I still don’t get your complaint? Makes sense that he showed you only exhibition watches - as this is all most AD’s have in their stores. And he seemed he was attentive enough to show you watch after watch when he knew he had nothing to sell you. And exhibition watches are all out in the cases for everyone to see. Having an opportunity to try on a number of different Rolex models is a gift for most Rolex fans. And you could have gotten on a LIST at that AD as well but being on a list for the most popular Rolex models. The reality if that AD gets a Batman 95% of the time it will be offered to a customer that has done business with that store for years and has bought both in good economic periods and bad. Your salesman was trying to guide you to a watch model that he could actually perhaps obtain for you as a new customer of his store. He was giving you good advice. Many AD shops may only get one or two Batman models a year. I had a SA salesman tell me they often get skews of calls everyday asking to buy the in demand models - like the Batman or submariner and get asked to be put on their “list”. I don’t think you understand how few of these in demand watches an AD shop actually receives each year, the Datejust is a great watch and built in the largest number by Rolex so an excellent choice as a first watch. Personally I think Rolex should allow dealers to charge whatever price they want for their inventory. This would allow anyone to walk in and buy a new Rolex at least and the value over msrp would Inure to the actual dealers and not the customer or these second hand watch dealers. And not everyone can afford a $20,000 Batman Rolex watch which is the real value not the msrp that dealers are forced to sell at by Rolex. Panerai watches are not Rolex watches - easy to find and typically easy to get a discount from a dealer. Rolex is unique in the world of horological competition. I apologize for the goofball comment. Your just I’ll- informed about the Rolex market as many new collectors are unfortunately. If you really want a brand new Batman someday and don’t want to pay a premium of almost double the msrp to a second market dealer- then find an AD that sells other jewelry and other watches and find a sales person that has been at that store for years- best this person should be the owner- and start buying your wife birthday and Xmas presents from this dealer and make sure he knows what watch you want but also let him know of a Datejust model you like as well as the holy grail model you would like to buy. You need a relationship not with even the store but a particular salesman. The hot watches are sent to the store and then they are allocated to each salesman typically by their sales of other products or by selling say a lot of the ladies Rolex models which are not in high demand. Help a salesman get more allocations of hot watches by buying from them other watches and jewelry. The store also has to believe you won’t take a Rolex they sell you and flip it to the second market dealers as they can lose their franchise if Rolex finds too many of their inventory was flipped. Your Panerai on your wrist helped convince him your a collector and not just there to make a fast buck which is why he spent the time to show you a lot of watches that now I understand he was not trying to sell you as they are all exhibition watches. Good luck on your search --

@@jeffreykilpatrick3592 you don't get the point. First AD promised me a YM if I bought a Cartier Santos Second AD told me they'd consider it if I bought an El Primero Third AD told me I'd need to spend about 10k to be eligible Fourth was the Rolex boutique which put me on a "waitlist" 9 months ago with no updates. This is the exact opposite of my experience back in 2003. I wanted a no-date Sub, and there was one in the window of Watches of Switzerland near where I worked. The price was around £1,900, which, adjusted for inflation, would now be about £2,800 ($3,346) at the time of writing. It was there for a few weeks, and I stopped to look at it every day on my way home from work. I eventually talked myself into buying it, walked in, and asked to look at it. The salesperson was lovely, and asked me if I wanted to look at any other watches, but when I told her i had my heart set on the Submariner, she rang me up straight away. The whole process took about 15 minutes, and 10 of those minutes were them getting the bracelet adjusted just right for me. From what I understand, this experience now seems to be a thing of the past. The idea of being able to walk in off the street and buy a steel Submariner would be a pipe dream today.

Told them exactly what I wa wanted, the model, which bracelet, colour of the dial, which markers I wanted at the hour markers (this is back when they had every colour and style of dial you can imagine). They told me "sorry we don't see many like that". And virtually showed me the door. I went around the corner to what I thought was an independent jewellers, turned out they had been taken over years ago and were owned by the same company as the first shop. The experience was totally different. They sat me down, apologised for not having what I wanted showed me a few similar watches. Then said leave me your number and we will see what we can find. They called back the next day, said we found one in another store, we are having it couriered to us, we will have it in the morning. 24 years later, I have worn that watch every day.

I had a different experience altogether. At this time last year, I was looking for a Tudor BB58 Blue and found a Tudor AD near me that had one in bracelet. I spoke to a nice gentleman and he reserved the watch for me, went in the next day and paid for it. After 2 months or so, I was itching to get the Tudor GMT Pepsi, and called him again, he was able to source one in a bracelet in about a month or so, keep in mind that Tudors in bracelets had a wait in most ADs last year. After purchasing the GMT, he casually asked me if there was anything else I was interested in or looking to get in the future, I told him that I maybe saving up for a Rolex if I can even get one given the issue with waitlists. He then, quietly tells me to be patient and leave it up to him. About close to 3 months in and I eventually received a call for the Sub Date. All in all, I think it was the relationship I have built with that gentleman that got me the Sub. He knows that I am a repeat customer and not a flipper. I am now on a waitlist for a GMT Master II Pepsi.

In visiting several dedicated Rolex dealers, never have I had a "good" experience. Like you, they try to sell pieces I did not want in order to even look at the model/Reference# I went for. The first time I went, I wanted a 116508 in Yellow Gold and was told I had to purchase Stainless Steel first. Because of this, I will never purchase a Rolex.

Yeah wow! Given her honesty and explanation of the market, I walked into the other boutique and was not expecting to, snap my fingers (which I'd never do anyway) and walk out with what I wanted, but don't expect me to buy stuff I don't want just to be considered. I think your sales rep did try to sell you a watch given he did not want to turn you off. The rep was using a technique called “selling what’s in stock”. The rep knew that the GMT and Sub were not in stock and yet did not turn you away. Here in the states the AD just says they have Exhibition Only watches and you have to beg to try one on. My advice is that if you really want the GMT, go buy it from a trusted grey market dealer or from the Rolex CPO program. Else, just continue to be patient.

In January, I dropped into my nearest AD here in Japan asking about the new 36 mm Explorer (all-steel version). Was treated very coolly by the sales staff. They had no watches to look at or try on. They showed me the watch I wanted in the catalogue but showed no interest in engaging with me as to how I might go about getting the watch. No waiting lists in operation, and I was just told to call back from time to time on the chance they might have some new stock. The sales person refused to give me one of her business cards when I asked: She clearly didn’t want to see me again. I was so annoyed by the way I was treated, the next day I went online and ordered the Explorer from a grey market outlet in Osaka that I’ve used before. There was a substantial markup, of course - about 50% up on the RRP, which did make me wince a bit - but 4 days later the watch was delivered and I’ve worn it every day since. Part of the satisfaction of wearing it is remembering the unhelpful way I was treated by the AD, and knowing I got the watch I wanted regardless.

Cartier a couple of years back bought back a bunch of watches as they couldn't be sold at retail price. My local Omega Boutique closed down as they couldn't sell enough watches. And this is in a very wealthy area of the city I live in, so there are problems but it's Rolex creating this artificial scarcity that creates this problem. You get to the store and there's a police officer and one of the representatives outside of locked door, there's a wait to get in. Then when you get in I was told that for the watch I was looking for, that there is a 2-year wait list ! I said if you don't want my money , I don't have to buy Rolex, you're not worth my time. There are a lot of other luxury brand companies that have their doors open and there is no wait list. To me a company that can't meet the demand is a mismanaged company and I will not support bad business. Imagine the amount of sales that walk away because of that management. I am more than happy to give my cash to a better company that knows how to manage, supply and demand. And I won't play their marketing game. They're not that important. I was at an AD that sold Rolex and Tudor. I bought a black bay and felt it would be a good time to express interest in a Rolex sun. The salesman’s exact words were. Boy you don’t ask for much do you ? I almost wished I could return my Tudor I was so mad

Not great, I would have been the same as you. Asking to buy something, shouldn't make you feel bad.

I totally agree. Can I ask did you actually buy the submariner or the Gmt in the end?

Not yet 🤞🏼

Taking into consideration how things are with PP,AP, RM and Rolex for the past couple of years… Sounds to me like that AD actually tried very hard to get you on the path for the *Hyped* pieces you wanted. There are a lot of real enthusiasts out there, that have been on waiting lists for years or that have bought other watches prior to getting allocated that specific one they wanted. I’m sorry, I just don’t understand why you think you’re any different from any other client? 🤷♂️ Because of a few Breitlings and Pam’s? You want a GMT Pepsi , Batman or a Sub which are Rolex SS sports watches. Super Hyped choice for an enthusiast as literally everyone wants them. You’re on KZbin for a minute, hence you know how hard it can be to obtain (for retail) even the ones you were initially offered. I understand your frustration but tbh what did you expect? Maybe next time ask for a Panda Daytona for a first watch and see how that goes. Or you could pay the premium and buy elsewhere. Not trying to be rude, it’s just that your reaction seems over dramatic. Great channel and content btw. Cheers.

"There are a lot of real enthusiasts out there, that have been on waiting lists for years or that have bought other watches prior to getting allocated that specific one they wanted" SO WHAT???????? They CHOSE to be subjected to those BS practices. And what did Jessica expect?? Well, to get the watch she wanted with no beating around the bush. Period.

@@ROE1337 lol don’t be offended buddy. I’m not the evil AD. That’s how things are these days. And I do think that she was offered more models than other first buyers do. Yeah, no one can get the GMT/Sub/Daytona they want unless with some type of purchase history or the good grace of their AD. Nothing new and been like that since about 2016-2017.

About a year ago I went into the Rolex outlet here in Bangkok. An assistant came up to me and I explained I was not looking to buy hut to see what they had. The sales lady asked me to sit down and got several different models for me to look at. Again I said I was not looking to buy on the day but she insisted no problem. We had a good talk about Rolex and I left. It was an excellent experience. When I buy my next Rolex, I bought one from them for myself and my wife, I will buy from that outlet.

That sounds like an awesome interaction at the boutique. I've also had good experiences like that too, just not at this store. Congrats on the watches.

Hey mate. Six months ago I went shopping at Rolex's AD in Melbourne. Made the appointment online, showed up on time. Was wearing my 25yo Breitling Aerospace. Wanted a GMT Sprite as I'm left handed (and I love green!). Yeah nah, waitlist is over a year long. Can put you on our "interest list" (not the wait list). Showed me a few others, none of which were available for me to buy. The "interest list" is code for "get the f#ck outta the store"....that much I figured out. Have since bought eight Seiko's and five G-Shocks. FU Rolex.

Pretty crazy!! My wife went in the other week and with 12 hours got a call for a two time Date Just. I guess some watches are more available. I’m still on the list for a Sub and Pepsi, 12 months on.

Only display.

@@AussieWristWatch Isn’t that even a worse kick in the ballocks; they don’t even really have it and you can’t get it anyway. When i went into the AD in Denver I tried the “display only” watch on and the gal freaked out when I turned the bezel. I thought she was going to have kittens 😂

If I ever won the lottery I would still not buy a Rolex, just as a point of principle.

@6:36 “I’m new to Rolex, I don’t have a firm view on this” This is what I think you should do, and I’m not ridiculing or criticizing you. Years ago, for an entire year I spent night after night reading every watch book on the market about timepieces, watch manufacturers and so and so forth. Finally I had a very clear idea of a specific timepiece I wanted. Then I went out and bought it. This is how I started out buying watches. In your case, and know your video was posted about two years ago, so a lot may have changed in your life, in your experience with timepieces in general, my advice is to consider if you have one watch that will make you happy more than any other watch, or if you are a watch collector. The best way to achieve either of these goals is to first study a lot about timepieces BEFORE going into an AD. Believe me, a lot of AD’S themselves don’t know much about the very product they are selling. If you do your research and homework you will be armed with knowledge and be better prepared next time around. Good luck 😊

With secondary prices down, it’s ever more tempting to skip buying crap you don’t want and just get your Rolex. I do have a good relationship with my A.D. but that’s rare nowadays. Even so, I bought a used Pepsi and skipped the wait because the price has fallen from its used high.
@AussieWristWatch2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's getting to be a reasonable time to do that I think. It's still going to be more than retail, but you don't have to go through all the palaver.

I had a similar experience in Washington DC. The salesman was trying to talk me out of buying Rolex. Saying Rolex is not very special. Tudor and Omega are just as good….

Rolex has turned into a joke. I have owned 8 Rolex, 6 Rolex tutor and 50 other high-end watches like Breitling, omega etc. I will never give another penny to Rolex.

It's funny to me that any of the submariner watches are considered an "endgame" watch collection piece. I wonder of that AD has ever thought of brands outside Rolex. 😂

The moment he tells me a watch I want, that he can get, is not for me because I haven't bought watches I don't want, that's when I'd tell him I'll be happy to pay the grey market price, and leave. At a dealer in the US, around the time you posted this video, a very nice sales rep let me try on a Batman, and he was willing to take my info for one if I wanted. I wasn't ready to commit to buy if an allocation came in for me, so I didn't take him up on it, not yet at least. We also chatted about various models for a while.
