I still like how Christopher Nolan tried to cast Heath Ledger in Batman Begins in the role of Batman. Heath turned it down because he said he didn't want to be in a "comic book movie". When Nolan called Heath about The Dark Knight and offered him the Joker Heath accepted without even reading the script! lol The other "fun fact" I like is the Mr Grumpy mask the Joker has on in the Bank scene is the same mask Cesar Romero wore in the Batman show. Pretty cool "nod" :-)

I got to be an extra in the memorial processional scene. There were not enough extras to fill that crowd scene out, so they had to move us down in staggered groups while filming to make it look like there were more people in attendance. In the actual memorial scene, in between takes, Heath Ledger kept switching up his location as the disguised Joker amongst the crowd of police officers. It was kinda fun trying to pick him out of all the other cops.

He makes brilliantly intricate plans and rallies countless people to his cause and by the end of the book he's left in an insane asylum with scars on his face that make him resemble "a deranged clown" In The Dark Knight, the villain The Joker is a guy whose true identity is never revealed. The theory of the joker being ex-military would make sense, if not for one little thing. If he had been in the army (and deployed, as he would have to be for the story to make sense) the government would have his DNA on file (from blood samples, urine-tests etc.) and his fingerprints. When the joker was captured they took his DNA and prints and found no match.

@Mr16thPrestige9 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind though, a lot of the story was rewritten in the Nolanized Batman universe, for example the "acid" theory isn't so much of an option, unless you consider that maybe he fell into acid, and is using his makeup to hide his deformed, discolored face. However, at times we do se part of his face not being covered in makeup (such as on his forehead) and the skin looks perfectly normal, so I don't consider that a plausibel explanation for the Nolan-joker. The clean slate program was developed later, so the joker couldn't have used that, although it would fit his personality. No systems, no names, no means of ID. Anarchy in it's purest form.

Fun fact: back in 1988 there was a comic based on the Joker's past called The Killing Joke and the Joker says that HE doesn't really remember what made him the Joker... Hell, he says he likes it that way. "Something like that... happened to me, you know? I... I'm not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another; if I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" The Joker- The Killing Joke

@handsomebrick9 жыл бұрын
+kiya46107 The Dark Knight and Batman 1989 are both based on The Killing Joke. In the comic, Joker says that he used to be a guy called Jack Napier who led a group of criminals pulling a heist at a chemical factory, but was betrayed and a shootout ensued while Jack was being pursued by Batman and narrowly escaped by falling into a vat of chemicals that gave him a permanent clownish appearance. But he also admits to being inconsistent about how he recalls his origin. So both movies use Joker's origin from The Killing Joke, but in different ways.
@Acrizer9 жыл бұрын
+handsomebrick At no point in The Killing Joke is the name Jack Napier used, he wasn't betrayed, and they were actually robbing a playing card company next door to the chemical company he was a lab assistant at. He also didn't fall into a vat of chemicals... he purposefully jumped into the chemically polluted water outside of the processing plant in his attempt to escape.
@AlexDelarge19908 жыл бұрын
+handsomebrick Yeeaaah, I'm pretty sure the Jack Napier thing started from the 1989 Batman movie. That name or origin was never used prior to that. Jack Nicholson actually made a pretty sweet deal where he gets a cut of the profit whenever the Jack Napier name or story is used, because technically he originated it.

Now yes, I've had to have other comments to have me realize this, but listen to what the Joker says, and think back to the scene from The Shining. "My father was a drinker and a fiend. One Night, he goes crazier than usual." Referring to the scene in The Shining. "Mommy gets the Kitchen knife to defend herself." That's what the wife does. Also, Joker is talking about his Father. Jack Nicholson's character in The Shining chases not only his wife, but his kid as well. So, could it be like the kid grows up to be the Joker? I also want to point out something small, which is that Jack Nicholson played in both The Shining and played as The Joker in Batman '89. When I realized all of this, I was like, "Holy Shit Balls..

In a continuation of Lamborghini's tradition of naming its cars after stars from the world of bullfighting, the Murciélago is named for a fighting bull that survived 24 sword strokes in an 1879 fight against Rafael "El Lagartijo" Molina Sánchez, at the Coso de los califas bullring in Córdoba, Spain. Murciélago fought with such passion and spirit that the matador chose to spare its life, a rare honor. The bull, which came from Joaquin del Val di Navarra's farm, was later presented as a gift to Don Antonio Miura, a noted local breeder; thus began the famed Miura line of fighting bulls, and the name for one of Lamborghini's greatest designs.

I think the Joker as a veteran theory makes the most sense when you think about it, he clearly has experience with weapons - explosives and rifles, he even takes place in a military type parade. He also has at least some sort of basic knowledge in hand to hand combat, he gets into several fights during the film all of which end with him in control such as the scene in the interrogation room when he is teasing the police man over his dead friends, the policeman goes to hit him, the camera cuts away and when we next see them, the Joker has the guy hostage with a knife at his throat.

All soldiers have DNA, urine samples, fingerprints etc on record though.... and since they couldn't find that info, and Joker obviously isn't a master hacker (cause why physically rob a bank if you can do it digitally?), that throws that theory out the window
@SA80TAGE9 жыл бұрын
***** not Joker, he's just insane, he doesn't care about the world, Just Batman, and as JC said, cause it's fun. Real joker would make a game of it, he'd rob a bank as if he was out on a shopping spree, not a professional heist... he'd have entire days where he kills every single new recruit to his gang, just for the giggles... he would be doing the pencil gag (or other similar clown tricks), all the time, not just once... he'd redecorate an art gallery to suit his own image, and he'd do it on a whim, he is most dangerous when he is not planning anything, Batman is most dangerous BECAUSE he has plans... they are polar opposites.
@SA80TAGE9 жыл бұрын
***** Batman would not make that mistake, he is more thorough than that. He would search the records of the MIA, KIA, injured, discharged as well as currently serving soldiers. If there was a record of you anywhere, for anything, Batman would find it. No-one is capable of wiping every trace of themselves, hence why Catwoman needed the "Clean Slate Program", and it didn't exist until some time after the second movie, so Joker could not have used it.

ANOTHER FACT ABOUT "THE DARK KNIGHT"... The scene where The Joker starts exploding the Gotham General Hospitals, he emerges out front in full-on nurse garb, walking towards the camera. The intention was for the explosion to start immediately, but, something went wrong and there was a delay, but rather than look around for conference and break character, Ledger simply shrugs, fiddles with the detonator, and a few seconds later, the explosions begin and the scene can continue like normal. The director liked it very much so they kept the scene. MIND = BLOWN!!!!

Wait, wait, wait... Hold up a second. The ex-soldier suffering from PTSD angle for the Joker doesn't hold up actually. PTSD would not explain Joker's behavior. If he had battle-related PTSD he'd become frightened and go into hysterics every time a bomb detonated or gunfight broke out. PTSD victims can't tolerate environments that are similar to the ones in which they experienced their stressor event. PTSD seems unlikely since he planned violence & operated firepower throughout the movie. He would also still be able to recall his past life and would not be a leader of other men if he actually did have PTSD. He would be in a state of isolation and hyper-vigilance instead of leading crews of men into chaotic mayhem. In reality there isn't a real mental disorder in the medical field that matches the symptoms and effectively explains the Joker. That's the true brilliance of the Joker: maybe he isn't psychotic after all. Maybe he's just evil.

A lot of people talk about the Joker as though he were just insane and killed people simply because he's crazy. The Joker we see in The Dark Knight, however, has many moments throughout the film that establish him as very intelligent, rational (albeit in a very twisted sort of way) and above all, quite calculating. I haven't seen anything in that particular performance that would ever make me characterize him as crazy or insane. He has very clear motivations and he obviously puts a considerable amount of effort and planning into his dark deeds. Also, he appears to get quite offended when people just write him off as an insane freak, though he doesn't let that emotion fully overcome him. As he explains to Harvey, bringing about total chaos is the only way (in his mind at least) for things to ever be fair - which almost certainly comes from many of the horrible things he had experienced in his past. Harvey's character arc is likely a very close representation of the radical turn made in the mind and overall outlook of the Joker, only it happened to Harvey later in his life. He wen't through some incredibly traumatic loss and lost all faith in people and in the world, which leads to him deciding that "order" as he had experienced it was unjust and that utter chaos (or "chance" in Harvey's case) was the only way to make things fair.

TheThunderTrainer But that's just the thing, it's typically not pronounced by the names origin. If that were the case then Mazda should be pronounced Matsuda, even if it is truly correct it is not socially accepted unless you live in Spain :P
@Kampsycho8 жыл бұрын
Onyx The Mineral No... English speakers just wouldn't know its original pronounciation and would just stick to the one they all understand and can say. and considering it means bat and if you say it wrong it could be something else. Same with Asian car names, It's more typical for people to not try and learn to pronounce anything that isn't close to english since they won't live anywhere near people who speak it, even if South America is right there...but yeah.

My fave tidbit of The Dark Knight is about how Michael Caine sees Heath Ledger in full makeup for the first time ever while filming the fundraiser-crashing scene, so the look of shock and awe on Alfred's face when The Joker steps out of the elevator is genuine and true-to-life.
Whatever, I loved Groundhog Day, thank you so much for doing that episode. Seriously, thanks!

@NewMessage8 жыл бұрын
here's something next to nobody knows. When Heath first agreed to sign for the part, the idea being pitched was that the joker would be a tweaker, who huffed red paint, and 'The Joker' was a street name. DC nixed that but quick.
@A7XMetallicaFTW9 жыл бұрын
See, one of the reasons this film was so great was all the little details. Such as Ledger having make up on his fingers to imply he applied it himself, and the Murcielago being spanish for Bat. You can tell that they put so much passion and detail into this film. You just don't see that very often anymore, especially for a trademark and franchise that has been around for as long as Batman.

@JTKatz079 жыл бұрын
Yes it was confirmed by Warner Bros. that Joker has a background in the military. If you add up all the back stories and quotes Joker says throughout you can paint a consistent story to his origin. Joker lived with an abusive alcoholic father he later joined a gang (redhood) and then enlisted in the military. An IED explosion blew up and shrapnel caused his scars and disfiguration. He returned to a corrupt government, and a girlfriend/wife who was horrified by his appearance. This would've occurred over months possibly years but to PTSD Joker all it felt like to him was just one bad day.
@WalterLiddy9 жыл бұрын
First of all, the whole point is there IS no definitive background for the Joker. Second, as someone pointed out if he'd been in the military they'd have had no problem identifying him by his prints/DNA, so he clearly was not. There IS no 'TRUE' background because he's a fictional character with a deliberately ambiguous background. Trying to 'solve' this question is like trying to divide by zero - mental masturbation.
@repinswatson64529 жыл бұрын
WalterLiddy he didn't have fingerprints right? Plus any good hacker can get rid of that info.
@JTKatz079 жыл бұрын
WalterLiddy Joker didn't reveal his finger prints because they didn't have them on file. When you're arrested police scan your prints to see if you are in their program. And just because he was in the military doesn't mean they can find his identity like that. Joker could have gone AWOL, used someone else's identity when fighting etc... Joker in the comics doesn't have a back story due to the chemical vat he fell into that warped his mind. Nolan's Joker has a back story and intentionally leaves it ambiguous

I can't wait until Dunkirk comes out. One of the reasons that Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was so super successful is that he made it look and feel so real (something that the Marvel people have yet to accomplish). So put that ability into Nolan directing a true World War II story and you've got a recipe for one hell of a movie.

So that president guy of Batman sued Nolan for copy right, in 2008, like you said it was the first movie without BATMAN in the title so what.? Also Bats made his first appearance in FRICKN' 1939 made popular in the mid 40's, had Bizllions of comics in the 50's, THREE TV shows in the 60's (the iconic Adam West 1966) 1989's Batman the most popular comic movie ever, the crappy/ cheesy 90's,2005, 2007 when the movie was probably announced, nope he waits until a movie without his country's name to sue.

And here's a fact that even the creators of this video (even they) probably didn't know. Heath Ledger's Joker was largely influenced by Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse films. Christopher Nolan said: "I think I made Jonah watch Fritz Lang’s Dr Mabuse prior to writing the Joker…" Jonah being Christopher Nolan's brother who wrote the script with him. Definitely recommend checking out both parts of "Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler" and "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse". The similarities are really strong and beyond subtle, though Heath Ledger's Joker is definitely still his own character.

You know that scene where the Joker tries to blow up the hospital, but doesn't get NEARLY as big a boom as he expected, so he starts banging on his detonator? AD-LIBBED! Heath Ledger made up that little skit, and everyone liked it so much, and it fit the Joker's character so well, they kept it and SFX modified what they were going to do in post accordingly.

The whole idea of him being ex-military makes a lot of sense, in the one scene where he's turning Harvey dent into two face in the hospital he says something along the lines of if you tell people a truck full of soldiers will be blown up no one cares, but if one government official is threatened everyone loses their minds. And that idea could also be where he actually got his scars.

One thing about not being able to turn his head... There is actually a good reason to design the suit/headpiece like that. The solid (presumably armored) neck means he can't have his throat cut, can't be strangled, and won't suffer from whiplash (such as when he's doing ridiculous jumps in the Batmobile or getting punched in the head).
