Here's a good idea for a video, that kinda came from this: "world class" players that went to lesser leagues and got embarrassed. You even mentioned a few of the possible candidates in the video. You could do also a sort of up/down video, where after every humiliation comes a player who left Europe for the big check, then owned that league, decided to go back to Europe and went right back to being a world-class player again.
@TheMightofDab2 жыл бұрын
Zlatan would surely be number 1 for the latter video idea
@BroadwayJoe992 жыл бұрын
@@TheMightofDab Yeah, Zlatan is an easy choice for that. After that, it gets a little fuzzy, at least from my perspective. On the other side, one that comes to mind is Gonzalo Higuain. And the worst part of Higuain's case was that he certainly knew going in that MLS might not be the most talented league in the world, but everyone and their dog has a full-ninety motor. His brother played in MLS for a decade, and probably had been telling him that for years before he came over, and STILL he just loafed around and got run into the ground. The line I kept hearing was that he thinking he could play "with a cigarette in one hand". That might have flown in 1996, but not today.

Don't know if you were around at the time but he is almost the poster child for being bad at one club. I remember seeing him line up for Inter against Villa in the UEFA Cup and being entirely anonymous, then seeing him for Arsenal later on and tearing our defence apart. That whole Bergkamp of the Week became quite a thing even though it is clearly very harsh.

I don't think anyone who saw Roberto Carlos at Inter in the 1990s would say he was terrible. At times he looked quite brilliant. I'd like to add something about Romario, a lot of ex-players turned politicians in Brazil went for it because of money, religion and/or ideologies, power or just flat out the corruption lifestyle that is rampant here. Romario on the other way, went on politics because he does have one child with Down's syndrome, and back than, the usual way of treatment for that and the majority of disabilities was just locking them up on some state-owned asylum. The initial stages of his career as a congressman was focused on improving the lives of ppl with disabilities on Brazil, and looking back now, I think he somehow surpassed the expectations (it's nowhere close to perfection, but at the time was a taboo just to see someone with DS in public with you, they were considered as people by the system and shit, nowadays it's MUCH better). I know, he's overly pragmatic with another stuff, very outspoken and on a uncharacteristic way for an idol turned politician, does not went over the "populist character" train. I'm VERY left leaning, but in my state, the politician class of all the spectrum are so inapt, corrupted or outwardly pathological, that everytime he tries to run, as a congressman or as a governor, I vote for him instead of the names on tge left-wing agenda, just because i know, that are thing i don't like, but none of things i do hate and unfortunately that's how you choose someone to vote on Brazil (And yes, because of all of that he is unscathed by the wild polarization that's happening here, it's like he is against all the sides just the right amount to not be hated for not being on the same agenda as the enemy beside don't being an allied.) Rio was clearly on the decline his last season at United let alone his year at QPR.

Frankly, I don't think this inclusion was good. Last season of a player on complete decline and horrendous personal issues is hardly a good parameter.

Rio Ferdinand was dealing with his wife dying of cancer, when he played at QPR, his drop in form to me is completely understandable.

Imo for the world class definition you can't really say the top 2 or 3 in each position cause that means the definition always changes. If someone scores 40 goals in a season, but scored less than cr7 messi and suarez, then is he world class? And about the Rio example back then (let's say 2008 during the double winning season) then we had Terry vidic rio puyol cannavaro, each one was world class

Hmmmm...there's a difference between great players winding down their careers and not being able to replicate earlier triumphs and those who managed to come good again. Jimmy Greaves wasn't that great at Barnet and was still younger than Romario. In fact there are many more players who declined in the latter stages of their careers at multiple clubs, I don't think Ferdinand should be there, he was past his best and when someone you love is dying of cancer, it eats your soul, making everything else irrelevant and tiny; the fact that he managed to get himself ready to train and play is itself remarkable. Maybe the video could have been players wiith one disastrous spell in the middle/start of their career?? Also, George Best played domestic football in Australia and personally I'd rate him higher than Romario. People don't seem to understand just how great Riquelme was, possibly because we only see him through a European lens
