ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Getting an autism diagnosis is advantageous to most people because they can access help and support where it is needed. If you are wondering how to get an autism diagnosis, this video is for you.
lots of people wonder what the autism diagnosis age limit is, but there isn’t one. You can be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at any age and at any point in your life.
There are lots of stuff to test this like the NHS autism test, or a private autism test for child. But the best way is this way I have found in this video.
No matter if you are looking for how to diagnose autism in adults or wondering am I autistic, this video helps cover.
Having Aspergers Syndrome myself which is an autism spectrum disorder I found these steps the best way to getting a diagnosis.

I'm looking into getting a diagnosis and I'm feeling extremely nervous about the whole process. My entire life, I've hidden these "quirks" (which is exactly what I call them too!), even from doctors, just because I thought they were irrelevant to my mental health. Until I started looking into support for ADD, I had no clue what autism really looked like, and I found a chart showing the parallels between ASD and ADHD: and I fell almost perfectly into both categories. I'm so thankful for this series! Its giving me some confidence

All my life I knew that I was different. From my struggles in schools, terrible anxiety of public speaking, lack of social skills to maintain relationships, to falling into structured routines that made me feel "safe", I knew that I wasn't like everyone else. I couldn't be thrown into anything, I always had to prepare. I'm very detailed and organized, having to do things step by step. Throughout my life I've had individuals criticize me for being too shy, not trying new things often, always working alone, talking over them, or walking away in the middle of conversations that did not interest me. I struggled with finding the right and most appropriate things to say when put on the spot. I didn't like going to the movies because I would always have to ask my husband what everything the characters were doing meant. I would talk his head off about what I was thinking and realize I spent a whole hour talking. I have always been the type to write out my responses first to make sure they made sense. I would find patterns in everything. I sketch realistic portraits and learned to play the piano by ear. My children used to ask me why I listened to the same songs on repeat everyday. I could not stand having soggy/soft proteins! My meats needed to be burnt, my fish sticks crunchy, and my eggs not runny; and I couldn't eat bread without crust! Certain smells drove me crazy! I think I could go on for days about the weird things I like and do, but I think the biggest struggle I have is making and maintaining friendships, but I prefer being alone..I'm not officially diagnosed but I know I'm on the spectrum, and I attempted to have testing done last year, but I don't think the psychologist was not taking my claims serious because I'm in my 30s now..

I knew I was "borderline autistic" since I was in my 20s. I could see it in myself, in the way I interacted with people and (sort of) formed relationships (which were NOTHING like the firm friendships I saw those people had with others). Since my therapist, without me bringing it up, began focusing on autism, I found out more about what I learned was called "high-functioning" autism, and realized more and more it all applied to me. Finally, when the diagnosis was made official, it was like the weight of the world had lifted off my shoulders. Finally I had, officially, a name for what was going on with me. My therapist did at one point say that I was "VERY high-functioning", but has always confirmed I'm on the spectrum. I refer to this as my biggest problem. I can often pass for NT, but then when the autism surfaces, in some ways it's even more of a problem. People can't understand why I sort of hit brick walls in what I can do. (Then there's the well-meaning ones who say "Oh, no. You can't be autistic." Yeah, thank you non-expert for your opinion.) Videos like this one give me some solace. There are other people like me and I'm not alone in the stuff I'm dealing with. Thanks, Dan, once again for having this channel.

what does it mean for you, being "borderline autistic"? I find a lot of these traits in myself, but at the same time I've gotten so used to having to adapt that I don't know if I'm actually on the spectrum, or if I'm just like neurotypicals just that they've learned to adapt better. It's as if I've got the traits, but mild enough to not be able to identify in it properly. I do want to go check with actual doctors, but as a student I'm more focused on saving money rn, so I'm just looking up information online.

At the age of 53 I received a diagnosis about 18 months ago, however I think that this was a pretty easy diagnosis despite having loads of previous input from mental health services it took a new therapist to very quickly identify the need for the assessment. The issue I have is, since the diagnosis actual support has pretty well been withdrawn. Adult mental health services taking a back seat and the ASD service being worse than useless, leading to me making a complaint and then being discharged after my missing an appointment with the very person I had previously made a complaint about. I know that this is only my experience and others will have very good things to say about the services they received, but I am left feeling that all the input is on diagnosis with nothing in the way of support after. I hope others have a better experience.

Learning more and more about myself, and the wiring of my brain. Life after the military showed me that I obbsessed with the lifestyle, even after discharge. Almost as if I was brainwashed. During my childhood I displayed extreme educational adaptability, but at the cost of social interaction skills. Through grade school, I kept to myself. I viewed school as a place to learn more, not make friends. I still practice this while in Uni today. I watch others, and I mimic how they socialize, because it's totally alien to me. It always has been.

ADHD is autism and not in attention cerebral cortex . ADHD is an executive function disfunction Forget the lines being drawn in the sand regarding The autistic spectrum . This was developed as a tool that an individual will fall into the spectrum wherever they fall in. This may not be a permanent place on the spectrum that you stay In most cases you will change and that is what it is designed to do . People who are involved with KZbin are my best resources. By listening and chatting with those who are newly diagnosed and or had support . I have never been properly diagnosed and or treated for a severe disability that today is also the reason for most of my health issues that are continually deteriorating today. I failed grade one and was forced back into kindergarten. There was never doubt they just did not know what to do about it. I am developmentally delayed by the exact definition of what is developmentally delayed . I was on my own and went much further than they ever gave me credit for achieving . I am intelligent but I can not fill out a job application form . I do believe that if today I was in school I would have achieved a much more rewarding life . The autistic spectrum is one tool the only lines are at one end or the other. People are using old terminology because it’s just easier to explain it that way . If there are boundaries Then the model fails those it is diagnosing . They have not yet decided where they are going to draw the line that will disqualify people from being disabled .

Another valuable, clear and epic piece, Dan! Another piece of advice is for folks to not leave it too long before getting the diagnosis. I had no idea that what I had for decades was actually High Functioning AS. I did all of these things throughout 2014 with the help of my fiancé (RIP - he passed away two years ago) - he contacted an associate group of the NAS and they were mega, mega helpful! My GP fought like a terrier with the Manchester NHS CCG to get funding for my AS diagnosis - when they dug their heels in, she bit their ankles. My parish priest listened to me and supported me throughout this process and beyond when I could not tell my family what I was doing. After my diagnosis was confirmed, it felt like I just had major surgery.

I was diagnosed in the 1950's because I was nonverbal till the age of 5. In the 1990's I was evaluated by two psychiatrists and told I am still autistic, there is no cure. I went on my own to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School psychiatry department where they were doing a research project. There I was given three days of tests, including WAIS, ADOS-g, ADI-R, and many other tests. Some tests I made 999th percentile or 145 while others went lower, one all the way down to 78. I was able late in life to finish my PhD in applied math and mathematical physics, but I can't negotiate the job market. For instance, I applied for a free training program to repair HVAC and my A's in statistical mechanics which thoroughly cover the thermodynamics as it applies to how heat pumps work and my A's in electromagnetic theory which I can apply to electrician work were not good enough for me to qualify for the training. I need some part time work to make it on social security. I have never been able to coexist with commercial culture, e.g. top 40 pop songs, sports, soap operas etc. and the reason I did a PhD was to neutralize people around me criticizing me for failure to conform, calumniating, "What make you think you are too good to attend the country-Western music festival in the baseball stadium instead of going to the opera house?" A PhD gives me an answer to their question they can't rebut. I taught math at a university for 3 years but I had a boss who believed because I am autistic I should not be allowed to control my money, he started stealing from me and nobody could help me. He made this a bribe for renewing my contract till there was so little left I had to quit. I have very structured eating habits and weight lifting habits because I do not want to live in the kind of body pop culture has to offer; I protect myself from growing a beer belly and sarcopenia. I wasn't officially diagnosed until my 20's at the behest of my wife. My whole life I knew something was off and tried to look up why and how to make up for it (body language books, etc). I had to look up my old medical history. It turns out that I had therapy at a young age buf my family not only stopped it despite the doctors saying I should continue. Growing up when I asked what the therapy wad for or why I'm different, they would blow it off. In short, they hid it from me and abused me when I showed symptoms. I don't speak to them anymore.

I've started to try to pursue a real diagnosis, but there aren't many resources in my province(Canadian, woo!) for Autism at all, much less for Adults. Hi Dan, love your videos - they are very informative and inspiring. I am 54 with wife-diagnosed ASC (probably). After a frank talk I did a lot of research (my new obsessive interest) and compiled a list as you suggest and I did the AQ and other tests; the EQ one was particularly depressing - these all confirmed my wife's concerns. I eventually went to my GP - who questioned why at this time of my life I wanted an assessment. Good question! He gave me a pre-screening form (a cut down AQ test) and after completing it, a month or so later I received more detailed forms from mental health services. I was told that there was a 10 month waiting list for assessments. I returned the completed forms (and my list) in March and am now waiting to hear back.

I was diagnosed at 2, but haven't found out what it was until I was 12. My mom told me when I was 8, but she described it as my brain is wired differently, which made me think every brain is wired differently from each other. I felt like something was off about me when I started middle school, outside of special ed, and these girls were befriending me. They weren't mean to me at all. I was very shy around them. I realized they communicated very differently from me and I would constantly feel stuck and unintentionally withdraw from them. I thought there was something wrong with me, until I saw my IEP document that said I have a disability. My disability was "Autism". I wondered what it really meant, so when I unintentionally isolated myself from my mainstream peers, I looked up autism. There was my answer. At the time, I rejected my condition bc I couldn't figure out a way to cope with feeling different from my classmates. But, the older I got, the more I see that typical people have their own perspectives and I can have my own, too. I stopped pleasing people and feeling sorry for myself. Yet, I feel sorry for them, bc they make things so complicated for everyone else. They say be yourself, but they don't want you, too. My mom does this to me, a lot. I stopped loving my own sister bc she doesn't care about me.

I first signed up for a diagnosis in September. I spoke with my doctor who recommended a psychiatrist to me. The psychiatrist saw traces of autism. So he recommended me to a psychologist. I had a screening at the end of January with her. I had to speak with her for an hour. And then I had a 2-3 hour test I had to complete. I "finally" got my results back just yesterday. It came back that I am moderately autistic. It also showed up that I have a bit of paranoia and some schizophrenia. They said it stims from the autism. And on top of that I also have high anxiety and a bit of depression. I will be 35 this summer. So its nice to finally have an answer. I've been meaning to get a screening for a few years now because I felt something was different about me. Its quite the relief to finally know what it is that is different. Also thanks for these awesome videos. I really enjoy watching them.

I just recently got a psychiatrist and I’ve only had one appointment, but she told me that she’s seeing some symptoms of Aspergers. She told me to do my research and come in for another appointment whenever I’m free and when I researched it, I think she was right. Now I’ve been paying close attention to small things I do when I’m anxious and I’m keeping track of it for my next appointment.

At least you work..im almost 30 and never worked a day in my life i am so sick of people always questioning me why i don't work, idk how to explain it to them. I feel like one believes me or understand why iam not working. Its not because im lazy.. I could never figure out why...im guessing it's my anxiety. It's just something about working that triggers it...i get extremely nervous and avoid even talking about getting a job. Maybe because it involves being social? Or its a change? Anyhow, the thought of it just overwhelmed me, even if the job is something i enioy.

Gena Jaimes I'm 41, diagnosed with Aspergers when I was in my early 20's and I've never worked, I cant work, I am considered "legally unemployable" on some document somewhere in my records. Back years ago when I had tried to get a job, I became so overwhelmed with all the paperwork, and phone calls, and traveling by public transport, I had such a horrible meltdown that I went blind for a few minutes, and found myself in a suicide wing, and I am not even suicidal! Misjudging people just stuffed me in there. I am horrible at interviews, and dont read non-verbal communication, and the thought of interacting with customers and other people terrifies me... and then there are my Fight-or-Flights. No one, no business wants a 250 pound 41 year old flailing on the floor like a baby having a tantrum. I cant hold onto a job because they cannot give me a break in the immediate moment I would need one... I talk too much for everyone else, and I am too loud for everyone else. Autistics usually do not fit in a business world that was shaped to fit a neuraltypical person.

I was fired from 2 jobs for attendance do to chronic health issues and was bullied at my first job. Luckily this clinic job is very repetitive. I’m a dialysis nurse so I have the same patients MWF and TuesThursSat, and it’s very routine. I still have my moments where I want to curl up in the break room, but I’m working on coping skills. It definitely is hard.
@allisonjane913
@allisonjane913 5 жыл бұрын
@genajaimes it can be a struggle. Luckily seeing the patients for so many hours a week and having dialysis be such a controlled environment it’s become very predictable. Job interviews suck. Especially when I was interviewing for jobs this past year. I was told to disclose the aspergers and I didn’t get any of those 3 positions I applied for. The 3 interviews where I didn’t disclose wound up with job offers. I’ve told my manager and couple other nurses because they’ve noticed how linear my thinking is and some of the quirks and I felt they needed to know. When I get off work I spend a good couple hours decompressing on the couch and being anti-social.
