Fellow Canadian here! I’m 7 years into ownership of my 16’ED Bighorn. Relatively low kms for the year at 122,000kms. 1/3 of these kms have been towing. I’ve had ZERO issues! Only been back to the dealership for recalls. Its been GDE hot tuned after it’s first oil change. I wasn’t interested in more power. I mainly wanted to shut off the EGR to help with engine longevity. I do oil/ filter changes with Rotella T6 every 10,000km and change the fuel filter every other oil change. I also treat every tank of diesel with an additive. I’ve never done an engine oil analysis but will start my next oil change. My intentions were always to keep this truck for the long haul. Ive wanted to do other things such as delete/ oil catch can but have stalled on these ideas because now I’m contemplating selling due to the main bearing issues. The lack of replacement engines available and the price tag of a replacement now goes for around $20,000 is what’s put me in this new mindset. From what I’ve read (I’m no expert) is lugging these trucks is the worst thing for them. When they lug it puts pressure on the crank which In turn puts excessive pressure on the crank bearings and inevitably will lead to bearing failure. Which is ironic because when they lug is when they get the best fuel mileage and that’s why we bought these trucks in the first place. Moral of the story is let them rev. Don’t let them drop below 1500-1600rpm especially in the higher over drive gears. I’d love to see accurate statistics on engine failures. Such as are these failures more prone to trucks with 3.21 or 3.55 gear sets Over trucks with 3.92’s? Trucks that are used for grocery getters over trucks that get worked? Sorry for the long post! Keep up the great content.

Nice Review with real world wear and tear. I also have a 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie with the Ecodiesel. Currently I am over 248,000 miles (approximately 400,000 km), I had one EGR rebuild at about 105,000 mark, I agree about the cruise control button issue every once in a while (I just keep pressing the 4 buttons on the right side of the steering wheel in a clockwise fashion and then it kicks in), after getting constant punctures with the originals tires - I switched to the Michelin Defender LTX - no issues now, I change my engine oil every 10K, I replaced my struts and shocks after 240,000 miles, otherwise very hard to beat getting 27 to 29 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg around town. My goal - 500,000 miles.

Thanks for taking the time to make this review. I have a 2015 ED that I bought new, has 200k miles. Lifted 2" in the front, and leveled off with HD springs in the rear. I keep 800 pounds of tools in the bed and tow often, and with additional loads, the rear was compromised prior to changing the springs. Now it stays level with heavy loads. I love the truck, but have had many issues. Truck has the shake at 70 mph that many report, but can't find a resolve. Had many EPA issues when new, it was at the dealer often. Electrical connector issues have been common (lots of idiot lights on and off) especially after rain or snow (I eventually put dielectric grease in all connections that I could access). Water pump failed recently. EGR cooler leaked coolant, bypassed EGR and did a GDE tune. Rear end shot craps when pulling our camper thru Colorado, it was eventually replaced by the recall but we lost a few days of vacation while it was at the dealer. It has the projector head lights, seems like I replace bulbs more often than I should ... by entering through the front wheel wells and removing the light assemblies completely (for a bulb replacement?). Outstanding battery life, I just replaced the original battery. I love the torque curve and the performance of the ED / 8 speed transmission. The interior and comfort of the truck is better than the Chevy and Fords that I have owned. The 2WD traction is incredible, so much so that I rarely put it in 4WD. Engine / Transmission still operate as new which is also impressive. Just did the brakes today, I get 100k miles per brake job, so the truck is easy on brakes, especially considering that I tow very often (I also use the engine braking option on the GDE tune, and I use the pushbutton shifting to downshift when going down steep hills). My main complaint is the 70 mph shake in the center console. Dealers could not fix it, new wheels/tires/force balancing/driveshaft work/u-joint work/new motor mounts etc.. nothing has dampened the shake. The shake is no worse now, than it was when it started at about 75k miles. I have never had this many issues with a truck, but I have also never loved a truck like I do this one, otherwise it would have been gone many years ago.

Thanks for the 250k review - very much appreciated. Also appreciated the dash cam comment re battery drain; recently installed a dash cam so will now be aware of this. My 2014 ecodiesel (purchased Aug/2014) has 200k and had a GDE hot tune in 2018 at about 130k. Truck runs well, biggest issue has been tone ring which just recently had the warranty extended to eight years/unlimited kms for that part/issue. Also I owe you an apology; in a previous comment I said I used 11 litres when I changed my oil (not 10); I subsequently realized that in fact what I use is 11 US quarts (Amsoil) so 10 litres now makes sense to me. Look forward to your upcoming truck maintenance videos, along with the rest. Good luck with the house reno - most interesting.

I just got this truck (2014 lamarie longhorn) this week with 130k miles. The thing was super clean and diesel with a good deal. The only issue I had right away was the key fobs intermittently not working. I found out that the IC chip inside has too much space behind it and overtime the circuit bends as you push the buttons (pushing harder and harder when it doesn't work makes it worse). Put a piece of paper behind the ic chip on both fobs and now they work perfectly! Everything else on the truck is working good as far as I see. This is texas so no rust. I am gonna delete the ecu/emissions stuff soon to get even more life, power and mpg out of it.

I did the GDE tune on it and while I was disappointed that DEF can't be disabled anymore (legally anyway), the EGR is disabled, truck is wayyy more responsive and I get about 21mpg average with all terrain tires. Comfy asf and I already saved myself about $300 in delivery costs of stuff just by hauling it, barely any mpg loss when hauling (advantage of diesel). I had a 2014 Ram Ecodiesel Lonestar. I was the original owner. 176,000 miles. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it. 2 intake manifolds, 1 DPF, 1 DEF tank, and 3 EGRs. I really wish some days I still had it but it spent almost 8 total months in the shop. I hope Fiat got the 3rd Generation Ecodiesel right in the 2021 and up models. Luckily for me all the work and parts were under the regular warranty or emissions warranty. I did get $18,500 for a trade in 4 months ago and it was gone off the lot in one day. I see it every once in a while on the roads. A young man has it. I was excited to purchase a used 2019 Nissan Titan XD (5.0L Cummins) until I talked to the service manager. They replace the EGRs in them due to failure about once every 8-10 months. He told me he’s done too many to count. I couldn’t do it again. Too many issues with emissions and diesels. I live in an emissions state and unable to delete due to yearly inspections and fines. So i did get a new/used truck. A 2019 Nissan Titan SL 4x4 5.6L gasser. I’ve got about 15 months left on my extended warranty and then I’m getting rid of my 2015 BigHorn 4x4 Eco (with 110k miles on it now). It’s been in the shop 3 times in 20 months for a total of 7 weeks. It’s currently in the shop now getting a new reluctor wheel in the torque converter. While it’s there, getting new ball joints and some other minor things done (not complaining about those issues, just normal wear and tear). My cruise control works when it wants. Key Fob, which was still in near perfect condition, worked when it wanted as well. Got a new one from a guy on Facebook for $100 and it’s exactly the same same as factory and works perfect. Had to take it in twice for recalls and was in the shop the first week I had it for electric shutter thing in the hood. I hate the turbo lag. I won’t let my wife drive it because I don’t want her to get t-boned pulling out on the road. I’ve never come close to getting the crazy mpg numbers everyone else claims. I don’t pull trailers or haul loads much and drive usually 5 over the speed limit and I get 17 in the city and 19 on the highway. I love the style and the look. It’s powerful. I just don’t trust it not to send me to the poor house when the extended warranty ends next year.

Watch out for the exhaust gasket between the DPF flex and SCR leaking. On my 2016 one of the 3 factory studs that holds the flange together had backed off enough to allow hot exhaust to shoot out directly onto the wiring loom routed above that area. Drilled out the studs and put in 1 1/2" x 5/16 stainless nuts, bolts and a $37 gasket. Caught it early enough so nothing else came of it, but cautionary tale about more DEF system issues. If you do a GDE (green diesel engineering) tune throttle response improves immensely, fuel economy goes up, and EGR gets bypassed. Unfortunately, price went up dramatically once they developed an EPA approved tune. Prior to that you could get your ECM tuned and never add DEF. Big thing is make sure you use whatever oil Stelantis recommends for your truck. For my '17 it is Shell Rotella T6 15w-40. Just had Blackstone run my oil sample and at 100k on the truck and 10k on the oil the results came back saying the engine and oil were in great shape. Staying with the 10k oil changes. @@wraykizlyk3164
@tomfox17514 ай бұрын
U.S. owner--2017 ecodiesel, 119k miles, oil changes at 10k miles. Blackstone showed oil to be great at 100k after 10k miles. GDE tune at 750 miles which eliminated turbo lag and the silliness of regurgitating exhaust into your intake. Still at 27-30 mpg. Tows fantastic. Only problem is that when turning the steering wheel it will sometimes change info screen or radio channel (I'm told there is some electrical "ring" that loses contact or makes contact causing the electrical gremlins). I did have the EGR cooler recall done only because of warranty. Have not changed front rotors or brakes, changed rears because the emergency brake pads fell apart at about 100k miles. I love this truck! Other than the emergency brake pad replacement I have never had the truck in the shop (change oil myself with Rotella T6, 5w-40). I changed the transmission filter and tray at 90k miles just for piece of mind even though the mfg. says it is a lifetime filter. New tray will allow me to change the filter without changing the entire tray. My truck does like tires at 35k miles which seems to be out of character to most owner's experience.

Own a 2015 Ecodiesel Big Horn edition. Currently 110,000 miles since new. The following issues with this vehicle as follows. Replaced two turbos, the radio navigation system was replaced three times, the ignition and starter, DEF system, water pump. Recall EGR Cooler. Currently having issues with the ABS Electronic trailer light intermittently coming on dealer never replaced speed sensor or front wheel hubs. The rear panel developed rust wasn’t covered under Ram warranty. It’s been in the dealership for long periods of time. At least I was provided a loaner car. I received $3,075 under the class action lawsuit. The AEM update definitely screwed with performance. The truck was given an additional 48k warranty with the AEM update.

@@Gene4666 It was the EPA approved emission update. It actually reduced the performance of the Ecodiesel MPG and created a lag when trying to accelerate from a stop. A second AEM was created to address those issues. The lag a poor fuel economy are still present with the updated AEM. Best to not get the AEM. The problem is most people are having complete engine failures at some point under 200,000 miles. The Diesel engine is not reliable as everyone had hoped for. Outside the US people are have the EGR deleted to help with performance. The Ecodiesel before the AEM was a solid 28 MPG. Now it’s about 24 MPG on the highway because of the EPA approved AEM.

i closed the EGR on my old Maxima. Then i read about it and there is a whole laundry list of reasons for having that, including long term durability of the engine. It sounds counter intuitive, but injecting half burned hot air in the engine actually decreases the maximum burning temps inside the engine, which is particularly important in towing. Today I think the intake buildup is the smaller devil and if everything else is good in the engine it is not that big a deal to remove and clean the intake. I have a 2022 Ecodiesel with 17 000 miles and plan on chaning the oil on 3 000 miles and drive it stock as long as it can. No tunes no nothing on this one.

I'm in the US, last September I found a 2019 RAM 1500 classic EcoDiesel with only 17k miles on it. As I researched further I found that it was originally sold in Canada. So even though the pickup should still have Factory warranty, Chrysler won't stand behind it. They voided the rest of the remaining warranty. How ridiculous is that? So, I went through a very reputable and highly rated aftermarket company and now the truck is covered for up to 6 years or 142k miles. Haven't had any issues so far.

Best thing you can do is use Shell Rotella T6 15w40 as recommended by Stelantis. Ten-k oil changes are fine ad I had my oil tested (100k on truck, 10k on oil) and Blackstone sent back excellent results. GDE tune has gotten very expensive but throttle response is greatly improved, power is better, and mpg's goes up a little. Drive it, don't baby it and, if you can, avoid short trips, especially in cold weather.

Error code P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance. Problem is actually the Reluctor Ring or Tone Ring which is buried between the flywheel on the crankshaft $30 part that requires removal of axels, transmission, starter, and many misc parts to access. Reluctor ring has thin plastic magnet around the perimeter that the crankshaft Position Sensor reads. When it fails, and many do, chunks of the magnetic strip break off and the engine will not start. Very expensive repair due to extensive labor required to access. I have a 2016 Ram Ecodiesel Laramie 4x4. Despite all the drama, it has been relatively trouble free over these years with the exception of the EGR recall which i had done and recently a 3 way valve which was causing coolant loss.. I only have 67,000 miles on because i've always had a car for most around town stuff since i live in an urban area. Compared to the Canada warranty problem, i almost have the reverse issue where I bought the max warranty for 8 years or 120,000 miles. I have 1 year left on that and so i've never done the EGR delete. I also have been changing oil only every 10K miles because my dealership never recommended sooner. When this truck came out and after driving a VW tdi around, people said there was no need to change oil sooner. Now it's a different mentality. So, i don't have another car right now due to costs and the pandemic so i'm going to put as many miles on this in the next year and hope that if anything is going to go wrong it happens sooner than later, but apparently the emissions warranty goes 2 more years? I don't know if an Oil Catch Can would void the warranty but that's kind of why I feel a little stuck. I can't customize anything and so am I creating more problems because of having the warranty than someone who doesn't have that?

The secret to having a good turbocharged engine experience. Is cooling down the turbo before shutdown. I do add Hot Shots Secret stiction eliminator. And use the Hot Shot Secret fuel additives. My truck is a 2016 Ram Quadcab 4wd 3.92 ratio with the Ecodiesel. Has 163k miles. Totally California emissions compliant. It did add the Bank's silencer delete, but run a Wix air filter. The exhaust has a Flowmaster 50 series HD muffler. New upper and lower control arms. Bilstein 5100 shocks with a rear spacers for a 2" lift all around. My wife has a 2018 Ram Crewcab 4wd 3.42 ratio Cummins beast. And that truck is more expensive to maintain. It tows and hauls twice as much. I almost bought a 2020 gen3. How’s the fuel economy with the lift?
@jameseroh65442 жыл бұрын
@Animated Depression I did the lift after other changes. Ever since I added the Ranch Hand Legend bumper. The nose has been an inch lower. So the 2" lift in the front with the Bilstein 51000 shocks. Left the front 1" higher than stock. On the back, there is a Snug Top camper with gear for outdoors recreation inside. I changed to a heavier taller spring from ICON, and longer shocks. So the actual ride height change from the springs was only 1". The truck has the 3.92 ratio differtial. So the increase in tire diameter to 33" was not a problem. So the total increase in ride height was 2" at the fenderwell. Driving the same speeds, measured by GPS, got the same range. The Ecodiesel is a good engine. Be nice to the turbo. And clean the intake manifold every year or so. I use Hot Shots Secret diesel fuel treatments. My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. I put a 4wheel popup camper on it. Without the EDT fuel additive, we get 13mpg. With the fuel additive we get 20mpg.

Thanks for the review. Heard it said “there are hero’s and ZERO’S” when it comes to the motor reliability. Maybe that’s the owners oil change frequency though!. On the EGR, remember, the control valve is on the outgoing side of the EGR cooler, so even with flow disabled, the EGR cooler does still see the hot exhaust gas and if it leaks, bad deal. Do the recall for sure.

Hi, my friend I gonna buy a truck but I need your advice on which one is better Ford F150 2.7 EcoBoost or RAM 3.0 ecodiesel (2015 both)? Which is more reliable?
@SomethingonSodom2 жыл бұрын
I don't know ow much about the ford's. How many Miles on the ecodiesel
@alexk1632 жыл бұрын
let's say 90 000 miles for both. Which is more reliable after this mileage?

its hit or miss with these. Lots of stock engines go into the 250+ range. Id make sure the service history is good.

Why did u not tow with it
@SomethingonSodom11 ай бұрын
I did tow with it, I have a 7 ton dump trailer. Not super often but it tows 10,000 lbs fine. I have a 2023 6.6L Duramax now as well so I tow with that mostly. @@DennisGodinho

Here's some statistics 5 out of 6 Ecodiesel owners I know have had catastrophic lower end engine failures. 1 of them twice... Mind you their service and maintenance diligence is questionable but currently one friend just blew his up with approx 50,000km on it and maintained by myself using Mopar filters and Rotella T6 from new. He hauls an enclosed triple capacity snowmobile trailer about 200kms round trip three times a month and nothing in the summer and never matted in tow or lugged it knowing those are Ecodiesel death sentences. We're rather surprised to say the least and there's quite a wait for crate engines with a substantial backorder on them.
@SomethingonSodom2 жыл бұрын
That's serious. Like I said I can only go off my families exp. I'm just around 280k now wife loves it. Stinks a bit though .
@gmctech2 жыл бұрын
Seems to be a roll of the dice... The one guy i know that hasn't blown an engine hauls a wash trailer, plows snow and has even put it in truck pulls and not so much as a check engine light and is easily pushing well over 300,000km. But he does have it serviced religiously. As much as i do believe the crankshafts are made of glass, I'm also firm in my belief that diligent maintenance with factory filters and Rotella T6 will certainly prolong the life of these ecodiesels and any other engine for that matter..

My '17 truck is fully deleted since 500km GDE tuned, EGR thrown away, Frantz bypass oil filter added. My oil is as clean as new even before oil change at 16000 km. 72K kms, no problems at all. The sooner you delete them the longer they last. Also my engine breather is routed to oil catch can, then outside. My intake and intercooler are clean and dry.
@SomethingonSodom3 жыл бұрын
Solid. These bypass filters sound like a good idea
@justlife21293 жыл бұрын
@@SomethingonSodom These engines are solid engines, but without all extra emission equipment. As soon as you start dumping raw fuel to burn DPF off, mix preDPF exhaust into intake the game is over for these engines.... Bypass oil filters remove most of the soot from the oil, and this is what these engines need.

I think buddy fried his electrical, all the problems he listed after the def sound like things related to the power draw from his dash cam in the winter, tbh it doesn’t make sense

The service electronic control throttle and a dead battery ? I'm only on my second battery after about 8 years now. The service electronic control throttle is quite common. My wife doesn't even plug the dash cam in anymore. I had it running fir a 2 hour trip a few weeks ago everything seems alright ?
