I wanted to see Patrick Sharp on here :) traded very early from Philly to Chicago, became a top six forward sniper and a major contributor to three Stanley Cups 2010, 13 & 15. I lack the slightest clue what Philadelphia got in return, other than being beat in the 2010 finals, in which Sharp scored 4 goals in 6 games.

Interesting story, Jarome Iginla was originally drafted by Dallas Stars, but they treaded him without playing a single game However, they acquired Joe Nieuwendyk for him who helped them win the cup and became play off MVP I wonder how things would turn out if they kept him though.

And Seguin trade wasnt really a shock. Seguin's antics off ice was really creating a rift with management. Something he's struggled with at times in Dallas as well. I mean, didnt the owner call him out last year? Seguin is a great player but too much of a "rock star", has that "me first" mentality. Which sucks because the dude has skill. But I wasnt surprised Boston traded him. I was more surprised at the package they got in return.

I always thought when the Red Wings traded away a young Adam Oates for a well past his prime Bernie Federko. Yikes!!! I know Maclean and McKegney were also part of that deal. Schenn and Simmonds at that time stings because the Kings were building something special before 2012, but in the end i was wrong. Also Carter going to LA somewhat gave them 1-2 Center punch and solidified them as a Cup Contender. In my opinion Johnson was pretty much done in LA and needed a fresh start elsewhere. Two Cups plus playoffs year in year out 8 plus years ago, Not Bad at all. Let's rebuild and hoping we move up at least 2 or 3 spots- Lafreniere, Byfield or Drysdale.

Sundin was a great player, but you insinuate that it was a bad trade. Lefebvre was integral to the 96 cup for the avs, and Clark was traded for Claude Lemieux who was integral to the 96 Cup as well. Lemieux was then traded to NJ (helped them win a cup) for Brian Rolston, Rolston was part of the trade that got the Avs Ray Bourque for their 2nd cup. So Trading Sundin helped net the Avs 2 Cups, Sundin, like all Leafs, no cups. very worthwhile trade.

How about some old-school Red Wings trades (that mostly demonstrate how Jack Adams did more harm than good for the franchise)? Bucyk, Hall, and Dionne all started their careers in Detroit. Heck, even though the Wings got the best playing years out of Red Kelly, he still demonstrated he had plenty left in the tank after Detroit parted ways with him, being crucial in four Cup wins for the Leafs (knocking the Wings out of the finals twice). And Sawchuk had only played 5 full NHL seasons and was at the top of his game when Adams decided to part ways with him. The Wings got him back after a couple seasons and ended up having several more productive years from him, but that initial trade reportedly really hindered Sawchuk's morale for a while. Insane to think the Wings had both a young Sawchuk and a young Hall on their roster, and parted with both of them in the span of a couple years.

The Ottawa Senators traded Pavol Demitra for a guy called Christer Olafson who never played in the NHL. The Senators were pretty stacked at the time.

Quebec/Colorado went on to win in '96 and '01 so I don't think the organization was too sad about Sundin, who ended up wasting his career in Toronto, never winning the Stanley Cup.

We can thank Tom Barrasso for that trade. He was notorious for torturing young scorers who embarrassed him in practice.(Which Naslund did) Tommy B did the same thing to Aleksey Morozov a few years later. Since Tommy was Mario's golf buddy, Craig Patrick kept Tom and by extension Mario, happy. Barrasso was a completely shit human being as a teammate.

You could make the whole video on Mike Milbury/Islander trades. Chara, Luongo, Bertuzzi, JP Dumont. Also, in the Satan trade, it was Craig Millar, not Miller.

Think that if Boston still had Seguin they likely dont sign Backes which means he doesnt get moved to Anaheim along with a 1st round pick and Axel Anderson. Add in they are eating 1.5 this and next season of essentially dead cap space and you get to see how 1 move has some serious ripple effects.
@Seriously_Unserious
@Seriously_Unserious 4 жыл бұрын
Oh the other hand, if you have Seguin sleeping with the wife of another player, think of the divisive crap that would be stirring up in the dressing room. That sort of stuff is deadly poison for a team. Can't blame the Bruins for dealing a player who was being that toxic to team morale and cohesion. Sounds like it was also a wake up call for Seguin to clean up his ways a bit too, so Seguin may have been getting himself into even worse trouble if he hadn't been dealt.
@Yokes27
@Yokes27 4 жыл бұрын
@@Seriously_Unserious Yea i def wouldnt blame any team that handles things that way. Here In Philly you had the Brind'amour-Lindros and Carter-Hartnell situations, St Louis had Shanahan with Craig Janneys wife, Chelios with the Canadians team president and others but i was just more pointing out the on ice pieces and salary cap space that this 1 trade affected.

The only thing I hate about these is its very easy to judge shit in hindsight. Some really promising picks end up going nowhere and some late round picks become stars. You could probably make a "7 nhl teams that wasted too much time on player".

Joe Thornton traded from Boston at age 26. He had already developed when they let him go. Won the Hart trophy with San Jose. Phil Esposito traded from Chicago to Boston along with Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield for Pit Martin, Jack Norris and Gilles Marotte. Phil was 25 and went on to score 717 goals and 1590 points. Islanders traded Luongo as a 20 year old because they had just drafted Dipietro and obviously had their goalie situation settled for the next 20 years. I'm not sure why a team that has already drafted roberto Luongo fourth overall in 1997 comes back and drafts Rick Dipietro 1st overall in 2000. Did they forget they already had a highly touted goalie prospect in the system.? did they just feel they could do without Dany Heatley or Marion Gaborik or Brooks Orpik or Justin Williams? Olli Jokinen was traded from LA as a 20 year old and then from the Islanders to Florida at age 21. He developed into a point a game first line center in Florida and played in the NHL until he was 36 scoring 321 goals and 750 points over 1200 games

Some of the trades that come to mind made sense because the teams got something great for it. Owen Nolan for Sandis Ozolinsh is 1 that comes to mind, Chris Pronger being traded when clearly he wasnt gonna stay anyways and the dying franchise needed a star to fill seats.... But then you look at 1 like Adam Oates, that trade nearly destroyed the Red Wings, who had finally made the conference finals in the late 80s and then went back down a peg till the mid 90s.... Imagine Adam Oates playing his entire career with Detroit. They literally got NOTHING for him, NOTHING, 2 aging dudes that were about to retire. And Oates had like 13 prime years left in him? And went to 2 finals in that time on teams that has never made the finals once in their existance? Yeah. Detroit,,, they coulda won so much more. Common theme in Detroit with all 4 of our teams.

In 1986 Vancouver traded Cam Neely AND a third overall pick for Barry Pederson! When Neely got to the Boston Bruins he immediately became a point-per-game player and spent the next 10 years as THE prototype power forward. Yeah, that was too soon...and too much.
