I Live in Abu Dhabi, The United Arab emirates, and my father works in Dubai (so a 2 hour drive there everyday). During Covid, there were actually physical borders between the two emirates, because they had different Covid restrictions, so you needed a negative Covid test report to enter Abu Dhabi. It meant that my dad needed to take a covid test every 2 days in order to come back home. Each emirate even has their own brand of airline. Etihad for Abu Dhabi and Emirates for Dubai. That's why little people recognise "Taiwan", as it lays claim to the entire island you must support that as well, and ignore PRC's legitimate claim. The islands to the north of Abu Dhabi (Dalma, Sir Baniyas, and Abu Al Abyad) belongs to Abu Dhabi and should be yellow, and the Dubai exclave of Hatta to the south of Ras al-Khaimah isn't even the same color as Dubai. Heck, there should be a triangular point pointing towards the west next to Hatta because it's more than just an exclave of Dubai, the place next to it (Masfout) is an exclave of Ajman. The pope of the time was from Castile & the knights of St Johns we’re back in Rome after the seizure of Rhodes by the ottomans. Only 8 years later the pope decided to grant Malta to the military order. However, the papal state decided to lease the land for basically $1 a year So the military order of Malta doesn’t technically own Malta lol Occupied by napoleon & have never attempted to be recognized in a massive scale since then

What if, because we can get computers to do it now, instead of countries being thought of in immediate spatial sense, we make a list of like 150-200 uhhhh parameter thingies like Group A, land within 75km of ocean, group B, land classifiable as desert, group C mountainous And then Land 76-200km from ocean, land near a sea or great lake or bay Land at sea level, land at _____ above sea level And so on until every beach in the world is one country, and there are 150-200 "countries" with similar concerns based on geography, climate or whatever. Because what if we did cultural things online and in church or whatever and this was a totally separate thing from nationalism or patriotism, which would be a thing that reminds everyone that we live on a planet and if A bombs B bc of a mean tweet, the bees will die and then we're fucked. Maybe there would still be war, river dwellers vs hill folk, I dunno But at least then we would definitely know that humans are no good and Earth is well within her rights to shake us off like a Taylor Swift ex

When the government of an autonomous entity is a monarchy it's tended to be looked on as a mini-state rather than just an administrative part of a larger federal state. The United Arab Emirates and the Federation of Malayasia are made up of individual monarchies. The individual states that make up the United States of America are sovereign, but between the United States Constitution and the local thirst for federal funds each state has ceded many of its sovereign powers to the Federal Government. Beside the USA, a lot of republics call themselves "federal", but the provinces and states that make up such republics usually have pretty feeble powers compared to that the central government, and nobody thinks of them as mini-states.

I have now just realized how remarkably bouncy this man is throughout this video. I'm unsure if he's just super excited or really needs to pee

Here in the faroe Islands we have our own currency, flag, language, culture, economic policies, unique landscapes etc. But not a country. I imagine there must be a lot of places like this in the world that people just generally gloss over.
