I've raised pigs, off and on, for 50 yrs...I love hogs. I've always wondered, tho', at what temps they can successfully birth and raise the piglets outside. I have usually timed my sows to pig in warm weather, however was caught w/two new additions one COLD Feb. I moved them into my horse barn stalls, closed 'em up w/sheets of cardboard, and, I think, bought Every heat lamp/bulb in East Tn! WHAT a job! Each sow (sisters) successfully raised 10 babies. 🤞

My gilt raised six gorgeous babies. Two have gone to their new homes with one off to be a show pig! We traded another for a gorgeous little OS/Duroc boar for breeding momma and eventually daughter back to... And we put 3 Kune Kunes in the freezer and have the breeding pair sold! I don't get along with the Kunes. They act like liberals. Sadly, we've lost a goat and our momma goat lost her kids, but her daughter had two gorgeous, blue eyed babies...a little doe and buck and it's been about 3 weeks so it's finally just about fresh milk time! Planting some seeds today, milk stand tomorrow!

Who doesn’t love piglets? 💕 Chuck… maybe you & Sandra can check out the Chinese breed of pigs… Meishans… the meat is red. Delicious I’ve got 25 plus a litter of 9 on the ground & 5 more gilts due in April. I love this breed. UnGodly docile & hyper-prolific. They don’t tear up the pastures either. Take care friends. 🕊️✌️👩‍🌾🐖

Meishans were what we vasectomized at a CAFO breeding/ farrowing pig barn. They were excellent heat detectors. We artificially inseminated the gilts and sows. Usually farrowed 220 to 230 litters each week. My last 6 weeks there i was the pig "midwife." If you must assist, use the arm on the side upon which she is laying. Remember that you canNOT reach far enough into the repro tract to feel if there is/are more pigs to be born. Best to have breeds that farrow and raise the pigs without interference!

@@Marilou-g5t Hello. friend…… very interesting, your experience with the Meishans’. I cut my own males at 10-12 days old. Grow out barrows. This breed takes much longer to grow out as opposed to the run of the mill bacon hogs. As far as the females….. I’ve never had any issues with my first time gilts farrowing out. So far all litters have been 11-12 piglets. No birthing issues. I do know about the males being excellent heat seekers. I have a few unrelated registered Meishan boars so I do not use artificial insemination. 4 breeding boars. Were the Meishans raised at your farm all purebred? Curious… where did your original stock / supply come from ? I know of the first import into the US with Iowa state, The University of Illinois & USDA Animal Science Research Center in Clay Nebraska. There were only 99 brought into the US back in 1989 by the fellows making up the research team. How long ago has it been since you worked there? Is the farm still using Meishan’s? I know after 25 years of studying them…. The research facilities all decided to end their programs at about the same time frame… +/-… there were only 12 remaining Meishan’s total from the 3 research Centers combined. From those last 12 which were saved… there is now a registry through the American Meishan Breeders Association. I believe we now have close to 1200 purebred Meishan’s registered. I’m absolutely loving this breed. They have got to be the most gentle pig breed in existence. The meat is red like steak. It highly micro marbled. Delicious flavor. Considered Premium Pork. Several breeders are curing it for charcuterie styled cuts. Sells for top dollar. I heard another breeder is getting $55.00 per 4 ounces of cured Meishan. Thinly sliced for charcuterie boards. Sealed in vacuum packs. Can you imagine. (?) that’s some serious cash/ profit. During curing…. It takes a good 12-14 months to cure. I’m not quite there just yet… but I’m working towards that angle. For now, I raise them to sell barrows, & also registered breeding stock. Many small farmer type homesteaders are slowly buying up breeding stock due to their gentle nature. My only regret is that I had not learned of them sooner. To my knowledge.. they were not offered up to the general public until 2016. As a matter of fact… when our researchers went to China to hand pick each of the 99… the deal was, the Meishans’ were only to be used for research purposes only. Not to ever get into the hands of the public. Ooops … I think China may be upset with us. 😂. Over there… the average person is not allowed to own a purebred Meishan Boar. If caught, the hog is taken from the family & that person will be imprisoned. Horrible laws. This came from one of the researchers who went to China as part of the research team. We are very fortunate to have such Freedoms. I’d love to learn more of the Meishan’s’ you’ve worked with. Do they still have any left? I’m eager to hear / learn more of your Meishans’. Sounds like such a fun & interesting job you had. You take care. 👋😘🐖👍

@@HappyShackHomestead i believe they were NOT purebred, don't recall gilts/sows, just males were occasionally kept. Was only at pig place 18 months about 6 or 7 years ago. I have no idea when they started using this breed, nor if they still use the breed. The team members removed 1 testicle and vasectomized the other. Lots of the management team members went to Del Val U or Penn State. 2 company veterinarians walked through once a month. Everyone else was intimidated by the 2 docs-which blew my mind. I grew up holding the catgut at 4 or 5 years of age for our family's dairy farm doc, with my eyes glued to the hands and whatever the doc was doing during DA surgeries. He was happy to answer any questions! So i had no problem asking questions about protocols or meds we used with the pigs. Interesting how similar and how different the species are. Our bovine clinic brought new docs to our weekly herd check to get them proficient or weed them out from being a large animal doc. Straight out of university, with a doctoral degree in hand, these folks need hands on experience to round out their book learning.

I think its pretty hypocritical of you to make a video of those adorable piglins of yours. When i see those pictures the only thing I feel is sadness. You only have those pigs to make money off of their dead bodys and the same is true for those piglins. Im sure you arent bad people. You should look to the future and transition to a more ethical form of agriculture because its real shameful that the purpose of those piglins lifes is to get chopped up into pieces and flushed down the Toilet. Im sure you as farmers know deep down that they deserve better...
