Excellent video Stan. I always turn the skid steer around, rather than back up. Especially if your listening to the radio, this way no one can be in your blind spots. I was plowing a sidewalk with a Bobcat 843, which has great visibility, at a bank. A little girl was walking her dog and went behind me, she had her jacket unzipped and I saw the tail of the jacket blow in the wind, which caused me to stop. She bent over to pet the dog while they waited to cross the street, I was a few feet from running them over. Shook me up so bad I couldn’t work for 10 minutes after that, I was nearly crying. Spin around, tires are cheap.

For a new pickup driver. Plows down coming into the lot. Don’t ram snow piles. You’ll break the truck or plow eventually and probably get stuck constantly. Carry a shovel and a bag of salt in case you get stuck. Don’t immediately call me to pull you out unless you’ve tried everything. Then we’re both down because of your screw up. Adapt to the conditions. A heavy snow often takes shorter pushes so you don’t overwork the truck. Keep an eye on your gauges. Especially in heavy snow. Every movement is done with a purpose. If you’re not feeling even a slight sense of urgency while plowing, you should be. If you’re not sure how to plow something ask! Don’t aimlessly wander around a lot.

My one piece of advice. If you are in a plow truck or a machine with mirrors, DON'T rely on mirrors. Physically look behind you if possible to avoid backing into something or somebody.

now days get a camera for the back. always use it. they have wide angle camera like db power. you can wifi connect it to a old phone what i do. can run power to the camera inside a water proof case. 60$ with a old phone everyone seems to have you can have a bad ass back up camera. we mounted ours on top of the cab. so we could see everything behind the truck and see how much salt was in the box :)

Stach, I have been plowing since 1976 [started shoveling for my grandfather then learned to work the power angle plow then to drive the truck and work the plow from his lap). I have had my own small plowing business off and on (due to moving and lack of time or equipment). I never learned any other way to bid jobs except by the push (that's the way my grandfather taught me). Over the last 5 years my one man residential business has grown and I have gotten into small commercial businesses and was charging by the push, not making money when the snow didn't fall. Your videos have opened my eyes to contracts. Seeing all of the new equipment out there and your crew has been awesome. Keep up the great plowing videos, even us old pushers can learn new ways of doing things. Thank you and God bless.

I am continuously commenting thank you on stans videos. Im a noob to plowing 2 winters with my own truck. This year was my first winter making some of the gas money i spent back. All these videos greatly help improve me. Even the little things. Your never to old to learn something new. I was a union sheet metal worker and life turned upside down now im a property manager of a trailer park and am always learning. Currently plowing i have a number of driveways acounts that makes a small amount and i plow all the clean up in the mobil home park after a contractor crew comes in with 3 trucks. They come when the storm is over enless its a noreastern. So i just plow keeping the lanes open through the storm and than after the crew comes and goes all the tennants cleaar off there cars and walks right back into the roads making it look like it was never plowed smh. Than i do it all again. Next year i have the whole acount to myself outside of my usual salary so i have alot to learn on billing and only have a short amount of time to get a second truck. Any one have any advice on billing. Im currently doing research on average snow events each month as fare back as i can find so i have a basic idea. But what do most companys do? Monthly or flat season rate? And for my first year would it be worth me buying the sander for ice control or is it recomended to sub that out?
@christinebuelow6616
@christinebuelow6616 5 жыл бұрын
We have lots that we do yearly, hourly, by the inch and for each time plowed. If you get a sander you should have a stockpile of material and a way to load it. So that would be a bit of an investment. Buying salt now is hard, some places are running out, we still have enough stockpiled.

Talk with the service technicians at you equipment dealer. Find out what issue come up with your brand of plow and buy a few spare parts. Every brand has a week point and they will know it. Make sure you keep the parts in the truck and the basic tools you will need to swap them out. Also, make sure to have the proper fluid with you. A new hose doesn’t make a plow work when all the oil is on the parking lot.

I subcontract to a company and on occasion I will get sent to new sites. Either to help finish up or to do an entire new property. The first time I’m seeing it it is snow covered. It helps to use a map app with the satellite feature to look at the property. It shows some of the hidden areas or where a sidewalk may enter into the lot. 2) If possible always push piles to the lowest point in the parking lot. When they thaw, you limit the area of refreeze. Since the water is already downhill

First year guy here. My major lessons for me have been or my added advice. 1- get the equipment ready before you go out if you can- check oil, check lights, clean the windows especially, grease where needed! 2- learned the hard way but.... scope out areas before the first snow, learn if there are any obstacles to possibly hit, way way harder to do when it’s snowing or the ground has snow already 3- if you can make sure to start everything out as as wide as possible the first few snows. In MN we have had so much snow we are running out of places to wing it so we have to blow more. 4- if you are in a truck, stay away from the loaders or other equipment with less visibility, make their life easier. Tap the horn if you have to sneak around them or something like that. 5- get sleep when you can, long days are gonna happen 6- keep your phone in the glove box... 7- if possible start try and start early and areas that get the most congestion before traffic comes 8- have fun but keep busting butt! Oh and rinse the equipment down! Salt is a killer!

keep your eyes on your mirrors, look out your back window (your eyes dont lie) dont rely on back up cameras, watch for parked cars, poles, curbs. Pile your snow at your sites lowest spot so that come spring the water is already at the low point and not flooding your site. The only way you can learn is by being hands on, you can watch a million videos but until you go out and do it for REAL it all starts to make sense. Work from one side to the next pushing bulk piles, then clean up your wind rows, always have shovels to help when your stuck ( it will happen even to the best of us ) have straps in case your plow breaks so you can strap it up and drive it to be fixed, and always have a buddy you can call in worst case scenarios, just a few starting tips lol cheers from Canada

We run 1 backhoe with a snow pusher and 2 Bobcats with snow pushers and 3 trucks. The one thing that sets us apart is we used to run 3 people to do side walks and we took it down to one and we put then on a fourwheeler with a 48in plow and it's a life saver.

Always look around the pillars at each side of your pickup when turning. It has happened to me where I almost hit a pedestrian with my plow cause as I move forward and turning at a traffic light the pedestrian was walking across the street. His walking speed and my position caused the pillar to my left to hide him. I never saw him. It was my wife next to me that yelled out. It scared the crap out of me and I felt so horrible. Really I did I still kick myself for being so careless and distracted. Plowing snow may look cool and fun. In a lot of ways it is. You must have a rubber neck and look everywhere as you drive. To all pedestrians: PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM HEAVY EQUIPMENT. ALWAYS MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH THE OPERATOR BEFORE CROSSING BY. Your life and the sanity of the operator is not worth the 5 seconds you will lose by waiting.

I’m new to owner/operator but have 20+yrs plowing in Canadian winters. My few bits of advice would be - 1 don’t try to get too big too fast. 2 only buy what you actually need - I see way too many guys plowing residential with 9-10ft V plows when a 8ft strait blade is plenty, cheaper to buy and maintain and gives you move maneuverability. 3 don’t take on more work then you can handle with the equipment you have. 4 wash your equipment frequently so you can see if anything is wearing or broken ( also carry spare parts, fluids )

I actually have a tip for shovelers. Dont get cheap shovels they will just be a pain in the ass. Get "the snow plow" shovels, it's a brand that makes premium shovels and they work way better than any cheap one. They are sturdy and they wont break easily. And its always good to have one pusher and one scoop. The pusher is mainly for light snow and cleaning up snow blower lines. I have been on a shovel crew for one year now and I dont know what I would do if it weren't for those nice shovels.

Plow advice 1- take your time! Come up with a plan first then execute that plan 2- if you get a chance to check out your lots before it snows 3- don't rush! If you rush around and start braking things (equipment or property damage) your night will be a lot worse then iF you just took your time! 4- THE SNOW WILL END! Don't get over whelmed! The snow has to end sometime. Take your time and you will get through it! 5- have fun out there!

My grandpa plowed his driveway with a 2wd backhoe. It was a 68 john Deere. Had a cab no heat. The cab was homemade. When I first started plowing snow it was just my parents driveway. Dad always told me to drop the plow when I stopped to do something or was done for the day. When I had my Silverado with a plow I would always drop the plow. Even my Craftsman tractor with a blower I drop it when I stop or am done for the day.

I always carry a shovel in the truck even if I don't need to shovel. It's a nice wake up when you've been plowing for 12+ hrs to get out and shovel for 15 minutes. It's not IF you're going to hit something it's WHEN. Spend enough time in the drivers seat and it's bound to happen eventually. Just use your mirrors, back up camera, parking sensors (if they don't freeze first) and always look 3-4 times. Don't be afraid to get out and asses a situation, before an accident happens!

Top three: Take a look before you start, look around (while working) and pay attention to your surroundings (both when working and before and after.). In Norway we normally go to take a look at the job site before we start. This is to get an overview over the area and how it looks like. What are the obstacles? Are there cars parked here all the time? Curbs? "Islands" on the parking lot? Stupid manhole covers that sits above the surface, so your blade will catch? If you take a look before you start, you will have a much better day when starting, because you have an idea on what to look out for. Where I live we have a parking lot. Easy right? Well the parking lot, yes. The road down to the parking lot? Not so much, because on one side, there's a brick edge that make the flower bed and the edge of the garden. On the right side, there's a stone wall. Stones from nature, not granite blocks or anything, and these rocks and granite rocks are quite easy to catch your blade on, which the guys who plow has done, on multiple occasions. If they had been here before the snow came and had a look, they would've known what it looks like here and avoided the edges and rocks.

Plow Stakes or Flagging of Curbs or Obstructions. Plowed for a Excavation Company in a CAT Loader with a big pusher. Being able to know your radiuses and where curbs are at. Also if working in tandem a loader and truck making sure communication is consistent throughout your route. Equipment maintenance such as fluids and grease often as well as spraying down equipment helps with the longevity during your season. And as always SAFETY!

I owned and operated a sweeping company for 20 years parking lot sweeping. People going to work is the most dangerous time. Everybody is on true course half asleep they go through the routine without knowing anything that's going on around him from going to the drive-through the coffee 7-Eleven. They take shortcuts through the parking lot on their way to work and they park in the same parking spot every day. My experience is they have absolutely no idea what's going on around them. Although parking lot sweeping might be worse as far as the entryways go most parking lot sweepers you have to drive the opposite direction of the traffic to use the gutter broom they have no idea what you're doing except you're going the wrong way LOL thanks for an awesome video ldr

To newbies depending on time. I've learned to make every pass count.do all entrances first push it in make couple passes. Cause traffic picks up fast.all business look at you either thanking you or thinking where have you been. Keep at all times for cars your coworkers you only need to hit one curb or man hole cover to pin point all of them.dont leaves any wind rows. Go to bed at nite get lots of sleep if possible . When I was plowing at nite during the day I installed flooring. Boy that got old.But after plowing it's back to the garage. Grease every zerk go over entire truck,dump, loaders backhoe. Etc..Help out around the shop keep the fire going grab a broom.Your boss likes that.Over all keep your head on straight. Focus on your job not your cell phone.etc. Your guys look professional. Be professional. Look the part. If not well there one last peice of equipment to use.A number 2 backhoe.. A Shovel.. Happy plowing. Jerome.

i dont know if you or anyone else has done it before, but your advice ro recommendations on clothing for staying warm, and dry, woudl be great to know... gloves that can hold heat but not be too bulky, what sort of socks or combination of socks you would wear so your feet stay warm, dry, and comfortable etc... ive been out in -20º temps with even colder wind-chills and i have a pair of leather gloves with thermal liners, but even then, it may not be enough i feel. being up here in Vermont, i know all about winter and the cold, but im no professional out in it all the time for work and such, so i figured you and your guys would have a better idea of such things that work for you, or other advice (especially for guys not in heated cabins either lol, poor fellows) but aye, i love to watch videos like this, since i snow-blow my driveway with my tractor mounted snow blower, but without a cab i need to dress up a bit, and i dont think ive quite got the right set up yet (for being out int he cold that is, i love my tractor haha) anyways... ive been imagining a self contained heated "space-suite" like all in one sort of thing one could wear over normal clothes to stay warm and dry, but since that doesn't quite exist yet far as i know except For astronauts, well, knowing the best individual pieces of kit would be at least second best lol.

MPO -millions of truckers, shippers,receivers all rely on cb radio. All radio is designated through the fcc. Including trains, ships, airplanes. Pick a channel not being used much, don’t conduct business like buying or selling stuff. Keep it at the factory 4watts. Nobody owns the channels,so don’t hog them.

@@wildfire53575 Lol... Almost every trucking, earth moving, construction, etc business has a CB. What are you talking about? And if there is some crazy law, it's obviously not enforced, so the advice for CB radios still stands.

My advice is always push your piles up as much as possible. Everytime I have through it was going to be a light year. I have had to haul snow away. I bet we all forget what we actually keep in our lunch boxes. I have 3 sandwiches, 4 bottles of water, a pot of coffee in a thermos and coffee cup. A few energy bars and other snacks.

I plow a bigger lot with just one loader and a pick up who drives around and never drops his plow, then I drive about 8 miles away and do another big lot but other than a half dozen light post they are long pushes, I try like hell to be gone by dawn because I hate stupid people and have no problem telling them they are stupid, one guy actually got out of his truck and when I climbed out he jumped back in and left, I did get called on for that one .

Look at the reservoir with the red fluid and check if your low on fluid .Because not enough fluid won’t push the hydraulics down especially with the quick connects leaking

My piece of advice would be, if you don’t know something, ask. If you see someone plowing and you don’t know why they are doing that work. Ask them, the more perspectives you can get on the job. The better off you will be, they may see the parking lot in a different way. Their way may help you see a new way to plow and help you become more efficient.

1- Work Smart not Hard 2- Learn your properties. 3- Have a plan where to push and stack snow. 4- Don’t push piles on sidewalks. 5- Don’t block Handicap access ramps. 6- If you Don’t Know, ASK Someone who does. 7- Should you have an incident, REPORT it immediately. 8- When arriving on site, if entrances are plowed over (usually on major highways where state plows have been) Don’t try to push through in one pass. It can be rather difficult on a heavy storm, knocking the pile down can save a lot of unnecessary stress on you truck. 8- Push snow to the lowest point. If not, you are setting yourself up for ice over problems. 9- When you offer Snow Removal in your “NAME” or services, make sure you distinguish which service you are performing for your customers. (I know an individual who didn’t and was sued by a law firm and lost everything because of this. 10- Charge your customers properly, Yes there are hacks out there who charge cut throat rates to get and steal business from the professionals out there. If you are carrying the proper insurance, have the properly maintained equipment, have a staff on call each and every storm, Don’t make it so you end up using your saving to stay in business because you under charged for your services.

All great advice, but could you make a video that includes information such as; how to bid snowplow jobs, who to talk to(HOA, Business park manager, etc), do you get paid by the hour, by the piece of equipment on the job, by the job, are you hitting the same places at night and during the day so twice a day if needed? How does pay change if you gotta hit the same lot twice in a dat due to heavy snow? Do you offer salt/sand dispersion?
