Thank you to Austin Sweatt for this video format!

In today's video we go over 7 players that were traded way too soon in their careers. Trading a young player in the NHL is a very risky move, as it can easily blow up in your face. In today's video we go over 7 instances of teams giving up on their potential star players!

In their defence. Rask was still unproven minor league goalie who might or might not turn into anything. While Raycroft (who they traded Rask for) just won the Calder trophy as Boston's starter goalie and on paper was much better than Rask and looked like he could be the Leafs' top goalie for years to come. But no one can predict the future.

When it comes to Dougie Hamilton, the Bruins didnt give up on him, he gave up on the Bruins. He wasnt going to resign here, he didnt want to be here and when youre in a situation where you have to trade away a player like that you take what you can get. Also Senyshyn pick SHOULD have been Konecny or Connor if the Bruins could just draft decently, and then it would have been a really solid trade.

(As a Caps fan) I have never understood that Forsberg trade, but it was a good catalyst event. After the Caps missed playoffs in 1314 (for the first time since 0607), we were justified to fire Oates + McPhee to bring in Trotz + MacLellan. A year after that trade for Oshie who's been a fan favorite in St. Louis and here. A couple years later win the Cup. Nashville definitely won the trade, but I feel we recovered and it's worked out for us just fine.

@@nathan2552 The Preds signed Forsberg to a 6 yr $36M contract. That contract in Washington wouldve made him the highest paid Cap behind Ovi, Backstrom and Holtby. If he wouldve got something around that number from the Caps they wouldnt have been able to afford the Oshie contract they signed shortly thereafter. It also wouldve precluded them from signing Lars Eller. The Blues were looking to trade Oshie so they didnt have to give him the money they knew he was worth. If the Caps still had Forsberg then Oshie wouldnt even have been a possibility as all their cap space wouldve been accounted for. Now, we can debate who will have a better career Oshie or Forsberg but the Caps never wouldve signed Oshie if Forsberg was on the books. Sucks to lose a player of Peter Forsbergs caliber (and the trade looks way more lopsided in hindsight) but his trade made tangential moves possible that added depth and quality to the roster

The Terravainen trade was more bad luck/timing since within that next year Bickel was diagnosed with MS. Had he been diagnosed the year prior he wouldn’t have been used to sweeten the deal for a team to pick up Bickell’s bad contract. And hawks would have been able to write the contract off as LIR. So in general I wouldn’t say they gave up on him more they needed to send the up and comer along to get rid of the bad contract.

Valeri Nichushkin (Nuke) was an absolute flop in Dallas and after the AV’s snagged him, he’s starting to look like the 1st rounder Dallas thought they got. Didn’t love him earlier in the season but he gets better and better every game and has been a huge part of their success this year. I think in a lot of these scenarios, some teams are just a better fit for developing certain players. I think a few years down the line, he’ll make this list.

The Wild didn't "mismanage him by playing him on the wing" or "give up on him too early." They just bought some bad magic beans with him. Burns didn't play a single game for the Wild at F. The Wild didn't trade him because they didn't know his value, they traded him because they were going into a rebuild and thought they could get good value for him. They hoped Setoguchi wouldn't fall off too huge of a cliff from his 30/30 season, and could save some money from the huge contract that Burns would require to re-sign. Unfortunately Seto sucked, Phillips never made it, and Coyle (while very good) didn't turn into the top line power forward he was projected to be.
@RobTalksHockey
@RobTalksHockey 4 жыл бұрын
I mean you’re not wrong, and from the Wild perspective they were saving cap, gaining a great prospect, and Setoguchi who they were hoping to rebound. But this is a mishandle of assets. At the time this trade was concerning, and yes Burns did rotate back and forth from forward to defense. I have read countless scouting reports saying so, which is also perhaps mishandling development. But at the same time, perhaps a change of scenery was needed

Pacioretty/Suzuki. I know Patch is on pace for career year but thats only logical he’s really good player/goal scorer and he never had that kind of talent by his side, now lets see how Nick suzuki will turn out in the next 2-4 years. So far you can see the kid is above average, he’s playing good 200ft game. Can’t wait to see my habs in the next couple of season. Edit: i love content like that, i sub ❤️

Forsberg for Erat and Latta still hurts. Many of us thought it was an insanely poor trade even before we discovered what a washout Erat turned out to be.

That wasnt even the worst Caps trade. We traded a future 700 goal scorer and one of the best defensive players ever in Mike Gartner and Larry Murphy for Bob Rouse and pants dropper Dino Ciccarelli.

you're missing a lot of the reasons why some of these players were traded. Hamilton was largely traded because he wanted north of 9 million dollars of season after his entry-level contract.that was too much for him at the time, he was not putting up those points, and he wasn't going to take Chara's spot as the number one defenseman Teevo had to be added to the bickel deel just to get Carolina to take that contract, add on the fact that they didn't have the money to pay for him on his next deal. You have to really break down all sides of the decisions that went into these trades, and not simply at the players production after the fact.

It still hurts me to see Teuvo in a canes uniform. But i don't think that was giving up on him. The team full well knew how good he was going to be. It was a matter of getting rid of Bickell's contract, and the price the canes asked for was Teravainen. Guess it's the price of winning 3 cups in 4 years. Bickell and Seabrook's contract are a stain on Bowman's work. People have been giving him a lot of shit since the team fell off, but he's been quietly drafting well. But we're still strapped with that awful contract for Seabrook, hamstringing our possibilities in free-agency and trade markets. First Saad (the first time) then Teravainen and after that, Panarin. All that because of Bickell and Seabrook.
