Any of you drummers out there that go to church, but don't play, seriously try to get in the choir. I learned so much about how my sound effects the other musicians just by playing in a church. You change venues some times too, so you may get the experience of learning how to play depending on the way sound propagates through the space. We didn't have any mics or plastic around our drums either, so it was all on me. It made me a significantly better drummer just through that alone, and you will usually have other church drummers that you will learn equally as much from them as well.

As a novice black drummer from a pretty religious family and a very spiritual and musical black church, I just wanna spread some wisdom shared with me by the serveral drummers we have at the church. (We have two drummers at the church, in case one is absent and two drummers for each of our adult choirs.) For gospel drumming you want to start quiet. The beginning of the song should be on cross-stick and should transition to quiet hits on the snare before the first chorus, and around the last chorus (and if your church is as enthusiastic as mine is, there probably will be a repeat of the chorus/encore) you wanna switch to ride. I say this because a lot of my church member are members of the older crowd and they would prefer if things got gradually and appropriately loud. Knowledge of Jazz, Swing, Funk, Boogie-Woogie, Rock n Roll and Caribbean drumming is pretty important due to the variation amongst Gospel and Spiritual music. (We have an international day at my church annually, so the instrumentatation must be able to preform ethnically diverse genres) CCM tends to be more similar to Rock, Country, Pop and Folk, so listening to these genres is pretty important. Playing Gospel is like playing in a band or group in that you must pay attention to the rest of the musicians and the singers as well as the situation you're playing in. However, this is Gospel. In the Gospel Genre, the religious message is much more important than the music at times. Also, I didn't know that there was a perception that Gospel drumming was about having amazing chops, I always thought that it was about sounding good and appropriate. My church's drummer's only demonstrate their chops during fills and during the end of the song's "fermata" of sorts. I hope this was informative, feel free to correct me on anything I said wrong, mispoke on or didn't say.

Don't be negative, music is a gift from God to mankind so that we may worship Him, of course, God is God of variety. African Voodoo does not own music, they just borrowed and corrupted it. But the idea, the essence of music that is directed to the glorification of God is what's most important.

These are great and good to know beats, and it's great to have that 2-beat 'shout' chorus in your back pocket, in case people start jumpin' pews like in the Blues Brothers movie, but I theenk I woulda included the 6/8 swing ballad feel that I play about 75% of the time, when I'm in church. I find that when soul singers get ready to REALLY emote, they go for that 6/8 feel. I've heard older musicians refer to it as "Cut 12" or 'double waltz" time, whether swung or shuffled.

Well...yes and no. I wish this guy was either better educated or a lil older cause he might know or be more knowledgeable bout the roots of American music in general n trap drumming specifically. American musical culture for the most part is black or derived from various African rhythms and chants. Europeans only really bring their ‘classical’ music to the mix and even that by way of inventions of various instruments is African but I digress. The basis for MOST American music is the Blues. All black Gospel music is/was based in Blues progressions which was created out of chants, field hollers and other choral innovations employed by Africans and their descendants as slaves. When he sez Waltz could be doubled into 6/8 which of course when played ‘straight’ is a standard African rhythm you’ve heard many times before. He never mentioned another Gospel staple which is that hand jive/Nawlin’s based/BoDiddley clave beat. When he mentions Caribbean for example he should just say African made popular by Caribbeans but it’s based in the Guanguancoe. As far as Blues/Rock/Metal....(leave out de Blues cause I already splained dat). Rock/Metal = Rock = Rock n Roll = Rock and Roll = Rhythm and Blues (R&B). Rock and Roll was a euphemism for sex and was what was much of da featured lyric of many a tune when this new music based in swingin Jazz was invented. It came from many but it’s main inventors were: New Orleans and it’s various intersectional play between the secular n sacred. THE place where Gospel met Jazz n all it’s polyrhythms n syncopation Louis Jordan (satire, sass and swing w/a lil sex). White folk used this as fuel to their racist black oversexed stereotype. He made the Nawlins stuff mainstream as the new thing Little Richard - soaring Gospel vocals now applied to this music. The first to make a serious vocal statement of note over this new music. Also heavy emphasis on rhythm. Ray Charles - combines Jazz, Gospel, R&B and introduces Soul into the mix. There’s also a heavier emphasis on big band orchestration as opposed to rhythm section Chuck Berry - brought the heaviest Blues into this mix. Emphasis here o. The guitar and that funny lil sweet spot where bluegrass or country n Blues are really quite similar. Rock n Metal were jes a way white folk n culture banditry felt the need to claim some shit for themselves. Ya can’t Git there from here. Hendrix n Funkadelic were really the best at even that. But prog rock, speed n death metal etc are all very evolved forms of music dat take much practice and skill to execute. But make no mistake bout it’s origins
@greatwhitenorth20775 жыл бұрын
Until the blues incorporated the speed of country music there was no rock and roll. And European metal bands have more in common with classical music and less, if none, with blues.
@nukeystik5 жыл бұрын
@@greatwhitenorth2077 none of it ever existed without the blues. euros brought basically nothing to the table relative to culture especially musical culture. rock and Roll's 'guitar' presence is but one integral part of that mix. that was Blues man Chuck Berry who brought it too.
@humanityisdoomed22085 жыл бұрын
See Great White North, you just can't argue with a racist. Classical music came from Blues? Uh, no.

@@humanityisdoomed2208 first of all you still don't understand the meaning of racism and prejudice or bigotry (from which we all suffer unfortunately). I never explicitly or implicitly said Blues are the root of Euro Classical music. Why would I it's bout the only thing they arrived at honestly....even though at least one of the best is of Moorish heritage. I'ts a shame how whites in general struggle with the truth often NOT found in history books. Everything from the names of the days of the week,countries, planets, months...are all constructs of your cultural mythologies...not really the truth but ...yknow it's yo world - we just occupying space lol

That left wrist flick to get the hi hat notes is so slick. Gotta try that out soon
