@rossisnoble70495 жыл бұрын
Dude that reaction, whilst well intended you've implied they will give the enjoyment of a modern game which isn't true imo. I love GTA 3 & Tony Hawk (better than any Skate) and I'd agree they are still good but that's because they are arguably the most refined of these choices which impede your nostalgia the least, making them easier to slip back to from modern games. What a gamer really wants is challenge that's not from the controls or the graphics aka refinement (Not mechanic choices like no map as that could be conceived as fair difficulty. Most of the rest require you recreate playstyles to conquer iffy controls/ eye bleeding graphics. Ultimately that's unfair difficulty which will probably taint the memories of these games. That's my opinion (No swearing needed) but to each their own.
@jeanesseintes34515 жыл бұрын
@@rossisnoble7049 Tomb Raider,Goldeneye,Metroid,GTA3 etc. are definitely more fun than many of the games that come out today,though they are definitely designed differently, and Tony Hawk is a good game to start with in the series and can be beaten in just a couple hours fully,Tony Hawk 2 -4 are much better and much more challenging though the simple design of 1 is fun as a warmup or start to the series. Controls that take skill to master and work well once you do are a legitimate form of challenge,Tomb Raider actually has really precise controls compared to a lot of 3d games at the time,once you get used to the animations and timing and realize it is working on a grid system like Prince of Persia.They don't make FPS games based on exploring a level like Goldeneye anymore,and the way the shooting works with the animations makes it still feel good,emulators can make it run at a better fps if the slowdown bothers you.

@Nick930 I love retro games as well, even if they look as good as a punch to the stomach feels lol. But in my opinion a lot of the games on the list are well, lacking compared to their sequels. Goldeneye, while still a classic and one of the most influential games ever, isn’t as good as its spirtual successor, Perfect Dark. My same thoughts with Pokemon Red and Blue compared to Pokemon Gold and Silver, GTA III compared to GTA: San Andreas. Not saying those are bad far from it, just their sequels greatly outshine them.

IIRC, crit chance was a factor of speed in the first game, so stupid high speed meant high chance to crit anyway, add in Slash's higher than normal chance and you'd basically perma-crit with that combo. But yeah, Psychic was the OP type, part due to the broken Special stat and part due to the fact its two weaknesses, Ghost and Bug, hads no decent moves. If you could get Alakazam, you could sweep pretty much everything.
@wingedmirage42266 жыл бұрын
tpbloomfield actually Ghost had no effect on Psychic back then. Because of glitches. There are a LOT of those in the old games. ...Which is why I'm going to replay them. Not for nostalgia, but to have fun with the glitches. Makes it a totally different experience.

Hibekaze veteran duelist I did that, only with Dugtrio XD I played the game normally for a while, but it's so bland compared to later entries. The move sets actually suffer the most, with a very poor selection and Pokémon learning very little via level up. So many of my Pokémon had Tackle or other weak moves simply because there was little to replace them with. I do think, however, that this is actually a great game to start on. With the least amount of Pokémon, types, and moves, it makes it simpler and easier to understand, and isn't too hard or long. And the games only get better from there :)
@AubadeAlchemist6 жыл бұрын
IMO the problem with Pokemon Red and Blue isn't the look of the pokemon, it's the lack of all the quality of life and balancing tweaks that happened in later iterations. You can't run, there is no special attack or defense, dragon and psychic are OP as hell, etc.

@@user-we9pt4xg4j They didn't really, the IV, DV, and EVs weren't fully known at the time. Most of the mechanics of the game were rocky at best and there was no balance. Competitive tournaments happened maybe a handful of times a year, I would guess mostly at the New York Pokemon center. There was no online battle simulation so you basically only would have had a few local friends to test anything out with (or yourself if you had multiple games). On top of that, none of the resources to do anything with were in existence at the time. Gen 2 had a handful of tools to help competitive battling but the balance was way off and the community was small. Smogon didn't exist until FR/LG, it was essentially the 3rd generation of Pokemon games before competitive really started kicking off, with abilities, held items that were useful beyond leftovers, and enough Pokemon that actually made competitive battles interesting.

Well several of these it was more about being the popular game rather than the only game at the time doing that kind of thing just because they got enough elements right enough that people liked it. Some of them weren't even the first to do those kinds of things as claimed. Kingsfield for example was doing a 3d environment stuff from a first person perspective for example but it was firmly in the RPG genre but it also predates Tomb Raider by over a year. People also forget that back in the day Tomb Raider was seen as primarily a PC game even though it was made available to consoles. Controls to work on the consoles were secondary in thought structure to the PC controls.

Not gonna lie, I still dust off GTA 3 every once in awhile, mostly because the controls are so simple, and there is no "lag" when you want the character to do something. You press Triangle, he just throws the nearest person out of their car and gets in, you press Circle and he throws a cross right into the jaw of an opponent. There is no struggling with a physics engine that drags your character along with a speeding car that he idiotically clings to because you told him to steal it, all the while getting riddled with bullets from every angle by cops, and there is no awkwardly telegraphed punches that need more windup than a pro-league pitch. The character does what you f***ing tell him to do, without fail, no matter what the circumstances. Sure, it breaks the "immersion" but who the hell wants to play a game where the controls only perform the stated actions 80% of the time? Imagine playing chess and asking your knight to jump a pawn, but instead of just jumping over the f***ing pawn, the horse catches his ankle on the helmet of the pawn, ragdolls like a motherf***er in the air, then lands *right in front* of the queen five spaces away. I guess it's "realistic", but f*** me if you just lost because most of the difficulty in the game is derived from just getting your character to behave reliably. Or just being free from contextual commands in general. In GTA 3, I can jump whenever the hell I want, I don't need to ask permission. Granted, I can't jump everywhere, but it's not like I need to wait for some floating prompt to give it the old college try. TBH, I will be unpopular in this opinion, but I enjoyed Chinatown Wars much more than GTA 4 or 5. If it had been a full-fledged game on the consoles or PC, and they kept the cool stuff like the minigames for jacking cars, that would be the tits. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of full motion and voice acting, but there is something to be said for those protagonists that just shut their traps and got to work, and they did it well. Claude, Gordon Freeman, Doomguy, etc. They just don't make 'em like they used to...
@Anthrolithos6 жыл бұрын
@Kedrick Rhodes Oh, yes. San Andreas was a classic. I deeply enjoyed the game, mostly because it was the pinnacle of the 3D era for Rockstar. Excellent story, fully fleshed-out characters, and varied/expansive gameplay. Not to forget Samuel L. Jackson playing the villain. I won't disagree that San Andreas is fun, but GTA 3 still holds a special place in my gamer soul. It was the game that really got my attention when I was a kid. And I dunno, there is just something funny, endearing and sometimes disturbing about a protagonist who refuses to yell out even if he is shot, run over, drowned, or set on fire... Like screaming would make him less of a man or something, lol. Plus the Radio stations made me bust my gut laughing when I was little. The skit where Lazlo lets that vegetarian karate dude try to chop his desk in half almost made me suffocate. There was a time when Rockstar's humour was distinctly childish and cartoon-like. Chinatown Wars went back to that old-school feeling, with a few new twists.

GTA IV was so much worse than 3 character wise. In one memorable play through I killed dozens of innocents, blew up the ambulance that came to revive what was left of the corpses, caused countless $ worth of damage. Only to get back in the car and explain to my badly written girlfriend (who I'd been cheating on the entire game) about how I wanted to turn my life around and leave my past behind me. When I played I was an amoral piece of shit, the game forced a misplaced morality on my Nico that was at odds with who he was. This is why Claude was a better protagonist. Mute characters have whatever motivation you want them to have. Claude kept us guessing, did he approach that last mission for revenge? For self preservation? To save his love interest? Ultimately, it was up to the player to decide. Also Chinatown wars is the best in the series.

@@TopLob I have played GTA 5, and I won't lie, I had some fun in the begining. However, GTA is famous for having somewhat "Universal" rules within games. For example, there is nothing the cops can do that you can't, and that holds true for all the GTA games. So while I can appreciate the ability to shoot people in their cars, *they can shoot back*. To me, this is super problematic when you are facing hordes of gangbangers, cops, black ops, etc. Who can surround you and pepper your booty with gunfire. I just liked it more when the car around you counted for more than a wet paper bag's worth of protection. But to each their own. Realism is an attractive notion, but I just feel it is mis-implemented in most games, including the newer GTA games.

C'mon guys, silent protagonist, despite the occasional in-game joke about "this guy doesn't say much" was really video game shorthand for "there's probably some dialogue here, the player can fill it in." Claude isn't literally a mute murderer. It just means you have to do the work to role play his reaction. It also means he's never obnoxiously annoying, like every single other character. GoldenEye is much more pleasant to play with the "Solitaire" control option. That allows you to control Bond's movement, including the all-important strafing, with the d-pad (or the C buttons) and aiming with the stick. Obviously it's not going to be as smooth as today's dual analog shooters, but it's similar enough that it at least won't break your brain in half like the default control scheme. There is also an option for two controllers but that is the most unwieldy thing ever and strafing is mapped to the right stick, so much brokenness of the brain is to be expected there as well.
@ArtifiSir6 жыл бұрын
This this this right here! I figured everyone who owned the game figured out that using the c buttons for movement and the stick for looking was the right way to go about playing GoldenEye, especially when we found out moving in a diagnol direction made you go faster. All my friends in elementary school used this control method, and I love how it was carried over to perfect dark and then timesplitters.
@rmsgrey6 жыл бұрын
The forward/backward/turn left/turn right controls go back beyond the original DOOM. Of course, back in the day, you had to hold down ALT to strafe - it was Hexen that introduced me to the joys of strafing, and Quake that made mouse look standard and put 4-direction movement onto WSAD. "Tank controls" were still around on PC when GoldenEye released, so having them as the default movement option for the game (with strafe L/R and look up/down on the c-buttons) was reasonable at the time. Having the range of control configurations to choose between was unusual, if reasonable for a time when FPS controls were still being figured out for mouse-and-keyboard, let alone consoles. I found that the dual-controller options allowed for more precision, but slowed down reaction time due to the lag in reaching full tilt on the analogue sticks.

To be fair... at the time "Mouse and WASD" was relatively new to PC FPS... and most of those were using the left and right shift keys or the left and right alt keys to strafe with... and often PGUP/PGDN to look up and down. The Goldeneye default control scheme matches up with the most common PC FPS control schemes at the time. Yes... there was a time when Mouse+WASD was a new thing that computer games were doing... and that time was actually somewhat after Goldeneye on the N64. Before Mouse+WASD, we used the shift,ctl,alt keys for the purposes of strafing... and PGUP/PGDN to look up and down. Keep forgetting that kids these days do not know this.

Goldeneye had an alternate (and superior) control scheme where the C buttons were essentially WASD and the stick acted as the 'mouse.'
@OniGanon6 жыл бұрын
Barely touched the keyboard? Nah dude. You barely touched the mouse. The standard FPS control scheme used to be arrow keys for forward/back/turn, ALT+(left or right) for strafe, LCTRL for shoot, LSHIFT for sprint, and SPACE to interact. That's more or less the default scheme for Wolf3D, Doom, Duke3D and Quake.
@Quandry16 жыл бұрын
I remember when the mouse basically un-needed or not even included in the controls myself. modern controls frustrate me because I'm a left handed mouse user. I miss the arrow and function key controls.
@Quandry16 жыл бұрын
@LTNetjak this is actually wrong. It was a setup used even before that not only in multiplayer possible games such as worms. But also periodically on some of the really old adventure style games and such. This is because the standard keyboard of that era did not have arrow keys or a mouse. It was an alternate setup in some games in the 90's that people didn't realize as well. The arrow keys became a primary function with the growing commonality of both the extended keyboard and mouse controls. Extended keyboard by the way was everything right of the enter key. With everything included in that either being a function key function or alt function or simply non existant such as the numb key directional controls. Num key directional controls were my preferred fps controls for a time by the way because strafe buttons were included in the compact layout.

Agreed. Great premise for a list but lousy execution I felt. I would agree about Pokémon Red and Blue but because of how many conveniences are gone (Limited bag space, manual box change, no running shoes) and of how some mechanics are just broken (Special stat, no strong Bug moves, bulbapedia has more examples). The sprites I can deal with. Odd things in early installments does not equal unplayable. That is a different list.

Goldeneye is still very playable. One just has to familiarize themselves with the awkward N64 controller. In 1997 when this game was new it practically sold people on the system by itself. A lot of novice players used to D-pads had to educate themselves on the spot and go through trial and error until they were expert marksman. That's how games are played. If people desire to play Goldeneye again, they'll just have to figure out the controller, just like they did 20 years ago.
