I love that you say you still use them when the are “hairy!!” and sprouting. Society these days dictates that if something doesn’t look pretty & perfect, that it should be thrown away, which causes so much wastage!! I often feel that people (even those close to me) think that I’m disgusting because I use the hairy carrots or the sprouting onions, but they’re still perfectly good to use!! (Obviously, if they’re too far gone, piggy or chooks get them!!) I was so happy to see this!! It assured me that I wasn’t crazy!! Lol!! Thank you!! Xxx

This year, for the first time, I am using pelleted carrots from Johnnys. This has solved the problem of needing to thin the planting. It has worked beautifully. From Missouri 😀 Enjoy your posts!

Thank you for a real video. It can be discouraging when things don't go according to plan, but you didn't hide that. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one!

It’s great having a Gardening channel so close to where I live (Conway, Ark). So many channels show what works for them, the timing of year for things done, or for zones, locations, climates that often don’t match where I live. If things work for you, odds are almost a certainty will work where I live.

I use a planting stick for carrots. It's a 1 x 2 that has a small hole drilled every inch to hold a seed. I just load it up and tip it over to drop the seeds into a row.

That is a great idea. I used the corn starch method this fall which was ok but I still had to thin some areas.

Thank you for showing us how you thin your carrots. It seems like common sense but if you've never done it, thinning carrots can be intimidating.

Thanks for your video! I had a huge crop of carrots this year and pickled all of them to enjoy with salads or as a side. 1 batch was super hot with Mrs. Wages hot pickling mix and the 2nd batch sweet.

I store our carrots for months & months in fridge, green tops removed, make sure all carrots are fully submerged in water in a container with a lid. We use multiple containers. Don't put too many in 1 container, make sure your lid can fit tight! They stay crisp, like they were just pulled from the ground until you use them! Only trick is every month or so CHANGE THE WATER just to ensure freshness so nothing can start growing. I've used Tupperware or Pyrex, both work great.

Did you ever figure out the issue with the carrots? My FIL tried to grow carrots but cut the tops down because they were too bushy in his pot and they all died. Maybe the frost killing the tops did the roots in as well.

The Kuroda carrot is what I grow in 10a because it's more heat tolerant. I wonder if that means it's more cold sensitive?

Felt so bad watching you harvest the second planting. Is there any way you could make some easy lifting plastic covers with a wood frame to give it protection plus a greenhouse effect? I'm fixing to get into carrots because they don't have a lot of vitamin K to thicken my Factor 5 Leiden blood. Just hope I don't turn orange eating them like my kids used to with the baby food. Or, considering I have seen folks tan orange before homecoming with the fake tan lotion. Awful look.

Is it ok to use PT wood if you line with plastic?
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden Жыл бұрын
I use it and don’t line with plastic.
@chriswhinery925
@chriswhinery925 Жыл бұрын
Modern PT wood is fine even if you don't line it. A couple of decades ago they changed the chemical formulation that they use to pressure treat lumber to a mix that's far less toxic to humans. The old stuff had arsenic in it but the new stuff is copper based. Copper can still be toxic to humans in large amounts but you'd need to ingest way more than what can potentially leech out of your wood. Just make sure the wood you're using wasn't made before 2003 and it'll be safe. That said, if you want to play it extra EXTRA safe, go ahead and line with plastic, it won't hurt anything.

Please, scub carrots, don't peel them as peeling removes much ot the nutritional value. Also, the green tops of carrots are edible and apparently makes a good pesto
