FYI: The brilliant idea behind the A series paper format is that the proportion of the two sides is 1:√2 - meaning, that when you cut a sheet of paper in half widthways, you'll end up with 2 sheets of exactly the next smaller A format. Additionally A0 has an area of exactly 1 square meter, so every smaller A format is an exact fraction of that (half, 4th, 8th and so on). You gotta love engineers.

The Din-A paper sizes make totally sense, because they are not random. When you fold the paper, you get the next smaller size and the ratio of the side lengths is always the same (1/√2).
@entylsa

But this is about the ratio not the size
@bennytolkienfreund7182

But the size isnt random aswell because Din-A0 Paper has a surface of 1m². A Din-A4 is then than a sixteenth square meter.

I was in the US, more precise in Portland Oregon and they have much better beer than in Germany because they have so many micro breweries which really know how to brew really good beer. I germany I had good beer in a couple of small breweries in Franconia, but most of the time you just get boring Pils, in the US I got really awesome craft beer.

The DIN-A paper sizes are actually quite clever. You can go all the way from A-0 to A-10 just by folding in half along the longer side and you'll always get the same aspect ratio.

Jan-Paul Fajta Well yes, in practice you'd obviously have to _cut_ it in half if you want to go all the way from A-0 to A-10 but if you just want to go down one size, folding works just fine.

Medievalfan94 funny about the din paper size is the din a0 has exactly 1m2 in area. and as you all might know. the larger the number, the more you halved the din a0. leading to the fact that every din paper has the same format (german genius mathematics) by taking a length of a making one side the length 1a and the other side a length of sqrt(2)a*. and multiplying that division by sqrt(2) you get a rate of sqrt(2)a to 2a. which inverted is 2a to sqrt(2)a and thereby: twice the size as the original. smart men these germans... and i doubt anyone wanted to know either of this... *sqrt(x) = squareroot(x)

Interestingly, before some civil servants took it upon themselves to make our Danish Kronor bills look like Euros in every boring manner imaginable, our bill sizes varied in both length and width, with larger denominations larger in both directions. And now those traitors went ahead and sold the printing press too.

(Eventhough the 500€-note is about to be abolished. In 2018, they will ne not handed out by banks anymore. +dontrequest I've seen multiple weird hole patterns that don't match the usual 8cm-8cm-8cm 4-hole pattern. One that could share the punch tool easily is 8cm-7cm-8cm, but I'm not sure if that's a US pattern. Another that I've definitely seen on US origin materials is a 3-hole pattern with larger holes (middle hole is obviously in the middle, not sure what the standard distance and diameter are). Finally, I suspect that a punch tool for the standard 8cm-8cm-8cm pattern could have settings to center itself on paper with the US "letter" and "legal" paper sizes.

Hey I've got a question for you: there are postcards etc here in germany with things germans say like "du gehst mir tierisch auf den Keks" translated word for word into english because it sounds funny ("you go me animally on the cookie"). When have you first seen stuff like that and what was your reaction?
@moatl6945
@moatl6945 7 жыл бұрын
Well this is just colloquial. »tierisch« means »like a(n/ wild) animal. (oh English grammar…) »(mir) auf den Keks gehen« translates literally to “to get on (my/somebodies) cookies« - “cookies“ is in the meaning of “nerves”. It is meant in the meaning of “private area”. This saying is used in different variations: »Keks« (cookie(s)) can be variated with “nerves« (Nerven - see English), »Senkel« (Schoelaces) and/or »Wecker« (Alarm Clock).

In Germany you need one year of school and one year of internship and then you could be the one responsible for the patient... No real school degree required... That is very poor, especially when you're sitting in class and some other stundents don't even know basic math or how to find the important facts out of a text... Since they changed something about the education it might get a little better... But nothing like the american drill...

The cool thing about DIN A4 is, that if you fold it in half, the new piece of paper has the same width-to-height ratio as before. And you can do that again and again and again. And also the other way around. If you put two pieces of A4 together you get A3, with the same ratio again. That's so cool.

The A scale of paper has other useful attributes: you can fold them to get the next smaller denomination. Fold an A0 to get two A1 papers. Or fold one A3 and get two A4 papers.

When something is bigger in Germany and in Europe, it is still bigger. Does not matter if it is only bigger in Germany, or in Germany and Spain, or Germany and the rest of Europe. Genius.

The German language generally needs more space/letters to say the very same thing. Like if you translate books, the German version will have more pages.

The Disney comic book rights in much of Europe (+ Russia and China) is owned by a Danish company (Egmont) which I visited 25 years ago. They publish the same stories in many countries and they try to do it cheaply so the coloured parts were the same in all the versions but the black parts (which contained the text) were different for each. That meant that the speech bubbles had to be big enough for all the languages they used. English had the smallest space requirements. German had one of the biggest -- but was beaten by about 10% by Finnish.

I had one question in my head: why not using a A0, A1, A2, or A3 to talk about big? :D And the full name of the paper is DIN A4 (German Industrial Norm A4) and the smaller number double the size each time: 2 * A6 = 1 A5 (A5 = standard for diaries) 2 * A5 = 1 A4 (A4 = standard for letters) 2 * A4 = 1 A3 (A3 = standard in schools) 2 * A3 = 1 A2 (A2 = standard for newspapers)

There are different sizes of spoons in Germany. The one shown in the vid is for soups, and you don't put that one completely in your mouth - just the tip of it, and let the soup float in! That's why the shape of it is so slim at the tip!

Our TVs were bigger. They had a higher resolution. But that was before HD. Analogue TV channels used up more space in the frequency band: 7.5MHz vs 6MHz But American AM radio channels use more space than German/European. They are closer to HiFi and sometimes use C-QAM for stereophony. In Europe stereophony is limited to FM.
