Great review. Audi should revert back to the days when they offered an Allroad with the option of Recaro seats and a 4.2 petrol V8 and get the RS6 drivetrain under the bonnet of the latest A6 Allroad. No showy badges, minimal exhaust pantomime. Some of us don’t need the rest of the world to know. I’m a former B5 RS4 owner and the increase in recognition when the B7 model was released was a sad day!

Joe, for my money you can't bang on enough about buttons, switches, controllers etc, instead of the nonsensical current obsession by so many manufacturers to stick all functions on un-userfriendly, easily smudged touchscreens with their irritating multiple menus. Keep it going.

I believe the SQ7 TDI had three turbos. Plus, the SQ7 petrol was available in the US before Europe decided to use the petrol engine.

Joe, great review and some pertinent detail. It is (relatively) light with the same platform as Cayenne/Urus but at a much lower cost. The "detuned" engine is also shared. I like the Q car look. Spent a month researching it and mine arrives in Sep and will debadge so it looks like an up-optioned 3 litre diesel ! Around 15% off with the brokers currently which increases its price advantage over X5, Cayenne, GLE etc. Keep up the good work! PS I'm a chunky 5 11 so happy.

Great review Joe, was not expecting you to like it so much. I was really torn between a basic Diesel SQ7 and a Vorsprung 50 TDI, in the end I went for the 50 TDi on the basis that I would enjoy the higher spec more of the time than the higher performance. The petrol takes it to another level but not sure I could live with sub 20 MPG. Perhaps the most surprising thing is the weight though, only two beefy mates heavier than an RS6, makes the RS6 look a bit porky no?

I’ve got one of these. The Vorsprung edition. Picked it up a month ago. Absolutely love it! Got mine in orca black and have had the rear chrome bar and badges all blacked out. Don’t know why Audi don’t offer this! Such a great car. Hardly finding any reason to use my 500bhp RS3 anymore! Had a close to tussle with a 570bhp M5 in the SQ7…. Side by side to silly speeds. It’s very quick!

@@mm7963 The SQ7 is my family car… doesn’t need to handle. RS3 is the hooligan car that has perfectly acceptable handling for how hard you can push on a public road but absurdly fast out of bends and has impressive grip. Don’t need any more than that for the public roads. Although the RS3 doesn’t do enough differently to the SQ7, so I am considering swapping it for something like an Ariel Atom or a quick Caterham. Handling wise, the differences between say a golf R / civic type-r and an RS3 aren’t noticeable on the roads. So unless you’re comparing the handling of my cars to something like a caterham etc, then it’s a moot point really! And one that people like to wheel out because it’s the east argument. I can assure you the RS3 doesn’t feel lacking at all round a country road…(facelift so not the boaty under steering previous gen).

I'm 6ft 10 amd had a 2015 Q7 and now have a A7 bitdi ..the seats are more comfortable in the A7 ....I'm thinking sq7 atm..so this video is excellent..well done

I bought this car and yes your test also helped, i tried the rs6 and it was great, and i now its lighter and ita a wagon but it was 45000 euros more expensive in my country than this sq7 so i choosed with the brain vut honestly i dont miss anyting , so thank you Joe.

Bought one back in July. I absolutely love it. Coming out of a full sized Range Rover I was a little concerned with how smooth the ride would be, but the air suspension takes care of that, and the 500+ horsepower in dynamic mode makes this as much of a driving machine as any BMW SUV that I've driven (my wife has a BMW X5 4.0 and I test drove the X5 M50i before buying this). I live in the mountains in Vermont and driving up the mountain passes is incredible! You feel the weight of the vehicle going into the terms coming down, but that's to be expected. Stupendous vehicle!

Great review. I have the diesel version - I doubt I would have bought a petrol version. I do a huge mileage and I think in the real world the petrol one probably has a 10mpg penalty and that just wouldn't have worked for me. I also love low down torque and with 650lbsft peak at 1000rpm I think the only way to better that is probably with an EV! We may never see a big high performance diesel like that again, another reason I went for it.

Joe, really keen to know your thoughts on the SQ7 vs the X7 M50i. We bought the latter partly thanks to your video on the X7 and it is an incredible place to be. The materials, the kit, the power train are exceptional. But... 6 months in I am falling out of love with the driving aids which seek laggy and unreliable. Some of the motors are starting to groan, the panoramic roof liner snags and I fear what other reliability issues we might have in the future. It isn't what I expected for a £100k+ motor... I'm sorely tempted with a GLS but know the interior quality will never live upto the X7... especially at 20 grand more! or... downgrading on the lux and third row space and buying the SQ7. What are your thoughts? I'm definitely a sports mode driver and prefer that setup in the X7 to the wallow of comfort... and do prefer exhaust noise over silence. Its such a tough decision. Let me know your thoughts mate.

Why is the boot floor higher so you lose boot capacity? The golf R is similar in adding 4wd and rear diff you lose some boot, but the base Q7 is obviously already 4wd so what changed for the SQ7? Cheers

I have one of these, and I have to fight my right foot nearly to the death to get more than 10mpg. It's thrilling and rewarding but it costs plenty. Filling up from empty nearly hits the maximum dollar limit on the gas station payment app on my iPhone. If I hold back enough, I can get it up to 15.6 for city driving. I'm surprised by your impression of the seats. There are bolster adjustments on mine that hug my legs and torso pretty well (Though the adjustment is only available through a stupid touch screen menu accessed either by clicking the seats in the climate screen or buried in settings. The black sills, grille inserts, mirror housing and rails are Vorsprung/Black Edition trims in the UK, and an optional 'black optics package' in the US. I think the blue looks way better with the silver trim. The other curiosity is that the panoramic roof is standard in the US on both available trims.

I have the petrol Vorsprung and this is a great review - spot on about how well it plays two roles. One thing though - I’m averaging 25mpg and getting 30 on a light run, so it is easy to get a decent mileage

Just got one and the eco mode makes a ton of differnece to mpg by fircing it to run on 4 cyls a lot of the time. I get 28-35 on the motorway rolling at 85 in eco then a lot less than that in dynamic on B roads:)

The only thing I disagree with is the climate screen - it's perfect. Hiding stuff in menues on one main screen is a big mistake, but having a dedicated screen with some nice haptic feedback is exaaactly what I always wanted. Never knew I did until I drove a 2020/21 Q7. The haptic feedback just does it for me - it looks and feels just way more premium than regular buttons imo.

Unfortunately Joe the biggest problem with these ‘Family Wagons’ and many new cars now is their manufacturers policy to fleece the buyer - so many cars are now approaching £100k to spec as you want - it’s just nuts - I wouldn’t mind but at the end of a PCP ( which is debt and the only way most people can afford them) they’re not worth a light - seems to me that the auto industry has gotten out of sync with its public in recent years. There are still a few areas in uk where one can buy a small street of houses for £100k 🤪

It’s not so much leasing the car per say - it’s more about the high value of the lease or pcp in relation to used values if you want to get out of it - I just think new cars have been inflated to a degree that seems to be coming unreasonable in relation to other major purchases these days.

To clarify, the older pre-face SQ7 did not have fake exhaust. It did indeed have 4 real exhaust pipes, however not to be exchanges with the SQ5 that does habe fake pipes.

Another great review Joe. I always found Audi looked after front seat passengers and forgets about the rest of the passengers. My X7 is comfortable and easily accessible for all with USB-C charging (and even a rear, rear sunroof) for all. Just my thoughts. Thanks again for your review. Look forward to next weeks! Peter.

I do like the styling on most of Audis S models providing you've ticked the box to black out the chrome grills! They're probably the sweet spot in the range and like the toned down look with badges removed.....

You Guys, Need to come to Europe. There you have to drive the Autobahn in Germany and Stelvio in italy. Then you will know an understand these 2 cars in a different way. And if possible drive The SQ7 V8 Tdi with 900 nm.

Mate don't even start always wanted sq7 with that 4l v8 and audi said they will not make the SQ7 and SQ8 with that engine because of RSQ8. All I had to do is wait a year. Feel absolutely mugged off.

Think the SQ7, (and SQ8) is a real deal. Would be my option as offers the best performance v cost. In reality the extra £25k for as RSQ8, can’t see it given Audi now put the petrol 4.0 litre twin-turbo in the S cars (albeit a slightly down-tuned version) but for the average Joe driver the difference won’t be noticed, and it looks more clandestine when compared to the RSQ8

The BMW that directly competes with the SQ7 is the XB7. The Alpina is A little more money but it is a little bigger and offers a more luxurious interior especially for the 2nd and 3 rows. The performance of the two SUV’s has to very, very close to each other.
