My nightmare Rolex Authorized Dealer Experience was a total nightmare - I have heard of what can happen when you visit a Rolex Boutique... everything from, not getting into a Boutique to being made to buy a watch you don't want in order to be considered for one you do want. Up until this week I couldn't believe it, but now I do. This is what happened when I went into a Rolex Boutique this week in Sydney.
To be clear, I never expected to walk in and "score" the watch I wanted straight away - I simply wanted to try on the watches they had as "exhibition" pieces and included a couple of the models I love. The actual AD was condescending and rude.
Classic Quote "Those are the watches you get at the end of your [Rolex] collection, not the beginning"
Thanks as always for watching, Jess x

I still don’t get your complaint? Makes sense that he showed you only exhibition watches - as this is all most AD’s have in their stores. And he seemed he was attentive enough to show you watch after watch when he knew he had nothing to sell you. And exhibition watches are all out in the cases for everyone to see. Having an opportunity to try on a number of different Rolex models is a gift for most Rolex fans. And you could have gotten on a LIST at that AD as well but being on a list for the most popular Rolex models. The reality if that AD gets a Batman 95% of the time it will be offered to a customer that has done business with that store for years and has bought both in good economic periods and bad. Your salesman was trying to guide you to a watch model that he could actually perhaps obtain for you as a new customer of his store. He was giving you good advice. Many AD shops may only get one or two Batman models a year. I had a SA salesman tell me they often get skews of calls everyday asking to buy the in demand models - like the Batman or submariner and get asked to be put on their “list”. I don’t think you understand how few of these in demand watches an AD shop actually receives each year, the Datejust is a great watch and built in the largest number by Rolex so an excellent choice as a first watch. Personally I think Rolex should allow dealers to charge whatever price they want for their inventory. This would allow anyone to walk in and buy a new Rolex at least and the value over msrp would Inure to the actual dealers and not the customer or these second hand watch dealers. And not everyone can afford a $20,000 Batman Rolex watch which is the real value not the msrp that dealers are forced to sell at by Rolex. Panerai watches are not Rolex watches - easy to find and typically easy to get a discount from a dealer. Rolex is unique in the world of horological competition. I apologize for the goofball comment. Your just I’ll- informed about the Rolex market as many new collectors are unfortunately. If you really want a brand new Batman someday and don’t want to pay a premium of almost double the msrp to a second market dealer- then find an AD that sells other jewelry and other watches and find a sales person that has been at that store for years- best this person should be the owner- and start buying your wife birthday and Xmas presents from this dealer and make sure he knows what watch you want but also let him know of a Datejust model you like as well as the holy grail model you would like to buy. You need a relationship not with even the store but a particular salesman. The hot watches are sent to the store and then they are allocated to each salesman typically by their sales of other products or by selling say a lot of the ladies Rolex models which are not in high demand. Help a salesman get more allocations of hot watches by buying from them other watches and jewelry. The store also has to believe you won’t take a Rolex they sell you and flip it to the second market dealers as they can lose their franchise if Rolex finds too many of their inventory was flipped. Your Panerai on your wrist helped convince him your a collector and not just there to make a fast buck which is why he spent the time to show you a lot of watches that now I understand he was not trying to sell you as they are all exhibition watches. Good luck on your search --

@@jeffreykilpatrick3592 you don't get the point. If you go in a car dealership looking for a BMW to purchase and all they show you are Toyota vehicles, that is not what the customer is looking for and wanting to purchase. They are wasting their time and hers when they could have been up front and show what was requested. If you don't work with a customer, you won't be in sales very long.

Rolex dealers tend to forget that they aren't the only one in town with often a way more interesting history. Don't get me wrong. I love the Rolex design but I doubt many people care enough to be ridiculed around like many ADs have. Rolex should really fix that. Other high end brands manage to do well while actually being good to their customers. Hell, the Casio authorized dealers offer great experiences and their watch price range are between 30 bucks to under 4.5k. Not 5k+

Love the video! I live in Nashville TN and had a terrible experience at the local AD, they literally was told we only sell Rolex to special customers. I just happened to be in Evansville IN and walked in to an AD off the street and purchased a Datejust for my wife I was treated wonderfully. I have since purchased 5 other Rolex's from them including some other jewelry. I guess I'm special in another state, just not in my hometown. LOL

This is the exact opposite of my experience back in 2003. I wanted a no-date Sub, and there was one in the window of Watches of Switzerland near where I worked. The price was around £1,900, which, adjusted for inflation, would now be about £2,800 ($3,346) at the time of writing. It was there for a few weeks, and I stopped to look at it every day on my way home from work. I eventually talked myself into buying it, walked in, and asked to look at it. The salesperson was lovely, and asked me if I wanted to look at any other watches, but when I told her i had my heart set on the Submariner, she rang me up straight away. The whole process took about 15 minutes, and 10 of those minutes were them getting the bracelet adjusted just right for me. From what I understand, this experience now seems to be a thing of the past. The idea of being able to walk in off the street and buy a steel Submariner would be a pipe dream today.

Watches were expensive but not THAT expensive. I didn't buy it because I had bought a Speedmaster Reduced a week earlier (for £700 new). I did think of doing a trade of sorts but I didn't. First AD promised me a YM if I bought a Cartier Santos Second AD told me they'd consider it if I bought an El Primero Third AD told me I'd need to spend about 10k to be eligible Fourth was the Rolex boutique which put me on a "waitlist" 9 months ago with no updates. I had a different experience altogether. At this time last year, I was looking for a Tudor BB58 Blue and found a Tudor AD near me that had one in bracelet. I spoke to a nice gentleman and he reserved the watch for me, went in the next day and paid for it. After 2 months or so, I was itching to get the Tudor GMT Pepsi, and called him again, he was able to source one in a bracelet in about a month or so, keep in mind that Tudors in bracelets had a wait in most ADs last year. After purchasing the GMT, he casually asked me if there was anything else I was interested in or looking to get in the future, I told him that I maybe saving up for a Rolex if I can even get one given the issue with waitlists. He then, quietly tells me to be patient and leave it up to him. About close to 3 months in and I eventually received a call for the Sub Date. All in all, I think it was the relationship I have built with that gentleman that got me the Sub. He knows that I am a repeat customer and not a flipper. I am now on a waitlist for a GMT Master II Pepsi.

Much longer than that. I bought a new GMT from a AD, and later expressed interest in purchasing a Daytona. The salesperson (claimed to) put me on the waitlist. I would call every couple of months afterward for a year or so to inquire, but was told to be patient and they would call. After 22 years I'm still waiting to hear from them! This is how a repeat customers get treated?!!! They even denied that a waitlist existed, and then turned around and told the local newspaper there IS one. If anything, they tend to be terrible liars.

I got mine in 1998, I went into the biggest supposedly best watch shop in the city. Told them exactly what I wa wanted, the model, which bracelet, colour of the dial, which markers I wanted at the hour markers (this is back when they had every colour and style of dial you can imagine). They told me "sorry we don't see many like that". And virtually showed me the door. I went around the corner to what I thought was an independent jewellers, turned out they had been taken over years ago and were owned by the same company as the first shop. The experience was totally different. They sat me down, apologised for not having what I wanted showed me a few similar watches. Then said leave me your number and we will see what we can find. They called back the next day, said we found one in another store, we are having it couriered to us, we will have it in the morning. 24 years later, I have worn that watch every day.

Agree - the car analogy is perfect. Would love to see the AD manager’s face when treated like a pleb and told to buy a less desirable model first. And they know that their ‘loyal’ customers will either a) flip the watch immediately or after getting bored with it; won’t be upset if they don’t get EVERY watch they want. The chance to build a bigger base of customers - but they blow it with greed and arrogance.

I don't think these thoughts were the reason for this treatment. She had a recommendation as a client of a boutique under the same umbrella (or group) - meaning she was known as a watch lover. There was no reason what so ever for that treatment at all. It should have been possible (or otherwise the gentleman should have told the client that the watches she was interested in are not currently available and to fix another appointment when these watches were available again.) This experience was so bad that she won't go to this boutique again! Even the brand *Rolex* might become shadowed (for her). You might prefer other brands before making another weird expierience with Rolex again. Even your Ferrari example won't stand the test! When a wellknown person wants to buy the model you mention he'll get it at once without having owned any previous models. It's like if Roger Federer (as a Rolex embassador) wants any model he'll get it at once (without any waiting list at all)! 😇

The whole process took about an hour and I walked out of the store wearing my new watch. I can't believe you guys go through all of this just for a watch.

LOL. Welcome to my world. I have been collecting over 40yrs. It was not always this way. There was a time when you could go a Rolex boutique, find any watch and get a discount. About 5 years ago this all change. Worse of all my Rolex dealer closed. With my current dealer I have purchased over 100K worth of watches that I really wanted. F.P Journe,,A Lange, etc. Three years ago I ask for a Rolex Sky dweller in steel. Still waiting. I am now 65 years old. Will I know what a watch is in 10 years?.

Once the real issues with the economy get rolling, many ADs will fold up, especially ones that were shady all along. Give it a couple of years, maybe sooner and you'll get any Rolex you want at a nice discount...unless Rolex decides to buy them back to continue this artificial scarcity. Cartier a couple of years back bought back a bunch of watches as they couldn't be sold at retail price. My local Omega Boutique closed down as they couldn't sell enough watches. And this is in a very wealthy area of the city I live in, so there are problems but it's Rolex creating this artificial scarcity that creates this problem. Wait until the fall harvest of grain is reported and many of these Rolex buyers will be more worried about buying enough food versus getting that Pepsi GMT.

In January, I dropped into my nearest AD here in Japan asking about the new 36 mm Explorer (all-steel version). Was treated very coolly by the sales staff. They had no watches to look at or try on. They showed me the watch I wanted in the catalogue but showed no interest in engaging with me as to how I might go about getting the watch. No waiting lists in operation, and I was just told to call back from time to time on the chance they might have some new stock. The sales person refused to give me one of her business cards when I asked: She clearly didn’t want to see me again. I was so annoyed by the way I was treated, the next day I went online and ordered the Explorer from a grey market outlet in Osaka that I’ve used before. There was a substantial markup, of course - about 50% up on the RRP, which did make me wince a bit - but 4 days later the watch was delivered and I’ve worn it every day since. Part of the satisfaction of wearing it is remembering the unhelpful way I was treated by the AD, and knowing I got the watch I wanted regardless.

Just come across your channel. Good to see someone report on their Sydney watch buying experiences. This sounds like Kennedy. How do I know? Until recently, Kennedy owned the stand alone boutiques for Panerai, IWC and JLC in King St Sydney - but now these boutiques have gone back under the Richemont umbrella and are standalone (so any spend history with Kennedy will now be null and void). I also was given the same spiel by the Kennedy Rolex 'Sales Associates' (if you can really call them that) - "sir a GMT or Daytona is something you get at the end of your Rolex journey". At least with the other boutiques (Swiss Concept, Watches of Switzerland, J Farren Price) - they tell you straight up that they won't sell you a Rolex, at least not until you've bought plenty of other less desirables. I left one boutique off the list as I've had a great experience with them (The Hour Glass). Look reality is - unless you're a big spender within the umbrella of a particular boutique (>$100k minimum over a 3-5 year span), you're not getting a Sub, GMT, Daytona, or any of the other hot models (this includes anything with precious metal bar some of the less desirable two-tones). The models you were shown are not the most desirable Rolex pieces. If you said you liked one of the models offered (Yachtmaster II TT, DateJust non-fluted on Oyster, Sea-Dweller 43 non-red, Milgauss Z-Blue, Air King 2022, Explorer II Polar) you would have got the call for it within a couple of weeks (even though they probably could have given it to you right away - they still need to create the scarcity marketing vibe). None of this is going to change either, even though secondary market pricing on Rolex is coming back to more reasonable levels. The ADs still need to get the punters in buying other less desirable watches and jewellery.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, yes given that video is months old now I can happily admit it was Kennedy. My original Panerai contact has remained with Panerai thank goodness, but I will never go back to the Sydney rolex store owned by Kennedy. So technically my spending history was actually relevant at the time... but that didn't matter and it also appeared those watches were sitting on my wife's profile, so the funniest part was he told me she had to come in. When I said she can only come in on a Saturday, he replied, oh well we don't take appointments Saturdays so she'll have to line up. Needless to say she said no way, they can get lost. I agreed with her. I think the arrogance of some AD's is unbelievable, you can still be honest and create exclusivity without being a total douche bag.

Agree with the vid feedback. Some pompous ADs giving you the eye over and you feel judged silently from their responses. Genuine customer centricity is absent when you feel judged. Especially when buying your first Rolex. It doesn’t hurt to be kind and gracious both ways and to find that sales person whom you click with. Never tell any customer which Rolex they can or cannot buy “based on purchase history” - it’s a big put off. Ridiculous approach. By all means discern who are serious genuine and ideal customers but do so tactfully and always give them what they are really looking for. A relationship is always a two-way street which brings out the best in both. So I find chemistry with the right sales person is important. So is mutual respect and genuine help both ways. It helps to really like the sales person you are dealing with before you buy a Rolex costing much. I wouldn’t buy from someone I don’t connect with for the longer term. Then it’s just a “transaction- only” scenario - possible but anaemic if one really wants to build a Rolex collection whatever its size. I suspect where they are now, Rolex wants good, loyal customers who feel for the brand and relish their Rolex ownership; the challenge is getting a good AD which trains all its sales staff to understand relationship-building with customers first - before the actual buy stage.

I'm thinking first time luxury watch buyers, or people slowly upgrading to that luxury price they always wanted, when they go in and are treated this way it's despicable. But Instagram and a lot of KZbin as well as Rolex marketing from 80 years to now has everyone convinced that Rolex is the best, the top, the ultimate..... it just isn't

I was very lucky way back 2013 when the SA allowed me to try Submariner and Explorer 2 even though I haven't got any buying history from that shop. It's Goldsmith at Trafford Center. Gutted that I didn't bought that time, it was only 5,000£ for the Submariner If I can remember correctly.

By the way, it's pronounced "mill gouse" rhymes with "house" and I agree with you that the blue dial, green sapphire crystal isn't very attractive. My son works around an electron microscope and is just the person this watch was made for, but I went with the black dial and regular crystal when I bought him a Milgauss. Not the prettiest Rolex, but far from the ugliest.

I think your sales rep did try to sell you a watch given he did not want to turn you off. The rep was using a technique called “selling what’s in stock”. The rep knew that the GMT and Sub were not in stock and yet did not turn you away. Here in the states the AD just says they have Exhibition Only watches and you have to beg to try one on. My advice is that if you really want the GMT, go buy it from a trusted grey market dealer or from the Rolex CPO program. Else, just continue to be patient.

If they're selling them at retail prices, then this is a standard practice for Authorized Dealers for a few reasons: 1) Most people buy them and flip them for 2x to 3x what they paid for it the next day. 2) Feeding off of #1, the demand for them is insane!!! If an AD had them available to anyone who walks in they'd never have one. EVER!

If they have one in the shop though (like they did in this instance) then they're not exactly welcoming people to the brand in the correct manner by going about business like this. If they have the watch then sell the watch. I agree with this woman, its absurd. You wouldn't put up with this behaviour buying a loaf of bread never mind a 10k+ watch. Imagine nipping into the supermarket and getting told 'Ah sorry you can't buy milk till you buy several of our unpopular products first. We need to see buying history first'. You'd be like 'Yeah no probs mate, can you just grab this basket for me while I fuck off over the road to your competitor'

Taking into consideration how things are with PP,AP, RM and Rolex for the past couple of years… Sounds to me like that AD actually tried very hard to get you on the path for the *Hyped* pieces you wanted. There are a lot of real enthusiasts out there, that have been on waiting lists for years or that have bought other watches prior to getting allocated that specific one they wanted. I’m sorry, I just don’t understand why you think you’re any different from any other client? 🤷‍♂️ Because of a few Breitlings and Pam’s? You want a GMT Pepsi , Batman or a Sub which are Rolex SS sports watches. Super Hyped choice for an enthusiast as literally everyone wants them. You’re on KZbin for a minute, hence you know how hard it can be to obtain (for retail) even the ones you were initially offered. I understand your frustration but tbh what did you expect? Maybe next time ask for a Panda Daytona for a first watch and see how that goes. Or you could pay the premium and buy elsewhere. Not trying to be rude, it’s just that your reaction seems over dramatic. Great channel and content btw. Cheers.

Exactly the same experience I have here in malaysia. They make you spend on watches you are not interested in before even considering to release the piece you wish to buy. Then again, there's no guarantee you'll ever get to buy the one you like. Totally ridiculous. What I can say is that these situation is also contributed by the flippers friends they have. I would safely say that all the desired pieces have gone out the back door to their buddies and "partners in crime". Also a reason why we can see all the pieces available in the reseller shops and none in the AD

Went to my local Ben Bridge that I do have a purchase history with to inquire about getting a Rolex, was basically told my chances of getting one were slim to none. Went to the Tourneau Rolex boutique (no purchase history) and was able to chat with one of the SAs about watches, expressed my interest in a Submariner, and was told by the SA he would try to make it happen. Over the next couple months, he reached out to me and offered a Submariner date on two occasions, but I said I'd wait for the no date. I eventually got the call for my desired watch just under 3 months after that first visit which was very exciting because I'd been prepared to wait anywhere from 1 year to eternity based on hearing stories such as these. It just goes to show that you need to find an AD that cares about selling watches to actual customers instead of maintaining an air of snobbish exclusivity (or backdooring their stock).

I've decided that come the day I can justify buying a new Rolex I won't be a slave to Rolex and the AD's - "sell it to me or not" - I'm not bothered. It's harder to justify when there are very good (and better value) alternatives (like Omega) and being mugged for wearing an expensive watch seems to be getting more common.

The less popular models are 'not for me'. Dealer tried to help, and offered some models that were available, and was straightforward and honest when asked why I can't get the watches that are 'for me'. - Maybe the dealer was right. At least you were offered an Air King, Milgausse and Explorer II. None of these are available in the UK. In fact it’s so bad with the so called shortage of steel sports Rolexes that the factory have to lend the dealers ‘display models’ for the window which are not actually for sale! In my humble opinion Omega makes some great watches that are equally as well engineered as a Rolly and the dealers will actually sell you one!!

I feel your pain. Unfortunately your experience is duplicated all over the word at Rolex Boutiques & Authorized Dealers. The demand has been sky high for Rolex sports steel models and the AD's are caught between a rock and a hard place. The upcoming worldwide recession may make sports steel models more readily available at the boutiques. If you really want a Rolex sports steel model, you should buy on the grey market, so you do not have to buy a watch or Jewelery you don't need. A second choice is to buy other great brands like Omega.

I'm sorry you've had a terrible experience with that AD. I've been able to try on a few Rolexes at my preferred AD. They asked me if I liked the fact that I got to try it on, or that I felt disappointed that I couldn't just buy it then and there. I told them that I liked that I could try it on, because at least that would give me an indicator as to whether I really wanted it or not. They liked my answer. They also told me that they thought it crazy that some people would just want to buy any 10K+ watch without ever having at least seen it in person. Arrogance is something we can sorely do without in this industry. People forget that luxury watches are just expensive timekeeping devices. Nobody needs a watch because of the phones we carry. And if you don't carry a phone, you could get a Casio for 20$.

Not all Rolex ADs are this way. My AD has always been pretty honest about everything with me. They are trying to vet customers so they do not flip them to the gray market. Especially the hot models. I walked in a few years ago and told them I would like to buy a Pepsi at some point. I had not had a relationship with them at this point. They told me to keep checking in with them and form a relationship and they would get me the watch. I proceeded to stop in every once in a while. Got to know everyone at the store. Got to talk watches with some of the employees that like watches as much as I do. One day I walked in and they said they wanted to show me something. It was a Pepsi. They said it's yours if you want it. That was maybe a year and a half from when I first went in. Again, they are interested in building relationships with good people that they feel they can trust not to flip the watch. It's not like buying a TV with Rolex. You have to be patient. I've actually become good friends with the owners and some of the employees simply because of our love for watches and it's a nice relationship.
