One major thing that I learned was that I can’t get things done around the house if I’m not home. Haha! I try to consolidate all errands and appointments to Tuesday and Wednesday when it is less crowded out. I have my list of errands, returns, and attempt to schedule appointments (hair, nails, dr, dentist, etc) on those days. This is also a day if I want to treat myself to lunch out or a coffee out, I will do it when I’m running my errands. The other days of the week, I stay home and get things done!

A game changer for me has been coming up with a realistic weekly cleaning schedule. I used to just put off most cleaning and tidying because it was so overwhelming even just to start. At the same time, I hated living in constant mess and clutter - made me anxious and I couldn’t enjoy my home. Now I have specific tasks for each day and I complete just those, instead of frantically trying to do everything all the time, and getting nothing done. I do each days chores and don’t worry about other things I notice because I know those tasks have their own day and time. Once I got into the swing of it, the baseline cleanliness of our home had much improved and it took a lot less effort to do each days chores. Also fyi, I set up my schedule to only clean on week days and each days cleaning doesn’t take more than an hour.

I did something similar with one weekend day as well. And if we go away for the weekend, I just spread any chores more important to me throughout the week. It's completely changed how our house looks and feels.

Angie, I wished I had my children to help me around the home. You hit this on the nail, I was a single Mom and I mowed the grass, landscaping, clean the house and do the laundry and I suffered in silence. However, I had a happy ending, my son learned to cook, do laundry and clean the house. He saw me do this and he was able to do all the above and his wife thanked me.

I too was a single mom. My kids were both busy in sports (who knew girls softball was a year-round spot??). I had to do it all and I was exhausted. My kids and I call that time of our lives as “The three of us against the world” because that’s what it felt like. I hated to cook so coming up with meal ideas was a chore, but we finally devised a method of a rotating meal plan and it made a huge difference in our lives. Now that my kids are grown, they have both married chefs! Yeah, I no longer have to cook the large holiday meals! And even though I am now only cooking for me alone, I still meal plan (unfortunately, cooking is still my least favorite chore 🫤).

One thing I don't think we consider is the example we set when we do everything and do not require chores. Without meaning to, we are teaching our children that the mom is the one who does everything. Why would anyone want to be a wife and mother if they know that they will be doing everything for everyone? If I had grown up that way, I know I would not have wanted to get married much less have children. Kids naturally want to help from an early age. If you encourage that by letting them "help" with things they can actually do, then they will keep helping. Why we think we can "run" our homes when even businesses show us it takes many hands to have a successful enterprise, I will never know. Where did this idea of a wife and mother being everything to everybody come from in the first place? The movies? TV? I have been trying to recall when all of that changed. My mom was a stay-at-home mom. When we were tiny, she did do everything. Once we got big enough to do small things, she taught us to do it. By the time we were teenagers, my mom cooked and did laundry. We did all of the cleaning and ironing. She would still do the grocery shopping, but honestly, she had that down to such a fine art that we were in awe of her. Our home ran very well. It was clean and neat and organized. We all had chores that we did daily and weekly. My mom was able to pursue her dream of being an artist. She had time to do it. My dad was crucial in setting those chores firmly in place and ensuring that they were done. We did resent it, but it only took us an hour to clean the house together...vacuuming, dusting, mopping, scrubbing bathrooms, etc. One hour. On Saturday. After that, we had tons of free time. Of course, I have to give kudos to my dad because he made it all seem fun from early on. Then, there was always the reward of a board game or basketball or something that we all wanted. He was a very smart man. (Also, when it was time to do deep cleaning, he pitched in with that, too. Not just spring cleaning, either.) Thank you, Angela. I hope all who watch take it to heart. Life is meant to be enjoyed, too. A balance is really important. Plus, if a child has just mopped a floor, they do notice if someone comes and tracks it up. It makes them much more considerate about wiping feet, etc.)

All members of the household need to be on board with chores and upkeep. However, I hear the message often about how men need to help out more. If housework is kind of an endless task (and one that we are comparing to the perfection of instragram), having in our mind that the men of the world aren't pulling their weight in this area can easily lead to a constant dissatisfaction with our husband and kids. A calm and fair assessment of their input is important.

@@MomJeansReadsnever say never. I didn't think I would, and then I started hang drying our laundry. That turned into drying on hangers, which turned into just sticking hangers in closets.... literally my folding is pulling things off hangers and folding them in half once or twice on the way to kids hampers or my closrt shelf. And just shorts and jeans. And kitchen towels. Thats it.

Asking for help in my relationship...everytime I try he just goes off on how he is tired when he comes home and shouldn't have to do anything. And he should be able to do what he wants on the weekends. He grew up in a similar household. He of the mindset "my way or the highway". I also am an older mom of littles (will be 39 in Sept and my kids will be 1 & 3 in Aug) so it feels crazy.
@groovylolly
@groovylolly 8 ай бұрын
A true conversation not accusatory and not when you are both exhausted. On a weekend on or a day you are both not so tired. Mindsets are hard to change on both sides of he isn't doing enough or my way ot the highway. Compromise is important and not something to be overlooked and determining what is really important on you list. I had 3, children all with 2 years of age each other and routines, and determining what needs to be done now, and what can wait or broken into parts . Generally not the greatest idea to look for people on the internet give advice on the internet. We aren't in your home and don't know nor does the world need to know your business. Plus we con subconsciously be looking for validation for false and POSSIBLY over extreme feelings that aren't logical.
@bitrudder3792
@bitrudder3792 7 ай бұрын
I completely agree with groovy. Choosing your time wisely, not jumping to extreme conclusions (and learning how to help him not do that, or to self correct if he did that), and just really talking about how you feel about things in a non-threatening way can be eye-opening. I've been married for 38 years and while I think both the psych profession and the nursing profession has gone downhill, I really appreciate what I learned about dealing with people. expect the best, treat them as if they have the best intentions in the world, but don't take garbage when it is dished out. Make a note of it, and figure out another way to approach the situation if you aren't skilled enough to deal with it in the moment. talking about how each of you were raised so differently, and a very non-threatening way, and not while you're trying to gain his help or cooperation, can start laying the foundation for him to understand that there are more ways of looking at your relationship than what he currently has in his brain. One of my favorite takeaways from my education is that I never assume that other people do or should understand me. I see it as my job to communicate clearly in a way that the other person is willing to listen. most people are very receptive to this, even if it can get uncomfortable at times. my husband and I had quite a few differing opinions about child rearing. Looking back, he was absolutely right about some things whereas I was thinking that what I've been taught in school I was right, lol. But not every idea I had was wrong - and I remember planting the seeds very early just by sharing information that I found interesting. It wasn't intentional, but I was so interested in this idea that I was reading a lot of books about it and telling him about statistics and history and reasons pros cons etc. and when the time came for that decision to be made I didn't even have to ask him if we could do it. He just said that he has zoomed that we were going to do that… Even though it was completely outside of his life experience. Don't underestimate the value of being interested and entertaining as a way to set the stage for communication. It lets your partner process the information without feeling like he's being told what to do, or how to think. Hope some of this is helpful!

❤🙏 maybe make a family to do list and at the top make a 1-10 scale for each person to circle of how tired they are. Have a family pow-wow and pick the three most important things to each person and set a timer and go get them done. (I know that’s not always realistic but maybe will help with his perception that it’s all stuff you want to do and he’s the only one who is super tired.) it’s a start 🤷‍♀️ Praying for you guys.

I love that you're a mother not a martyr. I have taken an awful lot on myself and quite frankly its too much and my daughter does nothing unless I have a tizzy fit. I work, I volunteer to help distribute surplus food, I have been sorting our house to sell. I've started writing my husband a list he can choose what jobs to do from and that works better. I've found that if I ask him to do something no matter how small he won't do it and will say he forgot. Despite me repeatedly reminding him. He had several days off while I was at work so I wrote him a list to choose from of jobs I know he can do (I didn't ask him to sew the curtains for example I did that around work). He did several things while I was at work. We have so much to do to get the house ready to sell so it really needs to be all hands on deck.
@bitrudder3792

having a fit basically teaches your kids that they don't have to do anything until you have a fit. Peacefully establishing boundaries with logical consequences (natural or otherwise) is a lot less wear and tear on the parent child relationship. that said, making chores a cheerful and matter-of-fact affair can help take the rebellion out of it, along with making a fun plan for after the chores are done. It's not really buying obedience, but rather creating positive feelings and memories around doing chores.

Lol, I have given up on fixing their little piles in their drawers every time I put laundry away. If they mess up it, fine! I’ll tidy it every couple months if I have the time or I’ll catch it the next time they need a new season or size of clothing.

Hi Angela, this is a really good video. Why have you stopped making videos about adoption? I believe you still have more to present, like, THE talk with your children, sure they asked you once why they look different from you? How do you explain it to them? And the twins who look like you and would not probably think of asking this question, how do you plan on explaining this to them? Would be great if you made something about that, how to explain adoption and tackle the many questions that your child might have.

Regarding having the kids help around the house, this is a MUST!! Not only does it help you, it also teaches them not only how to do things, but also teaches them consequences and so many kids are missing that now!! This is why we have so many problem teenagers, because they haven't learned that their actions have consequences when they were younger and they have an attitude of entitlement because they have never had to work for anything. Kids need to learn from a young age that they are expected to help and work for things they want, and that actions have consequences. So many parents do too much for them and that actually hurts them in the long run. If they have to help clear and wash the dinner dishes at a young age, it becomes a habit, helps teach them responsibility and that everyone needs to do their part, both at home and later life. It's an important lesson many kids are not getting and should!! We all have to do our part, and it is easier for kids to learn this young and a little at a time, in order to be successful adults than to have it suddenly thrown at them as an adult!! Let them learn and make mistakes when they are small to avoid the big mistakes later!!

The panty folding story killed me! I had a friend who used to do that AND hand her bras up on hangers! Lol mine are lucky if they get thrown into a drawer😂

Your comment makes me want to hang up my bras.😂 I hang up a lot of my clothing after I wash it, usually after a couple of minutes of tumbling on cold air or warm air if it tends to wrinkle without that. I make sure the shoulder seams are the right place on the velvet hangers so that I don't get those little nipples on my shoulders. A table fan blows it dry and I don't have to Think about getting back upstairs to the dryer to make sure I get things out before they wrinkle. Seems to me that if I just hang up the bras on the velvet hangers immediately, instead of letting them dry on the pull out rack, and fold them later before I put them away… It might be Faster that way. There's no seam to match, No time wasted digging for the right bra for the right top.

I "fold" all the underwear. They're really just folded into thirds then rolled. But, we have bins for the undies and we can fit more in there when they're rolled. We don't have a lot of space for clothing storage, so I have to find ways to fit everything in its place.

I still fold the kids clothing, but we don't have that many. I stopped folding everyones underwear tho. And I only iron about two pieces each. I only have two kids. When I have SO many things to do, I start a new project and push everything aside🙈 usually elaborate baking. Makes me feel like I achieved something. And so I justify not achieving anything at all😬😬😬😬

LOL no, it doesn't get easier as they get older, it just different, then they grow up and you start with grandkids 😁!! Wanna know how to do something easier? Ask a Grandma, experience does teach you a lot!! It is nice that we can share our ideas and knowledge/skills so easily now, we shared before but now you can ask and share ideas with so many more people and learn how to do almost anything online now, so it's so much easier to find the info you want/need!
