Ok young lady, you have just proven that you can teach an old dog new tricks! I have planted carrots, made sure that the soil was loose, but NEVER thinned them ! I always complained that I had many carrots but that they were small... thank you for opening my eyes. Keep on keeping on!

As a former farmer, we would space our seeds out so we didn't have to thin much at all. If you are growing lots of carrots, like on a farm, it would be a timewaster to do so much thinning. You are spot on with knowing the varieties of carrots that you can grow in your area. That, the watering, and the loose soil are the keys to growing yummy carrots.

I really don’t like carrots but I’m still watching

Honestly, and this probably sounds cliche, but I didn't either all that much until I started growing my own. The flavor is definitely sweeter (especially in the fall) and more complex.

I love growing carrots; as you said, those little snipped tops add a lovely flavor to salads. Great video!

Great tip on trying different types to see which ones work. I grew mine last year in grow bags and in one of the bags I had a rainbow variety. I have a template that I use when planting in 5 gallon bags and I plant 17 per bag which leaves plenty of room for each one after thinning. The problem I had with the rainbow mix was the white carrots didn't germinate nearly as quickly as the red and orange so I thought they were duds and resowed more seeds. Sure enough all of them (the originals that were slow to germinate and the ones sown later) all came up and I had WAY too many carrots for the grow bag and ended up with a bag full of skinny little carrots. Also, do you mulch your carrots once they've germinated and are growing well?

Very nice

If you start with pelleted carrot seeds, you can space them correctly and pretty much eliminate the need to thin them. You also use fewer seeds, which is good because the pelleted seeds do cost a bit more.

I've used pelleted seeds for lettuce but not for carrots. Thanks for the tip!

Great tips for carrots! I have hit or miss luck with carrots but when they grow for me they are a real treasure! That is the coolest vegetable in the background! Is it a squash of some kind? Can you give some information on that? Thank you so much Jill for all that you do for us.
@thebeginnersgarden2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's tromboncino squash. Check my channel for a recent video on it!

Have you ever tried that trick where you put a flat board over the top of them to get better germination

What is that cool seat in the background at the 9 minute mark?
@thebeginnersgarden2 жыл бұрын
It’s a rolling garden seat. They can be found on Amazon but I think we got this one at ace hardware or tractor supply.
