Let’s talk about the fact that in Up when Carl accidentally paint his hand in the mail box Ellie has the best reaction. She doesn’t yell, get mad that he “ruined it”, doesn’t make him feel bad about it, even tho she spend time making it. She just smile and does the same. It’s like she is saying, it’s okay, let’s take this “accident” and turn it in to something new. Make the best of everything. Not focus on the “mistake” or make you feel bad about it.❤

As someone struggling with infertility, UP shows an AMAZING example of taking it in stride and still living and spending together. It's been one of my favorite movies since it came out, and always will be. In the film "The Help", Johnny and Celia could count as a happy marriage. He doesn't care that she can't cook, take care of their house, or that she's had several miscarriages trying to give him children. He just wants her to be happy, and they're one of the only couples in the movie who seem genuinely happy together.

@@voicesforlife I don't know as though _Johnny_ is the one making Celia feel like she needs to be the perfect wife... I always felt that it was Celia making herself feel that way due to thinking Johnny only married her because she was pregnant and because of the pressures of the other wives in the society clique. She just desperately didn't want to embarrass or disappoint him. Unless I'm forgetting something that Johnny did or said, ofc. 🤷‍♀️

One of the most moving "movie marriage" moments for me took up just a few seconds of screen time. In the movie Titanic, when the ship is going down and steerage passengers are panicking at the locked stairwell gates, we cut to an old married couple who meet their fate while lying in bed, holding each other, and staring into each other's eyes.

@pdruiz2005

That was based on a real-life couple who died going down with the ship-Isidor and Ida Straus. Isidor and his brother had become co-owners of Macy’s department store in the 1890s. So the couple was very rich. They were on the Titanic because they were returning from a visit to their native Germany, where they still had family. I bet she supported him so much in the stressful world of entrepreneurship, through thick and thin. Couple goals right there.

I’d like to add that, for that first scene, Tucci’s character wasn’t talking for the most part. While he doesn’t offer a solution to her worries and it appears he isn’t engaged, he’s actually taking in what she’s saying and responds accordingly. He’s actively listening. They clearly both respect each other. That’s awesome! A very healthy relationship indeed!

The parents from Easy A played by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson. They're obviously healthily in love and playful and charming. They're also age appropriate. Too often the dad is allowed to age and grey gracefully but the mom needs to pretend to not have wrinkles. They're both beautiful with natural charisma and chemistry between each other. They care for their kids equally. One is an adoptee and it's just a natural thing to reference for them.

I think Bob and Helen Parr are a great example of how the fabric of our relationships evolves with time and remembering to choose and fight for each other when things get hard. I also love how they exemplify learning to forgive ourselves and each other when a partner has made a mistake or is struggling. On the contrary, I'd call Bob and Hellen Parr an example of the closest people can come to that ideal of a "perfect" marriage. They have their fights, they don't always see eye to eye, but they stick together, they work through their problems and they communicate. Not perfectly, but they try.

That scene you put from the Emperor's New Groove is soooo good (as is the entire film): "they can handle themselves" -no doubt about it. Pacha is not a neurotic protector who thinks his family is incapable and if he can't take care of them nobody will. The relationship that Ellie and Carl had aside from the infertility reminded me so much of my Mum and Dad. She was fairly young (63 when she was diagnosed) and I bawled my eyes out through the whole movie for how they just lived to make each other happy. @@giovannadiaz1917 On the other hand, one miscarriage isn't usually enough on its own to make you give up on having children. And the nursery decoration is more about when you expect to have kids rather than when you're definitely pregnant (unless you're taken by surprise) - though, yeah, it's pretty plausible that it would get put off until the looming deadline makes it urgent rather than being done as a project early.
@LuckasSilver
@LuckasSilver Жыл бұрын
@@rmsgrey All good points, but to add on: In my family and amongst some family friends, the first miscarriage was always how they found out about issues with how their uterus developed as well as infertility. Uterine septum is one issue they could learn about, where fertilization can happen, but the placenta doesn't develop properly, and a unicornuate uterus, which means it is smaller than normal and cause an increase in ectopic pregnancies etc. There's other conditions, like endometriosis, can be discovered because of that first miscarriage. Some people are lucky regardless of the complications they face with these conditions etc., but that doesn't takeaway from the many who still cannot succeed. In the case of UP!, seeing one miscarriage or failed fertilization can be more than enough to make people give up on having children. (This is just to add on and potentially educate anyone interested,. None of this was intended to take away or diminish what was already said. Anyone and everyone is free to ignore me.)

I love the marriage in "It's a Wonderful Life." It's not perfect by any means, but it shows that perfection is not required for a good marriage. Rather, overcoming the imperfections is what makes it good. When George loses it and acts out against his family, his wife tries to understand what's going on. But in the end, he takes a good look at himself and fixes his perspective for the good of everyone. The movie also takes the philosophy of making the best of a bad situation and adjusting to change of plans to its very core.

I really liked Olive's parents in Easy A - yeah they seem a bit aloof sometimes but their whole dynamic as a family is really great, supportive and funny. Only goes to show that being raised in a good family is not necessarily boring and does not make boring adults out of boring children - you can parent your child and still be funny - it is possible. And another one I always loved is the Weasleys from Harry Potter - best portrayal of poverty is a state of mind not of your wallet because they don't have much in terms of material stuff but they have everything as long as they have each other.

Not only Carl and Ellie but also Julia and Paul experienced not pursuing the dream of having a child. And still had a good life and a great marriage. I love how in the movie Julie and Julia they show Julia's reaction to the lady with a baby on the street and her husband's immediate support, he knew what she felt without any words and comforted her. They make me believe that I can do it too, just live my life with my best friend and take on everything what life brings, even when it hurts so much.

My husband was my advocate even before my diagnosis of ASD Level 1 and ADHD Inattentive Presenting Moderate. When I first began the process and told him, "I think I'm on the autism spectrum", he asked how it would change our lives. I told him I wasn't sure, but I imagine it will only get better because now I'll have the tools to work around my obstacles. It's been a few years, and our companionship is even stronger and more beautiful! And he is still my advocate. Good people are out there, and lonely, and wanting companionship. Your eyes need to be wide while dating, sure, but you also need to discern what is a red flag vs. what is just natural human shortcomings, and your partner has to also do that. I think a tragedy of our world at the moment is so many people aren't willing to extend grace or compassion for the human shortcomings. I had a guy that proposed to me, and when I turned him down he said, "but we are soul mates, I just feel it." So I asked my father, who is a flawed human being but who still gives me good counsel, if he believed in soul mates. After thinking for a moment, he said yes. But then he said, "but soul mates aren't instantaneous. Soul mates become soul mates because they trust and can be trusted through the ups and downs of life. And there are going to be a lot of ups and a lot of downs. But somewhere along the way, choosing to be kind and graceful even through the hardest storms, you become each other's soul mates." I always thought that was beautiful. I am so grateful I didn't settle for that man who proposed to me. It was incredibly painful, unraveling our lives from one another. But I found my husband two years later, who was a friend for about a year before he asked me out (because I was dating other people, and so was he). I only agreed to the date because I figured it would be a fun distraction, this man didn't have hardly any qualities I thought I wanted in a spouse. And I almost broke up with him twice, over issues that felt significant but then I realized they were actually just human missteps. We've been together 12+ years now, have two beautiful neurodivergent children, and are still so in love and happy! I'm grateful I wasn't too prideful to take a chance on a friend, and to really evaluate situations. My father tried to talk me out of marrying my husband a few days before our wedding, but I knew without a doubt that the imperfect man I was marrying was someone who would always put God and family before anything else in this life, and that was important to me. After 4 years of marriage, my Dad finally called my husband "son", and it was beautiful!

As a kid, I thought the scene with Ellie and Carl in Up not being able to have kids was sad. As an adult currently going through infertility struggles with their partner, it is unbelievably gut wrenching. And it’s a story that deserves representation. It feels a lot like grief. Grieving a life you imagined. Grieving the pregnancies that didn’t result in a birth. Grieving this piece of your relationship you aren’t able to experience together. But I love that they go on to have a happy life together regardless. I’m still hopeful that it’ll happen for us someday, but I watch the Up intro every once in a while when I’m feeling especially lost to remind me that I’m lucky to have found my Carl. Adventure is out there ❤

@@hinasakukimi When I was 19, I spent a month in Ho Chi Minh working at an orphanage that was indescribably sad. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to adopt at some point, and my husband agrees. But it’s very expensive and there is a LOT to consider. Private vs public adoptions, open vs. closed, fostering, local vs international, age, disability, etc. Not to mention the ethics of it and what is ultimately best for the child. I am a firm believer that adoption should not be about having ownership of a child, but wanting to do what is best for them. But that’s easier said than done. I’ve heard some adoptees make the case that true “adoption” is like branding ownership over another person without their consent, but usually in those cases they either experienced some form of abuse from their adoptive parents, or their adoption was lorded over their heads, or their parents used it as a symbol of their own status (usually most common when white parents adopt a non-white child). Not only this, but parents who turn to adoption due to infertility tend to impart unintended traumas onto their adoptive children as part of their own inability to heal. It’s a tricky dynamic. That is to say we are still in our late 20s and we planned on looking at adoption a little later in our lives. So we will see what is in the cards! If you’ve adopted or were adopted, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject!

The medical procedures or drugs or tests offered as possible answers, the waiting, the hope, the grief...I know. We're now at the point where we have to ask "what next?" It's not an easy decision. So many times I blamed myself for what happened, things I could have done differently that might have saved the pregnancy, and every time she's there to tell me that it wasn't my fault and I did my best. At the same time, she blames herself, saying she could have done better and failed as a mother, and I'm always there to tell her that she's not to blame and she did her best. I still carry some guilt, as I'm sure she does as well, but the important thing is we've never blamed the other person and we're always there for each other. Heck, the Deetzes, while dysfunctional, really do care for one another. I didn't see it when I was a kid, but Delia Deetz is actually quite relatable now. She sacrificed so much of the life she loved for her husband's sake--she could have refused to leave the city but she didn't. Yes, she's salty about it, but that's fair. And while she and Lydia are constantly bickering she's not cruel to the kid. Also, she stood up for herself in the matter of remodeling but was willing to accommodate Charles's weird desire to just move into a dead man's study.

Another honorable mention from an episode you guys have done before: Yasuko and Tatsuo, the mother and father from My Neighbor Totoro! I think they have a healthy marriage. Even though she is sick and unable to take care of her children as she would want to be able to, she still shows them such love and compassion when they come to visit her. And as a father taking care of his kids almost alone, Tatsuo is such a strong, kind character as you guys pointed out in the episode. I know the focus is more on the kids in that movie but I figured I'd throw their names in!!

Yes, there's never any sign of resentment from Tatsuo or any complaints about her not being there to be the caregiver, etc (unlike so many men who still call it "babysitting" when looking after their own kids! 😤). I'd say that 2005 Pride & Prejudice is the one version where Mr. Bennett and Mrs Bennett have a healthy marriage. Mr Bennett has a kinder humor in his teasing of his wife, there are moments where they touch and kiss, and we also saw them lay in bed and talk to each other. They were an older couple with different personalities who were quite content with each other. I think their shared hobby of eavesdropping through doors kept their spark alive.

I for the most part agree!! In the animated series you get a lot more of her parents, and there is definitely some room for growth there though. If you're talking strictly about their marriage, yes I can see that! They are supportive of each other. But, in the series the king is so paranoid of Rapunzel being kidnapped or worse in the outside world again, and he does try to lock her within the palace for a lot of the show though (obviously harkening back to the movie). The queen from what I remember just tries to tell Rapunzel to understand where her father's requests are coming from, so she does kind of condone that behavior in the beginning. I think she is a lot less overprotective of Rapunzel though. They weren't perfect, but of course they land in a better place at the end of the series.

PB is a hella fun movie, but honestly the main romance is pretty nothing. Westley and Buttercup are only in "True Love" because the movie says so. The relationship begins with her bitching and bossing him till he falls for her ("As you wish"), and then she falls in love back cause in movies if someone loves you deeply you are required to love them back, it's the rule. Their love is fine as the backdrop for all the great adventure, but I dont think the relationship itself is really worth examining.

Also Howl and Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle, it does seem sort of magical "oh now we're in love", but he learns to love her and she learns to love him and herself by being unself-conscious in her old age, he says he's inspired by her and isn't lying and lets her come into her own on her own (the book is a whole separate conversation that is unique and beautiful in it's own right but this is a movie channel).

I think Brave is another good example of a healthy marriage, the parenting aspect struggles of course since it's the whole plot of the movie, but Fergus* is always head over heels for his wife and when the absolute relief and joy he has when he realizes that she wasn't killed by a bear is such a sweet and cute touch. Also as a possible series idea: Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks fathers, since you're both dads yourselves I think it'd be interesting to see your take on fathers like Mufasa, the Great Prince of the Forest (Bambi 2), Merlin (Finding Nemo), Fergus*, Stoik (How to Train Your Dragon), etc. and perhaps ones that may not be biological but were willing to step up to the plate like Gobber, Mr. Peabody, Pharaoh Seti I (Prince of Egypt), David(Lilo & Stitch), Ping and Shifu (Kung Fu Panda). Movie recommendation for funsies: The Slipper and the Rose, it's free on youtube rn. I saw Brave as an example of a marriage that did need work, though. At the end of the movie, it was just about perfect. But Elinor really did 'rule the roost' and that wasn't all to the good for the family. The boys didn't respect their father and Merida didn't respect her mother. In the beginning of the movie, you see it - he's a bit more casual about her fretting. But by the time Merida is a teenager, he's obviously worn down into a 'yes dear' man. But at the end, with everything restored, she goes off riding with Merida and lets him take care of those exasperating triplets himself... and a wife should be able to do that from time to time. She should be able to trust her man with their children and with other matters, and not take over every time she thinks she'd do it better. Even a less perfect handling of the situation is better than a marriage in which one partner always winds up being the responsible one.

He gives her hope when she feels super discouraged. His endless optimism brings his family through to the end, and I think it's worth exploring.

10000% Their whole family dynamic is so strong and it shows how love can transcend even the most tragic and gruesome events. It's one of my favorites and I'd love for them to talk about it!

1:24 Thank you guys for mentioning asexuality! It often goes ignored (because of the lack of education about it and representation of it in media), so it means so much when people acknowledge it ❤

Yeah. That's why it took until I was 32 to figure out I wasn't fundamentally broken, I was just ace. I didn't know it was a Thing you could be until then. I'm 38 now.

@@kriscynical I know the feeling. It makes me sad to think that there are so many other people who have also thought they were broken (and may still think that) just because it is never talked about.

I also love how in Hidden Figures we see the guy who marries Katherine Johnson ensuring that her kids are happy with him marrying their mom and supporting her career (after the initial hiccup when they first meet!). Max and Bella in Notting Hill are another lovely couple.

As someone who identifies as asexual and is still struggling to accept my sexuality it really means a lot to me that someone outside of the LGBTQIA+ community acknowledges it. It really makes a difference and gives me a lot of hope. Thank you so much

In emperor’s new groove I LOVE the way Izma’s influence on Kuzko is shown (she raised him! no wonder he has pretty similar issues) AND the friendship with age difference between Kuzko and Pacha (and then whole his family) - Kuzko just turned 18 and is quite fresh, still forming personality, whereas Pacha is at least 25 (and I hope more) solid family man. Pacha becomes for Kuzko some type of mentor figure, but still they both learn from each other. Really beautifully written

My favorite marriage from TV and movies is Zoe and Wash from Firefly. The episode "War Stories" directly addresses their relationship, but there are numerous wonderful comments that show how they feel about it each throughout the series.

I know that it’s not a marriage as much as a fiancée relationship but in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2 we see such a supportive relationship of HEALTHY sacrifices and recognition of differences in Emmett and Elle! I’d love any kind of video on these movies as Elle was such an important feminine figure in the early 00’s!

John’s explanation of marriage and how romance is great but it’s also about partnership has got to be one of the most beautiful explanations of marriage I’ve ever seen. Me and my best friend love each other platonically SO much. We look like a couple to people who don’t know us, but we arent romantically together. We’ve been friends for 4 years now (and have dated in that time until we realised we didn’t want that) and have considered each other soulmates and even twin flames. We’ve actually discussed and want to go forward with getting married because our partnership is so strong and it’s really lovely to see marriage explained as a union of two people who want the best for the other rather than just a romantic thing you do after dating for a while 💛
