals (you see the corpses of the scientists laying around). It was really really fun, and the controls were very smooth. I remember telling about this game's story during a judo competition from school, when we were sitting on the tatami mat, waiting for our turn, and I could not remember the name of the game and people didn't believe me as the idea was too surreal and the dialog too funny.

The PC MMO game FusionFall from Cartoon Network. Playing this as a kid was amazing! It had EVERY Cartoon Network character you loved, and it was an online game where you ran around as your own custom character talking to famous cartoon characters and fighting enemies. It was like World of Warcraft, but for kids. Playing this during the golden age of Cartoon Network was absolutely magical. You had Ed, Edd n Eddy, Powerpuff Girls, Codename: Kids Next Door, Ben 10, Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and Courage the Cowardly Dog, just to name a few. And the art style was adorable to boot. For as cool as it all was, no one ever talks about it. Too bad the servers shut down (it was pretty short lived, too) a while back, otherwise I would play it again to get an adult perspective on it.

I'll throw my hat in the ring by saying that Darkwatch on PS2 will always hold a special place in my soul. It was this cowboy, horror, vampire action-adventure game that, to me, felt so unique and ahead of its time. A few features I remember off the top of my head are fun yet challenging bosses, variable endings depending on your morality throughout the story, co-op play, a plethora of unlockable skills which allowed for multiple playstyles, and an overall tone between story and settings that constantly had me on the edge of my seat. The only lasting downfall is that my brain is now forever coded to go into panic mode for a second every time I hear a train whistle...

I have a few forgotten games that I really loved: Home Alone for DOS, where you had to set traps and lead the enemies into them. Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, which was an awesome mech suit game. Then there's Metal Fatigue, one of favourite RTS games back in the day. And now I just found out it's on steam.

Only ever played the Home Alone 2 tie in on NES, not the original alas. Terra Nova was impressive for its time, I played a lot more of it than I did System Shock which was also from the same team. Also on Steam now thanks to Nightdive. It and Heavy Gear were definitely unfairly overshadowed by the competition since they did things no one else did. Shogo: Mobile Armor Division as well though, MW was king in the 90s. Metal Fatigue took me way too long to get working when I first got hold of it.

One game I have never heard of anyone but me playing is Egypt 3 a.k.a The Egyptian Prophecy: The Fate of Ramses, it is a point and click puzzle game where you are trying to help make sure an obelisk is built so Ramses can live longer. The main character Maya is a magician who uses various spells to assist her and she meets various members of the Egyptian pantheon. I quite enjoyed the game, even though it hardly works on PC since it came out back in 2004. Another obscure game is Enclave, it is rather strange RPG where as you go through the campaign you unlock new classes and weapons, and you customize your loadout based on the gold you have earned from finding them in levels and doing special side missions. After the main campaign you get the option of doing the same missions again but as the monsters and you fight the humans, dwarves, elves and stone golems. Overall the game was fun, it came out in 2002 for Xbox and PC.

Bushido blade, one of my favorite fighting games from my childhood on the ps1. You play as a disciple of this group before the character you picked realizes it's being lead by an evil and dishonorable figure. You battle the rest of your colleagues in honorable combat, trying first to convince them of the truth, before striking them down. You actually can't get to the real ending if you dont fight your compatriots honorably, which is really neat considering this was ps1. The hp was hidden and varied between the fighters limbs, so you could disarm your opponent, or force them to crawl by damaging them enough. Headshots were basically instant death but also usually dishonorable due to the fact that most of the weapons required your opponent to be prone in order to crush their skull. I always remember the one character later on with a gun because yes. Someone you fight later on has a gun. That fight is so tense even though it's over like, pretty quickly either way.

I played this at my friend's house, and really all I remember was in one stage you could cut down the bamboo trees. I was like, 6, but for some reason that sticks out in my memory

Bushido blade was amazing and tense because most fights ended in one or two hits but I really enjoyed bushido blade 2. Would love to have a copy of it. The gameplay is basically just like hellish quart

Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES! Still own it and play it, along with my collection of Super Mario games, Donkey Kong Country, Aladdin, etc.. my daughter LOVES playing the games with me that I played at her age.. awesome nostalgia and bonding

Is it the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring? I think it came out somewhere around that time, at least. You had to sneak out of Hobbiton and avoid the Ringwraiths? My best friend and I ran straight into one of them and I screamed so loudly I scared not only my friend, but her sister and father who were also in the room. And the game was based on the book, rather than the movie, so it included the whole Old Forest and the Barrow Downs and all? Or am I thinking of something completely different?

@@TheGuardingDark I think she's talking about The Hobbit for Gamecube. You ran around as Bilbo collecting silver pennies and beating wolves with a stick! I remember that game being one of the first adventure-rpgs I ever played (Late to the Party theme plays)!

I remember that game. It was the LOTR 1 game. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_The_Fellowship_of_the_Ring_(video_game) I remember beating the game eventually, but that Shire section was hard. I had to sit in a field for a while watching the nazgul moving around for hours to figure out how to get through. The rest of the game was fun from what I dimly recall.

OK I'm gonna show my age here but when I was 5 my parents bought a BBC Model B which came with the "Welcome" compilation. Nestled right at the end of the tape was a game called "Kingdom" which had you trying to run a small kingdom, keep the population fed, protect it from bandits etc. Everyone always goes on about how Americans played Oregon Trail when they were at school but nobody remembers the BBC micro and its awesome game, Kingdom. Let the Americans die of dysentery while fording a river, us Brits have a monarchy to run.

I literally just played through it on GOG.com a couple months ago. It's held up better than I would have expected, though it's still not without it's faults. Mostly the controls and combat are really not great, as well as the voice acting as mentioned in the video. But I put something like 30 hours into it and don't regret a minute of it. It has some of the best level design and environmental puzzles I've ever seen.

I remember (and am currently looking at) a fun little puzzle game for PS1 called No One Can Stop Mr. Domino. If you know all the wacky things that happen in Katamari Damacy, this little game about setting up a line of dominoes such that they activate events on the board to knock down further dominoes is actually rather difficult, but also hilarious in that distinctly Japanese way
