The daughter of my girlfriend brought a tangomaster from Buenos Aires to The Netherlands. This guy got a complete cultureshock. He had NEVER been to a country or met anyone who could not speak Spanish. In his mind, Spain was the most important country of Europe and therefore everyone would at least speak a little bit Spanish. The other even more severe culture shock was that in Amsterdam there were more tangomasters than in Buenos Aires. It was mindboggling for me, too, by the way.

- Most restaurants don’t give you water for free in Italy, not even tap water (some do), but if they are not the super cheap restaurants, it will be glass bottles, not plastic - You don’t have to order every drink in advance if you go to a club in Italy, this must be a rule of the Eurovision clubs - Your Dutch data provider probably doesn’t rely on a good Italian provider when you use roaming. Signal is quite good in Italy especially in big cities. - It was the taxi driver who didn’t know where you could get food late at night (or early in the morning). Or just didn’t bother. Shops’ opening hours are much longer in Italy compared to the Netherlands and there are several supermarkets that are open 24/7, including in Torino not far from the center (just checked). There are snack machines at train stations also. - The heating/cooling thing is not really enforced except maybe for public administration buildings. Probably hotel owners didn’t want to pay for an even bigger electricity bill… - The deodorant thing: really??!!

Well, organization is not something we are good at. I don't know why, I often get angry at this, but apparently there isn't a solution. However there's an explanation about the double queue. In Italy for hygiene prescriptions, the person who touches money cannot serve food. Obviously the rule is not always followed in small shops, but in places where you attend many customers, double queue is normal. Regarding A/C, you must consider 3 things. 1. In Turin, in the days of Eurovision, It was very hot, for being the first half of May (27-28°), but not so very hot if you consider that in summer temperature can rise easily to nearly 40°. 2. Electricity is very expensive in Italy, and after the Ukraine war the bills have skyrocketed. 3. Cause the war, government has created the rule about keeping minimum 25° when turning on A/C. You will understand that if you have 27° outside, it doesn't make much sense to turn on A/C to obtain 25°. It would only be a waste. If you will visit Italy in the winter, you will see that we must (by law) keep the temperature inside our homes at maximum 21° . I've known swedish people, visting Italy in february, complaining about how cold was the hotel. Obviously there's not the police checking inside private homes, but there are controls for public buildings. However the bill for heating is so expensive that people keep temperatures even lower at home. And next winter will be much worse . If there's a positive side to all of this is that our way is certainly more friendly to the environment.

On my next trip to Italy I will miss Domino's Pizza. 😉 But seriously: after restaurants close - no food for you! Some people (at least the Dutch) prefer a fried "horrible" snack over going to bed with an empty stomach. I was in Florence last week. Next to the central train station is a McDonalds. On its windows printed in BIG letters: "APERTO 24 ORE". I was there at 8 am and wanted a cup of coffee. No luck: it was closed although the employees were inside, chatting with each other. BTW, one small correction: in the Netherlands it rains between 120 and 155 days per year. So at least 240 days a year are totally dry. And on most rainy days it does not rain for more than about an hour. On those days you can use an app like "Buienradar" to see when it will be dry in your area that day.

Hi, Im here to satisfy your curiosity. I will begin saying I recognize all the issues with Italy regarding quality of life, politics and job situation and they make my life hell and my possibilities very slim even with a graduate degree in physics, in fact I am going to move soon. What I missed in the Netherlands was the beauty of the cities. In Italy 95% of the time even small cities or towns are beautiful, just going out and taking a walk makes you feel surrounded by peculiar architecture and landscapes. I found Dutch cities to look very similar to each other except for some cases, I guess that may be boring to me after a long time. I spoke to a group of Italians in the Netherlands and what they mainly miss is the sunny weather. Italy is unsustainably hot but it is sunny almost every day in some regions, looks like rainy weather messes with your mood on a chemical level and makes you overall more sad and more prone to depression

@@harrybruijs2614 That is absolutely not what I meant. My boyfriend is half Dutch so I had some kind of experience with Dutch people (his relatives and his friends) and they all seemed pretty chill, much more relaxed and overall with a healthier approach to life than Italians. However, some stats for example about the UK show an increase in the cases of clinical depression. They are obviously somewhat biased (more awareness means more cases diagnosed) but there is quite some scientific literature about the cyrcadian rythm. The stats about suicides in Scandinavia also show something similar, despite the quality of life is exponentially better than in other countries. This is obviously not a way to say these people are more annoying or negative or something, as I in fact envy them for the relaxed lifestyle, boi Italy makes my mental health so bad lol

About English speaking (or not): there is one reason why people in NL, Denmark etc. speak it a lot better than people in France, Italy and Spain for ex.: Dutch is not a widely spoken language, no one speaks it outside of NL and part of Belgium, whereas French people can travel to many different places such as Morocco, and still be understood speaking French. I have not even mentioned that Dutch is quite close to English so easier to learn for Dutch people. People need to stop taking for granted that everyone in the world speaks or should speak English!

About the air conditioning, only public places have to follow the 25 °C rule (only in the summer, it's 21 in the winter), in our own houses we can set whatever temperature we want at any time. But it's not the outside temperature that has to be 25°, it's the AC temperature that can't go below that in the summer, which is... you know... a lot, especially considering this applies to all state-owned spaces such as schools. The thing is... I don't know that a hotel counts as a State-owned building though, maybe this was because it is technically an event indirectly organised by the state

This is true, French for example is easier to study as an Italian, though I can assure you the issue is with the Italian school system (which is pretty bad overall): we "study" English from 6yo to 18 but it is based on learning grammar and vocabulary and almost zero practining the language to improve your fluency. This is the case for all the languages you may study in Italy (Spanish, French, German). My parents spent their own money in English courses and exams for me.

In Italy tap water is fine almost everywhere, the issue may sometimes be with lead plumbings which I know is an issue with the older buildings in the Netherlands too. Sadly for some reason people are used to drinking bottled water and that is what they also offer at restaurants (mostly because they earn money from it). Recently most of the "bottled" water you pay for at restaurants is just a bottle refilled with tap water many times so its also a bit of a scam for the price

Hello, i would like to give some italian perspective on your "culture shoks" :) 1. regarding tap water is not usually served beacuse of course restorants gain money on selling you bottles of mineral water and at the other hand they probabibly think of giving a "poor" service to costumers giving them tap water. Lukily the environemtnal issue is raising up so most restaurantes use glass bottles the are "a rendere" so they ae cleande and reuse, and some restaurant is starting proposing tap water (quite rare to be honest). 2. Englis for italians is quite difficult to learn for many reasons: our edicational sistem focuses to much on grades instead of really speking a language (you have to try and make misteke in order to learn.. if you are avaluated every time you will be inhibited), dutch and english belong to the same language family, italian instead come from latin so spanish and franch are more easy to understand for us, moreover in Italy movie and series are allways dubbed so people lack exposure to foreing languages, starting a vicius loop. 3. Organization: i gree. Period. I don't know why. From school projects to work assignements, it's alwais a mess.. i swear we try our best but we all scrumble untill the last minute whe stuf magically happens. I wish i know why. Really. The drink stuf its weird..never hear about it. 4. Internet connection is not so bad.. probably depending on the area.. 5. actually there are secret pleces where you can by fresh pizza and croissants at 4 am. They are only known by locals and the secret is well keeped ;) 6. Rules regarding heating an cooling buildings are related to public places, offices and hotel, at hom you can do what you want 7. i traveld from US to Turkey and I've always, always, found some people smelling. Why? because we are human. Italians use deodorants. Period. But hot weather doesn't help. You can scrub your self with alccol but and the end of the they you will smell anyway. Moreover peopole do physica work and use public transportation and they not always have the chance to take a shower before coming home. Anyway nice video, looking things from other perspective always help to improve!!

I guess you have never been in a shower at an Italian camping during the weekend, where Italian women leave their menstrual cloths etc. lying on the floor or put them in the hole in the wand that is meant for putting soap in.. Nor even crossed a spot in Italian nature where Italian picknickers have been too lazy to take their rubbish, inclusing plastic bags and cups, home. I guess you as an Italian are not shocked by that but most foreigners are.

Tbh I usually don't drink tap water in Italy :) Tap water in the Netherlands is drinkable in the whole country. Organisation wise I can only say "Welcome to Italy". Also people in the north, in my experience, are more focused on the German language (around Lago Maggiore anyway) and in the south (Paestum, Napoli) English was pretty good. I got in a taxi in Spain, that guy didn't speak English too. So not just in Italy. The event with the bar line, strange. I do know that in autogrills and such (restaurants on the autostrada) you have to tell your order to one person, get a receipt and you go pay while they warm up your bread or something.

That card is pretty organized: you carry that card and when you leave you pay just one time, instead of wasting your and the bartender's time! You don't have to know in advance what you'll take: the cacheer writes in each square what drink you want to drink and at the end of the night you pay altogether. A card isn't even heavy so, what's the problem?! Besides that, it's a question of hygiene: it's pretty dirty to seeve drinks and grab money, which is the dirtiest think you could grab!

7 answers: 1) Italians don't like tap water (bottled water is cheaper than in Holland, that's why the Dutch drink tap water 2) Why haven't you tried speaking in French or Spanish? Maybe because you Americans can't speak other foreign languages? 3) Was disorganized Eurovision ... not all Italy 4) In Italy you have to get the receipt first for a matter of hygiene ... whoever touches the food must not touch the money (not like in Holland where whoever serves you touches everything) 5) The speed of the internet depends on how much you pay ... those who offer internet in public places pay the basic rate to the companies and are therefore very slow. 6) The shops that sell food in Italy open at 7 in the morning and close at 7 or 8 in the evening..... try looking for a food shop or a bar open in Amsterdam at 7 in the morning and then tell us how many you find; moreover, Italians do not eat food from machines, which is done in an industrial way (only Americans have the courage to eat it) 7) The rules for turning on the air conditioning depend on the city and the month. .... I won't comment on the use of deodorants ... evidently you haven't met a Dutch when he comes to Italy for summer holidays!

By the same token, the Italians are so damn good at everything else, that it makes up massively for the few shortcomings. Think of all the brands Italy has given the world. Fashion is probably the most notable. Gucci, Armani, Prada, Fendi, Versacci, Dolce Gabbana etc. Think of the automotive industry. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Fiat, Alpha Romeo, Pirelli, etc. Think of all the food and beverage brands like Nutella, Fererro, and Lavalla, or think of the Italian kitchen in general. I can go on and on. So before we take this opportunity to gloat about the Netherlands as we usually do in the comment section, just a friendly reminder that the Italians in general are so far ahead of us in every sense.

In every other sense you mean. Because when you have ever waited in Italy three hours for the train to come or tried to get something done from a official, you forget all those things. I once bought a first class ticket and got a second one and couldn't get it changed because the gentleman didn't talked a word outside the border and even seemed not to understand his own language. Primero is not Secundo or am I crazy. His younger and female college who spoke perfect English was not allowed to, because he was older and therefore manned the international desk while only speaking Italian. And then, in Second Class, you indeed discover, that some people in Italy smell, as there are in the Netherlands, but far more so. Eating garlic doesn't help but my girlfriend is Hindoestaans and never smells.

This is sooooo funny, to me. You were in the North of Italy. The North is relatively organised, comparing to the South. Here you are with American and Dutch-coloured expectations/experiences traveling to a fundamentally chaotic country, where you have to live with whatever is thrown at you, but added to that: in the North you are confronted with lots of strange rules and customs. The combination is bound to result in lots of surprises and revelations. Which it clearly did!

I think you just have to go with the Italian spirit. We were on an Italian cruise ship once. The food was fantastic and the entertainment was phenomenal. Very stylish and clean. However the organisation was hilariously chaotic. You could just see the car crash of things getting more confused. The day before we entered Portugal, they decided that ship's time would not be changed to Portugal's time. So they had to explain this in seven languages before the show because people's smartphones might change automatically when they went ashore. Of course this caused total confusion. We were late leaving Portugal because no-one knew what time it was. But it was a wonderful experience.

You always get a glass of tap water when buying coffee even if you don't ask for it. And for the club experience where you had to buy everything in advance... never ever ever seen anything like that in Italy. It might have been a Eurovision thing because they were expecting a lot of people? No idea, but definitely not an Italian standard. One more thing... we can all buy deodorants!! I had to get a whole lot of prerequisites agreed for an international IT-system rollout, like business cases and personnel reductions, a million legalities, license fees, management commitments, etc. My team and I got through the whole process within a week or so. Everybody was happy and we were about to leave the next day... Then the Country Manager walks into our last meeting and literally STARTS THE WHOLE PROCESS FROM THE BEGINNING! At some point I dragged him into a separate room and had to threaten him that I would change the rollout schedule and put Italy last in the country order, directly affecting his P&L, if he did not get back in line. When I talked to my CTO about it at HQ, all he had to say was: 'Typical... Italians...'. BTW the entirety of the Eurovision Italian hosting bits with Mika, Pausini and the other guy was such a mess! And btw, before you call me a stupid American or whatever, I'm half Canadian and half Romanian, have lived in the UK and NL the past 10 years, speak all latin languages at a decent level (gotta admit, mainly Spanish and French, Italian and Portuguese less so), am fluent in English and Romanian, and can even read Russian and Greek. I've travelled a lot but the level of laziness and inefficiency that Mediterranean countries show is more akin to what I'd expect from countries like Romania and Bulgaria, not main players in the Western EU. Yes, Italy is disorganized, network quality sucks, the opening times of places are a bit crazy because almost all services (not just shops have a “siesta” like break during the day that mostly is from 12:30-15.30.) and because mostly Saturday is a full working day, many restaurants, shops and services have an off day during the week. In some cases an entire town is picking the same day for closing. I used to live in Conegliano and on Mondays it used to look like a ghost town as everything was closed. The tap water quality in Italy is not always good and over the past couple of years when it’s hot in many places you get a legal limit on tap water use. Besides that Italy has many more options in spring water than the Netherlands and they are very strict about recycling (at least in the north) so buying bottled spring water doesn’t seem as horrible. Their inability to speak English used to be even worse and it used to drive me crazy. I’ve only lived there as a teenager, but my mom has been spending about 8 months of the year there for the past 30+ years so when she is there I get to hear this kind of stories every week.
