@@metaparcel i understand it. People including myself want Rolex even though there are many brands that offer same or better quality watches because of their prestige. Rolex lost control of their product because of the AD selling watches out tye back door. The bottom line is you can have pretty much any Rolex you want. I look, there are literally thousands of subs and Daytonas on grey market.why so hard to get at an AD? These are mass produced

For me, there's one simple rule. Do not walk into a Rolex AD. Period. They are great watches, among the best of the best, but I'm not jumping through hoops to be "allowed" to buy something. Just the fact that you can be "disqualified" makes me never want to own a Rolex. I'll stick with my Omegas. This is a great video for those who do hope to own a Rolex someday and I hope you all get the watch you want.

It's interesting how things appear to have changed over the years. I shopped stores that were ADs for Rolex and Breitling 20 years ago and brought the watch model (Breitling) that I wanted and the dealer wanted to sell me a Rolex as well (and I had never purchased a luxury watch before that). Now it sounds like Seinfeld's soup Nazi scenario. I guess if buyers are willing to go through this for a particular watch I hope it's worth the hit to their dignity in exchange.

I thought about it, grey market is just selling things at market value. They don’t ask you to kiss their asses and give up your dignity to buy a watch. You just get it at market value. What Rolex is doing is BS. I run several businesses and if the demand is higher than supply I either produce more to match the demand or raise the prices to lower demand. Rolex and other companies are artificially creating scarcity and making you play this BS. I’m going to go grey market. The opportunity cost of playing this game is more than going to the grey market a lot of times.

I got the batgirl gmt master ii as my first watch at the AD in March of 2021. I was 22 years old and I spent $300 before getting the call after a 4 month wait. I didn’t have any help from anyone. I dressed up, I spoke professionally, I had an explanation of why I needed a gmt function and why the only watch I was interested in was the 126710BLNR. I focused on a small market family owned AD. Won’t work for everyone but worked for me 👍

When you drive to your AD: don't ever put one hand on the steering wheel, never let go of your cell phone with the other (even during surgery), don't ever wear a Cartier, don't wear trainers the size of a landing craft, don't give your AD a box of chocolates, a kiss, a head-butt or a handshake incorporating more than 3 separate cultural stereotypes.... Just point at a watch you don't want.

I bought a Rolex at an upscale Rolex store in Providence and one in Boston and they can be a little stuffy, but you can 100 percent get what you want and walk out with a watch that day (unless you’re looking for a stainless Daytona with the white or black dial or something crazy that they don’t have. Even getting on the waiting list takes some doing.). But I walked out with a gmt anniversary. I walked out with a yacht master/black strap.

Koda loved it and we talked to the manager for a while after the purchase. When you spend 11k, on a luxury item, I don’t care what people say. You better provide that deserved service. @Raptor178 Жыл бұрын
That’s not exclusivity, because you can go to any gray market dealer and find pretty much almost any style Rolex you can think of. You just would have to pay 2x if not more over retail. If you want to call it something you can call it shady business on the AD so called sale people. Pretty much hustle you into buying shit you don’t want to get what you truly want.
@itsdyl1031
@itsdyl1031 Жыл бұрын
@@Raptor178 I’m not a proponent for that practice. I’m just saying they want to make it hard to buy their watches to ween out certain buyers
@Raptor178
@Raptor178 Жыл бұрын
I’m all for that 100%, but me myself personally I can afford a Rolex with budgeting my finances with that said I can’t just walking in to an AD and spent 10,15,30 thousand on other items just to spend another 10- 20 thousand on a Rolex that I want. So the idea of trying to ween out certain buyers sounds great, but let’s be real what they are doing is weening out buyers like me who can’t help them meet their sales goal with other item. And selling to so call watch collectors who slide them a few hundred or thousand under the table, or buying other items to help their sale goals. I know for a fact that these AD sellers know that they are selling watches to gray market dealers just because one hand washes the other.

I was in an AD a few weeks ago to register my interest in a date just. Was initially looking at the new breitling superoceans then made our way to rolex. After officially registering interest in 2 date just models the AD showed me a Pepsi GMT (exhibition model of course) I tried it on and we were talking about how rare they are etc and he told me to take a pic of it on my wrist if I wanted to. I did take the photo, I’m wondering what your thoughts are on that interaction? Would you think that disqualified me since I never asked about the GMT nor did I even register my interest in it. The only way this "game" they make you play for the steel sports models makes sense to me is if they were so exclusive, they weren't for sale anywhere, for any price. The only way to get one would be after X amount of $ spent, they'd eventually offer you the one you want for free. This makes sense because everyone knows what the rules of the game are; simply spend the $. And people would do it because there's a real incentive - you get your grail watch for free. The prestige in owning one would go through the damn roof.

The most important thing that should be added is you must have knowledge on the watches and show them that you are passionate about all watches. Not just only Rolex. That will get them to offer you pieces you never thought you would be able to see in an ad much less buy. Knowledge and confidence gets you everything in this life. Display that you will be fine. They had a few Langes in the case and made it clear I was looking at them only. Got on the list for a blue dial OP and left-handed GMT and purchased a Tudor Pelagos and a Grand Seiko as my buy in to say. Within a week had both Rolexes and they put me on the list for a Daytona white dial and he emailed me to let me know I'm on the Titanium Yachtmaster list also. @Tommy_ZM
@Tommy_ZM Жыл бұрын
Historically, it was the non-professional models that were easy to get. Datejust’s, precious metals, two tone pieces etc. The best Rolex’s to get in terms of value and prestige will always be the Submariner (preferably not the standard all black one), the GMT, or the Daytona. These watches are in demand in the entire world, and of course an AD is going to sell to their high spend trusted clients who buy jewelry and lesser in demand watches rather than a random person who is only interested in the hardest to get watches. Anyone who owned an AD would be doing the same. Therefore you either need help from someone, you need to buy other stuff before going after a hard to get piece, or you simply buy what you want on the secondary market for a premium. A yacht master, air king, explorer, or milgauss are lesser Rolex’s that aren’t nearly as popular. They’re not flagship models, but they have their unique history and some people like the understated look. You may have to wait to buy these but it shouldn’t be that long

I have purchased two watches from a AD a year apart and it was nothing like you are describing I told them right away what I wanted and because it wasn’t in the store it was ordered for me right away both times. I did have to wait awhile to get them but that is a given. If the watch is not just available it takes Rolex a year to make one and others may be waiting ahead of you for the same watch but your wait is shorter if the one you want doesn’t have as many people wanting that particular style. I just ordered my third one yesterday easy as can be. Never did they try to tell me what they think I should do.

This isn't always true. I just got the sport model that I wanted as my first Rolex after a 3 month wait. I spoke a lot and explained my situation to the salesperson, I told them about the watches that I really want and said I was only interested in a sport models and also hope for a Daytona one day, I tried a few models on and took pictures of various models on my wrist, I spoke to the AD like I would speak to anyone else I do in life. I did most of the things here that were listed as don't and I got exactly what I wanted with a short wait. In my opinion buying what you want shouldn't feel like you have to pretend to be someone that your not, I think being genuine is the most important thing, trying to build a personal connection with a salesperson helps. I do agree that you need to do what you can to make sure you don't appear to be a flipper.

Been buying Rolex’s since the early nineties. Bought my first one because I noticed a pretty girl working at the AD in the mall where I was shopping and getting lunch. The transaction took only a few minutes and she was happy she’d made a sale. The AD’s are running a game because they control the supply. There’s no shortage of watches and if everyone would hold off on buying for 1 year the AD’s would stop playing games and things would normalize. The AD’s created the gray market with straw men. The grey market dealers are associates of the AD’s. So don’t buy from them. Just don’t buy. All these scumbags will starve together. The ADs won’t be able to stay in business and will be forced to into a situation where they’re not in control. They’re watches nothing more. Don’t let some scammers take advantage of you. That’s what AD’s are nowadays, they’re scammers.

The market is coming down so fast that I think in a few months you should be able to buy most on gray market for subs and gmt within 20 percent of what it’s msrp is. I will support the high end resellers if I can buy and only be charged 10-20 percent markup. In about a year the used worn Rolex on at least half of the models will be under msrp. Supply will catch demand now that so much demand is falling and so many of the buyers over last 12 months only bought to sell so there is a huge supply that will start selling.

“Don’t ask for the watch you want” doesn’t make sense. I asked for the specific reference I was interested in. The next one makes more sense with asking for a professional model. But I asked for what I wanted and have received every reference I asked the salesperson for.

The don't tell them you sold a watch isn't true. I have sold watches after 1-2years of ownership and my AD knows this. I still get given watches. I think problem arises when you don't have a relationship built with your AD and/or sell the watch very soon after purchasing it.
@WatchClyde
@WatchClyde Жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on the head..if you have a relationship with a salesperson sure they’ll possibly overlook it if you mentioned you sold the Submariner you bought from an AD 4 years ago for example. But a new customer doesn’t have that luxury.
@RobinsM
@RobinsM Жыл бұрын
Awful advice simply shop around to as many dealers as you can or put your name down and wait that’s it. They make a million watches a year you’re acting as if you’re trying to get a platinum Daytona or rainbow. Most people are stopping in for a submariner go 2-3 times and just keep asking and checking for the same thing and then when it comes it comes and you’re next in line/ list that’s it.
@WatchClyde
@WatchClyde Жыл бұрын
My friend the main point of the video was to bring humor to the ridiculous process the majority of first time buyers have to go through…sure there’s some exceptions where some people get what they want on the first or second visit…and about the list do you really want to wait 1-2 years for a steel submariner? Some of the watches aren’t impressive and worth the wait…if it was a Patek then that’s a different story…

@as10076 - Good luck on your purchase! Hopefully they are treating you with respect. Supply shortages on a model you want for MSRP that results in a waiting period is fair. However, an AD requiring you to have a “relationship” with them and kissing their ass, promising to them you won’t resale, and buying what ever they suggest, etc.. because that’s just “how they roll” is bullshit. An iconic brand like Rolex should take lessons from Louis Vuitton. I reluctantly went shopping there while in Paris with my fiancé. We waited in line to get in, but were treated like royalty during our shopping experience. Champagne, espresso, jokes, laughter, free perfume and cologne samples, pictures etc. It was a true shopping experience, so much so, I actually ended up buying a “sling” lol. High end retail should cater to their customers needs and make them feel appreciated, not the other way around.
@as10076
@as10076 Жыл бұрын
My experience at the AD was very positive. I was dressed in t shirt cargo pants with no expensive watch on my wrist but was still treated as if I walked in with a suit. I have since went back to show my wife the watch I want and again treated very respectively by a different sales person. I told him about my prior trip and about being placed on a list. He pulled out an iPad and asked for my name. He then ran it, found my name on the list, the watch I wanted, and the special meaning behind the purchase. All written down by the prior salesperson. Also I have never step foot in this store as I don’t purchase jewelry. Maybe I get it maybe I don’t. Rolex may determine if I get watch but they do not determine the value of who I am. Period.

@@drknight27 LV is not a luxury brand. It`s a brand that focuses on making poor people feel rich. They are owned by LVMH which is a publicly traded company. This means their focus is more on making a profit for their shareholders. No true luxury brand is publicly owned. Especially watches, they are thinking 50 - 100 years ahead, not the next earnings cycle.
