Which one is better: 2024 Lexus TX or 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander? Automotive Engineer David Chao provides 7 reasons why he feels that 2024 TX is better than Grand Highlander, even though the TX will cost more. Both models are actually based on the same platform and even built at the same factory in Indiana, but there are many distinct features that are unique to the new TX - including Toyota/Lexus first 3.5L V-6 Plug-in Hybrid. David gives his engineer's perspective on why he believes it's worth paying extra for the Lexus TX compared to the Toyota Grand Highlander, which is also new for 2024.

I personally feel Grand Highlander is a better design and also has the traffic jam assist offered in hybrid max not only in Lexus. Also Reasonable enough to get GH for at least 20k$ less than lexus.

Reason #8: Lexus has a standard 4 year/50,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty, Toyota is a 3 year/36,000 mile (at least here in the USA). Knowing that neither of these will really ever use or need their warranty, the Lexus provides more piece of mind with a longer standard term. Your 4th point is spot on as well. The personal experience and the way you are treated is far superior at Lexus than at any Toyota dealer. Not to mention the Toyota dealers normally mark up vehicles while I have found that most Lexus dealers do not so this alone negates 90% of the price difference when Toyota dealers are marking up their vehicles to almost the same price as a Lexus. As a bonus, the coffee at the Lexus dealerships are always better than at Toyota.

I had a Lexus LS430 ultra edition which I loved. What a smooth ride!! The downside was every time I brought to the dealership for regular maintenance it would cost me at least a $1000. It was always due to the add on to oil change of a scheduled change of say the fuel pump even though working fine. I always knew and expected a big bill. It made me wonder how reliable these cars really were because I was always paying for replacement of parts even though there was no problem. I eventially got rid of it when the air shocks became defective and would cost over $1000 each. I got a Buick Enclave premium which clearly was a drop in quality but rode well and pretty quiet. It also takes regular gas which saves me anywhere from .70-1.00 a gallon with each fill up. After having the car for 8 years I brought it to the dealer as the airbag light stayed on and it needed new brakes. In 8 years this was the first time I spent $1000 on it. The GH takes regular gas but the Lexus TX does not which is a big minus in my book as I have been spoiled with using regular and I think I will go for the with the GH Hybrid Platinum MAX and save thousands not getting the Lexus equivalent. That said I never had a Toyota so don't know if their dealership play the same games of replacing parts at certain mileage even if working fine.

Spot on with the Service Department comment. I have a high mileage Rav4 and took in in for an oil change. They didn't change the sticker, fill the tires (tp light was on) and didn't reset the maintenance light (was starting to blink when turned on). Are those big issues? Not at all. When added up though, it shows they sped through. Had to come home and check my oil to make sure that was done. We also have a Lexus and as noted here, they are amazing. Always nice and polite. Can walk out knowing your car was taken care of. To me, that is worth the premium price.

Hi David, I think the Lexus TX 500 is definitely nicer than the Toyota grand Highlander. I am a little disappointed that it’s not being made in Japan. However, it’s a wonderful and absolutely beautiful vehicle my first priority as you know, is quality control, so that’s why I am more interested in , the Lexus GX 550 so I’m going to wait until the last year of that version and model and possibly purchase one at that time…. I just have to wrap my mind around what they’re doing with the power plants I just can’t see myself buying any electric or hybrid vehicles, at least for the next 10 to 15 years until they are perfected. my biggest and only factor in deciding between the two is the 8-passenger vs 7 passenger seating. I can't believe they have no 8 passenger version for the TX. that may end up forcing me into a grand highlander. I'm willing to pay the premium for the lexus, but want the 8 passenger when going to a car this large and family oriented.

I think we all get enamored by features and luxury. Design is subjective so no comment. Everyone will have some "must have options". For me its memory seats, 2nd row bench seat, upgraded stereo, parking sensors, and acceptable torque. The equivalent Lexus TX is between $20k to $24k more than the Grand Highlander. The only real benefit I see is the 6 cyl engine. Most You Tube reviews state the GH Standard Hybrid performs just fine, but maybe just a little loud when you accelerate up large hills. After looking at both as well as the Mazda CX90 I ordered the GH Ltd. Hybrid with a bench seat, and no sunroof. Trading in my 2018 Highlander Ltd. with 117,000 mi. The net cost will be about $36k. Reg. gas savings over the old Highlander will be about $1,200 annually. The Limited Trim level is really the sweet spot for features without being punished on price.

I agree with Lexus quality being superior. I own a 2014 ES300h with over 120,000 miles and the car still runs like new. I recently had the car in a body shop to repair some minor dings and dents. The body shop gave it a good wash/detail and when I first got the car back, I really felt like it could pass as a 2 ~ 3 years old car. Besides some interior wear & tear and scuffs, the thing essentially looks new. I am very amazed at how well the car held up all these years and miles. I was waiting for the Grand High Lander to come out before knowing the TX is coming out soon as well. Unless the test drives show otherwise, I will most likely go with the Lexus TX. One disapointment on the TX is that it only fits 6 for the hgher trim/Hybrid models.

I already emailed Lexus Corporate asking them to consider putting a bench seat on the 2nd row for the PHEV at least as an option. There is no point leaving legroom for the 3rd row passengers or use the space between the captains chairs for easy access to the 3rd row since the GH is such a huge vehicle now

the plugin hybrid date isn't even announced, and with the wait times and all it'll be over a year before any of us would be able to put our hand on it. Also the looks are subjective, personally I Really dislike what they've done with the front, and I think GH looks much better than the TX in that department. Not to mention it'd be at least $15K over the platinum version so no point in my opinion.

Good to understand all the differences. However, I was expecting a comparison taking into account the price difference. Before watching the video, I’d assume everyone agrees that a Lexus is a far better car than its Toyota counterpart. The key is how do you put value to those differences? Many of features mentioned will be optionals even on the highest TX trim. So, at some point we need to introduce the difference in price em relation the difference in attributes to the conversation. Anyways, good list of differences.

If the TX 550h+ is actually built in Princeton along with the other TXs and the GH, it would also be a first for Toyota/Lexus NA for PHEV production. If under $80k, would qualify for Federal Tax Credit too potentially. However, based on history of Toyota/Lexus production demands and capacity, I would venture to guess that the PHEV TX may be launched with production in Japan initially and then transitioned to the Princeton facility.
