I actually met a guy recently who grew up on Novaya Zemlya on a military base. An interesting fact about the British Indian Ocean Territory is that the main island Diego Garcia was declared uninhabited, despite lots of people living there. Before giving the island to the USA as a military base, the previous "unofficial" inhabitants were all rounded up by the British military and deported to Mauritius and the Seychelles, and their descendants have been struggling to get compensation before British and US courts ever since.

Mount Athos is actually a pretty interesting story as to why women are not allowed. Basically old Christian monasteries that were dedicated to Mary did not allow women, as to prevent diluting the idea that the land was dedicated to 1 single woman alone. However over time the entire idea of monastic states pretty much died out, leaving Mt. Athos effectively alone on earth with this policy

Going to North Sentinel Island would actually endanger the people that live there severely. No, it's not best for them to "ignore their wishes", we carry many diseases that we are immune to that could outright kill most of them. They're also not an uncontacted tribe. Several islanders were taken away at one point by an expedition in 1880, but then a number of them died and the rest were sent back. There has also been friendly contact with India as late as 1997, with delegations that left gifts for them. However, we were unable to decipher their language, which would be necessary if we want to e.g. convince them to be vaccinated against common diseases or give them any kind of technology, as well as get them to not attack you.

Interesting fact about Wake Island: It's the original San Francisco. You're probably thinking, "How?" Well... The first European to discover the island was Álvaro de Mendaña de Neyra. Just like the city of San Francisco, it was named after Saint Francis of Assisi (it was the eve of the feast of Saint Francis when the island was discovered; it was changed to Wake when Samuel Wake visited the island in 1796). But, the island was discovered in 1568 while the city of San Francisco was founded in 1776...making the island the original San Francisco And a cool fact about Midway: It was not only a naval air station, but it is currently home to the world's oldest wild bird, Wisdom the Laysan albatross. She hatched in 1951 and since then she has laid nearly 40 eggs and at least 36 chicks. Unfortunately, her species is Near Threatened because they're accidentally swallowing plastic and from lead poisoning (due to lead-based paint on the island's structures). Of the over one million that call the island home, nearly all the albatrosses have plastic in their digestive system.

Another difficult to reach location not mentioned in this video is Jan Mayen, an island owned by Norway somewhere northeast of Iceland like 1/3 of the way to Svalbard. Most of the island is taken up by Beerenberg, the world's northernmost active volcano. The rest of the island is kind of a bumpy peninsula of sorts. I'm not completely certain on this, but I believe the only way you can get there is to be Norwegian and pay for a very expensive cruise of sorts. There's more videos on it regarding how to get there legally. I just find it interesting that this decently sized island with a massive active volcano is nearly unheard of, there is not a lot of detailed documentation online about it, at least in the English speaking sites I visited. I don't know much beyond that but all I gotta say is that I wish I was Norwegian because climbing the Beerenberg sounds amazing.

I think it's great that you're using Wikivoyage for this video. It's a great project but hasn't enough visibility and contributors IMHO (nowhere near Wikipedia), but a lot of potential. It could become the ultimate travel guide, but it's not quite there. In many cases, and especially in languages other than English, often not enough detail and not updated enough.
@january1may2 жыл бұрын
Wikivoyage is also hampered by competition with Wikitravel, which is basically the same thing except for-profit and ad-supported. Fortunately for now it seems that Wikivoyage is winning the competition, but the very existence of the split is making things harder for them. I like Wikivoyage, but I don't use it very much, because usually there just isn't enough detail. I hope it can expand further.
@RealGestumblindi2 жыл бұрын
@@january1may Yes; as far as I know, Wikitravel was even the original project, and when it went commercial, basically the whole volunteer community left Wikitravel and created Wikivoyage. Wikivoyage is now part of Wikipedia's non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and Wikitravel is mainly stale older content without a supporting community, but with ads. Still, for a long time, Google seemed to favor Wikitravel in its results, probably because the algorithm perceived Wikivoyage as a "copy". But now Wikivoyage is more prominent, I think.

For the cheerleader part, they send them there cause the NFL knows the troops are homesick in these isolated pockets. The players are too expensive and busy to send (plus they're too risky to send, if they get injured there then the team has to deal with it). So they send very attractive young women who are mostly the cheerleaders to dance and perform for the troops.

~19:12 The only uncontacted WHATS now? The North Sentinelese are definitely not Indo-European - that term refers to a language family that most European and North Indian languages belong to. I can only assume Toycat was somehow under the impression that that term just meant "Indians and Europeans" or something. Oh, and invading an island to give the people there modern technology against their will isn't exactly guaranteed to make their lives better lol, it might just make their lives end if we accidentally carry over any diseases they don't have any immunity to. There are worse fates than living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle on a tropical island paradise, they're doing just fine.

Toycat, the country above Alaska and below Mexico is called America and it's the greatest country ever (and it pretty much controls the whole world). The brits tried to take it multiple times, but they keep failing because we are strong and patriotic here. America hosts many states and most people in the world know about all of them. I'm surprised that you haven't heard of America yet! It even has its own language, American. Brits can't understand our language because of how well polished, beautiful, and thought through it is compared to Inglish. Whenever I mention that we have such a great language to a brit, they instantly look confused because I always forget that not everyone is sophisticated enough to learn Jamaican and adopt it as their official language. In fact, most countries in the world (Philippines, Ireland, Alaska) speak American. This country is just beautiful. I could go on and on about all the great things it has done for the world, such as inventing cars, freeing the middle east from its dictatorship, having only 2 parties so it's simple to vote (even for brits!), building the moon, etc, etc. It's sad that you didn't know about America earlier and it's a real flaw of the world's educational system, but I hope my comment gives you all the knowledge you will ever need! Thank you and please visit sometime! Edit: For clarity, it is a common misconception that America is actually 2 countries, but I think they might be confusing the North and South for seperate countries. I wouldn't blame them. Our accents are so different that they're practically their own languages.
