WELOVEKIMIKO and Marilyn Warren You might be unaware of several important facts that absolutely influenced the 1950's recipes and meals....1) Our mother's grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930's when MOST didn't have access to a lot of money and therefore foods. Getting a square meal was difficult and you ate what you could get. 2) Our mother's also had gone through the severe rationing of WWII. Meatless Mondays, Victory Gardens in backyards, etc. meant that food continued to be very limited and simple. 3) The grocery stores of the 1950's stocked significantly FEWER items than stores today do, most stores did NOT have in-store bakeries, deli's, or "gourmet" departments. 1950's recipes used fewer and simpler foods is because that is ALL THAT WAS AVAILABLE and compared to the Depression and WWII, the 1950's were considered at the time to be the days of milk and honey in America. Remember most of Europe had very little food and that American farmers shipped grains and foods all over the world to avert starvation.
@WELOVEKIMIKO6 жыл бұрын
Susan...Sis...nobody cares about any of that. None of what you just spewed changes the fact that mayo could have definitely been left out of this already horrendous recipe. It could've been salvaged without it. Period. Stop trying to defend something that doesn't apply to the life of a millenial. Take this recipe, skip the mayo and it MIGHT just be edible. Your mothers were a little too "creative" for most tastebuds. Bread, Beans, eggs, flour, salt pepper and canned good all existed but SOMEHOW this green slime was the choice?? Doesnt mean you just throw it all together and call it a day. You would make an excuse for anything huh? Lady stop it. End of story. Goodbye.

#🍮 OIL the Pan! For starters. Thinly coat pan (but get those grooves) with olive oil, melted butter, or with the mayo from the recipe. 2. DO NOT WAG the plate & mold pan in AIR, you have to HIT the bottom on the counter. 3. When releasing mold with the knife go down as far as you can on the smooth sides (especially the middle) 4. Hotter water maybe needed. Mix boiling water with hot tap water, if need be. Tips I learned from my Grandmother

Have you ever heard of the 17 layer jello? It's a retro jello receipe. My sister sometimes makes it. I can make jello without fruit just fine, but my Mom is the queen of jelloaroind our family. She makes whatever flavor and the hotwater but when it comes to the cold water she uses yogurt or ice cream or cream cheese to make it a cloudy colir and chills it for a bit then adds a ton of fruit. Our family detours it! The key to adding the fruit I just recently learned is to drain it if its canned, dry fruit makes it good not soggy. She also uses the juice from the can in the begining when you add water, or the other things. I really enjoy your video's! What do you say right before you eat something? You say something but I can't understand? Thanks for all the info!

wide-spread advertising, convenience for the people who did all of the chores at home, and attempting to preserve food! pretty much every single magazine had some coupon for jell-o, mayo, hot dogs, soda, whatever product you can think of, and the page would have a "convenient recipe" that was quick and inexpensive for the cooks of the household to make for their families (to get them to buy the products, of course!), and if fruit/salad/meat was molded into jell-o then it could be stored and eaten again later. what 'me here' said is true as well, lots of the jell-o salads and desserts were made as 'party dishes' to impress guests and stuff. weird times!

My grandmother always made a Jello mold for holidays. Only hers didn't use mayonnaise, it used cottage cheese. At the time I thought it was completely gross, but now I must admit that nostalgia has made me wish she were around to make it again. :)

I remember this from childhood! There was always one of these at picnics and potlucks in the 70s, typically accompanied by other jello 'salad' molds. There were several variations; they were always green with pineapple and mayo. I think my mom had a tupperware mold specifically for these dastardly things.

I think you could have left the mayo out without a problem. There is enough staying power in there with the cream cheese, cool whip and the jello. I love that you do these retro recipes. I grew up eating many a horrifying gelatin salad in my youth. The 60s and 70s were a heyday for them. My favorite is what we called pink goop or sometimes "pink fluff" You can make it any color you want depending on the Jello. It has cottage cheese, strawberry jello powder, drained crushed pineapple and cool whip. Still make it at Christmas!

I have made this a few times. I now do it a bit differently than the traditional recipe suggests. Drain pineapple and cherries, set aside. It's a matter of taste, but I also cut the cherries in half. Smaller chunks of cherry in the bites tastes better. Mix Cool Whip and cream cheese, both at room temperature, with an electric mixer. Set aside. Melt marshmallows in 20 oz. Of *DIET* (yes, diet) 7-Up in a pan. When it's boiling, add the lime Jell-O and mix. Take off heat and stir in pineapple and cherries. Add Jell-O mixture to Cool Whip/cream cheese mixture. Stir with regular spoon until well mixed. Put in SPRAYED mold pan and place in fridge a few hours, preferably overnight. Skip the mayo. It makes absolutely no difference in how well it sets. And I honestly think the salad tastes a bit better without it somehow, even though you can't actually taste the mayo itself. Might as well save yourself the calories.

From past experience watching my Grandmother and mother fight with the old metal molds you need to give it the hot water bath, run the knife around the sides and middle, but you also need to smack them against the counter to help release the air on the sides. Not only does it release the air pressure, but it's satisfying after fighting with it for too long!

This reminds me of something my mother made for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her version was lime jello, cottage cheese, whipped cream, and canned pineapple. She didn't have a mold, she just put it in a huge bowl. She didn't have a name for it, but my father always called it green deal.
