Hope on the Street documentary series about street dancing is absolutely WONDERFUL. It was entertaining but also educational and gave me an even greater appreciation for J-Hope's talents. Every person he collaborates with during the episodes have mad respect for him as a dancer and as a person. I'm sure people have told you that Neuron is the dance crew in his home town that gave him his start in dance. He would hang around them because he couldn't afford lessons and dance when they played filler music in between classes and ask questions. Eventually the dance group Neuron invited him to join them. Looking forward to Volume 2 (since the first set of episodes were titled Volume 1).

@AilinLoh4 ай бұрын
Gaeko (gay-co) and Yoon Mirae (yoon mee-ray) were part of early hip-hop legends when j-hope was still a trainee. Gaeko was a member of Dynamic Duo (one of his song comforted hobi when he had a breakup during the pre-debut years) and Mirae's husband Tiger JK is known as the father of korean hip-hop. They inspired j-hope during his early years. Neuron, a local hip-hop crew in j-hope's hometown Gwangu, nurtured him in his teens and invited him to watch then join their crew - at a time when he was too poor to even afford dance lessons. So the song, the title and the features were therefore huge nods of respect and homages to his inspirations. The boy represents young j-hope as he travels his life streets and photo-records them, which end up on the wall of memories. Also, note the play of words between NEURON and NEW RUN... By the way, Neuron is part of the album Hope On The Street (HOTS) which functions as a series of OSTs through which j-hope, together with his dance mentor, popping champion Boogaloo Kin, explored the different street dance genres - locking, popping, house dance, hip-hop, and his early years of street dance - in Osaka, Seoul, Paris, New York and Gwangju (hometown). The whole documentary series premiered on Amazon Prime on March 27, 2024. It was an absolute song and street dance feast!!

Johnny is right on the pronunciation! It’s to rhyme with hope, hoe-bee. The writers for this song are J-Hope, Gaeko, Pdogg, and Yoon Mirae. The three of them each wrote their own lyrics for their verses, and j-hope also worked on the chorus!
@ccx70044 ай бұрын
Also, this song is dedicated to the underground dance crew j-hope was a part of (as a child and teenager) before he joined BTS, called Neuron. In his recent dance documentary Hope on the Street, he even travelled back home to visit his old members and danced to this song with them!

I honestly don't know anything about Gaeko, except that he's an independent/underground Hip Hop artist. Yoon Mirae is a legend in the S. Korean underground Hip Hop scene. She's Korean-American + Black & Korean (I believe her father was an American G.I. who married a Korean woman while stationed there), so she has a direct connection to Hip Hop's roots, along with R&B, Soul, etc. Yoon Mirae raps as well as being a great singer. She's married to Tiger JK, a Korean-American rapper - they're founding members of Drunken Tiger, an OG underground Hip Hop collective. For J-Hope, RM & Suga, solo work has meant an opportunity to work with their heroes. So, while on the one hand it may seem like global superstars deigning to work with relative unknowns, in this song (and some other collaborations they're done), it was really a chance for J-Hope to pay his respects to the people who inspired, mentored & guided him when he was just starting out.

Gaeko is a rapper and one half of Dynamic Duo, which was big in the early 2000s (and I think one of Hobi's influences). Yoonmirae is a singer and rapper who debuted in the late 90s and eventually became part of MFBTY (short for "my fans are better than yours") with her now-husband in 2013 (the same year BTS debuted). (RM featured on one of MFTBY's songs, Buckubucku). This whole album (which I love) was the soundtrack for his "Hope on the Street" dance documentary exploring today's hiphop dance scene around the world, which is why it slaps so hard. (Also, 'cause it's Hobi.)

The documentary showed Jhope's street dancer roots where he visited masters of each of the different types of street dance (such as popping, locking, house and hiphop ......) and worked with them to master that genre. For each genre of dance he produced songs along with co- producers and artist which brought together on this Hope on the Streets Vol 1 album. J-Hope is a master of dance as well as music. I think he should be appreciated by a wider audience. Thank you for your reaction.

This song NEURON is a dedication by Hobi to his old dance crew, the way ones who inspired him to be the incredible dancer he is today. They are his origin and what made his passion for dance grow. This song is also the title track for his OST album for the dancing documentary he released on Disney+ “Hope on the Street” where he explores different types of dances, most of which he is already proficient in, but with the intention of reminiscing his passion for dance when that was all he had. Each ep. of the documentary is a different dance style, each with a different song associated to it. And NEURON was the grand closure where he visited his old academy and met old friends from the dance crew and truly remembered how it was when he was simply a boy driven by his love for dancing, seeking to grow and become the beautiful and successful person he is today.

Hobi= ho bee. His name is J-hope, in Korea sometimes an 'ie' sound gets added to the end of your name, casually between friends. So in this sense it would be Hopie, but also in Hangul the character that would make the P sound has a B sound to it to, so Hobi for short. You may here the members call him Hoba, because 'ah' is also a sound that gets added to your name in close relationships, kind of like a term of endearment.

Hobi is the Korean pronunciation of Hope plus the affectionate Korean suffix which sounds like ee on the end. You will hear them use that suffix for each other (Jungkookie, Taehyungie, Jiminie, Namjoonie, etc.) Jin just gets called Jin Hyung, since he is everyone's big brother, as the eldest. Yoongi/Suga gets called Suga Hyung, Yoongi Hyung or Yoongiah. So Johnny is correct, Hobi rhymes with Hope. Neuron was j-hope's street dance crew from when he was just a sprout. He was the youngest ever member, at 10 years old, a natural dance genius. But Neurons are also what store memories, so there is a double meaning in the song. You see the child Hobi making memories in the MV, encounters and moments, represented as photos, and the old man Hobi looking back on them at the end and how they all connected to the story of his life. 2010 was when the three rappers were signed to Big Hit and moved into the dorm apartment together. j-hope was actually signed first but stayed in Gwangju to train, because Big Hit had no dorm yet and no dance or other teachers or practice space. So he didn't move to Seoul until the end of 2010, to join RM and Suga in the newly acquired dorm. The vocalists were signed over 2011-2012 in this order: Jin & Jungkook pretty much at the same time, then Taehyung, all three in 2011. Then Jimin was signed in 2012. They debuted as a group on June 13th, 2013. Jimin was signed last and had the unheard-of short training time of just six months. Yoon Mi-rae is biracial (Black/Korean.) She was born in Texas and grew up partly there and partly in S Korea. Her real name is Natasha Shanta Reid. She is married to S Korean Hip Hop Legend Tiger JK and they are two thirds of Korean Hip Hop collective MFBTY (with rapper Bizzy.) They did a collab with RM in 2015 called BuckuBucku. Gaeko is an OG of Korean Hip Hop from Dynamic Duo, mentioned in the lyrics to BTS song Hip Hop Phile. Yes, they are constantly busy. Don't forget their variety show RUN BTS, their travel shows Bon Voyage and In the Soop, Yoongi's interview show Suchwita, their incredible MVs, their short films, all their interviews and other show appearances, their documentaries, their vlogging, their livestreams, their tours, their online concerts, their 12-14 hours a day of dance practice when preparing choreography for performances or tours, etc, etc, etc...... This is why ARMY is kind of glad they get the military as a BREAK! A chance to have somewhat regular jobs and schedules and make friends and be around normal people (soldiers, but not all fans, entertainers, industry or famous people.) We'll be glad when they are back, but it seems like it's been an overall good experience for them.

to clarify why it's hobi with a 'b' instead of hope-ie, p and b are the same sound/'letter' in korean. Or really the sound is in between a p and a b sound, and spelling his nickname Hobi with the 'b' is just the standard spelling we use since it does usually sound more like a b when they say it. It's like g and k in korean. You might sometimes see Yoongi's name romanized as Yunki, which is technically also right, but 'Yoongi' is the standard spelling in the fandom.

Missing out Hobi and Johnny is correct with his pronunciation.

Loved Yoonmirae´s part. Loveley lyrics. She is an amazing seasoned rapper but she also has an amzing singing voice. She has amazing OST´s. She is married to an amzing rapper also. Hahahah, a while, hahaha. It is 2013. All their B sides are fantastic, as good or even better than their amazing bops.

Johnny is right with the pronunciation. Technically, the hope in j-hope is written as 홉 which is romanised in English as ‘hob’. It’s good to note the b sound in Korean sometimes sounds a bit like a p to English speakers’ ears. Cutely jhope is referred to as hobi (literally saying hope-i). Even the other bts members call him that instead of his actual name a lot of the time.

With the names it usually helps to not think American pronunciation 😅 And you will always find some clips of them saying their own names. Oh, and sunshine works of course as well.😊

I love NEURON but it's not the best song to showcase Hobi's great vocals. I'd go with Lock/Unlock or I Don't Know from the On The Street album. Although the entire album is a banger.
