The issue with Muller is that he doesn’t have pace, he cant head the ball, he doesn’t have a powerful shot, he cant tackle, he runs like a clown and he just isn’t intimidating as a striker. Yet he has that ability to be at the right place at the right time and more importantly he knows exactly what to do with the ball when he gets it, hardly putting a pass wrong. He is the best asset to any team and is the very definition of an underrated player.

For me it has to be Lionel Messi in 2018. That season Barcelona won La Liga losing only 1 game: a crazy 5-4 loss away to Levante after the league title had already been wrapped up, with Messi not included in the match day squad. So, Messi didn't lose a single league game all season. They also won the Copa del Rey, thrashing Sevilla in the final. Messi was phenomenal all season. Barcelona's top scorer and assister (La Liga top scorer and assister as well) and singlehandedly destroyed Antonio Conte's Chelsea in the Champion's League. He was also vital in Barcelona's 3-0 victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. The reason why this is one of the most underrated seasons of all times is what happened in the Ballon D'Or ceremony following this season: Messi finished 5th. This was absolutely disgusting. Messi had won a domestic league and cup double, going undefeated, had scored 45 goals and made 20 assists (the most goal contributions in Europe), had the most goals from outside the box, most goals from free-kicks, most touches in the opposition box, most chances created, most key passes, most dribbles completed, most passes in the final third in all of Europe... and he finished 5th. It was an absolute disgrace. The reason was simple: Barcelona were shocked in the Champion's League by Roma (nothing to do with Messi, the goals came from an Umtiti mistake, a penalty and a corner) and Argentina didn't perform great at the World Cup (personally I don't think Argentina were a good team and people only rated them because of Messi, so I wasn't surprised when France with a much more balanced team knocked them out). No other player in history could have a season where they finish top scorer, top assister, win the league, win the cup and not lose a single game whilst also having all the other stats I mentioned and finish only 5th in the Ballon D'Or, in one of the top 5 leagues in Europe. Most underrated season in football history.

@zirbto57493 жыл бұрын
Not in his prime doesn't matter it isn't an award about how good you have been but an award about how good you are at that moment. Messi was good that year but he was the center of a Barcelona team who failed completely in the CL knockout stages. And many of his goals were against small teams even back then he was already declining and not scoring much against big teams. "Problem" with Müller is that it is not obvious to everyone what he really does better than others. Not just with fans, sometimes even with coaches. Müller was a bit lucky that van Gaal become Bayern coach, because he had the insight to recognize his exceptional talent. Klinsmann before him didn't have this. Same with Kovac and current day Löw, while Flick and Guardiola (in his case after initial skepticism) fully understood his worth.

Rating Bayern Munichs seasons is so hard. Because they inflate their stats by winning 6:0 against inferior Bundesliga competition. For example: Franck Ribery didn't score one goal in his last 3 Champions League campaigns. But he looked brilliant in national competition. Müller is similar: His last relevant good game against in the Quarterfinals or later stage (aka when you actually meet good competition, not FC Basel) was legit the Final in 2012. And then the 8:2 against Barca, where the opponent completely collapsed. During the semi and the Final, it again wasn't Müller, who decided the games. Another fun stat: He needed like 6 games to get one goal or assist against RB Leipzig... aka the only team that doesn't usually freeze in awe when Bayern comes to town. Müller is wonderful at turning a 2:0 into a scoring festival (as seen in the Barca Game. Or the 7:1 Brazil - Germany Semifinal in 2014... the last time Müller scored a relevant goal for his national team.). He lives that "mia san mia"... But in close competition, when it really matters, he isn't that good. Still have nothing but respect for that man. He outperformed his talent level for so many years. But he is just a role player on that Munich Roster.

How is Roberto Firmino’s season not in here. His 17/18 season went under the eye only cos of the season Salah had. He had 28 goals and 17 assists while also getting 18 goal contributions in 13 UCL games
