nevskislake right? I actually have hitchhiked a couple of times because I didn’t have much of a choice, only short distances though. But my mom told me how she and her brother randomly hitchhiked through Europe back in the 70s, like I’ve been a bit reckless at times but no fucking way I’d do that.

Randi Bagley-Goodwin I’m Swedish and I’ve travelled around Europe by train and bus staying at hostels, and a few road trips by car, but a bus/train is a lot different than getting in a car with random strangers in a foreign country. I don’t know anyone my age (late 20s) who’s done that.

I was confused why the author mentioned that at all. There apparently wasn’t anything to imply he was gay, but she had to specifically say she wasn’t homophobic while she was being sexually assaulted by a man? Just not sure how that fit into the narrative at all.

I used to hitchhike. A lot. One day a friend of mine an I were trying to hitchhike back to my town. A dump truck sized truck pulled over and my friend started to run up to his truck. I stopped her and kept on walking. As we passed him he asked if we needed a ride. I said nope we're just out walking. He tried a few more times to get us in the truck and my friend tried to talk me into getting in because we were running away from a group home. Nope. I would have gone back before I would've gotten into that truck. A semi truck came along and we got a ride all the way home. He went out of his way to bring us home. My instincts have kept me alive many times.

I was 12 in 72 and we were scared, yes I hitch-hiked all over San Francisco, Marin/Sonoma. Never had a big problem, a few creepy things were said but I was never scared. The last time I did it was 78 and this older (40ish, overweight etc.) guy picked me up and asked if he could come over and have a drink with me. My reply was, "i don't think my mommy and daddy would not like that." I had my freaken skate board with me and I still had braces.
