My grandma still makes a version of this for her church salad luncheon, but she calls it "tuna mousse"...and it's a huge hit every year. I helped her make it once, and that was the last time. The smell of the jello and fish...one of the most noxious things I've ever experienced. This is my first time commenting on ANY video, but I felt you needed to know that in rural Wisconsin, the church folk love it, even in 2018.

No, they had their ways to make the Gelatin come out of the molds easily. Like spraying the mold with cooking oil first, dipping it in warm water for so many seconds, cutting at the edge, and then (when the mold was upright on a plate) shaking it horizontally instead of vertically.

Plain Knox gelatin, True Citrus True Lemon powder, a seafood you actually like, lemon or lime juice, finely minced cuke & radish, grated Vidalia onion, and minced capers; organic mayonnaise (or, "Just Mayo") optional. I think I'd need to use a few drops of food coloring. I may try that with flaked leftover salmon.

I am on a high protein, low carb diet. I will use sugar free jello and since I do not like raw onion, I might substitute celery. This will fit into my dietary needs perfectly! Also, you can spray your mold with cooking spray and/or put a hot damp kitchen towel on the inverted mold for just a few seconds. I have also dipped my mold into a bowl of hot water ( just about midway up the mold being careful not to get water IN the food ) for a few seconds. By the way, I have made the crown jewel salad ( my recipe was called “ stained glass window because it was made in a loaf pan and sliced, thus resembling stained glass). It makes a beautiful presentation.

And YOU make it a reality! I am just sorry they are so HARD (like to un-mold in some cases), but retro recipes were WORK, I kept a 1950's household in every way for years decades ago - furniture, appliances, cookware - and "New & Simple" means "Old Fashioned and HARD," but kept housewives busy during long days at home. I cannot imagine them doing all that shaking, while wearing pearls and high heels like in the old TV shows, but. Since no one was watching, well...maybe she had the milkman do it FOR her...Anyway, I love and adore your efforts, and am SO GLAD I cannot smell these as they come out. (ALTHOUGH - I do eat SpaghettiOs and watch often, so that particular treat was pretty danged enchanting!) THANK you!!

It's soooo good on pita bread with tomato. Great for parties too!! Honestly, one of my all time favorites. Thanks for keeping retro recipes alive.

Weird but true lobster trivia: Lobsters and telephones had strong sexual connotations for Salvador Dalí. Wallace Simpson was famously photographed in a dress w a lobster print made by designer Schiaparelli. The dress was a design collaboration with Salvador Dalí that grew out of the lobsters that started appearing in the artist’s work in 1934, including New York Dream-Man Finds Lobster in Place of Phone, which appeared in the magazine American Weekly in 1935, and the mixed-media Lobster Telephone created in 1936.

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, we often had a dish similar to this for a cold supper in the summer when it was too hot to heat up the kitchen. Very few people had central air then and all we had was a single window unit A/C that basically cooled the room it was in. The rest of the house was HOT and Mom frequently made cold suppers that we ate outside on the patio. Anyway, the tuna dish was made with unflavored gelatin, canned tuna, mayo (or Miracle Whip, which is what always passed for mayo in our house), onion, green pepper and maybe some pimiento. I'm sure the preparation must have been somewhat similar, but ours were put into individual jello molds. At supper, each tuna dish would be unmolded onto a dinner plate with iceberg lettuce, surrounded by fresh cut cucumbers, tomato, boiled eggs or deviled eggs, cheese and rolls. It was one of my favorite summer meals! However, can't imagine it made with lemon jello - that's just wrong!

Thanks for your bravery! I really like tuna in just about any form: tuna salad, tuna casserole, tuna melt sandwiches. I love all flavors of Jello except watermelon. (I like watermelon itself, but can’t stand the artificial flavoring, even in candy). I love the addition of fruit to savory dishes. I happen to own a fish-shaped gelatin mood that I’ve only used as a decoration. I’m pretty sure this dish is going to end up on my table in the near future. I love green olives, but not in tuna salad. I’ll probably substitute chopped scallions for the minced onion and just use one slice of stuffed olive for an eye.

Lem Hemsweoth Don’t you think she does these recipes for all of our reactions?! She already knows that some of these concoctions are odd and have ingredients that just shouldn’t go together. But hey, thanks for calling me an idiot :) Stay awesome there Lem.

Hi Emmy! I have a question. Do you ever finish the foods that you’ve created? Do you have leftovers? Haha
@emsfallout4666 жыл бұрын
Bryane she’s said before that she shares it with family and friends when she doesn’t which is very often.

Emmy!! I learned this from cooking with dog, dip the mold in some hot water for some seconds to promote the jello to get out without breaking apart!
