“Enhancing something that is already there” is a great logic when it comes to post processing, most of the time less is more, you don’t do nearly enough editing tutorials, loved this.

Thanks mate I appreciate that. Yeah I've nothing against those that create new enhancements so to speak, I just prefer to keep it simple! Cheers for watching

Nice to see that you keep your edits simple and aimed at bringing your RAW files more into line with the scene that you witnessed and wanted to capture. Too many other landscape photo channels (some quite large and popular that I won’t mention) do so many edits to their RAW files that they bare almost no resemblance to the actual scene they saw and experienced. They add so many global and local edits of every kind in Lightroom, or other editor of choice, that the photo becomes more of a wished-for painting and not the natural beauty of the original scene. I agree with the kind of editing philosophy that you’ve adopted and wished more landscape photographers kept it as real.

A great run-through on Lightroom thanks Henry - I've used many of these tips to better communicate to people viewing my image the emotion that I was feeling! Sometimes the camera provides the raw information but its limitations compared to what the human eye perceives need to be augmented with Lightroom. I will also confess to substituting the odd skyline or two as well, which philosophically does trouble me - but looks great!

I don't use LR, but during editing I use white background to estimate how dark my picture is relative to the full possible brightness. Often when working on a pic this isn't obvious until you view it on a white background (or adding a white frame - depends on the software). Grey colour does not give me that although it helps to estimate the white balance visually. Black is useful to estimate black point visually. Also the frame (border) matters. Some pics look good with a black frame. White frame feels like a window and the photo feels to be inside wile black frame feels like a far background and the photo pops up. Viewing experience can be altered a lot with added frame especially if you would consider coloured frames.

Great tips on post processing Henry! On another topic you either are in the process of or soon will be putting together your calendar for 2025. The 2024 calendar was beautiful, but sadly it was too small to appreciate it on a wall unless you stood right up to it for the view and use of the calendar. Please consider making the calendars much larger for 2025 (or as an option).

More of these please Henry - great video thank you. A top tip for beginners to editing is to hit the auto edit key once before starting - it gives an AI Lightroom suggested edit. Not suggesting you keep it but it does show what sliders were adjusted and can give you a basic idea what elements to work on - contrast, shadows whatever. Just click auto again to revert back to the base image and get editing!

Hi Henry, I’m going to play devil’s advocate today (yeah, there’s always one). I really enjoy your usual style of “outdoor enthusiasm “ videos. There are a thousand videos on KZbin for learning Lr and PS. As far as I’m concerned, your niche is youthful joy in being outdoors with a camera . Hey!, can’t please all of the people all of the time 😁.
@HenryTurnerphoto
@HenryTurnerphoto 29 күн бұрын
Thanks mate! Can't please everyone indeed, I just fancied this as something different as I do get a lot of questions on editing and I do enjoy the process :D

I actually don't mind the occasional editing technique as a nice change of pace. Yes, there are many LR/PS videos out there, but this would be info on how someone whose photography you enjoy edits their images, so it's more meaningful. Only thing I would have preferred is to show the full edit on one or more of the images rather than break it up among several images. There were aspects of a couple of the images that I would have liked to see the process to get there from the raw image.

For the last example you were working with the finished image and mentioned that you probably deleted the RAW image. Maybe you could do a video with some insight on how you handle file management and file naming? For example, do you cull your images and then rename them, at what point would you delete the RAWs, how do you name your edited images, handle “multiples” of the same file like bracketing or focus stacking (in regards to file names, what do you keep/delete etc.)?
@HenryTurnerphoto
@HenryTurnerphoto 28 күн бұрын
I'll have a think about this, cheers for watching!! I don't usually delete my RAW files, especially if it's a photograph I like!

I think you must have your background set up differently, or maybe there's a setting option for Lights Out, but when I've used it it darkens the surrounding panels in two steps until it's completely blacked out - hence the "Lights Out". On your setup it seems to lighten them.

Been that long since i used lightroom as i only edit in Photoshop these days. However there is a common approach regardless of what you use and that is ask 2 questions. What part of the image do i want to edit and what tool do i want to use. Couple of tips in general, first understand what effect on your image your selected tool has and the second is make local adjustments as much as possible as this gives you more control.
