Norman is the most underrated bass player of the last 50 years IMO. I've seen him several times over the years and he is absolutely phenomenal. This is one of the hardest lines to play and anyone who can do it well has my respect :)

Recently saw Norman Watt-Roy play with Wilco Johnson and he was phenomenal…spent all evening watching him shred the bass and hardly noticed what Wilco was doing.

Sorry to be picky, but during the chorus, the Hit me with your rhythm stick bit, the notes should be F, G, A, G, not F,G,Ab, G. Definitely 'major'. And not sure about the ascent/decent for 'nice to be a lunatic' either, it's a chomatic descent ending on the G. Other than, that, spot on.

I wish somebody could do a good you tube tutorial about how to get a good technique for the middle and index finger 16 note plucking hand 1/16 note pumping. That is imho the hardest part of playing this riff. There are mechanics to this technique that guys like you aren't fully sharing James. It would be wonderful of you could. If I move my fingers at your speed the notes just sound muffled.

There ARE really 7 REASONS why this Riff is Genius...it is an amazing riff example of using 7 (8 note octave) notes to work up and down the fretboard with 4 different octave changes that completely "recycle" seamlessly...way cool!

Thanks for pointing that out! Cheers!

I watched a bass cover of this the other day and, even as someone who doesn't play an instrument, was blown away by how much work the player was doing. As a bass player friend of mine said, "You bought the whole neck, so you're gonna use it all."

Norm is the sole reason I picked up the bass when I was 16 and left drums behind. Me, my best pal and his Dad never missed Wilco whenever he was in the northwest of England, saw them many times over the years, my pal was a Wilco fanatic and me a Norm fan (we were in a band together). We always hung around after the show and they always accommodated us, so friendly. Had several conversations with Norm over the years, absolute diamond of a guy, even crashed me a fag or two and let me play his bass, showing me the pentatonic fast end to his classic Don't let your Daddy know solo!!❤ Still my biggest influence, in my opinion there's no better bassist. Waffle over😂

I watched this video the other day, then got a message from a friend offering me a spare ticket to see Wilko Johnson last night - I spent more of the evening watching Norman playing bass, though maybe it helps that his fingers appear to be about six inches long..... (At least I could work out how Norman played the notes - Wilko looks to strum a shuffle rhythm with his fingers and produce both rhythm and lead together!) Thanks for another great tutorial.

Not to get attention away from this great lesson. But I have to bring up the "Mama Tour" DVD. I've watched that hundreds of times! Genesis is my favorite band and have been since I was 8. Out of all the live albums that they have the "Mama Tour" is my favorite! Great lesson by the way. What a great bass line! I'll have to spend some time on this one.

They've had an amazing run! They are a special group of guys! I saw them in Chicago in 2007. Awesome concert!!! Phil Collins got me to play the drums when I was younger. I was in a band in high school. Now I'm wanting to learn the bass guitar. I've always thought that it was a cool instrument! I love Mike Rutherford's bass playing.
