One of my favorite "things" about this movie is that Paramount disliked the lack of violence so much in this film that they threatened to hire a "violence director" to direct the violence for the movie. When Coppola got wind of this, he took matters into his own hands and shot the "Sonny's Assassination" scene (as well as the domestic abuse scene) as graphically violent as possible to silence Paramount and get them off his back.

Back in the 70's, I worked with a bloke who had come out from Sicily as a child with his parents, so they mostly spoke a Sicilian Italian dialect at home. He told me that most of the Italian dialogue in the move was so authentic that they even used Sicilian slang and insults and curses. He said watching the movie was like listening to his father and uncles arguing after they all had a bit too much wine in them!

Here's another tidbit of information. The hospital scenes were filmed at three different hospitals. The interiors where Michael protects his dad were shot at Eye and Ear Hospital on 13th Street and 2nd Ave. The exterior (where the taxi rolls up and Michael gets slugged by McCluskey) is the 29th St. entrance of Bellevue Hospital (with additional close-ups of Michael and Enzo standing on steps re-created on Paramount's back lot in Hollywood). But the last scene of the hospital where Vito Corleone is driven home from the hospital by police escort was filmed in the Bronx at Lincoln Medical Center (no longer in existence).

Pacino played role so macabre! In the beginning, he took his WASP girlfriend to party, still wearing his American Marine uniform, showing how much he wanted this to not be his family. "That's them, not me Kate" as he relates 'offer he couldn't refuse' story. One of strongest, non verbal scenes in cinema, is his face in restaurant right before he shoot Sollazo and McClusky. He truly was as crossroad of life. One path, leave restaurant, leave family let Sonny handle it, go back to life he expressed he wanted with Kate, other path, that we see, that literally changed full course of life. He never seemed happy with that course, did great 'job' in world he really didn't want, even to point of driving his brother to assist in attempting murder on him and then having same brother later killed, to ultimately having his daughter die in his arms as result of his world. Not likely any of those other actors mentioned for part, could have pulled this tragic tale off.

Not really that much. Even the dialogue is nearly the same. There's a lot more sex. The book has the Sicily scenes from GF Part 2; Vito's mother doesn't die in the book. Also, Lucy, Sonny's mistress, has a subplot that fleshes out the Las Vegas story. Finally, it includes Johnny Fontaine's story after he gets the movie, which I like a lot more than Lucy's parts. In all, I think it shows how the Family's influence is a broad network of loyal retainers in many walks of life, whose actions help and harm society to varying degrees.

Part 1 and 2 are really good, above decent movies. But why can't Godfather fans realize that Micheal's story had to come to an end?? Part II shows Micheal fully embracing and entering into the Mafia life. But Part III is the ending that Michael and this movie deserved. There had to be some retribution or reckoning for his sins. I don't know why Godfather fans can't realize that Godfather Part III was an excellent movie and I'll go out on a limb here and say it was the best. Pacino's best acting of the series was in III especially that diabetic stroke/heart attack he suffers. That scene was priceless. People just hate on III because of Sofia Coppola. He didn't hire his daughter out of nepotism! Winona Ryder was already cast and had arrived to play the part of Mary, but she was suffering from deep exhaustion and overwork because she just wrapped filming another movie. She just wasn't acting natural. The movie was already behind schedule and over budget so Francis and Pacino thought of giving Sophia a shot, and by this time they had no choice but to cast her as searching and auditioning for another actress would be way too time consuming. In the end I'm glad they gave Sophia the role as she looked more like an average human being and bought reality to the movie instead of a typical very beautiful actress taking the part. I just can't agree with anyone who disses Part III. It was nominated for around 8 Oscars. But that year Dances with Wolves and Goodfellas were also running in competition. That was the year for Dances with Wolves, and rightfully so. And it was a weird year in which so many good movies had been released. Very few movies in the history of cinema would be able to beat out Dances with Wolves for Best Picture.
@faisalmemon2857 жыл бұрын
How the frick did it "ruin the trilogy"???? If heard that argument before and it's stupid each time. You're just bathing in nostalgia and when 1990 comes around and you see "Godfather Part III" splattered all over cinema walls you go "How dare they!!!" What type of ending did you want for Micheal Corleone? That he becomes President? That he gains super powers and is now head of The Avengers? Get a life. Besides, one thing Godfather fans fail to comprehend is that parts 1 and 2 never really show or describe what makes the Corleone family mafia in the first place? They don't deal in drugs. That means they don't have any right to any territory as territory in mafia terminology is "territory where you can deal drugs" unless of course they're collecting "protection money" from the businesses that run in that territory and that they make 5% off every crime committed in that territory, etc. They just show Vito as some sort of Robin Hood who's protecting the neighborhood. "Robin Hood" is the exact polar opposite of "Mafia." They never show Vito going store to store saying give me 5-10% of your profits or we'll break you're windows. Instead Coppola just shows that the Corleone's muscle their way into Vegas as if Vegas is what the mafia is all about. They get they're gaming licenses under they're own names albeit by blackmailing a senator, but nonetheless, no other Mafia crime family has directly run a casino under they're own name. They've always used a proxy. So the Corleone's are running a casino full 100% legit. While I think ALL THREE are excellent films, believe me no mafia family has ever been so classy and upscale as the Corleone's. Sonny's fatherless children end up going to Harvard for pete's sake if you've seen The Godfather Epic!! I can assure you no one ever associated with the mafia has ever gotten into Harvard Law or Business School.

Also "Dancing with Wolves" has won more awards than all three Godfather films combined. Anyone who discredits Dances has no understanding of cinema whatsoever, so no use arguing with such a person. You're just one of those gangster film junkies who thinks they know what gangster is but really have no knowledge on the subject whatsoever. People like you say that Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, etc. are better than and should be considered better than let's say.....every movie ever made, including Saving Private Ryan, Paths of Glory, Star Wars, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Schindler's List, Gandhi......well you get the point. But then again I don't think you do.

So you appreciate good acting but Al Pacino in Godfather Part III has ruined your life.

I agree it's unfairly hated on (mainly because people act like it invalidated the whole series) but you overstep when you say it's the best lol I mean come on.

Cool that Sofia Copolla is the baby being baptized! Classic film of all time.
