When I have phase cancellation going on, what's the best and fastest way to find out where it's coming from?
@JonasFasching6 ай бұрын
Interesting question... I would probably work with a phase correlation meter on the master and then solo/mute individual tracks. It could also be that the cancellation comes from multiple tracks playing together, so this is a tricky one. Also try to make your master mono and try to hear what is missing might be a good idea. Your question just sparked my interest and I found this free plugin "Correlometer" by Voxengo, its a Multi Band Phase Correlation Meter, so this can help you to find the frequency where the cancellation is happening. If the cancellation comes from multiple tracks playing together, you could try to invert the phase of one track or even just nudge one track by a few miliseconds. This should help as well. Hope this helps a little, otherwise feel free to reach out again. Here's the free Plugin I mentioned: www.voxengo.com/product/correlometer/

Great chanel, just subscribed. How do you make it possible to record a mono track in ableton? When I record it's allway in stereo. Best regards from Sweden

Hey there, thanks for the sub! 🙏 If you go into the preferences you configure the input selection, and there you can toggle on every input also as a mono source. If you record internally, say route channels or resample, Ableton always creates a stereo file (waveform) and doesnt let you create mono files. Thats something that i also thought of as a bit strange, but i guess it makes the process easier and quicker compared to other daw‘s where you can actually create mono files, but also have to adjust the routing etc. Greetings back from Switzerland

@@JonasFasching Thank you for your quick respons. I basicly only use internal sounds. There is som workaround by using utility and record a midi synth for example only go to either left or right. Not an easy way, and I'm not shure that it's as good as usin two mono signals. I really like ableton, bit this feals like a little drawback. Maby there is som software to convert stereo to mono, but do you think that would be just as record in mono? The guitar you recorded sounded really great and wide, so if I find a way to use that method it would make my day :D

@@peterlassis2156 In the end it doesn't actually matter if the source is recorded on a stereo track. Because if you record a mono source on a stereo track, it will still be "mono" because there is no stereo information on it. It will be played on two channels yes (left and right) but it will still only be in the middle. So it technically doesn't matter. And if you want to fold a signal with some stereo width on it into mono, you can do that by using the utility plugin and just hit the mono button.

@@JonasFasching Thank you for your reply . I'm trying to wrap my head around this since I commented for the first time. I have never had a problem understanding the concept of mono and stereo, but playing around in ableton, mixing and mastering it seems to be a litle more to it. I'm only using vst and midi or some samples. You propably know this, but I just learned that when right-click on the pan knob you can choose "select split stereo pan mode". So if I understand ableton correct, the default pan, only changes the volume on either the right or the left chanel, so if paning maximum, for example 50L, only silence the right chanel, it doesent "move" the right chanel sound to the left side, if that make sence. I haven't tried the "select stereo pan mode" yet, but I will. If you have the time I't would be great to have your input or thoughts about the above in the wide sound context. Best regards Peter

When double tracking, it can help to detune one guitar a few cents.
