There are two KZbin families that have moved into Sicily. You might want to see their channel and get a hold of them for assistance if they’re in your area. First is LEAW (leave everything and wonder)-an Italian couple that moved a year ago down there from North. They helped the British couple (Travel Beans) recently secure a residence in their village. Anyway I’m sure Luca and Sara would help if possible. They have their contact info in their description. Not only are they doing their own Euro home but got an olive grove too. Keep up the great stuff - looking awesome!!
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion, Sandy! I haven’t heard of either of those channels, but I’ll definitely check them out this weekend-appreciate the recommendation. It's great to see other creators navigating similar paths in Sicily. Have you had a chance to watch any of my earlier videos?

Those white metal bed frames could be repurposed by placing them in strategic places and use as a trellis to grow food producing vines- string beans, etc. If you plan to grow grapes, they can be used as the ceiling for an arboretum and grow wisteria, grapes, etc. Placed end to end they would make a nice long shade arboretum for you future back yard patio.Paint them brown to look like wood or green to blend in with vines.
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thank you, Mikey! That’s an amazing idea and something I hadn’t thought of at all! Repurposing those frames as trellises or an arboretum ceiling would add so much character, especially once the vines and grapes start filling in. I’ll definitely give this a try, and painting them to blend with the garden sounds perfect. Appreciate the inspiration!
@mikeyloreneАй бұрын
@@OperationSicily When the water is turned on, if the tables, wood, wood cabinets and drawers hose off well, They could be used for elevated box gardening for growing herbs, tomatoes, etc. Use the long wood boards as shelves, propped up by two of those large stones or cinder blocks to put the cabinet boxes on, line boxes inside with plastic, poke small holes through the plastic and bottom of box, fill with a layer of small rocks, add soil and plant whatever you like or need. Also, any pots or containers can be used for potted plants, bushes- like a lemon bush or green pepper bush.
@mikeyloreneАй бұрын
@@OperationSicily The legs on the bed frames can also be used for hanging basket plants, and that old tire can be used as a protective border for a newly planted small tree or small flower bed. Pick out your nicest stones/rocks and make a border around that pretty little tree near the front porch- add fresh soil and plant some pretty flowers or ground cover in the soil around the tree- it will instantly dress up your front yard for starters. If the chairs hose off well, place the chairs individually under the shade trees so people will have a place to sit in the shade. Tie two chairs together, paint color of your choice and use as a love seat under one of the bigger trees. If chair is not fit for sitting, put decorative potted plant on the chair and nice stones around the legs for some decorative garden enhancement.

How good's the roof? One huge patio area! OMG... possibilities are endless! I love that the whole property is walled in, too. Good to see you eating well...food looks delish!
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thank you, Joy! 😊 The roof really does have so much potential-it's basically begging to be transformed into a huge terrace with space for all kinds of seating, maybe even a BBQ setup! And yes, having the whole property walled in gives it that extra bit of privacy, which is perfect for making it feel like a true escape. As for the food, I’m definitely not skimping on that front-I love cooking, especially with all the fresh local ingredients here. Have you had a chance to check out my earlier videos too? 🍅🍋🍷

Off main subject, I know. She needs water with the dry food. She's probably got an eye on your place for her kittens! If she really has no owner, please, if you can, get her spayed after she's had the kittens. Cats can have up to 3 litters a year. Who is looking after the kittens.....😢 Maybe she thinks "This is a good man and maybe this time my babies won't get drowned". Sorry for wandering off topic, but I've seen too much feline misery.

The house has great 'bones' and already looks happier having been cleared and cleaned. Lovely to be at the start of what will doubtlessly be a fascinating renovation and adventure. Yes depending on ripeness Prickly Pears are sweet and delicious, just watch the fingers! Always use thick gloves and twist the fruit to open. The greener fruits will require more twisting but the riper, red fruits should split easily with little effort. Enjoy. And yes, water for the co worker. She'll need that even more that food if feeding kittens.

Can you touch the cat? If her nipples are thick and pink she may be having kittens in a few days. Seach for a big box, the size of a banana box ( but use no bananabox as they are sprayed with chemicals!) .Put a layer of old newspapers in the box and then some blanket of some sort. Never use a towel as the claws of the kittens get entangled in it. pPut the box on a dark, non drafty spot. In case she goes in to labor on your property. I have been a catbreeder for 10 years.

Not sure the water is plentiful enough for a swimming pool. I was thinking a cool/hot tub - either run by solar or wood-fired. One can keep it cool in the summer and heat it in the cooler months. Just treat the water for mosquitoes and algae.

When deciding on outside space first see how the sun and shows fall during the course of the day so you don’t obscure what you want and leave open what would be better shaded.

Please make sure you attach the footer bar inside the slots at the bottom of your ladder. The way it is here, the bolts are under too much stress and may fail. Fresh water always for the cat, especially with dry food. Hopefully you will have a new furry family and then your lizard and rodent problem will diminish. The house looks so much better with it cleared and clean. The garden can be amazing. Unless it already has a tank buried, consider getting a couple of used, but clean IBC’s and bury them with pipes that collect the rainwater. Then you can set up a small solar irrigation system and keep those trees healthy. That fallen branch is ideal firewood. Get yourself a small wood stove for the winter and have a vent and chimney drilled through the external wall and up the side of the house. Great for boiling a kettle or heating a pan as well as a bit of warmth. Look forward to the next episode.😎
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thank you for the advice on the ladder bar-I had no idea but it makes perfect sense to have the bolts go all the way through 😊 As for the stray cat, I’m doing my best to keep her well-fed and watered whenever I’m here, though with my frequent trips back to the UK, I don’t want her to become too dependent on me just yet. Hopefully, if things settle down, she’ll become a more permanent part of the place! The cleanup inside has been a game-changer; now I have a clear view of what’s actually possible here. The well currently holds around 650 liters, though I’ll need to fully drain it and check the refill rate-fingers crossed it’s not a week-long process! Planning to install two 450-liter pressure tanks for a steady supply, and rainwater harvesting might come next, but I’m still gauging the cost-effectiveness since it hasn’t rained much so far. I am considering a wood stove with standard aircon! I’ve got wood burners and open fires back in the UK, so I’m a bit tempted to go that route here too, even though aircon with heating could be more practical. Still mulling it over and need to weigh up the costings! Thanks for the tips, and I look forward to sharing the progress with you in the next video!

People are happy to help spay/vet shots a pregnant cat. Consider starting a fund raiser for her. dry kibble swells up in the digestive track and either dump water on it or have water besides it. She could use a cardboard box with a hole in the side to get in and out. You might have to take her to the vet sooner than later. Good cleanup with the yard, you might consider letting in those bleeting in the the background sheep to tidy up the grass and weeds in your yard. Keep making it yours and I like your plans for the back of the house. Good luck in keeping the salamanders out! Screens I tell ya :) Wonderful you are making it a family home and your kids are excited about being there. Living the dream.

As for the house, I'm planning to replace all the windows and doors, each with screens and integrated blinds to keep out salamanders and other critters that like to visit! @OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Yes, all the windows and doors will be getting replaced, along with a complete renovation of the bathroom and kitchen! Bit by bit, it's all coming together - lots to tackle, but it’ll be worth it in the end! And I definitely plan to try those prickly pear fruits once they’re ripe - sounds like quite the experience with those little spines! 🌵🍴 Thanks for the tips and encouragement!

Water for kitty every day. Place is looking good with what you have done so far!
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thanks so much for the support! I’ve been doing my best to look after the stray kitty, keeping her fed and watered as much as I can. With my trips back and forth to the UK every couple of weeks, I haven’t wanted her to get too dependent on me just yet, as I wouldn’t have a way to care for her when I'm away. But as things settle here, I'm hoping she might become a more regular part of the place!

Thanks, John! Great advice on composting, and I'm definitely planning to build a large composting bin for all those branches and trimmings etc. A good compost supply would be very ideal for some future veggie planting, especially for courgettes and pumpkins! The roof terrace is amazing, an unexpected bonus for sure. Just needs a shaded area and stairs. What area of Sicily are you in?
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thanks! The roof terrace really does feel like a hidden gem-it has so much potential for a shaded seating area, maybe even a little outdoor dining spot once the stairs are in. Right now, I’m located in Trapani, an area filled with history and those stunning countryside views! Are you familiar with Sicily?

Is there a water shortage there? The yard, trees, and grass are crying 😭 out for 💦 water! All the best! Thomas!
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thanks, Thomas! Yes, keeping everything watered is a real challenge here, especially without a mains water supply. I’m currently hauling in water jugs to keep things going, but I plan on restoring the old well to provide a steady water source. It’s a bit of a process since I need to drain, sanitize, and check the well first, then set up a proper pump system. In the meantime, the trees and plants are getting by, but I can’t wait to see how they thrive with a regular water supply. 🌳💦 Have you watched any of my other videos?

Thanks, John! Glad you’re enjoying the updates. 😊 For water and power, I've got plans underway: for water, I'll be restoring the old well on the property, which will need a generator to help pump and filter it once it’s set up. As for power, I’m working on getting a full rewire done to modernize everything-hopefully not too long now! And yes, this project is daily, full-on (except for the occasional trip back to the UK). @OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Right?! The poor trees will have to hold out just a bit longer! 🌳 With no running water, no power to drain the well, and a 40-minute round trip to fill containers, I’m limited at the moment. But once I have the water supply sorted, they’ll be thriving! Thanks for the encouragement and kind words 🇨🇦😊
@kellyh8347Ай бұрын
Since your area is mostly walled in, any vine or trees hanging over-I consider a rodent highway! Since you had such a problem, maybe you can ask your neighbor if you can do some trimming! I agree with the water for the cat, stat! Sometimes they need help with the birth process. Check KZbin to find out how you can help the cat if she gets in trouble with the process! Finally, i totally agree with keeping the bedframe! It can be a great help for a future garden for melons, green beans and many other fruits and vegetables!!! Start of composting-all of the greenery you gathered! A little advice-try to answer every comment, it helps keep commenters going which will eventually really help your KZbin algorithm! Finally, it’s nice to hear you talk to us as you are doing things and making plans for an area you are working on! Fantastic terrace-roof deck! Best part of the property! BTW-tiles can be painted, successfully!
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Yes, I've tried my best to trim any overhanging branches from my neighbor's side, especially since he has a massive amount of prickly pear cacti-definitely don’t want to give rodents any easy access routes! The language barrier has made it a bit tricky to coordinate with him, so I’ve kept to clearing what's on my side for now. For the stray cat, I’m keeping her well-fed and watered whenever I'm around, though I’m cautious about making her too dependent since I have frequent trips back to the UK. If things settle down, she’ll hopefully become a more permanent fixture here! And absolutely, the metal bed frames are staying-such a brilliant idea for future garden use! I always try to respond to every comment, not just for the KZbin algorithm but because of all the genuine support, advice, and encouragement I’ve received. I’m planning to add more talk-throughs in my videos as I get a bit more comfortable, but I like keeping things visual, too. Thanks so much for all the tips and support-it means a lot! Wishing you all the best! 😊

Coming along nicely ! One question, how confident are you that the roof tiles are properly sealed, or do you plan to do something with them ?
@OperationSicilyАй бұрын
Thanks so much, Peter! I appreciate the support! 🙏 As for the roof, I actually think it's holding up well since I haven't seen any dampness, flaking, or signs of mold on the ceilings inside, which gives me a bit of confidence that it's still in decent condition. But I do plan to go over it fully to ensure it's weatherproofed for the long run. Ideally, I’d like to apply a waterproof polyurethane-based membrane with a polyester fleece for reinforcement to prevent cracking-it’s the best solution I can think of to seal everything up tight. Finding the right materials here in Sicily has been a daily adventure on its own, so fingers crossed I can get what’s needed! After sealing, I’m hoping to deck it with either wood or composite to create a solid terrace for some chill-out space. Stay tuned for that stage! 😊
@peterincork3121Ай бұрын
@@OperationSicily I think you're right with your approach, for the cost of it, it will give you peace of mind. We had a top floor apartment in Spain some years ago and the outside terrace leaked down to the neighbour below. It ended up costing us over €3000 to rip the tiles up, apply a new membrane and put new tiles down. A hard lesson. Actually my brother has recently bought property in the Cefalu direction and is about to embark of renovation work soon. In his case anyway, he's looking to visiting IKEA in Catania for the kitchen etc.
