I bought a 12 pack of grow bags from Amazon for like $30. Way cheaper than regular containers. 😎 I'm currently building raised beds from reclaimed cedar fencing. 😎

for food grade 5 gallon buckets, approach your local restaurants, many buy many of their supplies in 5 to 7 gallon sizes. I get many for free.

I find a mixture of organic peat, a good quality compost, and perlite work vary well for containers. I had a container garden last season and was very successful.

My first raised garden was built using reclaimed barn framing - poplar 2x10 about 100 years old - 2023 will be the 5th year using it and it is still fine.

I harvested my sweet cabbage except the two smallest ones as an experiment. Thank you for introducing us to fall and winter gardening. Planning spring, a smaller summer garden, and next fall/winter in our planner. Merry Christmas and God’s blessings to you and yours always!

Thank you, Tami! It's such a treat to harvest crops like cabbage in December! :)

What is your feeling on plywood with Thompson's water sealer? You can always put plastic against the sides of any planter to prevent leaching and water exposure.

I’ve seen some great videos on starting seeds on a budget. You’re right though, that it doesn’t make sense to go through all the trouble if you’re only planning to plant a few.

Squrries keep digging in my raised bed. I plan on doing some live trapping next spring and hauling away.

Biggest reason why GrowBags are better than hard sided pots: Air Pruning of roots, and Drainage! Air Pruning means, as roots get close to the edge, the root tips die near the oxygen. this forces MORE root growth inside the interior of the pot. Hard sided pots are often ringed with Bound Roots surrounding the outer edge of the pot. And there are a LOT all ion the same area, removing the nutrients or fighting with each other for nutrients.

Treated lumber does not last any longer than standard pine lumber when in direct contact with the ground. I have been using raised beds for 25 years

Do you have any rabbits problems? They sure loved my green beans last season.
@thebeginnersgarden2 жыл бұрын
Yes. A fence is the only thing that works, but even that has to be repaired in one way or another each year. They always seem to find a way.

@@thebeginnersgarden I actually put an electric fence around my chainlink fence. It helps alot. Sometimes they find a way past it. I keep raising my beds thinking someday the beds will be high enough.
