In the Netherlands we saw the uncut version of the 1987 Robocop. I was 16 at the time when I saw the movie in the cinema. And 36 years later, it's still my favourite movie.

Me to my friend. I'm a year ahead of you at 53 and got a bootleg copy of it and watched it hundreds of times before it came to VHS in the UK. Its a masterpiece and if I had to do the virtually impossible task of naming my favourite film(so many films) I'd have to go with Robocop. (With Bladerunner 2049 an incredibly close 2nd. I rate this so high I think the original Bladerunner and 2049 could almost be classified as one film. Its a sequel we all wanted but never thought would happen or be good but it ended up being incredible.)

That uncut version came out years ago. (Directors cut). The "much gorier" part is a second and a half extra of Murphy getting shot . I don't know how much of the movie was cut in America. But besides that 1 1/2 second, I saw nothing new.

A couple of minor criticisms- Clarence Boddicker and his gang were not sociopaths, they were psychopaths. Sociopaths may have brutally violent characteristics, but some sort of empathy is still within them. Boddicker and his gang were completely devoid of any remorse or guilty feelings for any of their actions. During the scene in the original film when Robocop accessed the police computer databank, each of the gang members had a mile-long rap sheet with multiple repeat convictions of the same offenses. Also, in the torture-murder sequence of the original film, Murphy NEVER pleaded for his life; he called Boddicker "slime," but never once vocalized any desire to have his life spared.

For those who didn't know, RoboCop 2 had a rocky production. It was initially meant to be written and directed by Tim Hunter, who dropped out due to creative differences. Frank Miller was brought in to pen the script, with Irvin Kershner directing. Even then, the script was constantly being revised during production, with scenes being added and dropped as shooting went on. Lewis was originally around to lend Murphy a hand. Nancy Allen has said in interviews that the original script featured her character prominently, but the re-writes diminished her role. At one point, Lewis takes up a collection and visits the OCP headquarters to talk with Dr. Faxx about fixing RoboCop after being disassembled by Cain and his gang. Later, she helps her robo-partner snap out of it after he has a confrontation with his former wife. (Which I'll get to.) There was also a scene where RoboCop and Lewis break into Faxx's office and discover the blueprints for RoboCop 2. During the brewery shootout, Lewis gets into a fight with Catzo, Cain's right hand man. One deleted scene filmed had Cain and Angie visit OCP headquarters, and Cain's encounter with Dr. Faxx, and he stares face-to-face with the gray RC armor from the original movie on display. The original script also dove deeper into RoboCop's psyche. The movie attempts to explore how RoboCop has become more human since the ending of the first, but the subplot is quickly dropped. In the scene where Robocop is pulled apart by the gang, he visions himself visiting Murphy's grave with the scene cutting back and forth of him masked and unmasked in a surreal way. In the novelization that utilized the original script, we get a better explanation for why RoboCop is waging a war on Nuke. Seeing the crumbling state of the city and how so much of the youth is hooked on Nuke has him worried that his son will end up like Hobb, corrupted by vice and crime. The scene where RoboCop encounters his former wife at the police station happens much later in the book. After being told by the lawyers to stay away from her, RoboCop drives to a junkyard to ponder what he has become. "He closed his eyes and daydreamed, seeing himself frozen solid by rust. He envisioned the mighty magnets lifting his long out-modeled, creaky, corroded body toward the conveyor belt. The conveyor accepting the offering without question. The whining, flailing machine nourished itself on Robo's body, tearing it to pieces with rotating, razor-sharp teeth." Fortunately, Lewis arrives to snap RoboCop out of his suicidal thoughts and remind him of who he is. Also, in the aftermath of the fight between him and RoboCop 2, Murphy notices his son amongst the crowd, and does the TJ Lazer gun-twirl to let him know that everything's alright and smiles. There are so many scenes changed and altered that it made the sequel become a middle-of-the-road "meh" movie. You can tell the film had the right ingredients, but someone pissed in the recipe. It's clearly not a bad movie, but I feel it's just disappointing. And I think that hurts more than just being a bad movie; to see the potential put to waste. And the novelization/original script showed that potential. 😞

It felt like the tone was an extension of the first. They just left out the most crucial part like you said - his developing character now that he was "Murphy" again at the end of part 1. They tried to keep some sense of the gratuitous violence.. (the scalpel scene, eye shot through the scope, Cain's rampage, etc) - but Paul Verhoeven is just flat ass sadistic with his violence lol.

Paul Verhoeven said in an interview that he had to make Murphy's death as gruesome as possible so the audience cared about him. We only knew Murphy for about 20 mins and we didn't really get enough time to get attached to him. By making his death so horrific it forced empathy out of the audience.

I didn't get it as a kid but when I saw the original Robocop again, what really shocked me was after Murphy arrested Bodiker for being a "cop killer", that OCP guy, Dick Johnson just makes a phone call and Bodiker is free to roam the streets again. Bodiker was suspected of so many murders but all it took was knowing someone from OCP, a bunch of corrupt lawyer and judges and he was free to go. That's horrifying. That movie really showed what corruption truly is.

Have yet to see the director's cut of RoboCop. I will say it's a good call for Verhoeven to leave out the idea of Murphy and Lewis having an affair. Murphy is always thought of as a good man. And while the affair makes him more complicated, it also makes him that much less sympathetic. We'd likely still root for him, but he might not have become as iconic.

To have this desegregration of gender only to have the two subjects become entangled would defeat the message. If they established the platonic sensibilities of these relationships, first. Like. Show Murphy interract with women and not fall in love with them. That would be a waste of time. But thats how I see it working.

the director's cut of RoboCop, has a couple of extended scenes which shows more gore, like kenny's death and alex's arm getting blown off, and the death scene extended. Not really much more to the film really. If you compare Robocop and Robocop 2, the 1st one id have say has more gore. Yeah the second has a bit of gore, like brain removal and Duffy getting cut, but that's mild i would say compared to the 1st film. But i know a lot of Robocop 2 was reworked and bits cut out sadly.

Robocop, like its predecessor The Six Million Dollar Man, was based (uncredited) on Cyborg a 1972 science fiction/secret agent novel, written by Martin Caidin. One line from the novel makes it in to both Robocop and the smdm "We were able to save the right arm". In Robocop this is answered by "No lose it, we want complete prosthesis" but in the Robocop remake cut scene is given its original reply "Good, you tell a lot about a man by his handshake" Other elements from Caidin's novel found their way in to Robocop, the built in radio communicator, the ability to record data with a camera built in to his eye, inbuilt weaponry and the imbedded tracking beacon. Also oth characters are assigned a female partner/handler who persuades them to stop trying to commit suicide because of a Roman Catholic upbringing and recover their innate humanity.

It wasn't based on that book, Ed Neumeiers original concept was "a blade runner like fully mechanical cop that eventually gets a real human like intelligence" then he met Michael Miner who had similar idea called "Super cop" they work together on a script for months and was more inspired by hitchcocks psycho in Neumeiers words but instead of murphy dying he is reborn, that arm line was thrown in as an easter egg just like the Rom space knight and Iron Man comics. There'd be no point saving his right arm when we saw the shotgun blast obliterate his hand.
@Zurround
@Zurround Жыл бұрын
One BIG difference for me is this: When I saw Robocop I was 14 years old. The 6 million dollar man was one of my favorite shows and I had seen other science fiction stories about cyborgs whose bodies were reconstructed after almost fatal mutilations. What shocked me about Robocop was that these other cyborgs were victims of tragic ACCIDENTS and the scientists who "rebuilt" them cared about them and did the best they could for them. For example Steve Austin did NOT get his one good arm amputated to make him even stronger. But Robocop was the first fictional cyborg I ever saw that was both a victim of -human CRUELTY (murder) AND was just being used and exploited by the organization that "rebuilt" him. That is a huge DOUBLE WHAMMY because you could have a story about a murder victim who is rebuilt by good people who are doing their best to give him a new life or you could have greedy capitalists taking advantage of a "lucky" situation with a tragic ACCIDENT victim. But Robocop was BOTH murder and exploitation. That bothered me A LOT. If his body had been mutilated in a tragic ACCIDENT (like an airplane crash) and making him mostly robotic really was the only way to give him some form of a life even that would be horrific but it would not have bothered me as badly.

@@Njpro cutting it was a mistake. One thing I find interesting about Robocop is the philosophical question of whether or not he is alive. Certain PARTS of his body (including a damaged brain) are BIOLOGICALLY ALIVE but he was declared dead legally. I read a description of Robocop once and it had the philosophical question of whether he is a man, or a machine, neither (some other kind of entity) or BOTH. I think an interesting question is is he alive, is he dead, is he neither or is he both.

The only way it could work is if Murphy had some kind of afair with Lewis, and when he was killed somehow he felt so guilty that in a twisted way he takes the punishment like it's his fate, adding even more an element of his humanity. Showing that he also is flawed like everybody else. But to do that they would have to make a longer first act, and break the rhythm of the movie, that for me is perfect like it is.

In the OG Robocop IMO it wasn't so much of a "gentrified community" being protected but more of how much power, control, and influence corporate America had and was getting. OCP made Detroit a corporatocracy and controlled most if not all the services including the police. The Robocop program was OCP publicly saying they were for law and order but privately they had put controls in place so Robocop couldn't stop them from doing anything they wanted. OCP was the big company that had no oversight or regulation, was a monopoly, actively helping corrupt politicians, supporting the criminals to further OCP goals, and pushing fake news. Basically the movie was showing where we were going if people didn't wake up. I believe that Robocop was also commenting on how far is too far and what makes someone a human.

this is how i would have worked it in to the script. with his new directives, he would think a crime was in progress at the cemetary, only to reveal it was someone digging a plot for a new grave. no telling what the directives were telling him, but as he turns around to leave, he sees alex murphy's headstone. flashbacks of his past life flash before him for a brief moment: his family, his work as a police officer, his murder, and what cain did to him. a new directive pops up on his pov as these memories are flashing-DIRECTIVE 279: SUPPRESS MEMORIES...YOU ARE A MACHINE. As the word "machine" blinks, the pov returns to the headstone. murphy stands in front of the grave, confused, as lewis walks over to check on him. without a word, he turns around to leave as lewis looks on concerned. then cut to the next scene as he unplugs and electrocutes himself to erase the directives. anybody wanna add something else, it would be cool.

0:58 No. RoboCop was NOT the Batman of the 1980's. Batman was the Batman of the 1980's. RoboCop is RoboCop, and the two characters share basically NOTHING in common. I agree with other comments here, that including the pathetic 2014 remake in this video alongside the masterpiece that was the 1987 RoboCop reveals a poor understanding of the franchise, and what makes the original concept truly great.

I recently found out that in ROBOCOP 1987 there was 2 romance scenes unfilmed ROBOCOP at his old house has a POV FLASHBACK of ALEX MURPHY and his wife in bed and ALEX opened her robe exposing her breasts & the scene where he remembers walking into the bathroom while his wife is showering her bare butt is visable for a moment ( an edited version of that is in the actual movie ) which explains the ROBOCOP 2 deleted shower scene

RoboCop one and two should have their deleted scenes put back in as a Ultra director's cut. RoboCop 3 what's a complete disaster that the movie should never been made. RoboCop 2014 also should have his deleted scenes put back in as a director's cut

I wish with robocop they do darth Vader concept They clean his body up Replace his lost limps with robot arms Place a robotic spine that attaches to his back contects to his nervous system and brain Then robotic suit is placed on his body giving him ability to push him self further than any Olympic athlete or any special forces soldier Strength , endurance , helmet gives him every vision type , links to home base His suit with technology can stop every round up to 50 cal Stops small amour rounds To withstand grenades When suit comes off he’s in a wheel chair Ability to hack computers Ultimate cop I always found it sad they cut him up to pieces Have technology to put his body in the robotic suit I like Ann Lewis to happen to be his sister in law He has his wife and kids still in his life Have them create a robo dog for him Have him battle between robot computer in back of his head with himself His car has ultimate attachments in trunk Jet pack His detachable hand has extra firepower he can clamp on Have him and Lewis always had this flirty to themselves They are strictly best friends Have Murphy still can’t live at home so that’s why his doctor saved military dogs life giving him to Murphy So dog stays with Murphy when he’s alone and out in street Dogs system is linked to robocop so dog can’t leave his side and they can communicate with each other through silence

This video needs heavily re-editing: There are way too many remake scenes interspliced into the scenes discussing the original movies. RoboCop 1-3 depict the same character and the same universe; the remake is its own thing.

The shower scene in Robocop 2 was not cut to avoid an X rating. The movie was already rated R; a simple nude scene would not push it into X territory. It was cut because test audiences laughed at the sequence; that's all.

The reason for Robocop 2014 keeping his human hand is explained earlier on when they say the American people wouldn't stand for a robot pulling the trigger. The hand is supposed to address this concern.

About the romantic relationship, I always thought that in the original they might've included a bit of umm hardware that was made specifically for such relationships, it's not an impossible thing they might've done.

I think in the new robocop movie another reason they let him keep his hand was to honor the law that said he had to be a human robot hybrid he couldn’t be a total machine so this was another way they could prove parts of him were indeed flesh and blood.

06:55 Did... anyone that worked on this video actually watch the 2014 robocop? Murphy retains his human hand because the american public (in the movie) would not stand for a robot firing on and ending people, thats why the ED209s werent used in the US as much as anywhere else. Keeping the flesh hand meant that the MAN was firing, not the MACHINE. At least thats how the sales pitch went.
@BellowDGaming

The comical timing and satire on the violence can be all boiled down to dark humor. Clarence before shooting Murphy's hand was aiming Nanananana then Boom, then they all shot him, Joe Cox the black dude when they stopped firing said "Did it hurt?" and laughed, while Emil saying Murphy still in pain dying "Hey he's still alive" is pretty much all that. Then Clarence ended Murphy with the gunshot to the head. Till this day I find Robocop 1 and 2 amazing. Robocop 3 not so much, but that Jetpack is so cool even with bad green screen.

Also, if they left in the scene of him getting all his limbs blown off AND a bullet in his head it would have made it less believable that a part of him survived.

I saw this for the first time when I was about 7 or 8. I was so confused by the guy snorting coke off the womans chest. It was a little ahead of my age. I was pretty horrified by the movie. It's up there with Critters. Still favorites. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Good to know I was not the only seven year old who was/is traumatized by Critters. I can stand the movie. When they show it on TV, I advert my eyes and change it right away. My tryna is largely in part of my older brothers making me watch it and are night, they would unscrew the light bulbs in my room, one would wait for me under my bed and the other would hide in the walls to make scratching sounds. They would even rig the door to not open from the inside. They would make the sound like they were talking like the critters and torment me through the night.

Fuck's sake not everything needs to be a documentary about how you hate politics and the government.
