*I was wrong* about that statement that most movies are shot in 1080p today *HOWEVER* 10 years ago the 2K statement was true. And most people can't see the difference between 4K and 2K. Just consider the fact that I made the error. Didn't even notice that everything has shifted to 4K.

Thanks for sharing correction on this aspect as I was not quite sure and was about to search for it as a first step after watching your video. To me the crux of what you have said in this video is that it’s more convenient to use 1080p. I can totally relate to it. I bought the Canon R5 with its 8K RAW video as one of the attractions; invested in a $500 CF Express card to use the feature but haven’t used it even once! Thanks to the massive file sizes and the fact that my MacBook Pro with i7 and 16 GB RAM is literally NOT ABLE to process the files!

Hollywood also still shoots in 1080p because when you watch a movie in the theater or on TV there is a minimum comfortable viewing distance where the viewer doesn't want to be any closer to the screen. At that distance regardless of screen size 1080p and 4k look the same.....It's the reason I bought a 70" 1080p TV for $300 on close out when everything was switching over to 4k. I saved a couple of thousand dollars and still to this day everyone thinks my TV is 4k.

These are all great points. I do want to point out an 8th reason that is commonly overlooked: low-light performance. Most cameras work their best in as much light as possible. A camera sensor may be able to capture video in 4K, but the data rate means either the built-in sensor data processor or the card-writing processor may force the sensor to shoot in shorter exposures at a particular frame rate to allow the processor to play catch-up and be ready for the next frame. If you're out in broad daylight, you wouldn't notice this because the camera will have already had plenty of time to capture a frame, making this argument completely moot. But in low light, such as shooting a night scene or walking through a dim hallway, this will be easily noticeable. The camera may boost ISO by a factor of around 2 (if not manually set) and adjust exposure accordingly where needed, which will produce a noisier video, or in the case of maxed ISO, will shorten the time of exposure, making any subjects much darker than desired. While switching to RAW video shooting (if applicable) may help alleviate some of the effects in post-production, that alone will have the drawback of insanely large file sizes. When I learned about RAW video editing in HS, I was surprised to know that just one second of RAW video in 1080p24 could run as much as 75-80 megabytes of storage, and 1080p30 can be 100-115, and 1080p60 can be around 200-230. 2160p60 could be, if I am calculating right (4K wasn't around yet), around 800MB-1GB per second of video.

I have no argument with anything you had to say; however, I shoot a mix of 1080p and 4K. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I shoot with 3-4 cameras. Usually the wide shot is done in 4K internally and on an Atomos recorder. This is because at some point in the show, I’m going to need the widest shot but often during the show I may need to crop in the shot. The other cameras shoot 1080p on the Atomos recorder and internally I shoot 4K. This way my safety (the internal recording) has the ability to punch in. Oddly enough, the Atomos 1080p recordings are much bigger than the internal 4K (10 bit) recordings, but they are much easier to edit. Even 4K ProRes recordings from an Atomos Recorder are easy to edit.

I started with video content creation in 2019 and opted for the Fuji XH1 which was a good hybrid body at a fair price. It was great for a while but now I can feel how fast the tech is moving and I am feeling quite left behind in terms of the latest tech with simply not enough money to upgrade. This is quite reassuring to hear all these points as I have been feeling like my work is not good enough at 1080p. The XH1 does 4K at 24p but it is just not stable enough handheld and so I always end up shooting at 120fps in Eterna or sometimes in Log. I also do Blackbox stock footage and do sell a fair amount of footage in 1080p but wonder how long it will be relevant. Thanks for this video.

Same here. As a fairly new wedding videographer I have learned that 4K is something that requires a fairly high budget to shoot. I shoot on the sony a6300+ lineup and I think If I were shooting 4k I'd need about 30 batteries per shoot. Another thing I've learned is you need either have an extremely fast computer to edit, or a very high amount of time, and patience to edit with 4k. Lol.

I agree... one of the points I bring up, is that now we are seeing shows shot in 4k and the sets no longer sell as real. The set design has to be insanely good to pull off anything out of reality. Everything has kind of a fake vibe to it. I'm trying to find out what cameras have legendary 1080 and there is zero info. As far as I can tell, the Canon C300 m-ii has 12bit 4-4-4 1080... that's the best I've found. On the subject of 24p vs 30p: 24 isn't dead, but it should be. It makes me dizzy. Everything else is 30, 60, 90, 120, etc. 24 looks janky and jittery now. Blame sports, TV, and especially video games. When 90% of what you see is in 30 or 60, then you see people quick panning in 24 on KZbin, it just looks bad... it's not the Cinema folks. Just stop it.
@captureinsidethesound
@captureinsidethesound 2 ай бұрын
How could 24-30fps make anyone dizzy when its based on how we see things in reality? Its actually the complete opposite. You get dizzy when you process more information per frame than what your eyes/brain has adapted to because that's all its need to distinguish differences in movement, color and light. Saying anything higher than 24fps is "better" will not get you far in the film making business because its not only insulting to true professionals and those who made it a standard but also makes you seem arrogant and ignorant.
@MindzEyz
@MindzEyz 2 ай бұрын
@@captureinsidethesound I think you misread. I was saying that 24 is the problem, not 30, 60, etc. The 24 phenomenon is a real thing. Movie sets have a calculator that they use to make sure they don't pan too fast. A lot of people are bothered by it. Similarly how some people just can't handle 3d. Not every person is the same.

A lot of good points - I still love my C100 M2 dinosaur camera from 2014 because it's got a 4K sensor that downsizes in camera to 1080 - really high quality HD and tiny file sizes. I've had a lot of 4k envy lately, but so many choices I'm not jumping ship yet as most my content ends up on KZbin and looks just fine in 1080. It's crazy to me that SD was a standard format for 60 years and then HD 1080 came along and everyone said "This is the future!" - Then less than 20 years later 4k is the standard. I really hope 4k stays the standard for a decent amount of years - the resolution wars are out of control

1080p been the youtube's standard for 10 years though. 1080p wasn't a standard until Blu-ray and HD DVD came as anything on TV before were broadcast in 720p 1080i in very small numbers and most are still doing perfectly fine with analog SD broadcast. In My opinion we should have never abandoned analog TV broadcast. Even today I'm struggling to make use of native 4K on TV and Internet content as only Games and physical home media are the only ones that can reliably provided me that and even so they're not all that amazing like they want you to believe. Forget about cameras for what seemed like 10 years there price hasn't yet came down to affordable levels, sorry smartphones.

I know this video is 2 years old and you corrected one statement but I wanted to point out a few things. When 4k became mainstream almost no one was really editing it directly at 4k. Most would employed a proxy workflow where they would generate a lower resolution video file to edit with and then swap to the full resolution files of grading and VFX shots. This is especially true today when many 4k cameras can generate the proxy files while recording the high res files for example. I got my first 4k camera 8 years ago and I was able to work with the footage just fine on my dinosaur work computer using a proxy workflow. You are correct in that higher resolution by it's self does not instantly mean better quality however if you're working with proper equipment and you know what you're doing it does. 4k video is generally captured a higher bitrate than HD. If you record a shot at both resolutions on the same camera and you crop out a HD section from the the 4k one it will look better than the straight HD. Also due to the way that many 4k capable cameras record record HD footage, the HD video it is going to look noticeable worse. Most cameras these days capture 1080p by cropping in on the sensor or by pixel binning which basically throws away image information in reducing the resolution. Whereas 4k is down sampled from a 6k sensor for example, retaining much more information. If are going to use something like compressor to reduce your HD footage to smaller size when finished editing you can do the same with your 4k footage as well. Even convert it to HD while reducing it to h.265 so in the end it will take up no more space than if you shot it only in HD.

If you're a filmmaker wanting to make short films and industry style narratives the i would recommend you film at the highest bit-rate, sensor quality you can. This will help you preserve you film and allow for a good master you can turn in to festivals or any media distribution center. If you are a KZbinr and or general social media content creator then shoot 1080 if you want and works better for you.
@RugbyPass81
@RugbyPass81 6 ай бұрын
I'd say that's a fairly fair recommendation, depending on what level said filmmaker is at. I'm a documentary filmmaker, I shoot for a range of brands, including national Geographic and I still use 1080 for around 60% of my work. The most recent project included about 120 hours worth of accumulated 1080 footage, about 20 was 4k. Luc Forsyth has alluded to the same/similar as me, as have others. Narrative filmmakers? Probably different, in fact I'm almost certain it's different. Case uses will okay a large part in this decision making process because, for example, a guy who is just starting out, even in storytelling narrative film or documentary, well that person has no place lusting after and debating whether he/she needs to be shooting in 4k, 6k and up, because he or she isn't even at a stage where they need to think about who they're aiming their deliverables at - they have no audience at that stage. If KZbin will be their primary method of reaching people to get their work see and critiqued, 1080 is still going to be more than enough, and more besides. They should be focussing on fundamentals; compelling story/script, lighting, movement, composition or framing, and so on - all the things that actually _do_ add production value to their work. As I told one young student who was asking me if she should make the jump to 8k "the cameras used to shoot Gone With The Wind are dead and gone and yet that film still screens regularly on TV and in cinemas around the world, and will continue to do so for a long time to come. What was it shot on? I can assure you it was shot on something that gave a softer image than even 1080 likely does; Fundamentals first, gear second , lighting and other things are more important than the camera gear you're shooting on. The camera, whilst important, isn't as crucial as the myriad other things you need to take into consideration" I still feel I have given that young lady sound advice.

There are some good points made in this video. If you are a 1 man show, you really need to ask yourself if you can realistically justify shooting in 4K. The investment in 4K camera gear, processing and storage are only part of the cost. How much of your life do you want to spend behind the computer screen editing videos? How much unedited video do you already have laying around that you are avoiding actually editing? Getting your video as close to “right” straight out of the camera can save you many hours of your most precious cmmodity, your time. If you can afford a talented editor or you are shooting your visual masterpiece movie, then sure, shoot 4K. If, however, you are shooting vlogs, reviews, reactions, or interviews destined for the web, then 1080p makes a lot of sense.

Fully agree with you that 1080p is sufficient for many, if not most, cases. Anyway, I disagree with your argumentation of file-sizes in respect to uploading and archiving. Yes, 4K material takes 4 times more space and also processing time in your NLE. But, what really drives upload times is not the resolution - it's the selection of the right (or wrong) codecs and the bitrates. And, for media archival I can only recommend to take advantage of tools such Media Management in DaVinci Resolve. This allows to trim down your projects with all the footage to exactly what was used in your timeline(s). So, for quality reasons, I shoot with my iPhone 13 ProMax in ProRes 422 (10bit) in HLG - yes, the files are insanely huge. But, after the edit and Media Management applied in DR, the typical residual storage capacity needed for archiving at original codec is around 10-15% of the footage shot.

Anyhow, it Makes me glad to know that alot of others are still commonly using 1080. I began shooting weddings just over a year ago. I use an a6500 and an a6300 which are both capable of 4k, but I think I would need about 25 batteries to last the entire day. Let alone the overheating issues throughout a 12-13 hour day of shooting. Netflix doesn’t even accept “4K”. They have specific requirements even to the equipment they allow. Not just any 4K but on approved equipment. We’ve been looking at some decent 4-8k cameras and cameras across this requirement. We’re not filming for Netflix but it was interesting to learn it (certain black magic cameras). We’re starting a KZbin channel and I think there may be value in shooting 4K and then adding grain or noise or whatever in post. But start with a great master and then add effects for the desired result.

I’m getting started in videography, I have an iPhone 15 pro which can shoot at 4k 60fps and it’s fine to upload and edit small reels/videos straight to Instagram and the slow motion is great at 60fps, but I needed an actual camera, so i didn’t just rely on my iPhone, I picked up the Sony ZVE10 it’s a good entry level camera, and in my price range and it shoots in 4k 30fps and I shot a video in this format and wow the file sizes are insane, 60 secs of footage is like 12gb, and it’s just not possible unless I have a more powerful and advanced pc, so I simply shoot my videography at 1080p 50fps, and I can slow the footage and manage to edit it no problems, and it still looks great, and the slow motion editing is great at 50fps, I guess for more Advanced and people who can afford powerful and reliable external storage shoot in 4k. And even though my iPhone 15 pro is technically more advanced and capable video wise then my Sony zve10 it still isn’t a manageable way to answer calls, also shoot all my footage on iPhone, so best of both worlds

There is judder in your report as soon as you are panning the camera. The reason is that you are recording at 24fps. Same judder results when recording at 25 or 50fps, to some extent also at 30fps. Only 60fps lead to a smooth result when panning the camera. Before you say that you can't see this please pan a landscape at a constant medium panning velocity at these various framerates and compare the results.

A slightly odd video. It's absolutely untrue that the majority of films and streaming shows today are captured in 1080p. Netflix, for example, has required 4K capture for the last eight years. And of the most commonly used digital cinema cameras in the last 20 years, only one is 2K resolution - the Panavision Genesis. I haven't seen a Genesis on set in over ten years. Even the Alexa is rapidly being replaced with the Alexa LF. Having said that, I think even bringing up films was pointless because your target audience is content creators, and they have completely different considerations to filmmakers (take Autofocus for example, irrelevant for filmmakers, critical for most content creators). You do actually make some solid arguments for content creators capturing in 1080p, I'd just drop the irrelevant and incorrect statements about filmmaking.

Few things I feel you miss-explained in your video: 1. sharpness While you CAN film at a 1080p workflow, sharpness is a function of the glass, sensor down sampling, and compression algorithms. 2. Computer editing However if you pick a high compression (smaller files) you’ll need a beefier computer to edit. While larger less compressed file formats allow for faster editing (and avoiding proxies) at the sack of storage space. 3. Image Quality/Detail When it comes to image quality in detail, if you film at 4K downsample to 1080p you generally get a lot more fine details in the image then you would if you just filmed with a camera that records straight 1080 P via lineskipping/binning off a high resolution sensor. While the compression does reduce the amount of detail in the final image versus a true 4K video file… It will show blemishes and other facial effects because instead of skipping that detail it’s actually gone and down-res & sharpened as part of the process. There are some workarounds for this, pro mist filters etc. to “soften” the harshness, it’s not straight 1080p is “blurrier” than 4K to a notable effect. 4. Delivery Format Depending on who the client’s final output format requirements should determine what resolution you require. If you are just uploading to KZbin and video quality is not high on your requirements then filming at 1080 P is perfectly fine. But if you are shooting for commercial, wedding, film etc. you will likely still find that they require 4K raw footage as the delivery medium these days. Even if their plan is to downsample from that 4K footage and edit at 1080p. Just wanted to clear up some confusion but I felt your video might cause a casual viewer.
@TSCameraGear

wow, thats a lot of nitpicking, but I appreciate it. 01 say what you want, but 4K looks sharper than 1080p to me. :) 02 yes, h265 files are tougher to edit, but in general 4K clips have always demanded more from my computer to edit. even if less compressed than 1080 clips. Has to do with resolution not bitrate, and also the export in 4K. 03 I agree with this. and I demonstrate it in my 8K vs 4K video. I haven't tested pro mist yet. Been thinking of trying it out. 04 obviously if you are a pro, 4K is a standard these days.and as I mention in the end of the video, thats why I shoot in 4K, for my stock footage. (pro work). :) have a nice day.

@@TSCameraGear Nitpicking yes. but if somoene watches your video and does not understand some underlining pricipals they may walk away with the wrong impression. 1. 4K is sharper, 1080p downsampled from 4K is sharp, 1080p depending on the camera pixel density can end up looking a bit "soft". #2 I guess my point was someone might take what you said in the video that for best results film at H.265 @ 1080p and they might be shooting themselves in the foot i they don't have a powerful computer to edit the really compressed files. #4 I shoot stock as well, 4K all the time and I've had clients who insist on 4K raw even if the output is 1080p.

I watch youtube on my secondary monitor and a Samsung TV, both are still 1080p. I don't notice that it's "only" 1080p unless I use the little gear icon to switch to 4k. Yesterday I tried 4k on my phone and I struggled to see the difference even though the video showed the exact same scenes. On my 1440p monitor it's much more noticeable when switching but it doesn't change whether or not I'm watching the video. I'm sure Casei Neistat is shooting in 4k and his editing is "amazing" but in the end but in the end I'm not watching because his content isn't for me. Marues Brownlee shoots everything in 256k and the production value is amazing, but I'm not buying a new phone twice a day so I'm not watching. He got a production team so for him it makes sense to max out on the technology. Stock footage usually lacks a strong subject so it should be in the best resolution possible and let the client decide what to do with it. Movies or shorts have strong subjects and often use bokeh to separate them from the background, your eyes don't wander as much to look at a blade of super sharp grass in the background. Unless TV's get a lot bigger or we sit way closer it's hard to really see the quadrupling in data and the effort behind it. My Nikon D750 only supports 1080p and so does my computer (I suspect). It can be fun to play around with a short 4k clip but once you fill up your timeline and try to scrub, add effects, transitions, noise reduction, it'll date your computer and your wallet will hide. 4k doesn't make me wanna watch something but bad audio can ruin a video. I'm not listening to hard clipping and wind noises for more than 2.3 seconds :)

Your comment about the Avengers shooting in 1080p is not accurate. There were a few shots in done in 1080p but most of the film as in 35mm film, Super 35mm and ARRIRAW 2.8K downsampled to 2K. I think to compete with film you need a bit higher than 1080p. Film can be pretty detailed, if you get a good scan. And actually I'm reading that Avengers Infinity War was shot in 6k and 8K, so they're only going higher, but they're just not releasing it in that high of a resolution, it's just for the master files. The specs I gave were for the first avengers movie which came out 10 years ago. Maybe using 4K wasn't convenient then, but using it now is more than doable with modern computers and cheap memory. The average person only has the option of 1080p or 4K. With that choice, I think 4k is better because you have more flexibility and you could easily make your 4k less detailed if you needed that for a certain situation.

Not sure if you are taking the Pi$$, but you are right, but for the wrong reasons. If you are uploading to social media you are completely wasting your time shooting in 4k. The real reason why. It has to do with the application compression. Most cameras shoot in at least 100mbps, yes bit rate, not resolution is important. KZbin and some other not so popular apps do support 4k but only up to around 40/50mbps (subject to streaming speeds). Therefore, even from gopro footage 100mbps, the image is over half compressed, other apps are compressing to under 10mbps and only support 1080p. So all that data you are collecting in your super expensive camera is mute for social media. Yes, if you know you are going to crop in heavily, 4k may help. But otherwise, you can't tell the difference between 4k and 1080p after you upscale 1080p. I have done it! Try for yourself if you don't believe me. AS TO BETTER CAMERAS, Yes, a 10-bit image allows you to shoot in log and push the image around more, but this is more an editing aid. It is a lot more complex than just what I have mentioned here, and better cameras do give you a better final Image, but 4k LOOKS BETTER no.

if you check the stat on the video it actually is in VP9. :)

Why not shoot in 1080 and scale up to 4K.

You can go VP9 codec but you must export your 1080 video as 4K. It tricks KZbin into thinking it’s in 4K, so it switches from AVC to VP9. I’ve tested this many times.

@@TSCameraGear it only goes to VP9 in 1080 mode if 1) you export in 4K or 2) you have a healthy subscriber/view base. For people with low subscribers, 1080 automatically transcodes to AVC instead of VP9.

You can shoot in 1080p but then you should upload in 4k otherwise the low bitrate of the 1080p setting on youtube will make the video very pixellated and you can see it very clearly in this video. Watching it on a normal 1080p 24 inch screen.

Yes you can shoot in 1080 like I do, But I upscale to 2160 UHD for KZbin to get much better quality playback.
